I want to reformat my SD card to make a bigger ext3 partition for more app storage using slidemeroot ROM. I want to copy the current apps on the a2sd partition to my desktop so after i reformat the ext3 partition I can just paste them back onto it. So which directory on the SD card can I find my apps? Thanks!
Typically they are on /system/sd
but, with my later rom they are on /sd-ext
Thanks Eugene, also, I can only browse the ext3 directory that my apps are on using Linux like Ubuntu correct? Would my method previously posted work with copying and pasting the apps back onto the new ext3 partition?

Hi!
I'm using DeFrost 1.8 and I think that my confusion will be same on any other FroYo ROM.
I know that DeFrost has Apps2SD buildin and cause it's a FroYo ROM, already have the FroYo-style Apps2SD.
I must confess that i don't care where my apps are installed. I just supose that are stored on SD card using old-Apps2SD method.
Now, I've installed App2SD from Market and show some apps that are on internal memory and some on SD card, but there are lot more apps that I have installed on my phone that don't show up on this app.
Now, I'm very confused with this.
When I install a new app from Market, in what location is installed ? Internal, SD card using App2SD-old or App2SD-FroYo ?
How can I select the default location for new installations ?
I have SpareParts from LeoFroyo and App2sd location is on 'Default'. This means internal memory or old-style App2SD or what ?
If my ROM has buildin old-style App2SD, I can suppose that 'default' means this method. Or not ?
Is your SD card setup for old-A2SD with an EXT3 partition? If not, then they'll either go on the internal memory or the SD card using FroYo-A2SD (although not all apps are installed to the SD card as the creator may not have updated them yet)
Another question:
I actually haven't any Ext3 partition and may applications already installed, some on internal memory and some with the froyo-a2sd on the sd card.
I would like to create an Ext3 partition. I was thinking about the following steps:
- backup the fat32 content of the sd
- create a 1Gb ext3 partition
- restore the content of the Fat32 partition to SD
The problem is:
I will probably lose all the applications installed on the internal memory
Is it right? How can I solve this? Do I have to move everything to the new partition?
Which directories do I have to copy on Ext3?
Is sufficient to backup everything with Titanium and the restore once the Ext3 has been created?
Another problem is:
I started the system with an Ext3 partition and I couldn't access any application I installed before. Is there a way to recover those applications?
Once I erased the Ext3 partition (without installing anything on it) the phone started a boot loop.
What if I create the Ext3 before installing the new rom?
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Daemon

Yes, my SD card have an ext3 partition. So, the apps that don't appear at the App2SD applicaction, it's supposed that are on the ext3 partition ?
Then, why I have some apps in internal memory and other on FroYo-app2sd and the rest on ext3 part ?
I can't understand this.
right so i have now formated my sdcard with an ext4 partition and a fat32 and it works quite well but i cant seem to mount the sdcard in windows so i can transfer files over to the fat32 partition, it works tho in linux on my laptop so what am i doing wrong :| ?
Did u format it by yourself ? I used ROM manager to create ext3 partitions and no problem with windows, it just doesn't see ext partitions which is normal.
Is your FAT32 partition the first partition on your SD card, or did you create the EXT partition first?
Regards,
Dave
fat is first but it seems after a phone reboot it works in windows again :S
Hello Guys
Just received a new sd card for my desire but after searching the net how to copy all the content from my old sd card I couldnt find anything Im looking for which is why im making this topic.
Anyway I have an 8gb card with 1gb ext3, swap0, and willing to upgrade to 16gb ext4, do I just make the nand backup + ext and then restore it? or it wont restore because of the ext3 and ext4 ?
Regards
C.
ps. dalvik is also moved to sd card
ps2. ive accessed the OLD ext partition on my windows pc using the ext2read program and found 3 folders there, app, app=private and dalvik, so do I just copy those onto the new sd + all the files from fat32 partition onto the new one and will that work?
Hi,
Yes,
Imo could Linux do these tasks better but your option will do it also.
First make a nand backup and than cope the fat stuff to the new card and after that put the ext folders in your new ext partition.
Should work, be sure the kernel of your rom supports ext4
Kind regards

LINK THERE TO A REALLY GOOD EXT4 ALIGNMENT ZIP
Just create your partition as normal then flash the zip from recovery

Htc Desire
I think its tough task for me
No its not. Simple. Backup nandroid + ext, put new card in, format to fat32 + ext, nandroid restore. Copy old card fat32 contents to new fat32. Done.

When upgrading sdcard I used PC software to backup whole partitons and then restore them to new sdcard. That was very succesful. I hope this will help)
Hi XDA!
Recently, my SD card reached its limit and I now only have around 100 mb of space, no matter what I do.
Using the MIUI file manager, I can see that under the tab 'other' (i think that is what its called, danish locale), it shows 1.7 gb used storage. Searching through the objects in the category, I only see small 20-900 kb files and some 100 mb, which apparently is my backup files.
Seeing it keeps rising, I thought about formatting and start over.
Is there any folders or files (beside my photos etc.) That I need to backup prior to formatting?
Also, could I just format it using Windows, if mounted as external harddrive?
Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure there is no need for a full format, why don't you just delete the folders with those unnecessary backups and locale files?
Folders that I think need to be backuped if you decide to format afterall are those with a dot in the start of their name (altough I'm quite sure that even those are not important) and probably those that contain files that your programs use for backuping things (like notes, smsbackups, dropbox or whatever). I wouldn't format it though with windows, try sd formatter (google it) or format it with gparted just to be sure it won't corrupt your ext partition(s) if you have them...

Link2SD Problem... HELP!!!
Hello I have a HTC Desire Bravo(GSM) running CyanogenMod9 4.0.4 ICS. I have a 16GB MicroSD memory card and need to partition it to allow Link2SD to move apps and free the *tiny* storage my phone has.
I have got gParted LiveCD and I created a 1.5GB partition for Link2SD and formatted it to EXT3 (as instructed by CM9) but then when I come to open Link2SD on my phone to set it up, it asks me for the filetype so I select "EXT3" and it says the following:
Mount Script Error
------------------
Mount script cannot be created.
mount: mounting /dev/block/vold/179:2
on /data/sdext2 failed: Invalid argument
ext3 may not be supported on your device. Try FAT32
on the second partition.
Now before this I had CyanogenMod 7 build 2.3.7 and it worked fine but up until I upgraded to CM9 ICS it decides not to work. I formatted and reformatted my card to try all other options but it didn't work. Would I HAVE to use FAT32 on my second partition or is there something I am doing wrong??
Thanks
does anyone know for sure where apps are stored when we move it to sdcard?
sd-ext partition..
if u need to have a look, get root explorer> /data/sdext2(similar)
just go to app 2 sd then go to sd card, if you want to move most of your app to sd card then you should download move2sd enabler(for root only). here is the link
app 2 sd pro: http: //www.4shared.com/file/LWfqfkKv/App_2_SD_Pro__233_.html
move2sd enabler: http://www.4shared.com/file/DnI91mzh/Move2SD_Enabler.html
(dont download it to market because it will say not compatible to your sgy)
and what is the forder .android_secure on sdcard.i am very comfused and try to understant some thing.i have partition ext3 on my sd.folder data/sdext2 say its empty.link2sd says that on ext partition is only 10mb.i cant understant...where are stored the apps if they aren't in ext parttion?

.android_secure contains files and references to all the apps on SDcard (I guess )
contents of data/sdext2 are hidden.. use root explorer if you can..
i used root explorer.i cant see the contains of data/ext2 but it say that there is used 10mb from 400+ that is whole space.but where are the others apps.all my apps are more than 180mb and i have moved them to sd.internal memory usage is 50-60mb.where are the others?maybe in sd card but not at ext partition?
