Vanilla lock screen on damage control? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i was just on youtube and saw the vanilla lockscreen on dc. How can I get it?
Sorry for bothering you guys, but I can't seem to find it.
I can't link to the vid since I'm a new member but just search this on youtube and you'll find it:
Sprint Evo 4G Rooted with Droid X Boot Animation, Ringtones, Wallpapers and Multitouch Keyboard
What other things is he using in this vid?

Use DCUpdater to download the 'Theme' & DConfig to ban the HtcLockScreen.

Dconfig comes built into the DC rom - if you are using the latest DC rom, just open the app drawer and look for dconfig.

hmm, that didn't work, i might be doing something wrong, thanks though

You need to remove HtcLockScreen.apk from /system/app on the phone
or use Dconfig (included with damagecontrol roms..look in your app tray) and goto the banned apps and ban htclockscreen.

I had problems banning the HtcLockScreen too, & had to manually do it.
Using Android Terminal Emulator ( & after flashing the proper zip file) i ran:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblk3 /system
cd /system/app
mv HtcLockScreen.apk /dcbanned
Click to collapse
& then rebooted, & got the Vanilla Lock Screen.
[[ In another thread some other users had other mount commands ( someone told me the "yaffs2" part was not required ) but that command worked for me so that's why i posted it as-is. ]]

Thanks a lot!

I banned htc lockscreen and it came up all messed up, if i want to unlock my screen i have to slide up, not across. i downloaded the vanilla theme but when press it to update it shows "No MD5 file according to the update was found" and if i hit apply it reboots and goes to a screen with a box and arrow for a brief moment and then it shows a exclamation mark and the android guy. it doesn't do anything after that please help.

That's the default Recovery. Do you have Clockwork Recovery installed? If so, DamageControl doesn'y work well with that. You can either replace it with Amon's Recovery or instead of applying the Theme after download, restart into Recovery manually, & flash it that way.

thank you very much. yes i did have clockword mod recovery but i managed to flash the image manually

Finally, a theme for Roger's HTC Dream Owners

Guys, I've got the Hero theme (created by Soulife) running on my Roger's Dream:
Actual Image of phone (i know you would want proof):

Some screen shots taken with ddms:

Instructions:
(Of course what you do with your phone is on you, blah blah blah so don't blame me if something goes wrong)
1. Get root on your RD (Roger's Dream)
2. Download the soulife's Hero theme for Roger's Rom
Media Fire Download Link
3. rename the download to "update.zip" and place on the root of your SD card
4. Power your Phone off
5. While Holding down Home Button, start holding down Power button as well hold both until Rogers Logo appears
6. Make a Nandroid Backup
NOTE: if step 6 gives you an error saying sdcard not found, just try it again, mine usually give an error 2 times then works on the 3rd
7. Once the Cyan's Recovery image loads, select "apply update.zip from sdcard"
NOTE: if step 7 gives you an error saying sdcard not found, just try it again, mine usually give an error 2 times then works on the 3rd
8. Once it says done, then select the option to reboot.
The phone will reboot and may time 2 - 5 minutes at the HTC logo, this is normal. It it takes longer than 10-20 minutes use the nandroid backup to do a restore of your boot, system, and data ".img" files via adb and fastboot.
Very cool!! how is the performance? I've read some postings that say it was clunky and others saying it was fine. Right now I'm running Open Home and have a few themes for that. Sometimes it seems like it has to catch up to load the home screen but for the most part it's just as fast as stock (from what I can remember).

This works great! Make sure you install Weather Widget 2.0 to get the full effect (hero style flipper clock and weather)
Hey, just wanted to say thanks to mburris, for the post. Was a simple update to do. I suppose it's a good teaser until we got some ROM's happening on the Rogers Dream. I haven't found any significant lag with this theme myself. My biggest issue was, I was using ahome as default, and it took me about 15min to figure out how to change it from the default. Although, some settings will show up in either desktop mode, for example a different dialer (much better than the original colours)
This has already been done the rom is called MAXIMARv1.1
Update went swell. Easy as strawberry-rhubarb pie.
Some screenshots:
My only problem with the theme is the music widget is still white. Not a big deal, but maybe in an update?
Thanks a lot!
This is so very awesome. Thanks for the work!!
Update took 10 minutes
What does this all change?

It changes the artwork (probably mostly for icons) in the following apps:
AlarmClock.apk
Browser.apk
Calculator.apk
Calendar.apk
Camera.apk
Contacts.apk
GoogleSearch.apk
HTCAlbum.apk
HTCLauncher.apk
Mms.apk
Music.apk
Phone.apk
Settings.apk
Vending.apk
It changes the system images and colors in these apks:
framework-res.apk
services.jar
other than that, it doesn't change any thing
the status bar doesnt change on virtududes v3, maybe I missed something...

Well, I am using Weather Widget Paid version.
You could also use Beautiful Widgets.
They are pretty much direct copies of the Hero widgets.

hey guys, quick question: how would we revert back to the original theme if we choose not to keep this one?
Cool! Thanks mburris, works exactly as described.
A few questions for a noob if someone could help.
Is rooting the Rogers Dream the same as what is posted in the how to forum?
As well as using nandroid backup and cyanogen's recovery is it all the same steps as what is posted in the how to part of the development forum?
Thanks in advance!

Is this what you want:
Here's how:
1. Connect your device via USB
2. Get to your ADB shell
Code:
G:\SDK\tools>adb shell
3. get into your system\app folder
Code:
cd system/app
4. Remove existing Music app
Code:
rm Music.apk
5. Exit the shell
Code:
exit
6. Download the attached Music.zip file, extract it to your folder that adb is in, in my example its in G:\SDK\tools
7. from a command prompt, make sure you are in your tools folder and type:
Code:
adb install Music.apk
that should do it, no reboot required

Ok... so I got it rooted... now what?!

After a lot of work I was finally able to get my phone rooted and nand unlocked. Now I'm in the process of updating my radio/wimax to the latest versions from here. I am going to give Fresh 0.5.3 a try as well. However, before anything, what files can I remove from my sdcard post-rooting?
I currently have on my sdcard. What can be removed?
recovery.img
PC36IMG.zip
flash_image
part1
part2
In addition, after I install Fresh 0.53 and the radio/wimax, can I remove those files as well?
Thanks in advance guys...
Q&A
edit: Keep flash_image on the sd card
Wrong Section
So I just need to keep flash_image?
Now, isn't the recovery.img important in getting the wipe/etc menu?

All of that stuff was flashed onto your phone. You no longer need the files on your SD card.
flash_image you keep because it is handy.
I see. Now... pardon my ignorance... but what does flash_image allow me to do exactly?

Flash_image is the file that allows you to flash a recovery, kernel, etc. As the name implies, it can take an image (.img) file and write/flash it onto your phone.
So basically the flash_image is the file that allows access to that white boot screen that comes up when you hold Power + Vol Down to reboot?! If I delete that file, that's not going to come up anymore? What about the recovery menu? Is that engraved into the image of the device now?!
no, don't worry about it. You most likely wont need it again so you can get rid of it. You can always download it again later.

Flash_image is not the file you're talking about. All flash_image does is allow you to flash an image file. It will NOT remove your recovery or the "white" menu you're talking about.

Actually, the depending on what ROM you have, the flash_image file should be already on the phone (/system/bin -- at least on DC ROM), if I remember correctly. You can delete it, but if you ever want to flash a kernel and your phone isn't able to understand the flash_image command, you'll know that you need that file back on your phone.
I am using Fresh 0.53. Does that have that file implemented already? Is it safe to remove?
NVM, apparently I have flash_image on /system/bin as well. Removed from /sdcard/ then.
Thanks guys!

[GUIDE] Getting some old features back in Virtuous Sense ROMS

GUIDE: Getting some old features back
INTRO: For those who dislike some of the changes/features made to roms as they are developed and are asking how to get them back, here is a how to. It is usually a simple matter of pushing the old files from previous builds into your current rom. Keep in mind that the devs are building a rom as they see fit. As with any rom that you don't build yourself, there will always be things you want to change.
-If there is a bug, post it in the thread.
-If there is a change that you personally want, then do it yourself. Don't expect the dev, and everyone else who uses the rom, to accommodate your specific needs/wants. You may not have noticed, but you aren't the only one using the rom!
NOTE: This guide and code are meant for the virtuous sense rom, but the concept is universal. For example, if you are using some rom and the new version is posted with, say the amazon mp3 apk removed, and you want it back, refrain from cluttering up the dev's thread with a request to have it back. This is both selfish and a waste of posting space. If you are to the point of installing custom roms, you should first be able to type basic adb/terminal emulator commands to copy/delete files. In this case you would extract the amazon mp3 apk from an old .zip and push/install it into your current one. Now wasn't that easier than waiting and hoping that someone will do it for you?
NOW TO THE GUIDE:
Auto brightness mod - To revert from the auto brightness 'mod', which is far too sensitive, to the original, simply pull the services.jar and framework-res.apk from a rom before the patch, and push them to your framework folder. I've attached them to the second post for ease.
Reboot into recovery
Code:
adb shell mount /system
adb shell rm /system/framework/services.jar
adb shell rm /system/framework/framework-res.apk
adb push [directory of saved file]\services.jar /system/framework
adb push [directory of saved file]\framework-res.apk /system/framework
Reboot
-------------------
Keyboard mapping - The www/com key has been changed to a tab, which is good, as it was non-functional before. However the user keys have been changed too. I've modified a file which keeps the www/com key as TAB but also keeps the user keys as user assignable keys. Also attached to second post.
Reboot into recovery
Code:
adb shell mount /system
adb shell rm /system/usr/keylayout/vision-keypad.kl
adb push [directory of saved file]\vision-keypad.kl /system/usr/keylayout
Reboot
-------------------
Rosie auto-rotate - If you want to keep it so that rosie will only be in portrait mode with the keyboard closed, but dont want to turn off auto-rotate throughout all apps, just push the old rosie. Also attached to second post.
Reboot into recovery
Code:
adb shell mount /system
adb shell rm /system/app/com.htc.launcher.apk
adb push [directory of saved file]\com.htc.launcher.apk /system/app
Reboot
Attachments:
You need to rename "services.jar.zip" back to "services.jar" and "vision-keypad.kl.zip" back to "vision-keypad.kl". This is because the forum wont let you upload .kl and .jar extensions as attachments.
Thanks so much for this. I'll definitely be pushing the auto-brightness mod back, and I may do the keyboard, too (might let others do that one first, or see if rmk40/eViL release an update with that first).
Thanks for this!

Good idea with this thread. It's impossible for us to please everyone and this is absolutely the most constructive way to deal with everyone's personal preferences. There is one key consideration for everyone. If we make other changes to the frameworks which you DO want, pushing files from this thread which have not been updated with said features will eliminate those changes as well. Point is, the concept here is good but it needs to be maintained.
Also, the intention with Virtuous is to provide options. The ROM isn't finalized so ROM Manager isn't populated with all the variants it will eventually have. Case in point, we had to re-base on the new Egypt RUU and are in the process of re-applying all our changes. If we had a variety of options, we would have to redo all of those as well. Once we're in a more "final" state, you'll start to see a lot more choices officially supported with the ROM.
The keyboard mod you have here will probably just become part of Virtuous 0.8.0, by the way. I had not realized our replacement eliminated the quick key customizations (oversight).
Chances are I'm not doing it right, as I'm only about 2% oriented in using ADB, but after following the code, pushing the files, etc, the phone boots up with perpetual errors and crashes. (Phone cannot be launched, etc.)
The process in which I did it was:
Wipe the G2, install v0.7.0, update to 0.7.4, remain in recovery and use adb and followed the code you provided above. (Everything says it works, in terms of mounting, pushing, etc.)
I've also tried it where I reboot after updating, let the phone launch fully, then go back to recovery to push the mod files. Same errors occur.
The only two mods I was interested in were the auto-brightness one and the orientation one.
Any idea what I did wrong?

Yup, and I have "always show extension" enabled in folder options, so I definitely got rid of the .zip.
Maybe I'll fiddle with it a little more, see if I missed something.
All right, here's the error I get after removing the files for the brightness mod, and pushing the ones you attached in:
"The application Google Services Framework (process com.google.process.gapps) has stopped unexpectedly."
Basically the launcher is completely inaccessible, the phone remains perpetually in the settings screen because I suppose it's the only thing that it can load without the launcher. It also can't get a signal except for wi-fi, "Mobile Networks" in the settings remains unchecked, and it can't be turned on. Hahaha pretty severe for a rather simple mod.
Here's a full step-by-step of exactly what I did:
Wipe User Data, Wipe Cache
Install virtuous v0.7.0, then v0.7.4 from zip
Remain in Recovery
Open command prompt Change directory to ADB (c:\AndroidSDK\tools)
Entered the following codes one at a time:
- adb shell mount /system (mounts)
- adb shell rm /system/framework/services.jar (file removed)
- adb shell rm /system/framework/framework-res.apk (file removed)
- adb push C:\services.jar /system/framework (success 0.250s)
- adb push C:\framework-res.apk /system/framework (success 1.80s)
(I just have the files on C temporarily for the ease of it.)
Reboot
Then the errors hit once I unlock the screen.
Heheh, I can't really think of any other way to approach it. Hmmmm.
Any idea what I'd need to put back for video codecs? I'm running CM 6.1 but it doesn't run streaming videos from the NHL Gamecenter unlike the stock rom. I'm assuming its a codec issue and was wondering what I'd want to replace.

Weird, I have no idea why that won't work for you. Anyway, there is another way around it. Just open up your patch.zip (from 0.7.0 to 0.7.4), go to the framework folder, and remove the services.jar and framework-res.apk from it. Then go about the wipe/install of both zips like normal. That way the patch zip will no longer replace those two files. Anything that you don't want changed in a patch zip can just removed from it.

Sorry cant help on that one, I haven't run a CM rom since like 1 or 2.0 haha. You may try to see if others are having that problem, or if it is a known issue with the 6.1 and streaming videos. Is it only that site? Maybe a flash player version problem?

Yea, I assumed it would be out-dated soon anyway, as changes are made to your roms. I'll adjust it to keep up if the need is there though. It was just a couple of the more simple alterations that I made, and after seeing so many people cluttering up your thread with posts about them, I decided to post this.
Mostly, though, I just wanted to remind people that many simple issues/personal needs (like an app being removed from a rom, or a small change to one or two apps) can be solved with a little bit of thought and some adb knowledge - both of which should be present if you are working with a rooted phone in the first place!

[Q] change boot animation?

i have searched but cant find the ideal guide on how to change the boot animation AND mp3 sound. i see it all on youtube but its confusing the way they do it.
someone point me in the right direction?? thanks in advanced.
also do i need to have NAND unlocked??
I would purchase Root Explorer for $1 and do it through that app.
You basically need to find the thread located on this website with a collection of boot animations. Download the zip that's included and flash through recovery. If you wish to change the .mp3 sound for let's say the Dancing Droid boot animation you would want to go through Root Explorer and overwrite/place mp3 file in the correct formatted name.
Here's the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=708173
Cool thanks but root explorer is like $5 where do you get it for $1?
-On That Black Ops Status-
Oops my bad. I probably too it for another app. Try downloading ES File Explorer since it's free. I buy so many apps that I forget the price sometimes.
so it there any exact walkthrough?
im just not used to all the "experienced people should know what this means"
stuff..
like when u say recovery u mean hboot??
Recovery is when you power off your phone, hold volume down and boot on your phone while holding it down. You can then flash .zip from recovery by choosing "choose zip from sdcard" and finding the boot animation, confirming (as in yes) and installing.
if i mess up can i reflash my nand??
i already backed everything up..
Yes you can do a Nand restore.
cool thank you

The boot animation is in /system/media put the file in there & replace the existing one. It must be named the exact same & be a .zip I suggest booting into recovery & wiping cache & dalvik after replacing it
Will try that hope it works

Didn't let me overwrite my boot out said its read only. So my guess is I have to do it through adb?

Pushboot is the easiest way
Oh boy. Have you guys actually made a rom or flashed a boot animation? I don't think so. Here's a step-by-step tutorial.
1. NANDROID NANDROID NANDROID <--- Always do this when modifying your rom unless you like starting over.
2. Find the bootanimation that you want. Some come with the sound and some don't. I prefer ones without sound.
3. Get the Android USB drivers and ADB from the Android SDK if you haven't already and make sure the drivers are installed for your phone. If I have to explain that, then you shouldn't use technology.
4. Now, I would just do this the easy way and open up the zip file that the bootanimation comes in. If the bootanimation is named bootanimation.zip, then there's nothing to extract as that's the file we need. The sound file will be called SPC_animation_final.mp3. That's what the file names for the animation and sound must be.
5. Now, make sure that bootanimation.zip and SPC_animation_final.mp3 are in the same folder as ADB and open a command prompt. Make sure you Chdir to the same directory that ADB is and then type: adb remount
6. If you're rooted, you should see "remount succeeded" and you'll have read/write on your phone. If you don't see that message, you have to remount another way. The other way is to type: adb shell. Then, type: cat /proc/mounts. Look for the line that has an mtdblock in it and /system. You'll need that mtdblock number. The command I use is: mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system. Yours may be different if your partition setup is different. Yours could be 3, 5, 6, etc. If you aren't rooted, then leave this thread and go do that.
7. If you are still in adb shell, type exit to go back to the normal CMD. Otherwise, just go to step #8.
8. Next, type: adb push bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource. It should copy it over without error.
9. Then, type adb push SPC_animation_final.mp3 /system/customize/resource. Again, it should copy without error.
10. Now, to test to make sure this worked, you can type adb shell bootanimation. Watch your phone and if you see your bootanimation, then it worked. If you don't, then it didn't copy right. Not sure if this test will play the animation sound as I don't use one.
11. If you really want to make sure it worked, type adb shell reboot and that will reboot your phone.
12. ???
13. Profit!
so everything is done through adb command..
-_- thats too difficult for me.. cuz if overtime i wanna change it again..
its a hassle..

[SCRIPT] Random Boot Animations

Introduction
Here's a repackage and repost of my modified Random Boot Animation script. This was originally conceived by Nighthound many moons ago and was long abandoned. I picked it up and modified it for my Kang-o-rama ROM and the Optimus 2x.
And here it is for you Galaxy Nexus pleasure!
What it Does
There are various apps out there that can achieve the same result but this is a simple script that uses a random number generator to swap in a random boot animation each time you boot. The script runs one just before the animation and never again until you boot the next time.
You can have any number of animations that will randomise and you can also set a flag to have just one run without needing to delete the others.
How it Works
The script executes on startup, generates a random number, assigns this number to a boot animation stored in /data/local/bootanimations/, copies that animation to /data/local/bootanimation.zip and let's Android take over from there. Android will automatically prefer /data/local/bootanimation.zip to the one stored by your ROM in /system/media/.
You just put any valid boot animation in /data/local/bootanimations/ - calling it what you wish - and the script will do the rest. You should not try and call all of your boot animations "bootanimation.zip" - you need to give them a unique name.
Installation
Upon installing the script will automatically back up any custom animation you have in /data/local/ to /data/local/bootanimations/CustomAnimBackup.zip and this animation will be among those randomly selected.
Download one of the files below
Flash from recovery
Reboot and enjoy
Hit 'Thanks' below
System Requirements
This script will run on any custom Galaxy Nexus ROM with init.d support (which is most).
Notice
Some boot animations are distributed within another zip archive. You need to extract the bootanimation.zip file from that archive and rename it before you put it in the bootanimations directory.
Downloads
Update 08 July 2014
The script, in install.zip format has been attached to this post.
Single Animation Flag
If you want to view a single animation only you can do so without moving or changing any of the other files.
Simply Create a file called "bootanimation.use" in /data/local/bootanimations/. In this file place a single line with the filename of the boot animation you want to use. For example:
Code:
CustomAnimBackup.zip
When you want to revert to random animations again delete "bootanimation.use" from the directory.
Oh this is very cool! Will test it out shortly. Thanks.
I rather enjoy bootanimations. Thank you for this lovely script!
This script will run on any custom Galaxy Nexus ROM with init.d support (which is most).

Does this mean it doesn't work on rooted stock?

Correct. You need a custom kernel at minimum and a /system/etc/init.d/ directory.

That's odd. It does log what's happening at boot, know how to get a logcat?

Via adb, it's quite easy:
adb logcat > log.txt
Will save the log to log.txt
Turn phone off, plug in, type command, start phone, wait till boot completes, ctrl+c to stop logging. Attach file here.
Remember to boot a few time first, just to make sure you're not getting random animations.
Thanks a lot mate!
Its attached
Also attached, are the screenshots (available at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446531) that I am having a seperate problem with, not sure if you would know but just checking with you.
My screen is all screwed up when it boots, if I stop the launcher and restart it seems to be okay though. Any pointers to what it could be because (if it is glaringly visible in the log file) ?

Okay, it doesn't look like your ROM executes init.d scripts... which is required.
Is it this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1372376
If so that one's a little too close to stock... if you want to run a stock ROM that has init.d support I suggest a free MCR (MoDaCo) ROM.
Can't help with the crazy display sorry...
Very interested in this, but have a scrub question... so all I do is download then flash through cwm and I 'm all set?

Correct as long as you're running a custom rom with init.d support.
If not, it will do no damage, it just won't work.
Just flashed... works flawlessly... awesome mod

I'm on the same ROM and kernal and having difficulty with the script. Did you just copy the animation file to just /data/local/bootanimations or to /system/media as well?
- I ran the script
- Copied the few bootanimations I downloaded to /data/local/bootanimations
- Rebooted
- Black screen

When you say you "ran" the script, do you mean you flashed it in CWM? Hope so.
Other than that your steps are correct... nothing needs to go in /system/
The script logs to logcat... if you can get a boot logcat I can tell you if it's initiating.

Yea, I meant ran it on CWM. Phone is rooted and has the CWM recovery. Using AOKP Milestone2 custom rom with the franco kernal #12
But all I get is a blank black screen after the 'Google' word until the phone reaches the lock screen. None of the bootanimations are loading.
Trying it with the bootanimations:
ITCrowd, DoctorWho, and TheRoosevelt-Sharp-ICS

Okay, I'll need a log really to see what's happening... perhaps it's permissions on the /data/local/bootanimations directory.
if you can do this:
Code:
adb logcat > boot.log
From phone off all the way to home screen and attach it here I can look at it for you.

See my comment above as well but I have a question... did you create the /data/local/bootanimation directory yourself?
If so, delete it (copy the contents elsewhere temporarily) and reboot the phone. If the directory is re-created the script is firing. Then copy the files back in a reboot... that will fix any problems with the permissions that exist.
If the dir is not re-created automatically I'll need the log.
