My phone is draining quite quickly. Lost 30% in 2 hours without doing anything. Also, it gets pretty warm and the data arrows are constantly active. So there must be an app that's using bandwidth and draining my battery.
Is there an app in the market that shows which apps use the bandwidth?
Reboot doesn't help and I don't have any refreshing webpages open so it's a big mystery for me which app causes this drain...
No need for an app. Just press *#*#4636#*#*
Yes it sounds like you have a dodgy app. Two main culprits are the engadget widget, and having igoogle as your home page.
To find our what's doing it, either install the 'spare parts' app from the market, or (simpler) go to your dialer and key in *#*#info#*#*
This will access the hidden menu that the spare parts app gets you into. In here, select 'battery history' and you can select from a drop-down different parts of your phone that use barry power. Select ' network usage' and 'partial wake usage'. I believe this will highlight the culprit for you.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, I see a lot of network traffic being used by "1013". Does anyone know what that is? Clicking it crash the info-app.
The calendar app is 1011 which is the main culprit on mine. It's not the calendar widget is it? Try force closing the calendar app and widget and reboot.

From doing a bit of digging, it looks like this 1013 is a "mediaserver" process, (Whatever that means) and that no one seems certain exactly what it is. But it does seem that people are seeing it stop when they remove Weatherbug and/or the youtube widget. Do you have either of these installed?
Open up the Android Marketplace and select 'downloads'. This will show you your installed apps in the order you installed them. The most recent at the top. Start removing the most recent apps one by one until you see the 1013 process stop.
If you manage to put your finger on the culprit, you can help lots of people out here. Check out the threads on this forum under "Network usage by 1013".
After all is there any application which could show data traffic in Kb per application?
I too have found a mysterious app/process using the majority of my data called "0" clicking it force closes the app.
Anyone else have this?

Additionally to "0" i also have the processes "1014" and "1010" listed under *#*#4636#*#*. Anybody out there who knows what they exactly do as they consume quite a bit of my data-amount?
Anybody? No Dev around here who knows every process personally and by name ?
Netcounter.
Free and awesome. Find it in the market, more info here: http://www.jaqpot.net/netcounter/
I had the same issue, Solved it by deinstalling the k9-mail app, which was causing the 1013 flooding.

heya,
st0kes: Hmm, yes, but from what I can tell, NetCounter only tells you total data traffic, whereas what we're talking about here is traffic per app
For me, the data traffic arrows starting being lit up near constantly this morning, even though I wasn't doing anything active, as such. I also noticed the data usage counter in my Credit Usage app going up steadily. Bit worrying.
On my, it's showing an app "1010" as using a lot of traffic - anybody have any idea what that is?
Is it actually feasible to make an app that logs network traffic by app? Is something like that possible via the SDK?
Cheers,
Victor
You can see the data usage by app by using 'Network TrafficStats'

Hey all,
Before my great Desire I owned a touch HD, with the same data plan: 3gb/month.
With that device I managed a maximum of about 3-400 MB/month, but averagely it was only 100-150. The things I used on it: Twitter update every 15 mins, fb every hour, e-mail every hour, weather hourly, some - quite a lot - browsing with opera, and some youtube in pub while drinking&sharing =)
With the desire, i realized that it's really much moore It's 19th, and i just passed 1gig, with quite the same use, only the gmail is push now.
So my question is: what background app can use so much data - or is it average with this phone - , or can you recommend me a data counter app that shows consumption app by app so i could check it very easily.
The main purpose of it is I want to change my cell rate to a better one, but it 'only' has 1gig of data.
Thx for your help
Cheers
it will be youtube, a few mins of youtube and you can easily early up nearly 100mb if the video is in HQ
3G Watchdog is very good for monitoring data usage. You can set custom alarms to warn you if you area approach your limit.
To find exactly WHAT is using your network though, in your dialer enter *#*#4636#*#*
This gains you access to a hidden menu. Select 'battery history' then from the top drop-down menu, select 'network usage'. This will show you exactly what has been chewing through your megs!

Thank you very much, this code is awesome =)
I use watchdog, but it doesn't count the usage app by app, this is perfect.
The item named "internet" is the most, so it can be browsing or youtube.
Glad to be of help!
If your 'internet' is using that much though (when you only used a fraction on your Touch HD doing the same things), I'd say there is something up. I've TRIED to pass my monthly limit but can't get close.
One thing that can cause your 'internet' browser to use a lot of data all the time, is having iGoogle as your home page. All the widgets you can put on your i-Google home page constantly update and keep your data connection active.
If you do not have i-Google, is there a page you are leaving it on that could also require constant updating? Sites with lots of cycling flash advertisment banners could do this.
I do not use task killers, as I have found they cause more problems than they solve, but try force-stopping the 'internet' app. Without having a task killer, go to Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, select the 'internet' app and press the 'Force Stop' button.
Try this for a day after each use of the internet (a hassle I know) and if it seems to help, perhaps putting on a basic task killer and only have it 'auto-kill' your internet app could save you some unwanted data bills!

It's not igoogle, but i figured out that i use eredmenyek.com what is the hungarian version of livescores.com (i am betting a lot ) and if i let my browser on that site, it can be able to communicate a lot - updates every minute, all the events
Thx again, i'll try to set google.hu when i finish browsing, it's sure that it won't communicate a bit then
I noticed this with dk28 where my snsservice would keep saying restarting after about an hour when my phone is booted and doesn't have a running time. I don't know if this is causing some issues because the phone then say that I can't edit my contacts.

I gather you are referring to Facebook SNS? This started after Facebook made changes to their application and introduced their own sync process. Those changes did something that conflicts with Google's integration with Facebook.
Google and Facebook are going at it over the sync process within Android.
Source
There is another thread a few pages back in this sub forum that discusses possible work arounds. Nothing confirmed to resolve the constant prompts as of yet.
I'm having this issue too, I don't use Facebook and I can't find anything on any of the forums about this issue. No problems other than SNSSERVICE RESTARTING... continuously in running services. I push to stop it and it goes away, but I haven't noticed any other problems, even after I close it. I do notice that my battery lasts longer when I kill it. What EXACTLY does SNSService do? I've heard several different comments that it is for Facebook, its for Security (? if so, what security?), etc... and what would be causing it to go into restart. I do toggle off 3G from Power Control Plus (and GPS and Auto Sync) when I'm at work or other times when I have 1 or 2 signal bars (to save battery), but when I've had this happen, I try reconnecting all those, and it does not save the snsservice from going into a restart loop.

I have the EXACT same problem, on EB13 Syndicate ROM.
One thing I know for sure is snsservice fetches email syncs at the selected intervals for the stock email app, because I haven't been getting any emails since the problem started. My girlfriend has the Samsung Fascinate (sister phone) and she has the EXACT same problem. Anyone else know?
I found a fix for this...I'll bet if you have this problem you don't have a Facebook nor Twitter account and thus, have removed the "Feeds & Updates" widget from your screens. If you DON'T force close the SNSService, but just put the Feeds & Updates Widget back on an unused screen somewhere it will immediately stop the snsservice from restarting. I've then deleted the widget from my screen and was good for about 2 weeks, then it started doing it again (after the facebook app got an update) so I just left the widget up now.

That's more of a workaround, rather than a fix.

I don't know, for sure it doesn't help it. It would be nice if somebody shed some light on this bug.
My fix is to just delete the two SNS apk's, and use the respective apps built in sync feature.

what are the 2 apks? are they safe to delete even if I'm using fb (Facebook)? I've notice that when snsservice is restarting and if I kill it, it will stop notifications on fb.

Excuse me...you are right, it's a workaround, like the airplane toggle and the upside down compass calibrate, but hey I hope folks can use it until it does get fixed, which, I think people with the issue would appreciate knowing.

To remove the stock, built in SNS features, you can remove the following files:
Snsaccount.apk
Snsproviders.apk
About affecting the fb app, I'm not sure. I just started using the fb app so I can't say with certainty. I am going to test and see if deleting either or both apk files stop notifications in the fb app. Based on what you said, sounds like it might.

I'm pretty sure you NEED those apks if you ARE using Facebook. You just need to put the Feeds and Updates Widget back on one of your unused screens.
No, if you're using the Facebook app that you download from the market, you don't need either of those apks.
Just tested notification functionality like I mentioned in my last post, and I am getting them all. Those apks are deleted on my phone.
You'd need to keep those apks if you want the Twitter and Facebook functionality that comes built in on a stock phone.

Does deleting those two apks not affect Latitude updates? I know their separate services but it seems as if Latitude doesn't automatically update correctly when I remove either snsservice or drmprovider.

Hi. My girlfriend`s stock desire eats battery as hell from time to time. I managed to find the culprit- it`s facebook keeping wakelock. Do others experience this? BTW we are exiting facebok app not by pressing home button, but by pressing back. And this issue doesn`t happen always. How to prevent this? Maybe some autokiller may help? What do u guys think?
All facebook sync in settings is turned off
wierd i guess
how about in-app settings in facebook? try switching sync off there too
You said, this issue does not happen always. Can you reproduce this problem yourself? Do you do special things when this issue happens?

No special things when this issue occurs. I just launch facebook look at main feed list then hit back twice (first for go back to main screen with facebook icons and second to exit application).
Look up, which applications and/or services are running in background. Updated facebook on newest version?
Is wifi/3g always on? Wifi and mobile network are real battery killers.

Its on mobile network. But *#*#4636#*#* -> battery history partial wakelock shows facebook active all the time. So i doubt it`s a network fault.
Kill facebook by yourself:

If problem not solved, see what happens when you uninstall facebook completely

Hello everyone,
Since the beggining of this week, I'm experiencing a weird and suspicious event.
My wifi icon shows up like if I was downloading something 24/7 (please see the attached picture)
Seems like some app keeps using my wifi to send/receive data (could be a trojan ?).
I want to know your thoughts about this knowing that I rebooted both my phone and rooter several times already.
Thanks.
Hey dude,
That's normal. Most times bloatware is running as a back process on the phone. It also depends which apps you've got. Like news apps or if your Facebook or Twitter is active. Don't worry about it, I would say.

If you are worried about Trojans do a search on Play for one of the free security software. A good one will scan and show you suspicious apps you need to evaluate and possibly remove. Good luck
Best way to find out is root and use Android Firewall. It is free and useful. You can block and just check logs to see what is sending traffic.. and where.
Thanks for the answers guys
It does look like some heavy working app because It takes ages before a normal website loads.
@Beowulf_pt : that's exactly what I'm looking for, cheers !
You really need to look at what you have runing in the background and decide if you want all of it turned on. There is a lot of things that are on by default that you may not need like auto updates for apps. They will be checking to see if there is an update and use your bandwidth even if there is no update available.

It could be google instant upload / picasa (check your Google Account sync settings) or Dropbox Camera Upload (check dropbox app settings).if you have those enabled that could be the cause. I'd guess they're the most likely culprits in this case.
Forgive me if this is a simplistic question, but I can't figure out what's going on with my phone.
I have an app that tracks my data usage and gives me a breakdown of which apps are using the most data. Recently, an app called MyFlare has appeared on the list and it's using quite a bit of data. I went to uninstall it, though....and I can't find it. It's not in the general apps list, it's not in the application settings menu under "all apps" and I can't even find it if I do a file search on "MyFlare." This has me really concerned that I inadvertently downloaded something harmful. I've run several scans through Lookout and that has not turned up anything malicious, but I'm still worried.
I think Cox communications has an app called MyFlare that's some kind of photo backup or something. I use Cox for my internet and may have downloaded the app when I first signed up with them, but it's not on my phone anymore.
Could someone help me figure out if I downloaded something malicious and how to remove it quickly?
Can you post a screenshot of this issue
That would be greatly appreciated
Sorry for the delay, here are the screenshots.
In the first, you can see that myflare is using quite a bit of data:
But in the second picture, that app doesn't appear in my apps list....
(I'm posting from my phone and it said that the pictures uploaded, but if somehow they didn't, I'll re-upload when I get back to my computer)
