So, I got used Hermes cheap and it's my (almost) first PDA. So, I am kinda newbie and I ran to a few problems.
So, first of all, here's my biggest problem. I got a Hermes with different keyboard than in manual. I have used search and found a picture, so my keyboard looks like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=29735&d=1155484079
I tried various methods for changing my keyboard layout, but no success. I need a keyboard to type sms fast, however I should memorise all the characters or to use stylus.
Also, I am new to PDA, but I'd like to try some fast custom 6.1 ROM. I successfully flashed to 21109_Manila2D_Opera.rar, however I wonder if newer = better. What do you suggest for a beginner?
I think that these questions are quite often and you're probably tired of answering this. However, it would be great if you could help me with my problems.
Ok, here I am again. After a few hour sleep (I was tired from school), I found a solution.
I used JLAs dynamic build, which I can complement for being fast, stable and solid-looking. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446608
And I changed my keyboard layout to Swedish with advanced config. Now it all works fine.
Sorry to bother you, please delete or lock this thread.
I'm not at all technical, and therfore nervous about completely changing the ROM on my HD. I'm also paranoid about touching the registery, because I don't know what I'm doing.
There are 2 things i'd like to do:
1) modify the tabs at the bottom of the screen to get rid of all the garbage that my carrier put there, and customise it to what i want.
2) have the ability to change the functionality of the soft keys below the screen
Is there a utility or program that does either or both of these things.
Many thanks
Lost too!
Hi
im new here too! still wondering n lost about the terms and acronyms used here.
Whats TF3D? wats Manila? how do i normalise back a certain add-ons which i dun like? do i need a certain additional program to install certain add-ons? gosh, im so lost!
juz bought the phone but nothing has been done yet..
any BASIC/MUST-HAVE applications or add-ons as a start as a base?
Many thanks!
You can always flash a new ROM (thats the core.. the OS and basic apps.. and on your phone all that stuff you operator added) theres a wiki how to do it. Flashing a rom is similar to flashing the bios on your PC. Most things are editable. You can get "Cooked" ROMs those are Cores that people have modified, added to, customized and tweaked.
manila is the the tab interface you see on touch phones there's Manila 2d and newer TF3D - (TouchFlo 3d)
There's tons of freeware and opensource available and what is "must" have is largely opinion and what you do with your phone. it's good to browse here for apps and in Blackstone/ROMs for ROMs.
things to be aware of your phone is WVGA.. big screen not all apps will fill it if they are qvga or vga. also you have almost no buttons so everything is touch... this can be a problem with some apps as they expect/require buttons. But newer apps are improving to support purely touch base control.
hope this helps you can always msg me if u have questions.

Most addons come as .cab files you copy them to your phone and execute then.. run them and theyll install.. theyll ask phone memory or card storage. i put most things on the card and only install key things for the phone to run in its memory. to uninstall any cab or some programs that are exe and you run from desktop they install to phone. you can uninstall them either from activesync remove programs, or from your phone settings/system/ remove program and they uninstall.

Please don't try to change the ROM now, I would recommend you play first with the HD and learn it.
Answers:
1. There are many options - one is:
Stevedpl7 TF3D Tab Icon Theme 5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ight=stevedpl7
2. You can program the soft keys in many of the config tools - one is:
JS Advanced Configuration Tool 3.3 http://www.touchxperience.com/en/adv...tion-tool.html
Finally, while the application list is always personal, I suggest reviewing mine at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3117017&highlight=secondtoday#post3117017
Good luck !
Thank you sooo much guys - that's about the level of tech-ness I can cope with right now. I think I'll shy away from loading a new ROM for a while, as suggested. I just sounds like it'd too risky for a dunce like me, and the consequences appear to be potentially quite dire.
I have found and installed HDTweaks, and that allowed me to configure the softkeys. Now all I have to do is find a way to change / reallocate / rearrange the tabs.
Thanks again for your "sympathy" and help.
Cheers.
Okay so for Christmas I got the HTC Tilt 2 with WM6.5 on the AT&T network. Its a great phone but I want to make it better. Through some google searches and what not I found this site and knew i had to join anyway....
Okay so one think I am desperately looking for is a flash player, mainly so I can watch youtube videos. I tried Adobe Flash Lite but it didnt work and the youtube mobile app didn't work either. So anyway know of any good flash player?
Another thing is this is my first smart phone my last phone (some samsung thing) could barely call and text people so im still learning the ropes with this thing and have therefore never edited anything on my phone. So a basic description of like what exactly a ROM is and Flashing a ROM. Also is a skin for TF3D just a skin or is it like I guess what you call a ROM? Then the Radio I am almost sure when it says "Flash a Radio" its not talking about the FM AM kind is it?
Also I have seen some pretty sweet skins but I dont plan on changing my skin every week so I am looking for just an amazing skin! So if you know any sleek, modern, colorful, simplistic, clean skins a quick link would be great!
Bah! While I am asking all these questions can someone please explain why the HTC Tilt 2 (or any HTC phone for that matter) fall under the "Rhodium" category and what relation does it have to the phone.
Again just trying to familiarize myself with what I am doing before i do this so called "Flashing".
Also any basic info that may help a person like me.
Again thanks in advanced for the help looking forward to being more part of this community!
Congrats on getting the device. You'll either love it or hate it...
Re: Flash player
The new Pocket IE browser supports built in flash. I recall there's another browser that does as well, but I can't remember. Skyfire? Someone else should be able to come up with the name...
Re: definition of ROM and Radio
Suggest you to read about them in the wiki. ROM is your device's firmware. Radio is the software that controls your cellular reception and GPS.
Skin for TF3D does not equal ROM. Essentially it's a theme. Before installing themes, make sure the theme is made for your version of manila. But if it's a cab file, you can simply uninstall to reverse any changes.
Re: the name of your device
The Tilt2 is the same as HTC Touch Pro2. Rhodium is HTC's code name for this family of devices. The "Tilt" name is just AT&T's branding.

So, I got this phone back in September. This was also my first smartphone. I read and read through all the tutorials here on ROMs, radios, flashing, and registry tweaks. The answers to the majority of your questions are in the FAQs/XDA-Wiki.
HTC YouTube App: I think there's a fix available here on XDA. I think itt has something to do with editting the connection settings. You might want to search for that using the search function of the forum.
ROM (flashing): think of it as like upgrading your PC from XP to Vista or Vista to 7.
TF3D (aka Manila or Sense): a UI (user interface) it's sort of a skin on top of Windows Mobile. Since WM is old and appearance hasn't improved that much, HTC implemented this UI to cover up some flaws of WM.
Radio-ROM: No, that's not the FM Radio. It's a software thing that handles the phone capabilities of the phone (the Tilt2 is a PDA/phone).
(Changing) Themes: There's a lot of themes out there to suit our personalities! Go look! Besides, when you get addicted to flashing, you'll get used to changing things and setting things up over and over again!
Rhodium: (I just completed a Chemistry course; I never knew this was an element on the Periodic Table!) HTC code name of the Touch Pro2 and Tilt2.
Feel free to PM me if you need any help. Like I said, it's also my first smartphone, and I would have to say I learned a lot since I first got it (pretty recently). So I would know what you're experiencing right now.

Yes, Skyfire has full flash support and is very fast because everything goes through SkyfireLab servers. However, video playback quality will be horrible (especially YouTube!).
I just remembered, if you go to m.youtube.com in Opera Mobile Browser and you press on a video, the video will play in the HTC Video Player. So, it's not really playing in the browser; it's like you're downloading the video into your Tilt2.
Ah ok cool. Yea I have skyfire I forgot it did flash but the resolution is a bit fuzzy. Pretty sure I will love it just as soon as I figure out what in the world im doing! Since I love customizing and tweaking things which is the main reason I didnt go with an iPhone that and the full QWERTY keyboard.
I guess I shall read the wiki/faq
Welcome to forums
You had a great gift for Xmas!!
I assume you still have the stock ROM, which I personally think it´s crap...
I would recommend to install a cooked ROM from this great site!
Onalmost any cooked ROM you have the youtube app so you can see videos
Have a deep read on the Rhodium Wiki so you start to familiarize with all that you can do
Good luck and don´t forget to vote!
Yea love the phone but yes I still have the Stock ROM (hey I know what I am talking about now!) yes it is crap. Not liking the fact that it constantly stays at 74% RAM.
Oh you just reminded me abotu another question of mine.
How do I get rid of all the freakin trail ware that came pre-loaded on this phone! I think I read in multiple places most good ROMS should get rid of that.

LOL I think every ROM here gets rid of that crapware!
Ok good because it keeps me up at night just knowing that its on my phone >
Ok cool just read the Wiki found a list of ROMs that look great > just 2 possible more questions
1) Ok so it says I should back up my phone completely before flashing which makes sense. But to where? I have my conacts and stuff on Microsoft MyPhone but Im pretty sure my apps and everything else isnt on there. Do i Just copy all the phones files and paste them somewhere on my computer?
2) Just incase something goes horribly wrong is there a Hard Reset on the phone that No matter what the phone will go back to factory reset. Even after flashing?
There is a YouTube app included on the Tilt 2. It is hidden from the Start Menu by default. If you open File Manager and browse to the Windows directory, you will find YouTube there. Once you launch it for the first time, it should also be referenced in the Start Menu, or at least in the "All Programs" list option in the TF3D Programs tab. If not, you can easily COPY the youtube.lnk file from the Windows directory to Windows\Start Meny\Programs and it will show up.
The app is clean and tight, and supports the native controls of the phone (eg, the volume rocker controls volume).
I cant seem to find it I browsed the programs list and there was no YouTube Program unless its called something else.
Anyway as posted abotu still have 2 questions:

1. If you have the .cabs of your apps, save them onto your PC (I have a designated folder for all my cabs, worth over 400MB!). After you flash, you're going to have to re-install them (automatically or manually, depending on if you use Sashimi, Sprite, Seven, or UC_setup [UC is only possible if it is supported by the ROM]).
2. If you flashed, your stock ROM has been overwritten, so if you hard reset, it will flash to the factory defaults that is in the flashed ROM. To go back to stock, you will need to flash back to the stock ROM, which you should find in the link posted in the above post.
Oh ok thanks for all the answers appriciate it I think I might do it this weekend if i get the time.
First off, welcome.
Next before you do ANYTHING read then re-read any and all wiki's and tutorials on the Rhodium. Learn your device inside and out FIRST before attempting to make tweaks or rom changes. If you don't read then re-read, your Christmas present can become a pretty paperweight -aka- bricking your device.
pIE and Skyfire both have Flash capabilities.
The Rhodium IS cpabale of being used as a radio, but you need to install the right cab file...again read.
That being said, a radio usually refers to the part of the phone that receives a signal so you can use it as a phone. Don't mess with THAT radio until you have read and re-read the wiki's and tutorials.
Flashing a rom means to change your operating system to a "cooked" one...one made using a windows mobile base, but specially tweaked by someone here at xda. These cooked roms cannot be flashed without first unlocking your phone. Again READ or you can brick it. Also know that flashing a cooked rom has the potential to void any warranty you have...so back up your stock rom before attempting a rom flash. It is also good to have this back up in the event that you don't like a cooked rom you have installed.
There is a great thread that lists cab files to some really good applications, which will customize your device even more. You can also create your own ringtones, and tweak the device. Again, before any major installations or registry tweaks I strongly urge you to learn all you can first, by reading the wiki's and tutorials.
I have been with xda since my wizard came out a few years ago, and I have seen far too many eager "noobs" brick their devices.
I have only had my rhodium for a month. I am still learning my device. I still have a stock rom because I am not yet comfortable with my knowledge of the Rhodium. The stock rom blows by comparison to the cooked roms, but until I am comfortable with my device, I am happy to remain stock until I learn all I need to.
Once you learn your device, you will need to join Flashers Anonymous...because like most of us here, our phones become really fun toys with pretty much unlimited possiblities...so again, welcome...and read, read, read.
I have tried all three cabs below with zero success! Yes, these cabs remap if that the letters on the hardware keyboard but do nothing for the top row and symbols in blue. I can live without remapping the OK key if thats such a feat but need all other keys at least to be mapped the way they are suppose to be, they way they look on the hardware keyboard. Im sure many other users here will agree with me on this and hopefully others will pitch in as well.
Just looking for a simple cab to install so when i flash a custom rom that i can have FULL use of my hardware keyboard on my att tilt2, no more and no less. I have no knowledge in this stuff or id do it myself rather then provide stickies of a cab that does only half the job!
Since half the keyboard is already remapped, i will start the donation/bounty at $10USD and will add more if this can be done quick. If there's multiple people in on creating this for the community then i will be sure everyone truly involved gets a fair share as well.
Im no techy, just an end user but don't see this task to be complete rocket science.
What the hell !!! The symbols in blue???? Those are controled with the funtion key (FN) on the keyboard.

Yes of course they are. Im saying not only to remap the keys in white but also the ones controlled by the FN key, the symbols in blue. I dont believe my description is hard to understand. Simply look at an att tilt2 hardware keyboard, now have it work as it should, thats it! Not asking for anything else, just for all the keys on the hardware keyboard to work as they do when you first turn it on using the stock rom. Need a cab so it will work on custom roms since were not here to run stock roms.
Dont really know how else i can spell it out? Maybe take a picture of the att tilt2 hardware keyboard and post it?
I use the first one you list and all of my Keys work fine on my AT&T Tilt 2.

I put that second script, install the cab (MortScript) then run the script file. soft reset and your good.
Some applications are weird and they swap the keys back to the original TP2 settings, but its very rare. It seems to work fine for me other than that. OH and when trying to use the hardware keys when dialing for a phone call its not right.. But I don't really use that anyways.

What rom are u using including build? I used the mort pacakge just as u described after a fresh flash of nrgs latest rom of build 23518 on wm6.5.3 standard sense 2.1 and nothing bro! Only keys that work right for me are the letter keys, comma, period, and question mark. Well FN, shift are also mapped correctly as well. Every key on the top row is numbers 1-0 and the blue symbol keys are all over the place! This is killing me!
No, you dont need to explain. I understood your post and as you can see, i am on a custom rom with the tilt 2 and all my buttons work perfect, except for the OK key. I also use the first cab in your OP. As for dialing, as pointed out by a respose here, have no clue if mine works that way. I use the onscreen dialer.
Something must be wrong with your phone!!!!
Im using NRGZ's Leo Rom the 21885 version from 12/31.... It could be an issue with the 23518 builds. The OK button has never worked but dont really need it. I would try it on a 21885 build and if it doesnt work it sounds like device specific. You also could flash a Stock Rom back on then back to a Custom one sometimes some of the previous system files arent removed correctly I have heard.
I have an att tilt 2 as well, and after flashing any rom other then att my keyboard is all wrong also, mainly the top row, and the Fn keys. Its pretty funny though without a remap, my shift key works as the FN key, and my OK key works as a shift key, which I find funny. But attached is the cab I always have used every time, and every key with the exception of the OK key works, I have tested this 1,000,000 times. If this cab doesnt work (Which I think could be the third cab in your list but not sure), then you have a bad keyboard.
I have used this cab with, the stock EU rom, nrgz roms, valkyrie's roms, Arks roms.
I have remapped my keyboard layout easily by editing the keyboard txt-file....was no big problem....every row is listed in his file, and you can put in whatever letter/symbol you want....
little hijack
Sorry for hijacking the thread a little. I've got a dilemma here, I'm about to change my physical keyboard (in fact the whole casing) for the one that has tilt2 layout (or maybe just the casing leaving the old keyboard untouched). How do you Tilt2 guys manage without the "Ctrl" key?!!!

Most people will think you are crazy, most tilt2 people want the standard tp2 keyboard. but to your question: since the ok button doesnt work, I mapped "OK" using keyboard config to be a CTRL button

Is it the ATT keypad.dll? and you just open it with a text editor like notepad or something? I have been searching and it seems like that is what I should be looking for but I just want to make sure. Thanks in advance.
Sorry Deeznuts, but either you aren't explaining it right (which I think you are) or (more likely) there is something wrong. I have a Tilt 2\ATT and the keyboard fix cabs do work in every ROM I have installed. (With the exeption of only about three blue keys like the shortcut to mail or the internet.) There is either something wrong with your device or the ROM that you are using. I suggest you start over with a different ROM to test your keyboard, maybe use a stock ROM to be sure. There is also a prog called Rhodium Keyboard Control (RhodiumKbdControl_GSM.cab) that might be of use. Good luck.
I've been using the Tilt2HWKeyboard.cab and all the symbols and numbers work fine.
OK button does not work, sometimes it launches opera, other times i get error message with something about start.exe
FN+Left arrow (supposed to be calendar) Launches opera
FN+Down arrow (supposed to launch internet browser) does nothing
FN+Right arrow (supposed to turn on wifi) opens up comm manager.
I don't mind that those are off, but would prefer the OK button to work and also PTT button does not work at all.
I'm down to put in $10 as well to get a cab that has the full use of the HW keyboard + PTT button

I was looking at that text files, and it appears to be mapped correctly, but the top row is still messed up for me and the blue function keys are not correct either.
Can you post how you modified the text file please?
Mine works fine. I used instructions from a certain thread. I first installed the Tilt2HWKeyboard cab. I then installed a cab called SdkCerts. Then I installed a cab called RhodiumKbdControl_GSM.
$20 for 1 single step install at&t tilt2 keyboard ALL BUTTONS MUST WORK INCLUDING PTT AND OK BUTTON I DONT CARE IF IS A MORT SCRIPT A CAB OR XML
Hes NOT CRAZY lol
I have the same exact issue. ive tried different cabs to no change except . ? , still sont know where the hell at symbol is... I GOT 10 usd for a working cab or a soloution where every key works as should...besides a stock re flash!
What apps are you running bro? Im running the apr8 nrg rom too. idk! dont make sense to me. but even when i ran stock rom keys would switch to this configuratio noccasionally in txt msging!
i would close all the way out of txt and open it back up and keys back to normal. Im seriously about burned out on hunting fixes for these damned phones, stock and otherwise. Ive owned every HTC w a slide keyboard that att offered since 8125 (wizard)
and played hunt and fix on every single one. seriously, what other product would u pay 400 plus dollars for and then spennd countless hours searching for fixes just to make it work properly
Hi all,
please excuse the vagueness of this post.
I have just been given a tp2 as a replacement to my td2
My wife also has the tp2 which she got a year ago
the whole look of the phone (software ) is totally diferent
for instance the program page used to list a few progs (your choice) and then you had to hit all progs to get them up.
i am guessing that its a different rom or different version of sense?
also how do i change/edit/remove some programs from the list?
cheers guys
you'll need a registry editor to get the job done here, you can find that in the Theme's and apps section, i'll be back with a link, but you have to navigate to --
HKLM\Software\HTC\EnlargeMenu
and where you see
EnableManilaStartMenu = 1
change the one to a zero and restart the phone, should work.
thanks for that
sorry to be thick but does that just enable me to move the prog icons or delete the progs as well
appreciate the help

You don't need to edit the registry to turn off Manila. This is easily done from the Today settings.

Different issues, my friend. Sense is the UI (aka Manila versions 2.1 and 2.5) you see when you start the phone. It is on by default, but you can turn it off in the Today setup and use the much less memory intensive standard Window Mobile screen. Go into the Today setup and turn off Sense by removing the check mark in the list and putting a check mark on Windows Default.
As for the bloatware that comes with the phone, anything on the ROM can not be removed except by flashing a new ROM. You can delete shortcuts from your start menu for programs you don't/won't use, but the programs will still be there. Do a search for Crud Scraper, a neat little tool that can 'remove' stuff from specific phone models (it worked great on my Tilt 2). Beyond that, read up as much as you can on modding your phone. This place is a great resource. Unfortunately, easy answers are hard to come by. You have to roll up your sleeves and get a little dirty.
