Can't make a goldcard... what cards have you used? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
Out of the four Micro SDHC cards I've tried (4GB Samsung, x2 8GB SanDisks and a 4GB Kingston), none seem to like being made into a goldcard, so I was wondering what cards people have managed to make into them in the UK?
I'm using a T-Mobile UK branded Desire

you must be doing something wrong. Have you followed straightforward instructions from this website:
http://android.modaco.com/content/software/308798/pc-application-goldcardtool/
Requirements:
* Latest HTC Sync software installed (www.htc.com)
* Spare microSD card
* Windows PC (Tested on Windows7 x64,Vista x86)
* .Net Framework 2.0
Step by step instructions:
* Format the microSD card to FAT32 format.
* Put the microSD card in your device and boot it.
* Launch GoldCard Tool (Right Click and run as Admin if needed)
* Connect Android device to USB (USB Debugging must be enabled on the device)
* Click 'Get CID' (If MMC1 fails try MMC0)
* Click the link to open revskills.de, enter the CID number from Goldcard Tool and create your goldcard image, which will be e-mailed to you.
* Enable USB Mass Storage on the device.
* Click 'Refresh' and select your microSD card in the drop down menu.
* Click 'Load GoldCard.img' and open the .img file you got by email.
* Click 'Patch MMC'
You now have a goldcard!
Click to collapse
btw. you don't have to format sd card outside of the phone, just connect phone to your pc with the card inside as disk drive, right click>format>choose fat 32 and do it

I don't know why doing it manually didn't work before, but either way just did it with my Samsung 4GB card and it's rooting as we speak!
Thanks for the help

Question about Offical ROM Flash

Hello everyone,
I just got my HTC Desire today. It's unlocked and unbranded. The thing is, it came with the Asian ROM, and I want to have a WWE ROM on it.
I want to have this official ROM on it: RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
If I run it, I get the Customer ID error obviously. I did some searching on the site but got a bit confused so need some clarification.
So, my question is do I need to root my device to flash this ROM ? or I need to follow this Gold Card Method to flash a WWE official ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715815&highlight=flash+official+rom
Despite a great job done by our beloved developers to bring up Android 2.2 on the HTC Desire, some of us (incl me) will miss 2.1 with HTC Sense UI.
Guide below shows how to quickly and easily revert that change.
IMPORTANT: You will need your GOLD CARD to avoid "Error 131. Customer ID error".
If you formatted your GOLD CARD or haven't got one please find the complete guide how to create it on the
Forum/HTC Desire/Desire Android Development/[TUT]Complete upgrading guide(root, unroot, flashing ROM & updates) and create a new one.
Be patient! Either options takes approximately 10 minutes to reflash your Desire.
There are two ways to downgrade 2.2 to original HTC's 2.1:
1. From your mobile using Micro SD card
* Go to: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bravo/
* Download your Desire's *.zip ROM file on the PC(I couldn't find *.zip one on XDA site)
* Rename downloaded file to PB99IMG.zip
* Insert your Micro SD card with GOLD CARD on it to your phone or card reader
* Copy ROM file to that Micro SD card
* Insert your Micro SD card with GOLD CARD and PB99IMG.zip ROM file to your Desire
* Press "Back Arrow" button and "Power" button to start BOOT LOADER
* Wait until your Desire will recognize HTC ROM and press "Volume UP" button to confirm the installation
* Press "Volume UP" again to reboot
* Done
2. From the PC
* Insert your GOLD CARD Micro SD card to your Desire
* On the PC download your ROM *.exe from
Forum/HTC Desire/Desire Android Development/[ROM] Official HTC Desire RUU ROMS and OTA Update URLs
* Connect your phone to your PC over the USB cable
* On the phone select HTC Sync for USB connection type
* Start downloaded HTC *.exe ROM loader
* Follow the instructions
* Done
Your Desire should reboot after that and boot up normally with HTC logo.
Now you can remove your GOLD CARD and replace it with the Micro SD card you using for your stuff.
In my case 2nd option didn't work but hell knows why.
GOOD LUCK!!!

Or is there any other method?
Thanks in advance
For flashing stock roms you only need goldcard.

The "GoldCard"
You'll need to create a GoldCard to allow you to flash an image to your phone.
Requirements:
A micro SD card - You can use the one that comes with the phone but I'd recommend backing up its contents somewhere before formatting it in the procedure below
Windows PC (Tested on Windows 7 x64, Vista x86)
.Net 2.0
HTC Sync (Installed for drivers only) - this can be found on the SD card that comes with the phone.
Creating the GoldCard:
1. Download the GoldCard tool here: http://android.modaco.com/content/software/308798/pc-application-goldcardtool/
2. Put the microSD card in your phone and boot it.
3. Enable USB Debugging on your phone: Go to Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development and enable USB Debugging.
4. Connect your phone to your PC and choose "Disk drive" mode when your phone prompts you.
5. If using the SD card that came with the phone, copy the existing contents to a folder on your PC
6. Format the microSD card to FAT32 format.
7. Change phone USB connection in to sync mode ("HTC sync" mode)
8. Launch GoldCard Tool (Right Click and run as Admin if needed)
9. Click 'Get CID' (If MMC1 fails try MMC0)
10. Click the link to open http://psas.revskills.de/?q=goldcard, enter the CID number from Goldcard Tool (the number starting "00" next to the Get CID button) and create your goldcard image, which will be e-mailed to you. (You don't need to sign up to the site, just fill in your email address and captcha)
11. Enable USB Mass Storage on the device (change back to "Disk drive" mode)
12. Click 'Refresh' and select your microSD card in the drop down menu.
13. Click 'Load GoldCard.img' and open the .img file you got by email.
14. Click 'Patch MMC'
You now have a goldcard!
thanks a comprehensive reply, forgot about modaco, thanks again.now I can get rid off buggy ota 2.2!

GoldCard CID Different since update to 2.2 ???
My HTC Desire came with Vodafone Android 2.1 and i wanted to genericise it so I went throught the manual process of creating a goldcard on a psare 1GB SD Card. However, I have since discovered that you need to have the Goldcard inserted whenever there are any OTA updates - I had one minor update which broke WiFi when I applied it without the Goldcard inserted and the phone went into a reboot loop when I tried to apply 2.2 without the Goldcard inserted. Now, rather than keep switching between the 4GB SD card I have and the 1GB Goldecard whenever an OTA update is available, I would like to turn my 4Gb card into a Goldcard.
However....
I have noticed the CID is different now that I am running 2.2 compared to when i originally created it when I was running 2.1.
Q1) Is it normal for the CID to change?
Q2) Is my old 1GB GoldCard no longer useful for any 2.2 hotfixes and updates from here on?
Q3) Will the new Goldcard work even though its created with a new CID?
Any answers appreciated.
Thanks
I will open a new thread as this is probably not the best place for this query.

Tutorial Repair MicoSD Card After Mango Lock! in Windows! Apperently HD2 only!

Tutorial Repair MicoSD Card After Mango Lock! in Windows Apperently HD2 only! s!
okay This tutorial will not work on the real protected WP7 sdcard, only for hacked HD2
only problum is I have'nt tested it so I will need a test rabbit to stab with a needle! if he is sic then he wont have any problum doing so! please volentear!
okay so this is how its done!
first fallow this tutorial for MicroSdCard repair!
Step #1. do a google search for "hp drive key boot utility" Download it to your computer! (the name of the exe after extracted is "hpdkbu.exe"(I have windows 7 & the utility would not install on my system if this is the case for you as well just click extract instead of install & run the hpdkbu.exe. that I just mentioned) hopefully you have a usb adapter...or card reader pluged in. Run the utility select the drive letter for your MicroSD card that is in the usb or card reader mine was "e"...
click next... then select create new or replace (its already checked) hit next... select hard drive (its already checked) hit next... select create new file system (its already checked) hit next... then it says something at the bottom then says formatting...
here is the weird part of the tutorial the program stops responding... right about when it gets to the part that says something about lunixsys file because the exe wont be useing that part of the program. Dont sweat it just end task it... now go to my computer & look at your properties for the drive (should say 0 free 0 used)... now right click on the drive and select format... now you can see your card in windows but the partiton will be unreconised as well as the size!
Step #2. Okay now that the mbr has ben repaired & windows sees the card we move on to kill disk! do a google search for this program kill disk!
use it on your micro sd card!
Step #3.after that you may need to reformat it
note thare are to diffrent versions of killdisk #1 works in windows the other is a lunix distro that is a bootable disk if you use the lunix disto you can skip step 1
& one more note apperently the program killdisk takes a realy long time to run xda user Perlian reported that he had ran the program for over 5hr's but in the end his MicroSD card was repaired!

Yesterday I used the tool Killdisk (Free Edition) to try and revive my locked Transcent 16 GB Micro SD Card. I normally use this tool to revive my SSD's when installing a fresh version of Windows. The tool does not look at partitions but simply writes zero's ("00000") to the medium.
I used the Linux version located on the ultimate boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/). So I booted my laptop with the ultimate boot CD in it (USB reader + mico SD card plugged in). Ran the Killdisk tool for over 5 hours (!!).
After that I booted my Windows and I was able to format the micro SD card !
So no Nokia phone was needed .....
Hope it works for everybody with a locked card.

well the hp utility worked on my card are you sure you selected the right drive letter?
after the program stoped on lunix sys i terminated it with task manager it had alredy sead fomating was done.
i had to pull the card out and put it back in!
try that?
then windows could see the still locked card!
the field where ti said you should select the drive letter is empty, and i cant write into it...

Got 2 locked goddamned sd-cards (on HD2), trying to recover them about 2 weeks, spend more than 100 hours no any result using ANY WAY!!!!!!
HP utility does not format my card, it says formatting, then linux sys, but the program is responding after that! The card is NOT VISIBLE, even if you end task the HP window. If hit OK, than program says that format is sucessful.
I did not find ANY LINUX DISTRIBS with KILLDISK, only DOS, which is FREEZING on detecting usb devices. Tried also to use Ultimate BootCD to fix cards. It is also not booting with USB Card Reader [tried ALL MODES WITH ALL AVALIABLE USB OPTIONS!!!] it boots only in NO UMB [def mode without USB 2.0 (only 1.1)], but discovers only SD-adapter with working SD-Card. When I put the locked instead of broken and try to switch working microsd on locked and start formatting, it says "WRITE ERROR"
So none of posted instructions for recovery did not worked for me (even NOKIA phones did not see the card). Maybe error with usb chipset or card reader, but these methods are not working.
Got Win7/ASUS K70AF with integrated Card-Reader (Alcor Micro USB 2.0 Card Reader) and locked MicroSD Cards Transcand 1GB&8GB plus NOT_LOCKED SANDISK 1GB.
Could you provide more info about exact version of HP Tool? I got 7.41.3790.0 from the first link of Google. Or at least post, where did you find Linux version of KILLDISK, or you mean DOS version? What card reader do you have?
Thanks a lot for your help!
Any Luck with this? HELP NEEDED
I just upgraded the SD Card in my Venue Pro to 32GB, and was wondering if I Could format my 16GB Sandisk that was in it before Mango upgrade.
I followed each step but was unable to proceed. Please any help would be appreciated. Or please point me to a Thread I can follow.
Thanks
Awesome! Worked perfectly and only took ~20 minutes. Thanks
this method works great in the HD7, revived 3 cards last night...
Not sure if it can be ported to the HD2 or others, but worth a look...

just a quick one: is your sdhc card seen, in any way, by the utility you use to format it?
for instance, a transcend class 2 sdhc 16 gb card is only see by the hp utility but when I hit the format button says there is no card to format (using sd formatter it only sees the card for 2 seconds) - OS Windows 7 / Windows XP (all drivers installed)

Diskpart is a utility included in Windows, so when you go to a command prompt.
type diskpart
It will load and bring you in.
type list disk> this will list all the drives (HDD, SD CARDS, REmovable disk, etc) it will list the disk by numbers. So when you see your SD CARD and it's # 2 or #3 on the list you type this
select disk #2... now disk #2 is active and you can start deleting partitions within that card.
But you need to list the partitions in order to format the entire card, you will need to execute this command in order to delete the locked partition. But before I will give you the list of commands you need. Once you " select disk #" do this,
list partition> will list all the partitions on the selected disk, you need to select each partition and delete manuallly.
select partition 1
delete partition override> for the partition that is locked
select partition 2
delete partition
Once the partitions are deleted you'll be able to format the card normally. But I doubt you'll need to use HP that utility.

Hello.
I am following your guide to unlock my microsd blocked by HTC HD7.
I arrived well at the end of step 1, but already I'm stuck at step 2.
I installed the program on my Windows 7 KillDisk, but the card still does not messing around, and Windows, as you say, it tells me 0 and 0 free memory in use and the formatting is not available.
What version of KillDisk should I use? You may link to the page where you download it?

Tried it and it worked. Everyone who was troubles getting the MicroSDHC to work for other devices should take a look at this. The rom used is the one by xbmod, so this trick can be used on all HTC 1st gen devices.
Spread it!
Thanks for your tutorial. But did I get you right that it only works when the sd-card is detected before? The problem is that my sd-card is not shown anywhere at all. So I think I cannot work on it by using any normal windows based program... I tried several tools (also the HP key disk tool or however it is called) and it did not find anything to format.

I'm assuming you have a large sd card and that's the reason WinXP won't do it. You can force it to from the command prompt "format /FS:FAT32 X:" where X is the drive letter.

It's attached as a MTP device. You won't be able to change the format of the actual card that way. You'll need a USB adapter for the microSD card to do it (unless you're running a ROM that allows you to mount the external SD card as a mass storage device).
Oh OK. Thank you for this info.
Known Roms which allow mount as drive?

* Formatted Lexar as Internal, no problem...though since I have 8GB of space left on the built-in, it's only theoretical space at this point. (Maybe don't format as Internal?!!?)
* Shot test images with DSLR and was able to import from XQD and CF card readers to the internal SD/'0'/'Downloads' folder via OTG. I am now stuck trying to get the images off. Many of the RAW (.nef) files appear corrupted by the NEF Thumbnailer App. Of the few that I tried to transfer I could not see the external drive. It shows up at 1TB of usable storage after the 'Unrecognized please format device" error, even though it's formatted FAT32, ExFAT wouldn't work, or vice versa, I forget which.
* My go-to Astro File Manager (free version) doesn't see the external either. (Though I didn't try to 'Add Location' yet. Do I have the drive on me now...no. Bah. )
* Lightroom Mobile will not recognize it either and/or Edit .nef files...but it edits the HTC10's DNG files flawlessly which I LOVE! Would love to be able to edit my .nef's on the go, but that's a gripe with Adobe, not Android. Again cannot export to the 1TB External, that's the rub.
* For giggles I connected a Mouse and it actually worked on the OTG cable and the handful of fellow IT cohorts had some Friday-afternoon-geek-out giddiness last week. :highfive:
Thoughts based on limited Googling:
* It's a hardware based issue - The OTG cable I bought for $10 is crap and only partially works.
* It's a USB 3.0 vs. 2.x issue (supposedly this was possible on non-rooted Galaxy phones with a USB 2.x OTG Cable using The Thumbnailer App based on a post I found from a photographer back in 2013-ish.)
* It's a software issue and I need to root, which I've never been fond of.
* My other slightly unrelated concern is that my DNG's are not syncing to Google Drive. JPG's are there. Google Drive allows for DNG's supposedly?!?!
Thanks in advance for all that you do....stay awesome!

one thing to help out out is in your file explorer while the external cannot be accessed from it normal location. you can go to Root>Storage>"name of card" and be able to save/ upload from your sdcard there

Thanks afuller42. Do you mean while the External Hard Drive is not connected via the OTG cable... attempt to access the SD card Downloads folder? That's where the test photos are now?!?
Dear Ryan,
1. Make sure the OTG drive is formatted in FAT32..
2. If you are to utilize OTG memory on your hTc 10 - do not use any BS file manager - but only authentic hTc file manager:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.htc.filemanager
3. Make sure hTc file manager is running in foreground - before you plugged your OTG memory
4. Follow the normally needed steps by selecting OTG storage and granting the drive writing_permitions to hTc file manager.
5. Enjoy ?
