Porting "Genius Button" to other devices - myTouch 3G Slide Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there anyone working on porting the "Genius Button" feature to any other Android devices. I am really interested in using it on a Samsung Vibrant.

Its sucks dont waste your time. By the time it loads so that you can use it, you could have already just did what you needed to without it.

[GUIDE] Beginner's Guide For The HTC One X

Hi.
This is the guide I made for the Desire S forum to help newcomers to Android and HTC. It turned out to be quite popular and helpful, so I have given it a tweak for the One X and put it here for your benefit. It’s in .pdf format so you can download it and read it on your phone at your leisure.
Again this is only for people coming from Nokia, iPhone, Blackberry etc. I’m pretty certain that this device is going to tempt a lot of people away from them. If you’ve owned an Android before this will all be known to you.
Hope it helps!
P.S. This dropbox link will expire every couple of months. If you have problems downloading, let me know. I’ll get the link refreshed ASAP.
Link updated 9th May
Download link: http://db.tt/K7U6Z76L
Updated link so it should work again. Let me know if it stops and i'll refresh it.
Think I posted it too soon for most people to find. This is a VERY busy forum.
Happy to help.
I probably fall under the list of people who do not need to follow this guide. But alone the fact that one of the first things i read was not to install a task killer goes to prove that this is well worth a read for 'noobs'.
Hahaha! That was one of the first mistakes i actually made on my android phone, i installed a task killer.
Oh! Gotya Facetrap, i'm so installing that.

If it's even a little bit helpful then I'm happy!
I simply adjusted it from the Desire S guide I did.
I would like to have people post their new-comer stumbles and discoveries here. God knows I went through enough myself. Two years ago I thought an apk was an assault rifle!
If they are worth the addition then I'll periodically update this guide to include them (giving credit to the sources of course) and it should grow into quite a useful starting point from people finally putting their iPhone down.
It'll help me improve and evolve this beginners guide to help other newcomers from tripping on the same hurdles as us. We all started somewhere!
Note: This is not meant to include stuff on rooting, unlocking, flashing etc. This is already covered in sufficient detail here on XDA. This is just about getting started.
To be honest, i really enjoyed this guide.
It's actually really helpful. Love some of the Apps you've listed, much better than the "top 50 android apps" i've encountered using google search.
The power management part was also of help. Didn't know of the "*#*#4636#*#* part.
Thanks!
Great guide, however, the wifi sleep policy advice can be confusing. Your guide says to set wifi sleep to "never". However, the option on screen refers to staying awake, not sleeping. Users should actually select "always"
Easy to work out but it may confuse noobs.
nice!!
thanks for the work and share!!
Handy guide, soo is tasker your app? Cmon you have to be some sort of benefitery
I actually heard about Tasker from an AT&T rep when I went in to change my plan. Awesome app, and this guide helped me learn about the loveliness that is exit task. I actually made a separate profile to undo what my work profile did. Good to know I can just make an exit task . I learned something today, woot! Once my battery test is done, i'll mess with it a bit more. Running the test because I am curious, battery runs fine for me so... 10min in, only 3% down.

That's how it used to be worded on older android phones, which of course caught me out when I switched to the HOX.

Yeah some Roms have features that take over from Tasker. Sense 3.5 had that power management for battery low. It's gone in sense 4 (apart from that hidden menu but no one knows when it kicks in) so Tasker resumed that roll. It's just handy for filling the gaps in a Roms functionality, if like me, you can't write a line of code to save your life! Things like gps off when exiting navigation, and underclocking when using navigation AND charging (which makes my phone run VERY hot).

S Voice? Well, it depends

Hey guys...
Just heard about S Voice. It sounds even better than siri. So I gave it a try on our device with CM9 alpha2.
So here it is:
The major function is OK, concerning listening and giving answers. Mount Everest's height can be found, weather OK, and even silly questions.
But the problem is here...
First, it is not quite responsive. Sometimes the button does not respond. However it can be worked around by re-launching it.
Second, the integration with local data does not work. Whenever I tell it to create a new task and/or calendar event, it crashes.
Third, it is not customizable. When you try to change the wake up phrase, it crashes. Worse still, you have to clear the data of the app to revive it.
Na.
Well, just asking if any developer is interested in making it work in our device?

[ROM] Jelly Bean Gnex Port Alpha [6/30/12][v0] Discontinued

ANDROID MAISTER'S
PRESENTS
Jelly Bean Gnex Port
The Andromadus Team is working on Jb from source, best posible way to expirience jellybean as it should be, follow there progress/releases here

Here it is guys jb for our beloved g2, this rom is based on the gnex jellybean leak that we saw couple days ago, right now rom is as useless as the word could posibly describe it, the rom boots just fine, but it seems the launcher does not like being render in software mode so it crashes non stop, i tried other launcher they dotn seem to work ether, im just posting this so maybe someone else can help me, to ether get launcher working in software mode or getting egl acceleration working, for this will we mostlikely need a 3.0 kernel.
Again bare in mind this is pretty much useless, and its not much fun to use, untill we solv the launcher issue, dont expect this to be a daily driver any time soon
Working:
Touchscreen forgot to mention this
It renders and reaches lockscreen thats about it, im sure i can fix more, but theres no point if we cant get the launcher working.
Not working
mostly evrything

I want to say that aside from the fact that it's on the DZ (which is a phone I own and use), the best thing about this thread are the advertisements on the bottom of the uploadhouse.com website.

The thread proves that, unlike what a lot of people who knows little to nothing about programming say, JB can be ported to the G2 and it can boot.
First thing first. Stuffs come later.
@siulmagic: awesome at least it boots!
@siulmagic dont sell yourself short! It takes a lot to get something like this to boot! I am sure after a while someone will get something else to work. Like taz , he is a great porter!
lol i did not see those ads on the website, will upload somewere else, my bad haha.
I knew it was only a matter of time, n they said this wasn't possible? Sure there's issues and bugs but its still in the alpha stage.

I said "ASIDE FROM THE FACT". you misinterpreted.
I would have thought JB would have taken another year for anything to be on Desire Z.
I'm just learning these past 3 years and by no means unfamiliar with personal ports from other devices but took a look at doing something similar for my device for personal use and was humbled very quickly. It's the accomplishing of seemingly impossible tasks large well funded corporations don't bother tackling by one user who solves it on their free time that make me truly love open technology. Kudos. Keep it Up. Many Thanks!

[Q] Root issue

I installed eclipse 4.1.1, it has superuser in it. Tibu works, but when I try to use trickster mod, it says I don't have root access. I used root checker, and sure enough it says I don't have root access on my phone. What's going on with that? What can I do?
I'm not sure of the technicalities causing your issues.
But I can recommend flashing SuperSU in ClockworkMod after installing TricksterMod. Also make a backup beforehand.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Just tried that, didn't work. I don't understand how I don't have root access but one app that required it works and another doesn't.
tried to re-root the phone using the nexus toolkit, no go either. tibu still works but not trickster.
dont use a toolkit. srsly, since you dont know what the hell you're doing.

Try updating the su binaries from super su app... That's worked for me before. If that doesn't work try flashing an updated rom since they all have su built in.

Thank warner. I don't know why some people think if you own a certain phone you should know right away how to do everything the "right" way. If you shouldn't use the toolkit, then take it off the forum. Otherwise people are going to use it like me.

just because you find a tool on the table doesn't mean you should take an engine apart without any knowledge before hand.
Some things to search before rooting:
1. What does "root" mean and what does it change?
2. Why do I 'need' root?
3. Differences between soft and hard bricks and how to recover from them.
4. What is and how to use ADB.
5. an extra but, if you were to make this phone unrecoverable or unusable for a degree of time, is this a possibility you can accept? (i ask this because ive worked with those that brick their phone they use for work and then they rush through trying to fix it and make it worse).
We aren't trying to be mean or chase away new users, it's always a great thing when people learn to use their phones. The only thing that can cause bitterness is when users buy a phone and come home and root it because they heard thats what you do with android phones and how to get cool stuff or free apps. Im not saying that is you, likely it isn't from what i've read.
Bottom line, read and learn as much as you can because there is no such thing as too much knowledge. There is nothing more satisfying than figuring out the problem yourself and fixing it instead of 'calling tech support for help' on xda.
I do understand what you're saying. I'm not trying to come off as cocky or I know it all but I have been doing these things with android for a while and do understand how some things work and how to do them. This whole unlocked phone is new to me, and I've never been completely comfortable or able to use fast boot methods which I know is the right way to do most things. I try to learn things about these phones on a daily basis which is why I ask questions and try new things all the time. I appreciate what you have said and am trying to learn how to do things properly, this is just new to me and I appreciate people who have patience to help people like me out.

I do agree that learning as much as we can and being able to fix a problem ourselves without asking for help is extremely satisfying. At the same time though this is the q&a forum and he did try to fix the problem himself through the use of a toolkit, which I agree cuts out a lot of the learning that can be achieved through using fastboot and adb. I think in this forum especially it is better to try to help and make constructive comments than to be rude and post a reply that doesn't help and could possibly chase off a newcomer to modding their device. I appreciate your comment though trying to explain the benefits of learning yourself in a respectful way.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Exactly. I'm not asking anyone to come to my house and fix my phone. But it helps when someone explains what I'm doing wrong and how I can fix my errors in what I'm doing. Thanks for your help everyone who did but I'm going to move on and learn from this experience.
Yes it's a Q&A, but this is a question that asked a lot.
A little bit of reading tell you how to use the forum properly, and you probably find the answer already solved.
Toolkits have there place & for newbies i guess it's the fastest way to get it done, but if you read through the Q's you will find most rooting issues are related to the use of toolkits. Great if they work, but as soon as there is an issue, users are left in the situation you are in now.
efrant & jubakuba have guides in the Q&A section on unlocking, rooting and installing roms with the use of fastboot/adb, all the commands are given.
Good luck
If root is not working as it should, just re-flash the superuser package again. See here.
It's likely an issue with out-dated files or with permissions.
if you use a toolkit, you're on your own - since neither you or us know what happened. it's your fault, for rushing things.
google won't help you either. that's why we say things like that.
Ok, got it. Thanks. Bye.

Not enough to Root

I just got the LG G3 and love it. The phone is awesome, but theres just not enough reason for me to root at the moment. I know its new but I'll wait for more roms and other features to come out. I would like more themes. I really don't want to DL a launcher. I used Themer but apparently it gives me some kind of not compatible because of the resolution, something like.
I thought the same thing, but ended up rooting my G3 anyway.
Small tweaks using G3 tweakbox were worth it, such as removing carrier IQ on lockscreen, adding dedicated menu buttons on the nav bar,
showing ram availability in recent apps menu, etc.

to each their own but I have never owned a phone and not take root. Just being able to freeze/uninstall unwanted apps, freezing updates and doing minor tweaks is enough reason besides loading custom recoveries and roms.
Takes time so I don't understand why even make the thread?
I root it solely for fixing memory card problem.

This. I will say that I was happy without root until the microlag got to me. The force close of my google services was the last straw. I now have no lag on my device and have made it much better imo with the tweaks mentioned earlier in this thread. I really wish we had an AOSP rom for it though.
SD card issue, g3 tweakbox, viper4android, xposed.
That hsould be enough for you to root

G3 tweakbox is awesome app, I did the paid version.... (also needs xposed framework to run), I guess i need to research whats goin on with SD card...I assume to be the ext-sd card. Not sure about viper4andriod....I D/L'd and asked about updating drivers and choices were not very intuitive. I'm happy to a have TWRP and TiBu up and running as well.
having a choice of root or not....really is a no-brainer if you want to do any thing to your smart phone, otherwise why have it?
There's a thread for everything, so I figure I make one to see if there are others on the same boat. Yes, I would love to root my phone but I'm going to wait for a bit. I would love to see more developers working on more roms to get that "wow" effect. I've always root as soon as I get a phone but I usually get a phone thats been out for a while and to see tons of roms. This is my first phone that I ever had thats only been released in only a week. So I'm excited to see what comes out from these developers.
I personally like to root right away for the simple fact if I screw up I'm still within the 14 day return policy

I also feel like there is no real need to root. For me, anyway. I rooted my s4 asap but for this one I finally feel like I don't have to root to enjoy it. Frankly I'm just not as interested in flashing **** like I used to.

Rooting and freezing a lot of apps made my phone noticeably faster and last longer on a charge. So it's definitely worth it.
