Cell Antenna hosing battery - Galaxy S I9000 Android Development

Does battery usage increase significantly while the APN is enabled?
I tested it even without auto-sync enabled and it seems to get through about 6-7% per hour (with the screen off!)
With APN turned off it barely uses 1% per hour!
I'm using the XWJG5 release with doc's deodexed rom installed and the sd card lag fix.
Anyone else experience this?

that is normal, even when using the HTC Athena or any other phones that uses EDGE, 2G, 3G, etc
next time please post these sort of questions / comments to the "Galaxy S I9000 General" forum instead of Development.

DHD roms (2g/3g, energy)

Hello everybody, I was wondering if anyone know of any ROM that allows to switch from 2g to 3g (or viceversa) automatically to some apps, like juicedefender, or extended controls. I think Cyanogenmod allows it, but I heard it doesn't provide a good energy administration.
And in the other hand, as I talked about energy administration, what ROM do you think works better for battery in DHD?
Thank you guys!
after all this time... nobody?
You can't toggle 2g/3g for some apps only, it's kinda global, for the entire system...
I think he means that it triggers the switch on some apps.

the switch between 2G and 3G has not direct relation to the type or form of application, it can only be manually selected by the user, this is the fact that in areas where 3G is unavaliable or weak, the phone may switch to 2G to ensure a stronger, more stable signal. keep in mind, mobile data (2G or 3G) also consume a relative part of your battery
I know that there is relative difference between 2G and 3G power consumption but the type of ROM and Kernel is a major part in determining the battery life. The current set up I use gives me approximately drain of 15% for 6 hours with approximately 30 txt and 10 minutes of call time all through 3G signals with the WIFI switched on. with a battery life like that, switching to 2G is relatively pointless. doubt it would save substantially.

Does WIFI use power if its not connected?

I See my wifi has used 30% of my battery but ive been on 3G all day, does it drain the battery searching for networks?
It does use some power when searching for networks. There is probably an APP or settings that you can change to set the Freq of checks maybe. Or you can just turn of the Wifi radio when you know your not going to use it.

Yes it uses a lot of power if its regularly searching for networks. Especially if you're moving around and seeing dozens of WiFi spots. Just turn off WiFi when not in use, simple as that.
A lot of custom ROMs have less aggressive Wifi seeking intervals. You can usually set it manually with ease too. Lots of apps out there if you don't want to do it manually.
All that was said is true, but still I find that 30% usage for Wifi just for searching nearby networks is a little too much...
Although I haven't got anything to compare with, I always turn wifi off if I'm not using it during long periods.
Regards
I turn wifi off when it is not needed and battery life goes from one to two days.

I've been using Tasker to turn wifi on at home/work and off when I'm elsewhere. It's using cell towers to determine location, so hopefully it won't impact the battery much.
I leave wifi on 24/7, today it has used 2% of the 60% battery i've used.
I travel through london so I assume it is constantly finding new wifi signals.

Y5 Battery Saver .. on the market, free. Turns on/off Wifi based on known networks and cells in the area of the AP.

I leave wifi on all the time as well, and I also only have used 2% of the 70-80% battery I used up already.
Try going into wifi settings, then advanced wifi settings, then turn off the new wifi network available notification option.
This increased my battery life slightly.

Y5 - Battery Saver helps out tremendously! I barely ever use more than 2% when home all day...although that may be a bug but I started a thread for that already.

That 30% displayed can be deceptive since it's based on the amount of battery discharged and not entire battery capacity.
Well wifi, when on is looking to connect to known networks. If the signal is weak it will disconnect and connect to another network near by if there is that has better signal. This process does use some battery. The biggest drain will occur when you are actively using wifi, that is when you download or upload. So the best way to save battery, is to close wifi when not needed. If however you want wifi you can set it to never sleep. This way even if the screen goes off wifi will be connected and your device wont use the 3G which is way more power hungry.

Native SIP battery drain

I have been playing with the native internet calling features on my VZW Nexus to use when I switch to GSM. Everyone ive seen has said not to have 'recieve calls' selected because of battery drain. the weird thing is that I dont have any noticable change when I am using the feature. Is there any documented proof of how much drain it causes?

Cycling from H+ to 3G

Having some issues with my Note II's battery life while on mobile data (1-2% per hour idle, vs. 0.5-0.6% per hour idle on wifi), and I suspect the culprit is a rapid cycling that happens where the phone goes from H+ to H to 3G, then cycles back to H+. This process repeats itself every minute or two at most, making me strongly suspect that the phone is searching for LTE (which isn't up where I live yet, but is up and running five miles to my south and east).
Any way to make it stop cycling like that without having to remove the SIM and deselect LTE entirely? Or is that not really doing anything to my battery at all, and I need to look somewhere else for the answer? Wakelocks are pretty clean.

3G icon flip is normal on International rom base used on ATT device.
Sounds like 3rd party app..maybe Google services is hitting data not being able to complete transaction and with that comes lots of data icon flip.
Go into setting & disable Google sync see if that helps , If so you will want to go into Applications and clear cache in Google apps your using
I had this problem using a foreign SIM card here in Mexico. I fix the problem by changing ROM to stock and the cycle stopped.

5.1.1 WiFi/Cell Standby Battery Drain

Anyone else getting this after the update? Cell standby is absolutely killing my battery when WiFi is on. Turning it off, I'm (kind of) back to normal. I've done a factory reset, forgotten my WiFi then cleared the cache, and it's still the same. My phone was running perfectly fine before, now I regret installing the update.
I am not. I have better battery when on Wi-Fi.
Samsung Galaxy s6 Battery Drain
i have the same problem with my galaxy s6, since I made the update the cell standby is killing my battery, i use lte all the day because of that..
Battery life has been abysmal for me since the update as well. Samsung needs to fix this ****.

Turn wifi on, let it connect, then go forget your connection. Reboot into recovery, wipe cache, then reboot your phone. It has worked for me so far. Cell Standby still shows up on the list but I'm only losing about 2% battery/hour with moderate texting.
It is an issue with WiFi! I have tried all the fixes found in a google search for "S6 Edge Cell Standby Battery Drain". Here is what I found from my testing:
Day 1: All day with WiFi on, with good cell coverage. Had to charge twice throughout the day, and Cell Standby was at about 40% each time I put it on the charger. Charged overnight to 100%
Day 2: All day with WiFi off, same location as Day 1. Battery never drained past 30% with the same amount of use. Cell Standby at the bottom of my list at 1%. Charged overnight to 100%
Day 3: All Day with WiFi on, using WiFi calling. (VoLTE turned off) Same result as Day 1. Had to charge multiple times throughout day and Cell Standby at 40%.
VoLTE turned off, cleared cache, factory reset. Tmobile device running 5.1.1
I think the issue here pertains to what apps are installed and not necessarily running actively.
I you have any or several social networking apps ( Fb, Skype, instagram, twitter ) you don't even have to use them because they are always busy in the background unless you setup auto stop.
I have no social networking apps installed or active so my system runs very lean, have seen cell standby but never higher than 2% or 3%.
I have ran my WiFi all day while at home and connected to a network and have gotten a full day with 20% to 10% left on the battery.
Now results would be different if you travel and aren't connected to a network.
I'm in a metropolitan area with great lte 4g signal and don't use WiFi that often and just using 4g I have gotten great battery life to the tune of 30+ hours with battery to spare.
Do some app inventory.

This has worked for me so far. I'll use the day to test whether or not it's a successful workaround solution. Thank you :good:

I tried this, unfortunately didn't work for me. Battery drain is making me hate this phone with each passing day.
My issue is NOT app related.
I Factory reset, then ran two days of testing.
After factory reset, I also cleared cache again.
No social media apps configured.
Turned on phone from reset and setup google account only.
No apps installed, aside from factory apps.
My tests are with VoLTE turned off and WiFi calling turned off.
*Day 1 - WiFi off completely*
100% charge at 0700, used it all day at work and home. Cell Standby used 1% total and I ended the day at 2300 with over 50% battery remaining.
*Day2 - WiFi on all day*
100% charge at 0700, used it all day at work and home. Cell Standby used 43% total and my battery died at about 1530.
T-Mobile support stated it was a known issue, Samsung could not "troubleshoot" it properly and just wants me to ship it in for "repair". They did suggest taking my device to a "Samsung Experience Shop" in my local Best Buy. I did and they factory reset the phone. They also informed me that this is an issue with the S6 Edge, and that the factory reset is not going to resolve my issue.

What can we help with: Galaxy S6 Edge, "Cell Standby" is draining my battery FAST, if I have WiFi turned on. I have factory reset device, cleared cache, turned off VoLTE, tried with and without WiFi calling turned on, it is ONLY an Issue if I am connected to a WiFi network. Doesn't matter if it's 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz.
T-Mobile : Hi!
T-Mobile : I'm sorry to know if Cell Standby is draining your battery fast when connected to WiFi. I'd be very happy to help you out!
T-Mobile : Is this for line XXXX?
You : yes
T-Mobile : All right, I'm checking on a few things. One moment please.
You : thanks
T-Mobile : You're welcome. May I have your phone's software version please? Here's how to check:
You : 5.1.1
T-Mobile : From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
Tap Settings.
Scroll down to 'System,' and then tap About device.
Read the baseband version on the phone.
You : I am on the most recent firmware, based on the T-Mobile support site
T-Mobile : Great! Please bear with me.
You : Baseband is G925TUVU2COF6
T-Mobile : I appreciate that, one moment please.
T-Mobile : Thanks for waiting. I checked on this further and see that this a known issue that Samsung is aware of and is hoping to get fixed by next update.
You : any timeline for this issue resolution? I don't want to use up all my data, just so that my phone will stay powered on for an entire day
You : If I turn off WiFi, my battery performs normally, and can get through about 2 days without charging ... If WiFi is turned on, I can't even get through an entire day
T-Mobile : My apologies but there is no timeline as we speak yet. One recommendation I see here is to turn off Smart Network Switching in your WiFi settings. Here's how:
T-Mobile : From the home screen, tap the Apps icon.
Tap Settings.
Tap Wi-Fi.
Tap MORE.
Tap Smart network switch.
Tap Off.
You : That is turned off
T-Mobile : Oh, I see. I apologize but we'll need to wait until the next update from Samsung. You may contact them directly at (888) 987-HELP (4357).
You : I have ... they stated I needed to send my device in for repair.
T-Mobile : Oh, we are unable to replace the phone since the issue is software related. This all started after the 5.0.1 update.
T-Mobile : This should be addressed by next software release.
You : it started the day I took the phone out of the box, 3 weeks or so ago. Got an update to 5.1.1 in the 2nd week, but the issue remains
T-Mobile : I understand where you are coming from. WiFi bug fix should be included in next software update. We are still standing by for more information from Samsung as to approximate of the release.
You : thank you
T-Mobile : You're welcome! Your patience and understanding is truly appreciated. Anything I may have missed for you today?

I too have great 4G signal here, and if I leave WiFi off, I also get great battery life. The issue is when WiFi is ON. No matter what, I MUST have access to a charger if I use WiFi at all throughout my day.

That makes sense, especially if the wifi radio is scanning all the time looking for networks to connect to.
We should have the option to "turn off" wifi scanning and turn on when needed.

Although not ideal, turning off wifi fixes the issue for me.
Any news on this issue? My phone immediately start to lag and drain out the battery when I connect it to a wifi. On cellular it works fine though. This should not be a hard one to straighten out!
