internet on evo doesnt work a lot - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

it goes on and off
is it just sprints service or my phone?
its rooted but the same problem was happening before it was rooted

Sometimes it gets stuck. Mine does that all the time. Just gotta keep trying till it boosts. Hell, I'd say my cable internet at home is less reliable than my Sprint data though.

CDMA GNex Signal Issues

I just got my VZW Galaxy Nexus this last week and I've been experiencing signal issues. Often when check my phone, it will have no signal at all which can take some time to come on, and then its sometimes even longer before I get a data connection of any kind. I am in Lincoln, NE so I have 4G here which works great when it works. Is this a common problem with these phones? I rooted and installed CM9 that day I got it so I want to determine if I have bad hardware that needs to be exchanged or bad software that can be fixed. I found the 4.03 leaked radio on the boards here and flashed it, which has seemed to help some but I still have issues. What is everyone's experience with VZW and the GNex?
Common problem seems to be the complaint of a longer "connect to network" time, both on startup of the phone and if data is lost or switched down from 4G to 3G
The consensus seems to be that its a s/w issue that can be corrected.
Oddly enough, I was standing in the middle of our local shopping mall with no bars, yet did a Google search for "Verizon Wireless" (go figure, right?) and it came right up....no it wasnt cached. Just shows that our bar readings may be inaccurate, so who knows what else might be inaccurate. I also had my phone right next to a demo GNex at the Verizon store, and the demo was showing 2 or 3 bars of 3G, while mine had 1 bar of 4G......so which is better, 1 bar of 4G or 3 bars of 3G? Judging from app download speeds, Id rather have 1 bar of 4G anyday.
I have seen some comments about the bars in the status being in accurate, however when mine has no bars it seems to be that way. I am unable to use the internet, text or call which is an issue for me.
I also should note that I use JuiceDefender to control my data connection. While this should have no bearing on my phone/text connection, I am wondering if it may have some affect on the 4G connection even after I have the screen on for a bit.
I have 4g disabled and haven't had any issues. I'd try disabling it, restart and see if it happens again. Make sure its still disabled after restart.
I've been having big time issues with mine. Lots of time I go to pick up my phone and it has service, decent service, but won't connect to data. Once I'm connected it is not an issue but if I'm on wifi at home, and turn it off, it just doesn't want to connect unless I reboot.
Rooted and tried a new radio. A little better but still has been doing some weird things.

How long have you had yours? My biggest question that I'm trying to answer right now is if I have subpar hardware. Since the phone is only a week old I know I could return it to stock and easily get VZW to give me a new one. This may not be the case two months from now however.

I've had it since it's been released. The newer leaked radio is better, but it also does weird things too. I don't know if this is because I'm in a 4G town or what.
I don't get 4G where I live, but my buddies with a Bionic and Rezound do here at my house, albeit it's very sketchy for them.
Thing is, I'll have good 3G signal if I'm driving, but for some reason (at least with the original radio) it wouldn't connect. Still testing.
So far the newer radio has been better, but hasn't fixed my issue.
at my house it sucks a few blocks down or anywhere else its rock solid so i just wifi at home better for battery anyway
I hit dead zones where i really shouldnt be. Downgraded from 4.03 to 4.02 and the jury is still out. Might be overall software issue like OP said.

Sorry to hear you're having the same problem, but I am glad to hear this sounds like a correctable software issue and not isolated bad hardware. Hopefully VZW will make some improvements to their LTE network and get some radio updates for us soon. I'm in the same boat as you, the 4.03 leaked update was a definite improvement, but a far cry from being a total fix.
As for when my data connection is working...holy hell is LTE fast. I'm clocking it in at 12-16Mb/s, which is killing even my home cable connection. I was confused as to why something seemed slower when I was at home using wifi. I disabled my wifi altogether since I'm lucky enough to have an unlimited data plan still.
Big issue
I have replaced three verizon Galaxy nexus's....all of which, each day i switched...i was either on the phone with a tech dude or (2 of them) one on one at the verizon corporate store.
All of them confirmed that there is a reception issue.
I reside on long island...specifically in the nassau area...4 towers around me..its HEAVILY 4g and 3g...3g is lower than 1mb...i actually never reached 1mb.
ever rep said its 'odd' and 'seems wrong'
now i love this phone...the one i have now..no different then the others..and unfortunately im waiting for the one i mailed to reach them ..to switch yet again.
the problem is..idk if i can handle this issue (4g drops to 3g and has to manually move back which takes forever..and very very slow pick up on any of them)
i want to believe this can be solved by a radio update..but judging by the insane amount of tries i have (every type on every version 4.0.1, 4.0.2 and 4.0.3 with kk6..there is no improvement,
im praying its a software..im waiting..and i have a feeling come january 15th...when everyone who has the phone is officially locked in it and loses the worry free exchange..is when verizon or samsung will actually admit whatever problem this is.
what kills me is i left tmobile for this (7+years) all nexus's ,,all unreal connections with free tethering and $65 a month (tax included)...my wife took my plan...and i took hers (she is grandfathered into unlimited data)
Now she has a sgs2...clocking in at 12mbs at home..ON AVERAGE...with fasstt radio switching...mine is unbelievably unstable sometimes can hit that but averages at 6-8. and in this house my wife got amazing connections on her previous 4g phone. very odd stuff, hers to the 4th one being the lucky one!
go figure!
I really wish this phone was more reliable with its signal, and hopefully VZW will get it taken care of. I'm debating about calling in to talk to a tech, but I'm not sure if I even want to because I don't expect anything to be done, and I don't want to swap phones for another one with the same issue. At the same time, I think I'd rather have this phone with some issues over the Rezound or Razr (once you go ICS, you can never go back)

Slow data speeds and spotty service

I've noticed spotty and inconsistent data/service on my phone. Even with full bars I get data speeds like shown in the attachments. When using the phone it will sometimes say I have no data connection and ask me to retry. I retry a few times and it finally loads whatever it is I'm loading. I've also noticed that my phone sometimes gets a little warm while in use. I've tried different modems with the same results and I'm about ready to just take it to the sprint store and get it swapped. Any suggestions on what might fix it? I can confirm that it is something with my phone because I've run side by side speed tests with my friends OG epic and their speeds are normal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you have the HA/AAA passwords and also i figured out that in QPST in the PPP tab then click Um make sure the user ID and tether NAI are both Nulled

Thats about what I get too. Its a combo of this phone and Sprints crappy network! My evo got better speeds as well.
I am getting the same thing too. Funny thing is that it just started being this way recently, it wasn't always slow. It is not just the data speeds, I am getting no service in places where I used to get service.
I have been seriously thinking about switching carriers and moving to t-mobile but a little afraid because I have been with sprint forever.
If something don't change by the end of the month, sprint may be losing another customer since the GSIII is on ALL carriers.
I am in Raleigh/Durham NC by the way.
I agree... it didn't feel so bad until I got my ET4G, but I just figured it was a network issue. I'm trying the EL29 modem on my Calks 1.6 now. If anything I'll try going fully stock and see if that helps.
Welcome to the Sprint network
Some people are experiencing network issues in places where Sprint is upgrading to LTE. I don't know how far-reaching the effects are but could possibly have something to do with it.

lol wtf
Yes, I notice the same thing lately with Sprint Wimax, I may have to dumb Sprint later. Sprint data speed gradually slows down from time to time, some area, Sprint shows only 1X, I look at friends' phones with Verizon, ATT and Tmobile, they have very good speed. My brother has Verizon LTE phone, I speedtested at the same location, he got like 17mbps download and upload is about 15mbps, mine is 1X speed. Suck, I gonna say goodbye to Sprint later.
Welcome to the Sprint network with the New iPhone4s d-bags. Seems like things were great till they showed up. Even my Evo got slower.
data
Maybe your phone is stuck in 1x..
What i do is i go into debug (##debug# in dialer) and i go to others, and then i select hdr/1x and i click on evdo mode. Try doing this but you need your msl.
Caution: ive tried it on ics roms and its really weird. Try going on a GB rom and do that. Oh and on EVDO, you wont be able to recieve messages, so when you are done change the setting back to hybrid.

NC market has some EVDO issues affecting certain users.
I was just told this after getting off the phone with them earlier today for a different issue.
Still incredibly slow, but I'm hoping the network update fixes some things. Thanks for the information though!

Virtually no service after root

I got my phone the day after launch (delay on pre-orders) and enjoy it so far. I'm coming from an HTC Evo 4g, which I loved, but it's 2 years old, so it was time to move on. The first few days, the GS3 was great. Good service, even in hard to find service areas. I recently rooted it with CWM and the super user thing. I wanted wifi tether while at work, like I did with my Evo for the last year. After root, everything seemed fine at my house. I noticed when I got to work though, there was no service. Not uncommon for my building, but usually it's spotty throughout. I then noticed the time and date were 3 days off on my phones display. I found it odd that it hadn't updated this all day at work. I drove home thinking the root messed something up, as I'd seen other posts about no service after rooting the phone. When I got to my home town, my service came back. I thought I was in the clear. Today on the way to work, same spot, I lose service, and it didn't come back until I made it back to my home town at the end of the day. I understand service may not be great in some areas, even though I had fine service with my evo, but to lose service in all but like 3 towns, virtually makes my cell phone useless to me. What is going on? Was it a bad root? Can I undo this? I didn't backup my rom, because I actually rooted it during a recovery process with a bad firmware upload. I can understand if I lost service all together, that it may have been a bad root, but this seems to be a different case.
How can I remedy this?
Thanks!
Simply rooting shouldn't have any effect on your signal. I have the Sprint version, and rooted less than 48 hours after I got it. I didn't notice a change in signal strength at all. It's still been about as good (maybe slightly better, especially for actual data performance) as my SGS II on Sprint.
Sprint is doing a lot of network upgrades at the moment, so that could possibly be the cause. What city are you in?
Rooting should have no adverse effects on signal.

I live in Salem (about 20 minutes north of Boston), and drive through Beverly on the way to work. By the time I leave Beverly into Hamilton, signal is gone. All through Topsfield, and Ipswich. My girlfriend, and other people I know on the sprint network, do not have this issue. I thought it might be the network upgrades, but wouldn't it affect all sprint users? Even my father, in the same area, on the same plan, has signal.
Sorry for the double post. Is there any apps or settings I can use to enhance the tx/rx power of the phone? Or maybe change the frequentcy the phone updates the signal status?

[q] no signal when charging

Ok this is by far the weirdest thing i have had happen to a phone. I plug into charger it loses all signal at my house or in my car when im home but as soon as I unplug signal returns. I have tried different cables modems and everything i can think of. First you all should know my phone is flashed to page plus and when it was on sprint it roamed here and did the same thing so i loaded a no roaming prl on my phone and tada still no service but here's what really confuses me when i go to work and charge still keeps service. I flash a lot of these and noticed that in some areas it just kills 3g when charging other areas they work great. I would really like to find a fix. if anyone can help me fix this im more than happy to return the favor!!!

[Q] Phone only reboots with little or no reception

Hi I've been using this lg p930 first with AT&T and now I've unlocked it and use it with a straight talk SIM card for t-mobile (I was sent a t-mobile sim by straight talk even though I told them my phone is unlocked AT&T).
I'm aware of the issues people are having with rebooting and freezing and am glad to say I don't experience this at all when I'm at home. However I usually visit my sister on the weekends and this phone does nothing but reboot. At my own home, I have great reception, no wifi, and no rebooting. Here at my sisters apt there is virtually no reception except by the side of the apt facing the street where the window is.. There is wifi here. And my phone reboots. It's rebooting as I type this post.
I thought it might be that whenever the phone has disconnected from the carrier and is trying to pick up a signal to reconnect, the phone will reboot..? Since my phone works fine at home I was wondering if anyone had a simpler suggestion besides rooting and installing a custom rom to fix the rebooting which only occurs at my sister's apt? Like a temporary fix? Since the phone works fine any other time I want to avoid any heavy changes.
Thank you... And if anything I suppose ill just deal with the damn reboots when I visit the fam.. Or be the reason why I shouldn't come over to my sisters crappy apt every weekend. :victory::laugh::victory:

What baseband are you on? do you get 3G with t-mobile?
heres what my phone tells me..
android version: 2.3.5
baseband version: P930-MDM9200B-V10j-FEB-26-2012-XX 1
kernel version: 2.6.35.11
build number: GRJ90
software version: LG-P930-V10j-FEB-26-2012
i dont know about my 3g...my carrier is straight talk. i guess they piggy back on t-mobile networks. currently they reduced my data speed to slower than dirt because i play some games on my phone which use a launcher to connect to facebook to play the game and somehow this is too much for their network to handle. they say when i refill with a new service card, my speeds should return to normal unless they monitor excessive use again which they will then lower my data speeds again until the next time i refill. i really couldnt tell you if im 3g or 4g.. right now everything on my phone connects at the speed of dirt.
well, anyway i dont know how to check that. please teach me how and ill tell you..
Why not upgrade to ICS? This may help with reception and stability.
this rebooting only happens when im at my sisters where there is no reception. it doesnt happen whem im at my own apt where reception is good. im not againt upgrading or anything, im sure eventually i will, just wondered if there was a temp fix that wont require a lot of messing with the system.. im usually at my place so if its not broke here then i dont mind leaving it as it is.
I agree with the "don't upgrade unless you need to" sentiment but ICS offers so much more than GB. ICS is also faster and much less laggy based on my personal experience with a Bell P930.
try flashing the V20c baseband. I was getting 1 bar constant, and afterwards I get full now. Other then dead zones. Montana woo hoo

well, i switched carriers from straight talk to t-mobile. i get reception at my sisters now and the phone hasnt rebooted yet. now i wonder if i do upgrade to ics if it will be worse or not... because i do agree gb is a bit laggy and the browser is pretty slow imo.. but now with t-mobile i get the 4g lte symbol ... and im orderin tg an extended battery for this phone bc the battery drains so quickly..
thank you for your helpful suggestions!
