[Q] Android "Cydia" - Desire General

Hey all,
Since that junk iGarbage has that Awesome "Cydia" App to download and use ANY Program in the App Store for free and to use Apps that Steve Jobs didn`t like , why can`t Android -AWESOME- DEVELOPERS make such an App ?? or didn`t anyone think about it! (in this case here is the idea so start working ) lol
Best Wishes.

While it is good to support developers who put time into making stuff - there's already such things like black markets... some available in the actual android store too.

althought apps like apktor can be used to download off illegal repo's, im pretty sure there made for freeware ones lol

OP, what you are suggesting is illegal, and not likely to work, since Google would just disable it. Either way, thread closed as this is turning into a warez discussion.

A) Your question really doesn't make sense.
B) This is the HTC Hero forums, not the HTC Sapphire (Magic) forums.

well first of all, you posted in the hero section.
about your questions, hacking is too much of a big word. better say rooting.
depends on the applications you want to install. majority of them you wont need to root your phone for them to run. there is an option to enable 3rd party applications in the menu itself. however, some applications do require rooting of the phone, for example wifi teetering, bluetooth sharing...
oh sorry i made mistake :\ but i think it would be the same.
i'll try formulate. I wish to download a pack of apps from the internet. I do not know if they are signed or not (not even know if android has that protection as windows mobile has ) . My question was if i can install those apps on the android oficial OS from HTC.
I Hope it was better formulated the question. Thanks again!
For example. i'm downloading this collection of apps: h**p://isohunt.com/torrent_details/148986681/android?tab=summary
Will i need to root or it isnt necessary? What kind of apps need rooting? Or this kind i do not have to worry about.
Thanks =)

from the list you quoted, you dont have to root your phone for the vast majority of them. rooting is required to access proteccted files of the system from your phone
alright excelent. Thank you for your kind help =) I was becoming interested on the iphone but after i saw android, kind of blocked my eyes. the system is great hehe. Thank you again =)
But downloading pirated apps is a good way to get your phone blacklisted & banned from the Android Market.

[APP]XDA Windows mobile app

XDA Windows mobile app
Well, the title kinda explans a lot and I really wanted to read XDA without going the the site every time and I was envius that Android people had a version so I am in the process of making on for our Winmo devices so thats about it. I wa planning on doing it though RSS but is there another interface I can have access to in order to make this app?
its no app for windowsmobile can you make one for professional and standard device because i want to go to the site on my samsungjack
wow that was fast. Yeah I have a lot of experience in developing for winmo using visual studio 2010 so im pretty comfortable using the pro and standard SDK.
only problem is that I was planning on hosting this project on my site but my domain registration (hydrosmobile.com) ran out - the one year lease...and im kinda broke now so im gonna have to host it here until I get some donations.
sounds great we need something like this perhaps xda should sponsor apps like these after all they benefit

oh that stinks. So i guess this is it then? Is there anything thou guys want me to add? What's different from this and the existing android thing?
EDIT:
crap! i just realized how i could have done it. I could have taken the php and read it as an XML file and parsed it until I got to the right tag and then display it in the phone. Anyway, i did learn something new.
did you like my offer
sure but may i see your site?
edit:
actually, you can have a link to some of my other stuff from here:
http://hydrosmobile.webatu.com/Default.html
sure you can see it i had send a message to you with the link
um sure....only thing is that there is already an app for this so iim not gonna try to make an app for that. If you want to referr to any of my other apps, check out

I'm looking for an app that... (users help users suggest apps)

I was thinking about this at work tonight. I don't know how well received this topic with be either. The purpose of this topic is to consolidate questions from users that are looking for an app that fits their need with suggestions from other people. I know that one person could not possibly know all the apps and games out there. Maybe you could suggest something you have seen, used, or are using now with fellow users that can't seem to find an app that does what they want to accomplish. This does not mean that if someone suggests something, that they have to teach someone how to use the program too (unless they don't mind helping them get set up or warning them about possible snafus). Sometimes there are apps that aren't in the market but on a website somewhere, and are great to have. For example, Music Junk, is a good prog to dl music (cough, cough). Google music junk android and I'm sure you will find the dev's site.
Anyways, I don't know how well of an idea this is but at least it's an attempt to help others out. I will be watching this thread as long as it stays on the first page or two of this section.
There was an app called paul's app of the day, lots of people use it, paul must be a popular guy.. idk.. looks like he's from Madaco forums.. but it did have some apps that we all know already.. but one or two that I never thought to check out. i did remove it after a week or so.. don't like to have too many apps if I don't use them.
AppBrain will suggest stuff based off what you have installed and what other users have installed in comparison to you. If I have x, Y, and Z and you have X and Y it will suggest Z.
FWIW - Paul O'Brien is the founder of MODACO...I follow him on twitter - he's like a Cyanogen in the UK. was big into G1 dev, I think he supports several devices, and did support the Hero when we first started getting roms on it.

[Links] Ad-blocking apps (no longer in Play Store)

Since Google decided to get rid of the ad-blocking apps on the Play Store, I figured it would be a good time to take a minute and post these links for a few of the more popular ones.
Of course I take no credit for anything. I only posted these links here for a quick reference when the inevitable "where did the ad-block apps go?" threads pop up. All thanks should be directed to the devs who worked hard on these apps.
You can see I do not have a donation link, and never will, because I do not want your money. If you consistently use an app, you should be willing to donate to that dev, or purchase the premium versions of apps you use.
AdFree Official - Currently their site links to Google Play, but surely they'll fix it soon.
APK DOWNLOAD
AdBlock Plus Official - Includes a direct download link.
APK DIRECT DOWNLOAD
AdAway ?Official? (code.google) - link to download F-Droid and install AdAway through F-droid.
APK DIRECT DOWNLOAD
If anyone has one you want me to add, or a better link to include, just comment and I will make the desired changes. Thanks.

This is an outrage!
A member as old as you and with so many thanks sharing this kind of stuff!
You should know many developers make money from ads.
You are destroying our very own community!
I advise you to close the thread before you get what's coming your way.

Many ad blockers were started on xda. There's nothing wrong with the op giving out info.

I am sorry that you feel this way. But the fact is that we all have a choice, always. Every man has the ability to choose but no ability to escape the necessity of choice. One of the greatest assets of Android is the ability to choose, let's not start limiting those choices on this great open platform.
You are correct that I am a senior member and I do have plenty of experience with XDA. That is why I know this is a valid topic, and the mods should not (historically speaking) have a problem with this thread. Like already pointed out, XDA played a large roll in most of these apps. However, if any mod asks that I remove this, I will. And if any dev wishes his app removed, it will be done asap.
Don't be sorry for how I feel, kid.
Using ad blockers may be good for whoever uses it, but remember you are installing an app to circumvent the value exchange of someone else's labor, going out of your way to make sure they don't get anything in return. That's stealing.
From the dictionary: steal, take (another person's property) without permission or legal right, especially secretly or by force, and without intending to return it

There are spam ads on the net, potentially malicious ad links, and those bs ultra-malicious privacy invading airpush ads, etc..
Me personally I always buy an app that I use that has a donate or premium version. And as far as the "kid" comment, I was only trying to be polite and respect your opinion, I think it is you sir that is acting like a child.
Let this be the last of this conversation, from anybody, or I will have to contact a mod about it. And like ways anybody that has a problem with this thread please contact a mod about it.
Re: Ad-blocking apps
Wow, didn't know they removed them. Makes sense though.
On the topic of ad blocking apps, what do you guys recommend?
I download torrents on my phone and whenever I tap the search box, 2 tabs of ads open up. I'm using the one built into rom toolbox pro.
Sorry for sort of stealing the thread, it was just relevant to what I want to know and seems too small of a topic to open a thread for.

Afaik there is no benefit from installing multiple adblockers, just pick the one you like the most and stick with it. The exception being AirPush ads, although some traditional blockers may block those now too..

I haven't had a problem with anything anybody has said yet; I see both sides of the story, this thread is not about that and I don't want to see it closed over petty bickering about the ethics of blocking ads. Has nothing to do with a pissing contest.
Hey
If I don't want to see ads, nobody can force me to do so.
For developers, everyone have their PayPal account and
there shouldn't be any problem donating to them by your own
money. It's better and more efficient option than watching those awful
ads everywhere and tapping on them.
I would rather send them money if they work are improving my enjoyment
of using my cellular phones. And you know people do appriciate their work.
This is my opinion.
Do not install airblocker
So I just went to find AirBlocker, the simple/clean app I use to set up and forget after ever flash.. I was surprised to see it hadn't been removed from the play store, installed, and imediately notice the malicious/malware apps it placed on my homescreen. (See attatched.) Do not install AirBlocker. I am disappoint, so heads up.
Anyone have a good AirPush blocker alternative? Although its not really needed as you shouldn't have an app installed that has AirPush built in.

Enough! Stop fighting and acting like children. This is xda and we can do what we want. If you don't like the thread then don't post in it. Go away!
Now stop fighting before it gets closed.
I updated the OP to include an apk download for AdFree (my preferred ad-blocker). I just pulled it from my phone and uploaded it to Google Drive. It is the latest version that was available from the Play Store before Google pulled it. Hopefully bigtincan fixes their official site to host the APKs themselves instead of linking to the missing Play Store link.
@WiredPirate - Thanks for starting this thread! :good:I had no idea this was happening, and I completely agree with your stance on adblocking and avoiding privacy invasion. I was about to report mateusm's priggish, provoking rants, but it looks like he got the picture..
Too bad about airblocker.. I've personally used AirPush Detector in the past, and it's open source. [dropbox link to BU'd apk] [google play link.. for now] I'm pretty critical these days about invasive ads, analytics (collects data on your personal phone usage, i.e. google analytics - watch out for this people), and especially the actual data collection via network. I've found that using a good firewall with a good ad blocker along with some advanced common sense keeps security tight regarding these concerns the majority of the time. I use Android Firewall, Adaway or Adfree, Android Tuner - to modify events triggering ads or invasive data collection, and 'advanced' or learned common sense with security and privacy protection. I think a firewall for android is increasingly necessary for android.
*Something very very important --not really related to ads but to network security and privacy protection-- to always consider is network encryption. This mostly pertains to wifi use, particularly in public or any network accessed by multiple users as a hotspot. If you're not using an encrypted network relay via proxy server when using wifi, you're taking a big risk having personal data, passwords, credit cards, fill-out form info, SSN, ***and any collected data from ads and analytics crap!!*** When accessing wifi networks over time with unencrypted personal data, expect that someone will eventually collect this data probably without even targeting you and it could be used against you. I'm just saying we all got to be careful with our multi-networking gps computer phones. I don't believe my phone should have one single ad, just like with my computer.

Application help [request]

Hello
since I'm new in developing apps,I have a request.
I work in a sale store as an IT salesman, and I have lots of tablets and phones exposed on a stand...I wanna create an app that keeps the display always on,and which shows a little presentation of our store, like the Retail Mode application the one Samsung has (http://retailsamsung.com)
Something like
- a presentation, and when you touch the screen, you can use the tablet normaly, but when the screen is off,the presentation should start by itself.
I would really apreciate some help .Thank you
(I know this isn't the place to post this, but didn't know where to.so if a mod can guide me to the right topic or something,it would be great)
First: this should be in the Android development and hacking section.
Second: I say, make a video for your store and play it on every device with Repeat: ON. You don't need an app for that.
But then again, every device I've had in my hand has a 'store demo' app installed. Look into that, might come in handy :3

thx.I used an video as a presentation, but ppl keep closing the video and tested the tablet, and when they were done,I had to start the video again.and trust me it's not easy to do that 32438 a day on 57 tablets and phones....that's why I wanted an app that started by itself.
I'm gonna look on other apps, but I'm not that good
Haha...
You'll have to earn your paycheck
