I installed the PC36IMG on the root of my SD card...now when I go into the updating, it says, "Main Version is Older! Update Fail! Do you want to reboot the device? Yes or No"
Why is this happening? Do I need an updated version of some sort??
I have tried rooting this phone using 4 different guides...both versions of the 3 Click method (regular and OTA edition), then some YouTube videos...direct from the author of the 3 Click Method guide. I get the same message every single time.
What am I doing wrong? What is going on? Please help. Thanks in advance!

This is essentially the same guide that I used for the other 4 or 5 guides I tried. None of these is working. It will not recognize the file on my SD card.

Those instructions for rooting will only work if your running pre 1.47 software. Based on the error your mentioning your most likely on version 1.47. The easiest way to root if your on this software version can be found here: hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720565
replace xx with tt, I still cant post links.
I used that Simple Root as well, which takes you back a software version. You have to find another ROM if you want to be on 1.47... I initially used this one just to get on 1.47, but there are many other better options out there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915&highlight=stock+root
also take note of this:
Note: This process will only work if you already have the engineering HBOOT. (If you have NAND unlocked, you already have it and can proceed confidently.) If you'd like to check the actual version, you can boot into HBOOT and look near the top of the screen: it should say HBOOT-0.76.2000, not 0.79.0000. If you have 0.79.0000, you will need to do Toast's Part 2 first before starting here.
I had the same problem. I had 1.47 and tried everything I could. Used Simpleroot OTA on Windows XP with no luck. Everything went smoothly until step 4, when I got the same error. Went home and used Simpleroot on my Win 7 machine and worked like a charm. It seems the problem was simply that I was using XP, although I have a bevy of cellular drivers that could have been interfering as well.
Try going to the link below on a Windows 7 machine and follow the instructions carefully. Make sure you have .net 4 and HTC sync installed beforehand. Both are linked in the forum post.
forum_xda-developers_com/showthread_php?t=720565
(replace _ with .) Sorry, apparently I can't post links yet.
Unfortunately I don't have a Windows 7 machine.
I only have XP and Vista. The OTA Simple Root says, "Not Allowed Access / Denied Permission" or something when it tries to write to the card in the very first step.
This sucks.

OK, I also have a Moto Droid, and its MUCH easier to root those phones. But now I have a Evo 4G as well, and want to root it for what its worth.
Problem:
I follow Toasts guide to rooting (part 1) (sorry, cant post links yet)
I follow the steps exactly. Copy over the PC36IMG.zip file to the SD card, and boot into HBOOT. It scans the file like it should, then says "Main Version is older!, Update Fail!"
I cant get past this point no matter what I try.
HBOOT-0.79.0000
I have ADB set up and everything recognizes everything else just fine, but this is where I am getting stuck. Any ideas?
I think post #2 in toasts thread has new links to uncorrupted files. The pc36 zip should be 172mb on your had.

Dont think this is the right place for this, but it sounds like you have the newer software on your phone and need to follow the 1.47 rooting method.
Yeah, I have the new 1.47 software. I followed 3 different rooting methods that say they work with the new OTA release, which is what I have.
Belongs in Q&A.
You have the 1.47 update, so toasts method won't work, do some looking around before posting.
You have the newer bootloader, so you must use the newer root method.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=718889
Or you can try Simpleroot:

I have done LOTS of looking around, searching posts, multiple sites, and I finally had to post about it. I spend more time on droidforums, so its a little different.
Step 4 of the SimpleRoot app, doesnt seem to work. It says Starting Part2, but never does anything. Does that part usually say that, or should it be doing something?
Hey, I'm trying to NAND Unlock my HTC Evo and I came across a problem with the PC36 file. It gives me an error I'm assuming because I have the latest update that says "Main version is older". On top of this, I have a macbook and it seems I can't use simpleroot. Does anybody know of another method to nand unlock that wouldn't be too complicated? I'm quite the noob. Thanks in advance XDA and everyone else!

Use SimpleRoot. It can be found under the development section.

I think if you use unrevoked3 first then you can do this it will allow you to do everything from the phone you must use unrevoked3 first to get su priveledges. that you can search for.

Thanks so much, I'm about to give this a shot. I'll let you know.
Well that sucks, it still is giving me the "main version is older" error.
You should be able to use this to get a custom recovery
http://www.unrevoked.com/recovery/
Then do this to gain full root and nand unlock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732834
follw this very carefully, do just what it says and you should be good to go, this is the long way around but as you have a mac it is the only way i know how to do it. Somebody else may chime in if there is a better way.
The unrevoked site has an option for mac as you should see it for download there.
Ahhh, yeah the issue is I have 1.47.

If you run unrevoked three then use that method from the video you should be able to get full root and nand unlocked. just did it on a spare evo.
This may be considered a stupid question, but should I be downloading these files to my phone or just dropping them in the file as a disk drive?
the unrevoked you run from your computer, the others are dropped on the root of your sd card, i believe the instructions tell you exactly what to do, just do that verbatim and you will be fine
Hey guys,
I'll start with a heads up; complete newb here so I hope i have the right forum/section. Furthermore I appologise for my English, it is not my native language so I hope I can make myself clear. So far for the disclaimers.
Here's the situation; I have a Dutch HTC desire and I am absolutely lost in the rooting proces. I'll give you guys my specs first;
Phone
- HTC Desire running Android 2.2 Froyo from the OTA update
- Hboot version 0.92.0001
- NO Goldcard, regular microSD 4 gig that came with the device, haven't altered it
- Radio 5.09.00.20
PC:
- Windows 7 x64
- HTC Sync installed
Now I want root, preferebly with OpenDesire and A2SD so have been googling about the entire weekend now, but haven't found any guides that match my specs fully, havent got a clue where to start really with the rooting process. For instance; most downgrading guides talk about needing to use Hboot 0.92, where mine is 0.92.0001. Also some guides tell me I need a goldcard, others say I don't.
This is where I'm at right now, having read several guides these are the steps I think I have to take;
1. Backup everything using Mybackuppro
2. Downgrade using PB99IMG.ZIP. Is this correct, and will it work with my Hboot? Will I need a Goldcard for this?
3. Root the phone using Unrevoked. Will this work, concedering I have HTC Sync installed, and if no will a normal uninstall through the Windows programs uninstall be sufficient for "Uninstall HTC Sync completely" or are further meassures required? Will it work on my radio version, or is this not of any matter at this point?
I believe that at this point, my phone is worthless, right? There is no rom installed, so at this point I would need to install a rom. So on to step 4;
4. Install OpenDesire rom. I have read things about it having to be a zip file, the files I found though were .exe's Will the .exe do, or have I found the wrong files? Also I read that in order for the camera to work on OD, i need radio version 5.x, which I do. Will the rooting/downgrading proces make any changes to the radio version also?
5. Is this it? Have I missed anything, or are these roughly the steps I have to take to downgrade from 2.2, root, and install OD (which I believe also is a 2.2 version, with the JIT correct?)
Any tips, advises and remarks would be highly appriciated, coming from an ancient Nokia E65 I'm sort of unsure how to handle Android, how import small nuances like the exact version of Hboot are.
Also, if I have left out any important information please do not hesitate to ask, i'll reply ASAP.
Not one reply? Anyone?

Dude did u manage to root your desire let me know ? i can pm you the links
You probably have the new phones which is with the SLCD screens. There is currently only 1 method to root those. But you need to operate with a black screen. Which means you won't be sure if you really pressed the right option or not. Try search for the SLCD root for HTC Desire.

Downgrading will require a goldcard if your phone is network branded. It is necessary to root your phone.

Still have the AMOLED version, not the SLCD one... Was one the first with a Desire in Holland, just sort of late with rooting it... and now there's hundreds of outdated tuturials, making it hard to figure out which ones still work

Ok, thx. I bought the phone without any form of network branding, your post implies that I will not be needing a goldcard then, correct? Or do I need it anyway for A2SD?
Right, what ROM is on it at the moment? IF it's 2.09.405.8 then do the following...
Download this file:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...8U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed_txt.zip
and rename it PB99IMG.zip (not PB99IMG.zip.zip!!) and copy to the root of your SD card. Turn phone off and boot into HBOOT by holding Vol-down whilst turning it on. Follow the instructions and allow it to update (assuming it works). Once done, reboot and you'll be back on 1.21.405.x and you can now root your phone using unrEVOked
OR
Read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
If you run this utility it will tell you if you need a goldcard. If you do need one, you can quit it, make one, and run it again.

The problem with the first method is that it corrupts your misc partition, which will need fixing. The second one takes care of everything.
Worked like a charm guys, thanks so much! Running OpenDesire right now, absolutely love it! Thanks again!

So I just got my Incredible today. Unboxed it and am trying to root.
I've been following the steps to the T on here http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_HTC_Incredible#Unrevoked_Method
But after pushing all the files it says to push and then doing the "chmod" stuff when I get to the step to do "/data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin" it just repeats the line then says "permission denied.
Then I just tried to continue and do the next step.
"chmod cd/data/local" then it just says "Bad mode"
I then still continue with the steps till I get to the last one
"./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin" and again it just says "permission denied"
So after all this not working I did a factory reformat of the phone and tried again. Still same out come on everything. Then I tried the unrEVOked method and I the HBOOT drivers but the program just says "Failed to flash recovery image"
I have successfully installed AndroidSDK and I know this because I upgraded from the HTC Eris and I've rooted that. I have all the correct drivers (I think at least that stupid VZW media thing may be interfering)
So I just don't know what to do now and I just want to have my phone rooted and get CM6 on it. Any hellp would be greatly appreciated thank you.

It sounds like your system has 2.2 preloaded on it. If that is the case, unrEVOked3 will not work. Also, since the phone is not S-OFF, the other steps you are attempting will not work. You will need to do one of two things.
1. Find unrEVOked 3.2 to root 2.2.
2. Revert the phone to 2.1 and set S-OFF and then root the phone.

Oh and I forgot yeah its on 2.2 because its brand new just got it today. And the steps I was following on the CyanogenMod wiki were to downgrade my phone to 2.1 but thats where I was running into the problems listed below. And you can' get unrEVOked 3.2 until they release it again.
Just grab the latest unrevoked build from their IRC channel. You should be able to find the link easily and it should work to root your stock 2.2

hi, ive been trying to achieve root with unrevoked for the past 3 days, but i cant do it.. ive been able to (according to unrevoked 3.21) achieve root.
but in Hboot it says that i am not nand unlocked.... (i do have root to an extent because superuser is installed and busybox does say i have root although i cant install it)
so i also tried using unrevoked forever, but that gives me an error saying: unsupported system...
any details u need i will give you, please help..
stock desire, latest update.
thanks in advance
supa.
You won't necessaily have s-off, or nand unlocked, it depends on what phone you have for this to work using Unrevoked. There are other methods available if you wish to do this.
Have you actually tried installing an app that requires root access, like Setcpu or Titanium Backup, to see if it actually works?
I got an htc desire a month ago and got errors when I tried rooting with unrevoked. It turned out the hboot version was too recent (0.93) so I had to downgrade to 0.83 using this guide: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
It actually downgrades your phone to android 2.1 with Sense, but after that you can root your phone normally and then flash the Rom to any 2.2 Rom you want. It's a bit involved but the only way I could get root.
I wrote a quick guide for this before, which I'm reposting below. You can skip step 1 since it sounds like your phone is not branded.
Step 1:
Get an extra MicroSD card (2gig or whatever) and create a goldcard. You ONLY need this because if your phone is branded (eg. by a carrier... if any other names come up during boot, your phone is branded) and this is part of getting rid of that. If your phone is not branded, skip to step 2. Find out how here: android.modaco.com/content/general-discussion/305672/creating-a-goldcard/#entry1233023
Tip: you don't need an microSD card reader. You can format the microSD card in your phone by connecting your phone as a USB drive, and right-clicking the drive and formating. It MUST be FAT32 format, NOT FAT, so do it from the computer controls, not on the phone itself (because the phone itself does it in FAT format)
Step 2:
With your goldcard in your phone, you can now downgrade to Android 2.1. This kills two birds with one stone. A. It removes any branding from your phone and B. Lowers your hboot from higher versions to 0.83 which makes it possible to root your phone. Instructions here:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
Tip: if it fails the first time (as mine did) and it can't find the zip file at the end, make sure your goldcard was FAT32.
Now your phone will be running HTC Sense 2.1 unbranded. The next two steps will allow you to put any of the Froyo versions (with Sense or without, your choice) on your phone.
Step 3:
Root your phone with UnrEVOked. Instructions here:
rootmydroid.co.uk/guides/general/howto-root-your-htc-desire-wildfire-evo-incredible-with-unrevoked/
Tip: His instructions are great. His download pages are horrible, but they work eventually, just keep clicking.
Step 4:
Install any of the custom Android ROMs available. Instructions are also found on the above link for rooting the phone.
You can choose from any of the ROMs listed here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
I went with DeFroST, which is a nice Android ROM without Sense, since Android is better off on it's own, IMO.
Tip: If you don't have an MicroSD card reader, make sure you put the ROM's zip file on your MicroSD before you wipe your phone (Pt. 3, point 4 in the guide).
wow thanks for that..
my phone is rooted, i just want s-off.. but i have read that unrevoked doesnt work for gsm phones, which is what i have..
so i tried alpharev, which seems to be working for most people, but when i tried it using virtualbox, it tells me that i have a cdma phone, and to go back when i know what im doing or something like that..
