I find the phone to be quite slippy without any coverings. I don't really want to add a skin or jell case, they will make the phone too thick. I tried fully body screen protectors on my G1 but found they did not last on the body, the edges peeled after a few months on any curved surfaces.
I wondering if anyone made a softtouch back casing, that could replace the one (two) that came with the phone, just something with some grip so the phone does not slip out of your hands so easily...
Other options which could make it even better... it had a think layer of jell for a bit of impact protection... if the side edges extended to cover the metal band on the front, so that it could provide a little screen impact protection too. I maybe asking for a lot, sort of an all in one but it seems like a feasible product.
Everyone is waiting for new backcovers. Samsung will likely make them available, and surely the aftermarket, too. But none are out there, yet.

I think it would be cool if they made some metal ones
this is number 1 on my list (rubberized backing)......phone is extremely slippery. number 2 would be anti-glare screen protector, and for 3 i would get a holster from Seidio
If you don't mind sacrificing one of the covers that came with the phone, you could spray it with Plasti-Dip...a readily available rubberized paint. Soft Feel paint from Alsa would probably be much better, but that stuff is only available commercially. If I try the Plasti-Dip, i'll post how it turns out.

that might be worthwhile since I don't like the purple backcover anyway. Now if i can remember where i put it....
I don't know if you guys noticed but any crunching sound is coming from the battery cover and not the chrome trim. I noticed that on a demo model
I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE an aluminum cover, with plastic cutouts overe the antennas for celluar/WIFI/BT/GPS.
I'd settle for Matte too.

i was thinking same thing - if you do it first, abrade (sand) the surface fairly rough so it gets a good bite to the surface - just a suggestion
Or just get some 3m di-noc vinyl carbon fiber film. Did it to my EVO back before taking it back. Looks great and has a texture to it. Got the idea from the EVO section here:

That looks pretty nice! The bump is probably hard to do though =/ and wish they had different colors

and for the plasti-dip.. please do post pics when u r done!
this plasti-dip stuff is very nice and looks like from factory. i put 3 coats already. cant comment on durability. ps. i light sanded the cover before just in case.
if this stuff hold well, i am planning on doing the same to my other cover.
Picture taken with Nexus
before doing the second one, you might try checking your signal strength (iirc #*#*4636*#*# ) to see if you're experiencing signal loss with the plasti-dip'd cover
if you don't see any signal loss, an idea for you on the 2nd one - take whatever amount of pasti-dip you'll think it will take, and mix in some media to give it some body or thickness as well as texture - maybe some short 1/4 - 1/2" fiberglass strands, ground up walnut media, ground glass or even sand) - just mix in and stir before painting it on
if you do go that route, might try a little bit first and paint onto something else (something plastic or metal that won't absorb any of the material like wood would) just to see what texture it gives you on the surface as well as what kind of build up it gives

I doubt rubber paint will effect signal. The grip and feel just like other rubberized things. Looks like from factory and was super easy to do. 3 coats with 20 minut intervals and 1 hour to dry, instructions say let dry for 4 hours. Sand with 600-800 sand paper. why 3 coats, well just in case....
ps any one know how to remove the chrome trim ? i wanna paint that too. when all this glossy plastics get oily, i hate the feeling it creates.
Kolyan,
looks great. thanks for trying this and posting pics.
What did you use to apply it? Did you paint or spray it on?

Since the vibrant comes with two different battery covers, where are all the third party ones? Are battery covers, especially with the vibrant/galaxy s chin on the bottom, hard to make? I was hoping to get a nice rubbery one like how the battery cover of the garminfone has.
Not yet OP. But there might be in the future.
The phone was only released 20 some days ago. It takes a some time for third party accessories to get made, but with the popularity of the galaxy s phones I'm sure some will be made.

You have no idea how much I've been hoping for and searching for this exact thing. I would love a back such as this not only for a slightly heavier phone but it just feels less cheap and easy to break and feels more, I don't know, sturdy in the hand. Less slippery too than plastic.
Google is your friend!
Closest to metal back plate i have found is here...
It doesn't say if any of those backs are aluminum/metal. I assume they are all just the same plastic crap that comes with the phone -- if so, not interested!
I have that case from daydeal and the back is metal but doesn't add to much weight to it. And it scratches kinda easy so just be careful. But overall im happy with it.

is it a case or a back cover only?
It's somewhat a case, very similar to the casemate barely there case.
I also have the aluminum case. It's pretty nice, and I didn't see a drop in GPS reception with it - but my GPS is terrible regardless. I like the cae, even if it isn't a back-plate.
I swap my cases around, so I'm using a simple clear/argyle TPU cover over a white back-plate right now.

Metal Cases
I have found two different cases available. One is all metal, the other is a mix of plastic and aluminum. Here are the links to eBay auctions.
All Metal Case
Aluminum and Plastic Case Available in Silver, Red, Black and Blue.
The Aluminum and Plastic case says I-9000, but also says it is for the Vibrant.
A simple eBay search of Vibrant Metal Case will pull up the same results I found.

There seems to be 2 types of materials, 3 finishes.
On mine, the clearish part is a slightly-bendable hard plastic with the texture of what all of my matte hard plastic. Think the type of plastic that is one most power adapters (that aren't shiny) but add a slightly bendable aspect to it.
The black part on the back is shiny, slick, smooth, and more flexible. It's similar to silicon cases (what I can assume you mean by soft gel/rubber) but I think it's still different. It seems to be less "floppy" even though it is very bendable. The shiny black part seems to "stick" to certain surfaces (such as my desk and other hard/flat surfaces) but not to some that you would expect (it doesn't stick to my pockets at all and glides just fine across my clothing, car seat, and non-leather furniture - it might stick to leather, I don't know). The black part on the front appears to be the same material as the black part on the back, but with a matte finish. The result of the different finish is that it doesn't have the "stickiness" on much of any surface, yet still gives your hand a slight bit of grip beyond what the stock TBolt gives you.
Overall, the "feel in hand" is comfortable and it gives you extra grip but doesn't feel sticky or anything like that. Imagine going from a slick, hard-plastic phone to a phone with a rubberized body (like our TBolt has). Going from a naked TBolt to this case is kinda like taking that one step further. But in no way could I ever describe it as "feeling sticky" in my hand or pocket.

So it looks like/feels like it's not going to just fall apart or anything like that, if that's what you mean. I can't envision drops/dings or other daily use wearing it down.
The ONE concern that I have about it holding up is because it is made with two types of "plastic" (I don't know if it's plastic, silicon, rubber, or whatever, hence my quotes). I fear that if I take the case off and on a lot (for my car dock), that the joints of the two plastics might start to come apart. This is NOT based on any quality issues that I have seen so far, just a concern based on the fact that this wasn't produced in a single mold when it was melted down (this is coming from somebody with an engineering background).
I will be shocked, though, if I have a problem with this case in the next 6 months, and for $5, well, I'd say that's pretty damned good!

Read my post a couple posts up about the 2 different types of materials with 3 finishes. As best as I can tell, the inside is the same material as the outside. What this means is that 60% of it is the very flexible plastic while the clear part does cover ~40% of the back. I would expect the black part to offer more protection to a fall/bump than the clear part, and fortunately the black part covers most of the corners and edges. Still, I expect the clear part to offer more protection than a hard plastic case would.
Updated the OP with some photos. Perhaps they will help.
thanks for the detailed feedback!
This case will also fit into the Verizon holster/shell combo holster. You just can't use the VZW shell, but it'll slide into the holster. The fit is a little snug, but it works. I like to swap out this case with the VZW shell. This one provies more protection, but the VZW one is pretty cool too.
In case anybody was wondering, I got mine from this seller from China: http://goo.gl/62Fhx
It took something like 10 days to get to me, but I didn't mind since it cost less than a good burger.

I have the Thin Air case as well, along with the Glas, both are excellent products, thought a bit overpriced.
The Thin Air is a quality case, I am currently in Hong Kong, so I've tried on all the generic cases at the electronic malls as well. The cheap generic ones doesn't fit the best, there is always a creak or slight warp on the sides of the case that compresses as you squeeze the sides, which to me is annoying. The "better" branded ones are on par with the SGP, but the price is also similar to SGP, I rather buy from a well known brand.
I've had two cheap generic ones before I bought the case mate barely there and the SGP Thin Air, both cheap cases broke a few days after when I took the case on and off.
The Thin Air does leave finger prints, but I don't care too much since it is only the back, and it can be wiped away. The most important part for me is a super thin case with minimal protection that doesn't break easily. So far (fingers crossed), SGP has done it.

I agree, this case isn't for most people, since the normal person that wants a case would want more protection than what the Thin Air has to offer, plus like your video mentioned, there is no top and bottom coverage. But out of the cases I have, I like this the most, the black color blends in with the phone.
Thank you for the review videos, you are doing a great job, very clear voice, smooth presentation, no "umms" or "uhhs," or any tongue smacking. Keep it up! It is because of you that I bought the Glas, which I love!

I was really excited for this case due to it's look and how minimal it is, but after just 3 days I need to stop using it.
The stickers you place along the sides are constantly moving. They slide up and out of the case somehow, so you need to slide them back down, which leaves a trail of sticky residue.
Also, there is one spot on the back my phone just above the battery
cover that is now damaged due to the case rubbing against it. There are scratches and an area where the color has rubbed off.
My phone is in worse condition after a few days in this case than from a week without any case.

I did not, but it was bought directly through their site, not a 3rd party.
Don't get me wrong, the case is beautiful and the damaged area is a lot smaller than the damaged area would be if you were to drop it on concrete without this case. I just want to let others know that this happens as others could be even more OCD about their phone condition than I am. SGP knows the inside of this case scratches your phone, that's why they include the stickers. Unfortunately this one spot was missed, either due to oversight, or it is too small of a location to place a sticker.
I had the Captivate before this phone using a Body Glove case. While it is the best case I have ever used on a phone, it also scratched up the top and bottom of my phone pretty bad. It's a pretty common thing with the harder cases.

Nope, just personal emergencies that required me to be out of town for a week. I'll get some pics after work tonight.
I received my Ultra Thin Air Infinity White today and I have to say I'm quite disappointed.
The case doesn't fit that well. If I lay the phone on a table and press down on the left or right side the phone sinks deeper into the case. Without pressure the edges of the case are almost even with the screen's surface, it's only if I press down on the phone that the edges rise above the screen.
Is this a flawed specimen or are all the Ultra Thin Air cases like this?

No reflection on your review, I ordered the case before you published it.
It's a shame though, it looks good but I'm not sure I'll use it much.
Received my Trident Aegis case today. Went with the bright green (which I so far prefer to the darker green which they previously used, I had a Cyclops case in this color on my HTC Glacier.)
One gripe is, so far, the open space surrounding the camera on the back of the case. This is an odd decision. Not a big deal to me, though; but still worth mentioning.
The biggest gripe, though, is that the phone is not at all easy to actually get into the case. I'm not saying that it doesn't fit. The problem is that you first place the phone into the colored, gel surrounding piece. You then have to fit these piece (and its protruding buttons) into the very hard and rigid black/grey plastic piece. It's kind of hard to do this since the gel-covered buttons have to fit into the holes on the device, and I ended up hitting the power button over and over again, and botting into recovery because one of the volume rockers was held down.
My Cyclops case, for the Glacier, was designed in the opposite way. The phone first fit into two hard pieces (a front and back piece, basically), and then a black rubber surrounding piece went around the plastic itself. This was really easy to take the phone out of and place it back within.
I know people will ask...I'd say the phone doesn't add too much in the way of size to the already very large S-II, but the only comparison I have is the D30. I do not have the Incipio or Seideio cases to compare.
My aegis case for my vibrant was the same. Its how they all are in terms of getting it on. Waiting for mine to get for the sgs2

my main concern is how well it protects but a close second on how hard it is to get out of the pocket. if im going to spend to cash to get something that would work well i want it to be what i want. any opinions?
So overall how do you feel about the case?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I'd say pocket fitment is mostly contingent upon the pocket. I have been putting the SII + Trident case in the front pocket of shirts and it only sticks out a small bit. It fits in my jeans pockets, but I wear my jeans a bit baggy. It won't fit in the pockets of my dressier slacks. So, I find it easy to get out of most pockets. My Glacier + Trident was actually probably a bit more difficult due to the ribbed silicone surround. The case for the S II doesn't have much to snag on. Keep in mind though, that the Glacier + Case was a lot thicker, front screen to back battery cover, than the S II is. This definitely had something to do with it as well.
Overall I am pleased with the case. I like the color options, shape, and structural design of the case. While I did find the previous "Cyclops" style case that I had for my Glacier to be easier to take off and on, this new case seems, at least at first glance, to provide equal or better protection while also being easier to fit in pockets.
One footnote: I'm using this case along with a Zagg wet application invisible shield and I'm not having any issues with the corners peeling.
What did you pay? Looks sick.

does the screen protector look to be of good quality?
I also noticed that the plastic doesn't hold/secure the rubber on the bottom of the phone, is it easy for the bottom corners to come off say when you're putting it in or pulling it out of your pockets?
Thanks!

The screen protector does look cheap. I'm not using it so I didn't really pay much attention to it. The hard case does not wrap around the bottom, so it is just the gel casing. But I haven't had any issues with the case coming off when putting the phone in my pocket
I really wish otter would make a defender case for this phone! I loved it on my iPhone

I paid $22 with free shipping using the promo code holiday2011.
And yes, I got it from the tridenteer site.
i just ordered one... ill compare and take pictures comparing it to my incipio silicrylic case when i get the trident
I put the screen protector on. Used a wet install. Looks great so far. Smooth feel and very clear. It is dark outside right now, so I will report back tomorrow during the day. Looks really good in the house. Just a few air bubbles settling. I can tell they will go away though.
Screen protector is great. Really clear in light and dark. I'm sure there's better quality out there but for free its great. Also I have the green case. Get compliments like crazy about this case. Very high quality and looks pretty sick. Great protection. Great looks. Great case.
FYI the Incipio case has the slight gap around the camera as well.
The only issue I have seen, been using the case about a week, is the flap that covers the charging port doesn't want to stay closed. It doesn't hang down enough to cause problems really but isn't a tight fit and would def let dust in. Other than this small issue the case works great.
Just came across a review for the Khomo Back Cover
Interesting...

Maybe...
Maybe this is what I have been looking for. Now I just have to find somewhere that can ship it to Sweden for a reasonable price.
Any tips?
I would so buy this if that logo isnt there. lol
^Yeah. Logo ruins this.

One major flaw, it leaves the camera lens exposed so that it can be scratched every time you put your phone down. Would need a quick Sugru mod.
It looks like you could rub the logo off
i bought this on amazon for $6.99 its not bad. was kinda my last resort as i was looking for something to match my pebble blue but theres nothing out there that did so i went for utility. its definitely has more grip than OEM but not by much. its a soft touch type material. fits just like an oem though. more rigid too

it attracts more scratches(superficial can be wiped away) than dust
Got my back in... Love it, minus the damn khomo across the bottom, it's perfect for me

Manufacturers need to make more of an effort if they insist on stamping their logos on the back of their parts? Especially when the logo looks like it was designed in about 3 minutes by a 12 year old....
O.P! Check out my camera mod! Hope this can be useful with your rubberized cover.

Got the same battery cover myself. It doesn't provide more grip in all situations, but definitely provides more "feel" and less slippery than the original one as it's not gloss. What I mean by all situations is that most of the time I don't have a problem gripping the original gloss back, but it definitely becomes harder to grip (slippery) when my hands are too dry or have a little dust/dirt on them.
Every review and picture I've seen of this case has it fitting perfectly and snuggly like the Samsung original battery cover. However, mine is a little bit off. Seems the tolerance on the tabs are just a bit off and won't fit completely on my S3. Some of the corners won't 'snap' to latch and there's a noticeable gap along the edge. Doesn't feel like it will fall off but you can see it. I ordered through Amazon and will be returning this one to them. I did order the exact same case again from Amazon to see if the tolerance on that one is any better. If it fits well, I am definitely keeping it.
The case makes the phone feel more solid. There is no give/bending/etc on it at all when pressing along the back. Again the biggest complaint is the company logo. I've remedied this somewhat by darkening the logo with some flat black paint. I used a paint pen so it was pretty simple to do without it bleeding onto the rubberized part. You could probably do the same with a Sharpie to make the logo stand out less.
Would be really sweet to get my hands on 2 covers. Any tips on how to buy them or getting them transported to sweden?
Many thanks!
looks good
