I'm using Handcent messenger which works well, however I've noticed in my task manager not only does Handcent run but so does the stock SMS/MMS program. Is Handcent simply a shell on top of the stock program? Can I disable or remove the stock program to save the 13 megs it says it's consuming? I'd be open to rooting though I'd prefer to wait till official Froyo.

Is there a way to install only Sense Messaging in a No-Sense Rom?
I would love to install CM's RC2 but I really enjoy the Sense Messaging app (particularly it's ability to rename MMS on the fly if a file by the same name exists).
stock msg app is practically the same thing. also there are numerous other messaging apps such as handcent and chompsms you can try.
if all you're worried about is the app overwrite a previous picture, stop. you know all your incoming mms are saved to your picturemail website = http://pictures.sprintpcs.com - right?
I'm not worried about it overwriting, I want it to rename the second pic a different name on it's own. With the stock app, whenever i saved an MMS, if I already had a pic by the same name, I would have to go into a file explorer and rename it before the stock app would save it.
The sense messaging renames it on its own.
then try handcent or chompsms. most everyone uses handcent.
I would only use handcent messaging, so can i remove the built in messaging app?
It annoys me that it shows on sharing lists. (plus it's running all the time)
I don't recommend deleting it. I've read before that removing it breaks MMS capabilities... Not sure about text messages.
I'd recommend you back up the APK file before deleting just in case.

No.

Get a grip. If you remove it, messaging will stop working because the service that makes it work is part of it. Handcent is a GUI interface to the message store, it is not the messaging service.
I hate the stock messaging app. I don't really like Handcent, except that it has the "Iphone" look and makes text conversations go side to side. Is it difficult to drop another messaging app in as the stock messaging app? I would love to see more ROMs(mostly Ava because that is what I generally run) use another messaging app. Thanks for your time.

No its not hard. Thats why the rom devs don't do it. It lets everyone go choose what app they would like. Also some of the sms apps require the original messaging to still be installed... which makes it harder.
I would try go sms. LOTS of themes, and options.

I did not know that some messaging apps require the stock messaging app. I would think that when you have to programs doing the same thing, the phone is not being as efficient as possible. How can someone replace the stock messaging app with a new one? I don't want to use an app in conjunction with another app and disable the original, I want to get rid of the original.
Two ways....
Either break open the rom and delete out the apps you don't want before flashing. Or, install app you want then go in and delete (not disable) the original app using appropriate file manager program.
What app do you recommend?
Go Sms Pro
GO SMS Pro: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.jb.gosms&feature=search_result
SMS backup/restore built in!
Installed it now (GO SMS PRO) and follow the instructions to disable the standard sms app but I still get sms / mms in both apps.
How do you solve it?
disable notifications manually in standard app should be enough. try reboot.

got the same problem.. thanks for that.
Actually never tried go sms, will do, but handcent sms works like a charm too, especially when you're writing with greek characters and want 160 characters per sms and no 70...
Sent from my HTC Desire
Handcent SMS
I used Handcent for a long time and it's very good and has the best feature: quick reply window.
another vote for handcent here
i had both handcent and go sms installed, at the same time for a couple of weeks, to get a good comparison...
go sms is good, but i like handcent better!
i still havenĀ“t tried chomp sms though...
+ 1 for Handcent
You could 'freeze' the default messaging app using Titanium.
i also used both. both have cool features. not so much difference between them but i prefer handcent.
I think that the stock messaging app on the Samsung Galaxy S I9000 is paintfully ugly.
I Think that Handcent SMS is better by far. But when i install Handcent i receive my sms from both apps (stock and Handcent).
Is it possible to stop the stock app from recieving my sms?
english is not my native language, so is not very good, sorry!
Thank you!
Open the stock messages app, and disable notifications in the settings menu. This will stop you from getting double notifications.
