[Solved] New questions about Android

Everything is working nice for me now, except for missing ÆØÅ, but I guess Ill get used to it.
The os is a bit slow, but meh.
So my I have found answers to my questions, but below are the original ones.

Thanks for the information. Big thanks to this wonderful forum, because I can run Android on my phone!
But as I have tested it I have some questions:
1. The wifi is really slow. It feels like I am using Internet through the SIM card, but I am indeed not. (I took out the SIM card to test). And there isn't any problem with our Internet, because it is fast and good on everything else.
Downloaded some older files and the WiFi is working much better now!
2. I got some problems with vertical lines, but after readings some FAQs I found out about a setting. It has worked overnight, but is it permanent?
This problem is solved, haven't experienced any vertical lines after boot fix.
3. I'm not sure if GPS is working, because it take ages to start. Just says loading... loading... etc.
GPS is working, but slow.
4. Since I am from Norway it seems like I have custom physical keyboard. (with ÆØÅ) And because of that all the FN keys are messed up, well except for numbers.But as I read somewhere the default mapping for Tytn II should be FN + Q = @
And that is how my keyboard look now. But it should be FN + Q = ? according to the text on the keyboard and how it worked in WM.
And is there any way to do the same for the Android keyboard?
Anything I can edit without too much hazzle to fix this? Cause its a pain to write texts without the Norwegian letters.
I found a custom kernel and it is working nice (I have asked for a custom build of it so I can have ÆØÅ too, but mapping is good)
Besides that I am SO happy with it! I just love the menus and how its so easy to touch compared to WM.

Okey, first of all.. this is probably a newbie question and I might have found my answer if I searched for a while.
But as both you and me know, it would've taken me much more time to search and read a bunch of threads than it would be to just simply ask the question.
I am a newbie at the whole ROM and radio business on phones. To be honest I just found out yesterday that it was even possible.
As you might have guessed I want to run Android on my phone. Im going to run it from the microSD card etc.
Well there werent really any problems to download the Android files together with Haret and then put them on the sd card. (If I wasnt able to do that I wouldnt bother.)
The problem is that when trying to run Android from within WM (6.1) it just freezes at full bar with the text "Go Go Go". The whole phone is just frozen and I have to restart it.
Well as I read on the troublehooting guide on "androidonhtc.com" I have to update my radio which then leads me to this website.
Fine so far. The problem is that I do not really want to mess with the phone itself. First I want to know how I can "backup" the radio so if I mess up something while flashing I can easily go back.
Second of all Im not really sure which radio which works with which rom.
I am running the original rom which came with the phone and I do not really want to mess up anything.
Here are the infos I got from the phone:
Rom version: 3.29.409.0 NOR (Yeah, Im from Norway)
Rom date: 05/05/08
Radio version: 1.65.16.25
Protocol version: 25.83.40.02H
The phone is HTC Tytn II running Windows Mobile 6.1
The guide on androidonhtc said that I needed "1.65.24.xx or 1.71.xx.xx"
Can I then use a 1.71.xx even though I have a 1.65.16.25 now?
tl;dr:
I want to know which radio I can use for the phone with the specs above.

The recommended radio for most android builds is 1.71.xx, however it will still run on older radios, but may experience some audio, wifi, bt, gps, and possibly other issues.
If you intend to run from SD card, then this may not be much more than an annoyance, since you can reboot to Winmo at any time, and as a newcomer to android this would have been my advice anyway.
To upgrade the radio is a simple step usually, provided your device is prepared properly.
A prepared device means that is ready and able to be flashed, and this requires HardSPL, ( basically an unlocked bootloader that allows you to flash roms/radios/ splash screens etc).
I recommend reading through the guides and tutorials sticky in the 'main' rom forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533976
This should give you an understanding of what might be involved in starting to flash your device, and should answer many of your questions about radios, flashing, unlocking, roms and other things you may need to know about before proceeding.

You see.. this stuff is confusing to me. I consider myself a PC geek, but I suck at phones.
The instructions are pretty easy to follow, but its not so easy to know if I'm able to revert the stuff I'm doing.
I want to do as little "damage" to the phone as possible.

You don't need to upgrade the ROM. All you need to do is install hardSPL, then install the radio. If you install hardSPL properly, your phone will be almost impossible to brick. It's really the first thing any person should do to their phone when beginning to do modifications. You can't "back up" your radio, but all available radio versions, including the one you currently have, are available HERE. So if you ever want to go back to your original radio, it will always be there. I honestly don't know the difference between the radios, I just know that certain versions are recommended depending on what ROM you are using, for the best signal and least bugs with wifi and bluetooth, as zenity previously mentioned. The reason why I want to try out other mobile OS and ROMs is that I hate how the menus are so frigging tiny on the WM 6.1
If I'm trying to do stuff fast I always click the wrong button.. And yeah I have lost my stylus.

Basically the higher the radio version number, the newer the radio software, as our devices aged, HTC brought out a number of software updates.
Our network carriers usually have custom ROM's which have a 'matched' radio for best operation, however even these 'matched' radios had small bugs, which were patched by releasing newer radio versions, of which 1.71.xx was the lastest and last official HTC radio for the Kaiser series.
There are also radios from other devices which work with our kaisers, but these are not recommended unless you have a particular need for one of those.
As far as the ability to 'undo' any modifications you make is concerned, it can all be reversed and your device put back the way it was relatively easily, instructions for this are best found on the wiki pages for the kaiser, along with a load of other information about radios, roms, flashing etc.
But unless the reason for not messing with your kaiser is in case you have warranty concerns, then pretty much everything is 'safe' to do, ( there is ALWAYS a risk of a bad flash, or unforseen power cut, but even these are recoverable in all but the most extreme circumstances).
Finally, take everything one step at a time, don't be tempted to rush in and try everything at once, you will make mistakes, you will also learn how to fix them.
As with everything else, remember to backup anything you really cannot afford to lose, get a 128Mb SD card with an HTC ROM on it, and don't panic

I'm having the exact reverse, m FN + Q is ?.

If i remember, fn+q='?' means you are using a tilt keymap on a non tilt keyboard, if you are running from nand, try a non-tilt nbh, if you are running from SD theres a setting in default.txt. ( board-kaiser-keypad.atttilt=1 ) if it's set to 1 change it to 0

No, on the nbh i'm using, the tilt keypad layout is set to 0. But I'm back on ext2 now so it isnt a problem anymore.

[HOWTO] Perfectly running Froyo (and future) roms on Australian Galaxy S

I have a successful story to share of running the latest EU Froyo roms on a Galaxy S with Optus. The end result is a perfectly functioning phone running an i9000XXJPO rom, able to use MMS, 3G and the Marketplace, all of which I have seen numerous reports of difficulty with.
This guide is intended for people on Optus, but is mostly the same for those on other networks as almost all the steps are identical, with the exception of CSC files (which are available for other operators at the link provided) and the optional installation of the Optus MyAccount app. I imagine the same process is applicable to any other current or future update roms from overseas carriers as well.
Hopefully this is useful to a few people - it would be good to have all the information in the once place seeing as the documentation on this kind of stuff is sparse, and scattered uselessly throughout various forum threads on a million boards. Just thought I should share the information before it's forgotten
Requirements
Ensure you have the latest drivers
Samsung Mobile Driver 1.3.800
I have had plenty of issues with the Galaxy and Kies under Win7 64-bit. If you are running another operating system you may not have to bother with this step, but I'd always recommend latest drivers anyway. As of the time of this writing, the *only* driver I've had any luck with is 1.3.800, the earlier ones that ship with Kies (and even the subsequent first update) suffer from USB connection recognition problems and missing device drivers and all sorts of annoyances.
Grab latest Odin3
Odin 3 v1.3
Don't use 1.0, it's a flaky and awful thing and you might take 14 attempts to get a successful flash before you go looking for 1.3, like I did. Not that it really matters, these things are impossible to brick. I even had my pc go into standby and disconnect the USB halfway through flashing once and it just held out its arms for another go.
Grab the required firmwares and .pit files

You have to register but apparently it doesn't mind bugmenot accounts much. My best build runs the I9000XXJPO rom, which is the latest XX UK stock rom available at time of writing. I had better luck with this than with XW variants, but your mileage may vary. Flashing to Froyo requires two steps, however, so we must also get the UK Eclair I9000XWJM8 rom to flash to first.
The .pit files you need are also on that page, although we don't need the middle version for our purposes, only s1_odin_20100512.pit and s1_odin_20100803.pit
For root access, you should grab the equivalent kernel replacement rom from this thread. I found the update.zip method was very unreliable and often wouldn't allow the process, so flashing a new kernel is a much simpler and easier solution in the end. For our JPO rom we of course want CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPO-v1.2-Busybox-1.17.1.
Get carrier-specific code (CSC) rom
This thread has a list of CSCs for different operators, with download links. The one relevant to our JPO rom is CSC_I9000OPSJG1.
This is the step that will save you a lot of hassle. Doing this preconfigures your phone to your operator - imagine how surprised I was to turn on my new UK phone only to have it automatically setup for Optus' internet and MMS?
Grab (or backup) any important APKs
One-Click-Lagfix 2.2.8 is something you should definitely install and do after flashing. My quadrant benchmark is at 1850 under normal operations (meaning, without killing all my background apps, tasks etc) with this applied, which I am pretty happy with for the simplicity of this fix. Note that doing this requires a rooted phone, so don't skip that step if you plan on lagfixing.
If you're with them, you might also want Optus' MyAccount app, which is the only piece of bloat they put on there that I actually found useful.
How-to
Step 1: Backup your stuff, and ensure your phone can connect to your pc
Use whatever backup app you prefer to save your APKs, application data and user data. Personally I use MyBackup Pro, but I hear good things about Titanium Backup. MyBackup requires root access in order to restore application settings, which I was mildly surprised about even though it makes total sense considering where it has to save those files. I'm not sure about Titanium but I imagine it would be the same.
If you've just installed drivers, connect your phone, make sure it is recognised, eject and disconnect it and then reboot.
Step 2: Ream your phone
Pull your sim card and SD card out, as leaving those in will cause the whole process to fail. I performed several flashes before reading a thread that warned me of this.
Step 3: Get ready
Hold down volume down, home and the power button when you turn your phone on and it should be in download mode, showing a big angry exclamation mark. Extract all the files you just downloaded somewhere, ready to be used. Open Odin3 on your PC.
Step 4: Flash Eclair rom
Don't change any of the settings in Odin3, except to set the following:
Re-Partition: on
PIT: s1_odin_20100512.pit
PDA: CODE_I9000XWJM8.tar.md5 (from I9000XWJM8 rom archive)
PHONE: MODEM_I9000XXJM4.tar.md5 (from I9000XWJM8 rom archive)
CSC: CSC_I9000OPSJG1.tar.md5 (or your own CSC rom)
Hit 'Start' and wait for things to finish. Your phone should eventually reboot, scroll some yellow text up the screen and then start up. Do NOT unplug it until you get into a working desktop. If it fails, just pull out the USB, pull your phone's battery and put it back in download mode, then restart Odin3 and try again.
Step 5: Flash Froyo rom
Close and reopen Odin3, and set the following:
Re-partition: off (no change)
PIT: s1_odin_20100803.pit
PDA: JPO_JPO_U_JPP.tar (I9000XXJPO rom file)
Hit 'Start' as for step 4. This shouldn't take quite as long as the first time round since it's only upgrading the PDA firmware. If it fails now, however, you'll have to start with an Eclair rom again.
Step 6 (optional): Flash root-enabled kernel
Re-partition: off (no change)
PIT: none (no change)
PDA: CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPO-v1.2-Busybox-1.17.1.tar
Repeat the flashing process one more time. This should only take a second, since it's just replacing the kernel.
Step 7: Restore data, apply lagfix etc
That's about it, really... just restore your data in whatever way you prefer and run those APK's for the lagfix and MyAccount. You now have a beautifully working Froyo Galaxy S running in Australia!
I've been running this now for 5 days, no problems whatsoever. A friend (also on Optus) followed the same process and is having the same level of success. I'd like to point out that the gain in battery life alone is well worth the upgrade, I've gone from 60-70% drain during a day at the office with Eclair down to 20-25%, pretty good! But best of all it's stock firmware so you don't have to have Optus' ****ty smiley button on the keyboard

Im on optus and I just dl jpd asian version from samfirmware and followed there instruction s for odin. Froyo runs fine. Apn backup for the optus specific sms and 3g stuff. Although asian rom it defaulted to english Language after I inserted the sim. Same quadrant score as yours using ryanza lagfix.

hey guys i am thinking in update my I9000 to froyo but do you recommend a stock rom? i dont understand too much about it but it seems like there are better roms out there, with ext4 support and more...

Also in, Australia however I simply used the register kies hack to flash xejpo and that was is, all my settings saved market was fine... Did a factory reset, after backup but no dramas.

How do I get the smily button for SMS typing?
I didn't need to go to JM8 then JPO. Went straight to JPO, flashed YA OK or what ever its called and away I went. Battery life has gone to the **** house. Id be lucky to get 2 - 3 days anymore. I was getting 5 days with my use(phone calls and sms minor fb).

I'll state again: if you you use the registry hack with kies you get xxjpo froyo and keep all of your Australian apn csc settings. The only glitch doing this is swype which vibrates and lags your phone however simply disabling and then re-enabling after a boot fixes this. Surely one fladh update with kies which took 30 seconds is by far the easiest method. I didn't even needed to factory reset, kept all my apps and settings.
I have since used odin to flash the voodoo kernel.

[Q] Downgrade to eclaire 2.51 version problem after UK 3.4.2-117 froyo ROM

The UK 3.4.2-117 froyo showed up not to be as stable as first seen, some apps crash all time and the phone to from time to time, especially the screens keeps to timeout alot and sometimes freezing the phone totaly when doing it.
Anyway, when trying to install the sbf rom with eclair 2.51 with RDS i am able to install it but not able to make the phone to start after that. Any suggestions to why, is this due to the current 2.51 eclaire version beeing branded? I started out with a 2.21 version before going to the new gb froyo rom. Pherhaps not downgradable meant exactly what it said

I have had no problems whatsoever with the UK Froyo release. In fact, I find it to be the smoothest release yet, as I have mentioned in its respective thread; Even without overclocking, it is a lot smoother than the Chinese Froyo and 2.34.1 and 2.21.0 before that. Ofcourse the quadrant 'score' is lower, but as I do not use my phone mainly for benchmarking, I do not mind in the slightest.
Anyway, before I go off-topic too far..
Have you made any modifications to the release after you put it on your phone? Did you perhaps not wipe the data/cache? Is it possible that you are overclocking your phone to such an extent that it is no longer stable?
And for some specifics - which applications crash all the time for you?
And indeed - you can not downgrade unless you've followed the instructions in this thread by Higgsy, but I doubt you have.
Incidentally, nor have I, but I have no problems whatsoever with this release and since we have the same phone, I suspect you have changed or installed something to cause your problems.

Yes basically i got a new defy, UK retail, it was never rooted or anything and i just applied the new ROM with RDS. So no, I had not done any changes to the version what so ever and i reinstalled it twice, always making sure to offcoures wipe it also.
My main issue is actually that the screen times out alot, and sometimes locks the phone so i need to take the battery out. Also a music app (spotify) crash inevitably all time, it comunicates with the memory card as it catch up the music as you listen so thinkning that it may be some issue there. Have seen some of my other apps also force close, and this has never happen to me on this or my second (my gf's) defy i had had for some months now.
I to however are supprised about this as I can see that no other is experience this issue, espeically the screen timeout issue wich is very annoying and happens alot especially when using the browser
Will try to find a new microSD card later tonight to see if my memory card pherhaps have been somehow dammaged during the ROM installation... (dont belive at all this would have happend but worth a try i guess)

Hm. That is quite the pickle you are in.
Can you install Catlog, filter on Errors, and tell us what it reports? You can run the application after you start the phone and have it log to file - you can put the file in

tags here to make it easier on the eyes. There may, or rather - should be a clue in there.
Alternatively, you can use 'adb logcat' from a command prompt in the Android SDK/platform-tools to get the log files to display outside the phone.

another reinstall of sbf did the trick! Will try to run the logcat to later to figure out what the app problem could be (maybe sd card read write issue I think as sameprobkem with second card) but now the phone works otherwise perfect, many thanks...

Hi I flashed the UK 3.4.2-117 froyo ROM with RSD.
My Defy was T-Mobile UK, 2.51 ROM.
After flashing the phone starts but I only get a black screen.
The softkeys are not responding but I can tap down the notification bar and open a task manager program that I had pre-installed which allows me to switch through applications. I can open various applications and the phone seems to be working like this.
I rooted successfully and then I tried to reboot into recovery using Clockwork Mod but the phones stays at the motoblur logo.
Is there anyway to downgrade or at least make this rom working?

I have experienced some things like you sayed; some apps get closed, and frozen phone and can't even turn off the phone
so i uninstall some apps that i don't need, and get a app name SystemPanel that monitorize the CPU use to see whats going on
Since then, i don't see more those things. I'm watching see whats going on

How to hack / modify Desire Kernels???

Hi all!
I have spent over half an hour searching but to no avail so thought I'd ask here, how are the kernels hacked or modified?
When it comes to the real tech stuff I'm a bit lost, and to be honest before I stumbled across this site I knew nothing about making custom ROMS, but thanks to all of you out there, you have taught me loads without me asking much, so its here I need to ask!

just search the web for "linux kernel" the android kernel is a linux one.
when you know a bit about linux kernel you can add kernel mods to it, as in android.
you just need to download the source of the kernel modify it and compile it than.
hope this helped a bit
ps.: and if you dont have the source you have to be a tech/kernel genius like -snq

I was afraid I'd have to know about Linux stuff, which to be quite honest I dont!
I have messed about with a Ubuntu Virtual Machine in the past (when I first read how to root the Desire) but I find it too difficult to understand, I'm much more at home with the old DOS commands personally!
Only reason I ask is that my fone is playing up and has overheating / reboot loop issues with anything greater than Android 2.2 (since it came back from repair when I dropped it & cracked the screen completely) and so far I am stuck with my own slightly customed Rooted 2.2 with standard features (no 4-in-1 menu, no wake & unlock on trackpad and the DSP manager wont work) also, I have not yet tested it, but I know only a few kernels will let me send & recieve MMS, the previous build was a lightly customed LeeDrOiD_V3.0.8.2_GB_A2SD ROM, but alas kept bootlooping after it became warm and I found I couldnt do much with it :-(
I am hoping to get a shiney new Sensation soon, but until then I wanted to know how to modify the kernel to add / remove stuff!
Is there an easy way to take a kernel file & be able to 'read' it so I could copy the stuff I need into the stock kernel at all, or is that my wishfull thinking again?

to understand what a kernel for the desire is, u can download the stock one on the htcdev.com site http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads
for example u can download the latest for our desire: "HTC Bravo – GB MR – 2.6.35 kernel source code"
that is the source code..u will see there are thousands of .c files...is not easy at all modify the kernel..it requires strong skills on linux and C language
about the send sms and mms, that is related to the rom and ur apn settings i think..not to the kernel..the kernel handle very low level actions..
maybe u would like to make custom roms..this is a bit much easy if u just cook it for example with the android kitchen (search for it)..the rom contain the kernel and the operating system and some apps

so lets check the facts!
did the phone overheat when it came back from repair (with stock rom)?
or have you flashed the new rom instant?
i would say you save all your stuff and do a nandroid backup.
than you follow this instructions to flash the rooted stock 2.2 rom and the radio
if the problem is still there i would say its a hardware problem, if not you can try other roms as long as no problems occure
dont play around with kernels, you dont have to, the stable kernels are in the roms
if they arent stable for you its not the kernels fault
i guess something messed up while you flashed something...
ps.: if you have absolutly no linux skills and so on, i would say you read into that before playing around with your mobile ^^

I know the APN settings for the mobile data & the MMS as I have written them down, the strange thing is I rooted my fiancee's Desire with the same ROM I was using at the time & she couldnt send or recieve MMS either (I'm O2 and she on Orange, both contract) and I have only found a few custom ROMs that allow the sending & recieving of MMS messages.
Also, I can make custom ROM's, I use Android Kitchen for most of the stuff (such as de-odexing, adding root, bash, busy box etc) but I find mostly when I bake the ROM using the kitchen I have errors on install, so I just prefer to use the kitchen for adding the needed stuff, then I'll just use windows to add / remove apps, boot animations & the audio files I want and just zip it myself & flash which has a higher success rate if I'm honest!

A: No, I didnt have stock ROM on, I still had either LeeDroid HD or a HD InsertCoin ROM, which when I got the phone back I did a nandroid restore (I make them quite regular & copy them to my PC for extra piece of mind!)

A: I also have installed an untouched ROM(untouched by me) a day or so after as the nandroid backup wasnt the version I wanted, I was due to be on holiday to Blackpool for a week, so I flashed the LeeDrOiD_V3.0.8.2_GB_A2SD ROM on both my desire & my fiancee's desire, hers was stable, mine I couldnt have the screen on for long before it got too hot (managed about 5 picture captures before I had to turn screen off for a while or it got too hot) then thing is, my fiancees gets got too, mine is the metal holders for the memory & sim cards, i either have to place something cold on them like a glass or even hold a fan to it for a few minutes until it cools down again!
Q:i would say you save all your stuff and do a nandroid backup.
than you follow this instructions to flash the rooted stock 2.2 rom and the radio
A:My current ROM is the standard one after downgrading HBOOT & using Unrevoked, but I used the phone's update feature to update everything to 2.2, then I rooted it and all works fine, BUT, if I add any modifications, like circle battery it is too much for the phone & gets too hot & power cycles, it gets to the boot anim then automatically reboots again, it can do this for about half hour before it works again, but I mostly just pull the battery & put something cold on the affected area! Yesterday I put my fone in the freezer for 10 mins, but using even the most basic customisation was getting hot again so I reverted back.
Q:if the problem is still there i would say its a hardware problem, if not you can try other roms as long as no problems occure
I have tried a number of other ROM's, but I think I will just stick with what I know works for now!
Q:dont play around with kernels, you dont have to, the stable kernels are in the roms if they arent stable for you its not the kernels fault

I really dont know what the cowboys done with my fone, but they have totally screwed it up, the microphone dont work and I have to almost eat the damn thing n shout, even then sometimes nobody can hear me! The WiFi signal is horrendous since it came back, can only get a full signal if I sit on top of the router, so using the WiFI out of the room is now out of the question! I also noticed they had cut off or pulled off something that I am convinced is the WiFi aerial, it sits just under the flash, a black tab it looks like, they insist they didnt do it, I KNOW otherwise!
When I first saw the phone, the back cover wouldnt fit on & it looked like they hadnt installed everything right, so they had it back as also the in-call speaker didnt work either, there are still outstanding problems, but as I have left it so long (main shop in Glasgow, me in Paisley with no way of getting there myself) I doubt they will do anything about it, i am SOO angry there isnt a swear word I dont shout every time the bloody fone hets hot & power cycles!

first of all i want to apologize i thought you dont have a clue about anything ^^
so i would suggest you try to flash a new radio maybe the 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23 helps, if you have it on your mobile reflash it just to be sure(if you have a different hboot, you have to do it with fastboot)
if this didnt help, i would say you try to flash the RUU
and when that fails i would start yelling at the customer support

[Q] Working with a Used Phone

Hello all,
Introduction:
My name is Dev, and I have purchased a phone from Craigslist about a year ago. I used to use Windows Mobile phones. I had no problems with them. I have used the T-mobile MDA, Wing, and Touch Pro 2. They have been good phones for me, until recently. I have always wanted a faster phone and the Touch Pro 2 seemed to be quick enough for me. Nope. It slowed down just like the others. My brother is younger than me, and he has been attracted to the Android market since the T-mobile G1. I never got an opportunity to enter this operating system market. I am very tech savvy however, and it has merely been a case of me not wanting to "change." However, I am past that and I want to contribute to the Android community. My first Android phone is the T-mobile myTouch 3G Slide. (I like sliding phones in case you haven't noticed. I must have the physical keyboard. I text a lot.) I bought it used from Craigslist, and it seemed to work fine then. The previous owner was nice enough to clear all the data off of it, and give it to me fresh. I have been using it since.
Leading into my problem/question:
Lately, however, it has been slowing down too. I want to reset it to a clean slate. I know how to do it. It is in the menus. However, I do not like how this phone has been modified. Why would you modify a phone? I have never had to do this with my Windows phones. There has never been a need to flash any roms or anything. They had updates which were simple to use. Plug the USB into the computer and follow the simple steps. Make sure it doesn't shut off during flash. Simple. I've done this plenty of times with printers, motherboards, CD-ROMs, and all other flashable devices. I understand how big of a risk this is. If the flash doesn't complete (or is the wrong rom), then the device will not work again. Unless, you J-TAG the device and flash it again correctly. But, that requires a lot of work, and a wiring schematic to figure out where the J-TAG ports are. I have learned this information from back in the day when I used to do dish testing. You would flash roms to satellite TV boxes and experiment with new encryption technologies for satellite TV. That being said, I am terrified of flashing phones, because I would have no idea where to look for J-TAG ports for phones, if I mess something up. So, in conclusion, my experience in flashing has been for testing purposes only.
Problem/Question:
How do I figure out what the status of my phone is? It says Cyanogen Mod on start up. My brother tells me this is a very good rom. Who decided that though? Is it a bad idea to go back to stock T-mobile rom? I've always had this thought nagging me to try it and see why people go through all this headache of S-OFF and rooting phones. However, if I go back to the stock rom, will I be able to gain access to the phone's internal memory again? I don't like the idea of losing the S-OFF and rooting privileges the previous owner worked so hard to do. I would like to flash the latest T-mobile rom to the device, but how do I know if it will mess up everything and clash with some code leftover from the modified rom of Cyanogen Mod? Also, how do I backup all my stuff? I want to keep all my setting for the programs I have downloaded from the Google Market. I want to keep my contacts and notes. I want to keep my text messages and MMS messages. I am one of those idiots who keeps all his text messages and MMS messages archived. I go back through the messages from time to time for retrieval of important information I may have spoken about with someone in the past. I know this is a loaded post. I am sorry. If anyone is willing or able to help me, then please pick any point in this post and we'll go from there. This was just an outline of everything so you guys can help me find a starting point.

Memory Card:
Memory card has a lot of folders and stuff on it from which I have no idea. Some of it says nervous stuff like ".android_secure" "clockworkmod" "2111.zip" "signed_Froyo_Slide_Radio.zip" "gapps-gb-20110120-signed.zip" "update.zip" "update-cm-7.0.0-Slide-signed" and "Android" I like it when my memory card is clean with nothing but a few folders like "Pictures" "Videos" "Movies" "Data" "Programs" "Software" "Music" and other general stuff like that. I like this so I can use the memory card elsewhere and know where everything is. Basically, I want to know if I can delete everything without shooting myself in the foot. How do I find out what each .apk is for? Will a stock T-mobile rom come with all the stock backgrounds, contact pictures, and all the other stock goodies? I feel like some of those were on the SD card too.
Things I like:
Speed. I like things to be fast. Utilitarian. I don't want any fancy effects, typically. I like everything simple. For example, my desktops are all using the Classic Windows Theme, and all fade in / fade out have been disabled. I want my phone to be the same way. Nothing I don't need. Minimalistic. I don't like to keep many programs running at once. This was something I liked about the Windows phones. I could click in the upper right hand corner and it would present a list of running programs. I could close specific ones that I did not want to run in the background. Android doesn't seem to have a feature like this, but it does seem like they close if they are not being displayed on the screen.
WIFI
How do I fix the WIFI in this phone? It seems like the radio drivers are wrong are outdated. It keeps dropping the connection immediately after the phone connects to a wireless network. I noticed a thread, but I cannot post to it. I wanted to ask how I would apply this patch to my phone without having a rom or anything. I thought maybe I could boot the phone into the recovery mode, and install the radio drivers maybe? I don't know what I am doing though, and want some guidance.

I have been searching and researching for so long and I don't seem to be getting anywhere. I gave up about two months ago, and now I am back again trying to fix this phone. Well, for starters, welcome to the myTouch 3G Slide fora, second, yes, your brother is right, you are running the best ROM available at the moment, but your running an older version of itif you like, i can link you to an updated version of the ROM or i can point you to the "Android Development" section of the forum for the myTouch Slide and you can pick one your self, if you need any help with your device, feel free to PM me or reply to this thread at any time, seeing as how iI am one of the last people who actually still support this device for ROMs, i would reccomend my "TeamFreedom LeWaOS" ROM, but im still working out some kinks in it, for now, i will give you the opportunity to update to the latest version of "CyanogenMOD 7.2":

4: when in "Recovery" use the Volume +/- keys to move and the trackpad to select "Wipe data/factory reset" then select "yes" if necessary
4a: select "Install zip from sdcard"
5: then select "choose zip from sdcard"
6: select "update-cm-7.2.0-RC2-espresso-signed.zip"
7: When finished select "reboot system now"
8: again, reboot into recovery
9: flash "gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip"
10: reboot system, and enjoy your updated phone, this process overall is the same for all android phones, and for all ROMs

Dealing with the performance of your phone, how many SMS/MMS msgs do you have currently? I noticed you said you dont like deleting them. Thing is, if you have a lot of msgs it can significantly impact your phones performance. Obviously it impacts the messaging app but in my experience it can affect the whole system. This may not be the case on CM ROMS but i have noticed it on stock. (i dont use CM much, prefer Sense).
Also u can try overclocking. I like NoFrills app from market. Its free and allows u to select your i/o scheduler and governor.
For backups, hands down Titanium Backup is the best if u ask me (and many others).

Update on CM7
Hey, guys.
So, I've updated to CM 7.2.0. Since then, I've been having problems with the touch screen and the phone app. If I use the directional pad, I can highlight the phone app, but when I click on it, it crashes. Also, the touch screen is unresponsive all the time. Sometimes, I will get lucky and when I reboot it, I will get access to the touch screen again. I am wondering if maybe I didn't update the drivers for the touch screen or the phone radio or something. I have a hunch that the phone app is crashing and lagging the whole system, so the touch screen isn't working because of that. When the touch screen does work, the phone app is also working. I am thinking of just flashing the phone with HTC's stock rom and then rooting and s-off it all over again, because I think the previous owner didn't do something right. I want to know if I can just flash the stock rom without any consequences. And, also will I be able to get it rooted and s-offed again? I'm hoping that by flashing the stock rom, I can test my touch screen and phone app with confidence. Maybe the phone app is sending commands for a newer firmware revision, and mine isn't updated to that version yet. Not sure how this works really. Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Suggestion. Re-flash the rom, but in recovery go into advanced, wipe dalvik cache. Hit back, now in mounts and storage. Wipe the following, boot, system, hit back wipe/factory reset, wipe cache. Flash rom, then gapps. Reboot. You should be good to go. Hope this helps.

Ran into a wall
Alright, guys.
So, I ran into a wall. It is now completely unresponsive to the touch screen. I had recently flashed it, and I am trying to do what you had suggested, Dvarl. The problem is that I cannot touch the android logo so I can continue onto the Rom Manager where I can flash and reboot into recovery. If I try to go into the recovery by holding the down arrow and power button, then clicking on "Recovery," I get the red triangle logo. It has always been this way. Lastly, my phone is not s-offed. Thanks for helping me out with that. lol Any ideas on how to flash without the Rom Manager recovery flash?
Edit: I think I have found the problem. I think my digitizer is going out. I am going to maybe purchase a new one and see if it fixes the touching problem. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks for all your help thus far!
