Looks like Google released a new version of GMM. No longer do I get those pesky wininetread errors.
The new version is 1.2.0.2
I'm running Shadow as well.
Here's the link I used from pocket ie: http://www.google.com/gmm
The file is called: googlemaps_compressed
PM
Do you have a linky at all?
Matt
Link to new Google Maps
http://www.google.com/gmm/GoogleMaps.CAB
...or just go to google.com on your phone and you should get a link to if from there on the home page...
Smiffy.

Guy, that's lazy.
And then noobs complain when other members are blunt.
Google is google, and the biggest search engine in the world. Google Maps Mobile is one of their most famous --and only PPC apps-- how could you or anyone else not find the App? Type Google Maps Mobile on your phone or PC?
Sorry, to put this in the spotlight but this is an obvious example why members get upset at new users and don't worry it is not just about you. Currently there are been an ongoing issue about Noobs.
Plays nice in WM6
This new version seems to work better in WM6 ... I can now drag my screen to move the map without the annoying data/refresh errors I used to get in the last version.
Good catch.
The initial version of the program was pretty unuseable due to the error messages.
Hope this version is better!

Street view is so rediculously stupid. In fact I was talking to a director at Google a couple of weeks ago and told him to stop focusing on that poc street view and fix gmm. GMM, after their search engine and maps is probably the most useful thing they have going.
I then proceeded to show him how gmm was incapable of finding the party we were trying to go to because of all the errors. We eventually got there. This new gmm came so quick after that incident... hmm I wonder...
Seriously though, street view??? Can you think of a singe legitimate use for it beyond the cool hey there's where I used to live in manhattan?

But no new features
Yes, the new GMM is nice, in that the wininet error is gone. I haven't played with it too much yet, but the one thing I DID notice is that there is still no hybrid view, with streets superimposed over a sat view.
Again, haven't played with it too much yet, but I haven't seen anything new, outside of the error fix. Has anyone noticed any new functionality?
-pvs
[EDIT] Well, I clicked around with it a bit, and while I AM happy they fixed the glitch, I'm saddened that they couldn't add a few new features, for instance:
1) Hybrid view, as mentioned above
2) The ability to move it's cache to a storage card
3) The ability to preserve my historical locations, searches and directions between upgrades
But again, I'm happy they fixed the wininet glitch. And I guess ... what do I want for free, right?

Ok, heres just one easy one to explain..say youre disabled, and you arent able to get around much for certain reasons etc..would give you a chance to kinda go exploring, and see things, which you otherwise wouldnt be able to....Im sure I can come up with a few more, thats just the easiest/quickest to explain.
btw, Sorry to wander offtopic.

I'm just excited to try the new GMM.
How about a legitimate use for an average person. Everyone needs GMM, very few need street views. Street view is the kind of thing that seems cool and you can talk about at cocktail parties, but you will never use. I use mapping software nearly everyday. And if they get traffic working, could increase productivity in this country by millions if not billions of dollars.

yes. i love it. i live in nyc. now when i go somewhere that is unfamiliar i check it out on street view first so i know exactly what im looking for when i get there. i love it.
I will agree that the street view is not that important. It's more like a 'wow, this is cool' kind of feature.
All in all, this new release appears to be very stable. No annoying errors.
I think this is the future of GPS programs. It is much easier to distribute new maps when available, and add new features.
I envision a program similar to this which simply caches the maps you use most often on the device, and updates them via your data plan whenever an update is needed. If you go to a new city or state, the device starts caching the new area.
GPS works better. yey! You can now configure the GPS, so there's actually a chance of it working
new option in GMM
DTX is corrrect, there is now an option to specify which serial port your GPS is on unlike the previous version. I didnt find this useful because I always set my GPS up under Start-Settings-GPS but you do have an option now to over ride this setting.
I drove around all day yesterday trying out the new GMM to see if the WINNET error would reveal its ugly head and it didnt. I was even out in BFE yesterday and when I would loose cell coverage and then come back in the GMM went to work to catch me back up.
My only wish list thing would be to orient the map depending on which direction you are heading. This was a feature in Pocket Streets that I found very handy instead of playing a guessing game as to which direction to turn...
Enjoy!
Hey all,
Since that junk iGarbage has that Awesome "Cydia" App to download and use ANY Program in the App Store for free and to use Apps that Steve Jobs didn`t like , why can`t Android -AWESOME- DEVELOPERS make such an App ?? or didn`t anyone think about it! (in this case here is the idea so start working ) lol
Best Wishes.
While it is good to support developers who put time into making stuff - there's already such things like black markets... some available in the actual android store too.

althought apps like apktor can be used to download off illegal repo's, im pretty sure there made for freeware ones lol
OP, what you are suggesting is illegal, and not likely to work, since Google would just disable it. Either way, thread closed as this is turning into a warez discussion.
Since Google decided to get rid of the ad-blocking apps on the Play Store, I figured it would be a good time to take a minute and post these links for a few of the more popular ones.
Of course I take no credit for anything. I only posted these links here for a quick reference when the inevitable "where did the ad-block apps go?" threads pop up. All thanks should be directed to the devs who worked hard on these apps.
You can see I do not have a donation link, and never will, because I do not want your money. If you consistently use an app, you should be willing to donate to that dev, or purchase the premium versions of apps you use.
AdFree Official - Currently their site links to Google Play, but surely they'll fix it soon.
APK DOWNLOAD
AdBlock Plus Official - Includes a direct download link.
APK DIRECT DOWNLOAD
AdAway ?Official? (code.google) - link to download F-Droid and install AdAway through F-droid.
APK DIRECT DOWNLOAD
If anyone has one you want me to add, or a better link to include, just comment and I will make the desired changes. Thanks.

I am sorry that you feel this way. But the fact is that we all have a choice, always. Every man has the ability to choose but no ability to escape the necessity of choice. One of the greatest assets of Android is the ability to choose, let's not start limiting those choices on this great open platform.
You are correct that I am a senior member and I do have plenty of experience with XDA. That is why I know this is a valid topic, and the mods should not (historically speaking) have a problem with this thread. Like already pointed out, XDA played a large roll in most of these apps. However, if any mod asks that I remove this, I will. And if any dev wishes his app removed, it will be done asap.
Don't be sorry for how I feel, kid.
Using ad blockers may be good for whoever uses it, but remember you are installing an app to circumvent the value exchange of someone else's labor, going out of your way to make sure they don't get anything in return. That's stealing.
From the dictionary: steal, take (another person's property) without permission or legal right, especially secretly or by force, and without intending to return it

There are spam ads on the net, potentially malicious ad links, and those bs ultra-malicious privacy invading airpush ads, etc..
Me personally I always buy an app that I use that has a donate or premium version. And as far as the "kid" comment, I was only trying to be polite and respect your opinion, I think it is you sir that is acting like a child.
Let this be the last of this conversation, from anybody, or I will have to contact a mod about it. And like ways anybody that has a problem with this thread please contact a mod about it.
Re: Ad-blocking apps
Wow, didn't know they removed them. Makes sense though.
On the topic of ad blocking apps, what do you guys recommend?
I download torrents on my phone and whenever I tap the search box, 2 tabs of ads open up. I'm using the one built into rom toolbox pro.
Sorry for sort of stealing the thread, it was just relevant to what I want to know and seems too small of a topic to open a thread for.

Afaik there is no benefit from installing multiple adblockers, just pick the one you like the most and stick with it. The exception being AirPush ads, although some traditional blockers may block those now too..

I haven't had a problem with anything anybody has said yet; I see both sides of the story, this thread is not about that and I don't want to see it closed over petty bickering about the ethics of blocking ads. Has nothing to do with a pissing contest.
Hey
If I don't want to see ads, nobody can force me to do so.
For developers, everyone have their PayPal account and
there shouldn't be any problem donating to them by your own
money. It's better and more efficient option than watching those awful
ads everywhere and tapping on them.
I would rather send them money if they work are improving my enjoyment
of using my cellular phones. And you know people do appriciate their work.
This is my opinion.
Do not install airblocker
So I just went to find AirBlocker, the simple/clean app I use to set up and forget after ever flash.. I was surprised to see it hadn't been removed from the play store, installed, and imediately notice the malicious/malware apps it placed on my homescreen. (See attatched.) Do not install AirBlocker. I am disappoint, so heads up.
Anyone have a good AirPush blocker alternative? Although its not really needed as you shouldn't have an app installed that has AirPush built in.

I updated the OP to include an apk download for AdFree (my preferred ad-blocker). I just pulled it from my phone and uploaded it to Google Drive. It is the latest version that was available from the Play Store before Google pulled it. Hopefully bigtincan fixes their official site to host the APKs themselves instead of linking to the missing Play Store link.
@WiredPirate - Thanks for starting this thread! :good:I had no idea this was happening, and I completely agree with your stance on adblocking and avoiding privacy invasion. I was about to report mateusm's priggish, provoking rants, but it looks like he got the picture..
Too bad about airblocker.. I've personally used AirPush Detector in the past, and it's open source. [dropbox link to BU'd apk] [google play link.. for now] I'm pretty critical these days about invasive ads, analytics (collects data on your personal phone usage, i.e. google analytics - watch out for this people), and especially the actual data collection via network. I've found that using a good firewall with a good ad blocker along with some advanced common sense keeps security tight regarding these concerns the majority of the time. I use Android Firewall, Adaway or Adfree, Android Tuner - to modify events triggering ads or invasive data collection, and 'advanced' or learned common sense with security and privacy protection. I think a firewall for android is increasingly necessary for android.
*Something very very important --not really related to ads but to network security and privacy protection-- to always consider is network encryption. This mostly pertains to wifi use, particularly in public or any network accessed by multiple users as a hotspot. If you're not using an encrypted network relay via proxy server when using wifi, you're taking a big risk having personal data, passwords, credit cards, fill-out form info, SSN, ***and any collected data from ads and analytics crap!!*** When accessing wifi networks over time with unencrypted personal data, expect that someone will eventually collect this data probably without even targeting you and it could be used against you. I'm just saying we all got to be careful with our multi-networking gps computer phones. I don't believe my phone should have one single ad, just like with my computer.

As long as you do your research on the apk you're about to install and/or know it comes from a reputable place, you should be okay.
Just don't install any sketchy apks you aren't sure of/where they came from lol

All apps that are not in the playstore are not closed source just like all apps in the playstore arent open sourced. Few examples of this are Adaway and Magisk Manager.
Your smart phone is a computer, trust yourself with the open internet and apps the same way you would trust your computer.

Some of those apps will certainly show as adware depending on what you use but so will a lot of other apps in the playstore.
The only reason these apps arent in the playstore is because of the fact that they are used to stream copyrighted material. Thats not to say they couldnt be shady but it doesnt inherently mean they aren't shady.
Are you familiar with reddit because there are a few subreddits with guys that edit these apps to take out permissions they dont need to have and wipe out ads.
https://www.reddit.com/r/showbox/
https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieHDLite/
https://www.reddit.com/r/TerrariumTV/
Chances are those this will get removed and this thread locked given the nature of the apps you are asking questions about.
Thanks. To be honest I don't even watch all those movie etc. All I am looking for are some foreign TV shows that are free in the first place but region locked, and maybe perhaps few documentary series
There are 3 bookmarks baked into the Samsung browser that can not be removed. I can live with the one for Google, but the one for Mobile Web and Accessories are annoying the hell out of me, especially the mobile web one as it doesn't even take you to a functioning web site.
Used to be that disabling the partner bookmarks entry in the apps section took care of them, but that is no longer the case. To make it even worse, you can't even reorder them, so they are always at the top of your bookmarks.
Anyone come across a way to get rid of them?

He actually wasn't telling you which browser you HAD to use, he simply stated his opinion which he's allowed to do! If no one gave their opinions about apps we would never know which apps are better than another.. Calling someone names like you did (kid) and telling them to keep their mouth shut is lowering yourself and making you look bad! But just so you know @HipKat is one of the smarter people on here.. There's a reason his names a different color.. Lighten up some .
Also, if you want the bookmarks gone first try long pressing on them to see if they'll pop up a delete function and if it doesn't then there's only 2 options left and 1 of those you can't do because there's no root access on bootloader version 5 and the second thing you could do is get an app called package disabler pro it costs money but it's worth it to get all the bloatware out of the way or you can look into BK disabler too..
Edit: You can also download the older version of the Samsung internet app in .apk format and uninstall the current version and then install the older version.
