Hi,
I would like to know how to configure it.
I have in my SD:
1024M for swap
1500M for ext2
5000M for Fat32
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Swap? On a Desire? Don't think you need that, there's plenty of RAM.
So you need to partition your SD card, 512 mB ext3 should be plenty, the rest can be FAT32.
FAT partition must come first.
ok, thank you.
And now how can I enable the A2SD apps ?

Once you have Apps2SD installed and your SD card partitoned correctly, all there is to do is just install your apps and they will be installed to your ext2 partition on your SD card. Use the Quick System Info app from the Marketplace, or see my thread to check if it is working correctly:

Way too much swap!! For Desire best is 0 for swap, 512mb for Ext2 and rest for Fat32
is it possible to partition the SD card "outside" the phone?
I got a new SD card I want to use, and the old one is running as ext partition, and the phone spasses out if i swap the 2 cards? so how can I make the external partition so I can install on the new one?
Yes, you could try partitioning by accessing Recovery Mode via your PC while having your phone connected with the USB cable. Use the relevant push files (available for download in my sig from the Nimbu guide) to access Recovery Mode, then you will see an option to partition your SD card. You can set the swap, ext2, and FAT32 space of your SD card and convert it from ext2 to ext3.
As advised above, set your swap to 0 MB, ext2 between 512 MB - 1024 MB (max), and rest of space allocated to the FAT32 partition.
Remember to backup your SD card contents beforehand otherwise you will lose everything through partitioning.

I'm on r3.1 rom with A2SD+, I'm really pleased with it but I plan to switch to some Froyo rom once htc releases it (with A2SD+ if possible).
What is the proper way to prepare sd card for change of rom ( now I have sd card with standard settings: swap 0 ext2 512 mb fat32 rest).
Do I need to format it again?
The thing that I need to switch between goldcard and my everyday card during the process makes it difficult enough

With DJ Droid's v1.0 R1 BETA rom (Sense with Froyo), it allows you to partition your SD card the exact same way you had done with the r3.1 rom. I have mine setup with a 0MB swap, ext2 size of 512 MB, and rest to FAT32 partition. To install this rom, it is advised to format your SD card again to get rid of any niggling bugs.
AFAIK, all other Froyo roms (ones without Sense) require you to prepare the SD card differently and not have your SD card partitioned, you need to push via ADB to install your apps to the SD card.

This will not be possible as you need to use the Gold Card to unlock your phone's CID if your phone is network branded. After that, you can root and then flash a rom, and then partition your sd card afterwards.

what are the benifets of app2sd???
The title says it all, I was wondering what are the benefits of storing and running your apps from the sd card other then the obviously being able to install more apps then can be stored on the phones internal memory?
Secondly what is the purpose of zipalign? At a very simplistic level I guess it has something to do with optimizing the apk though I am not really sure what this means.
Even with my Sprint CDMA Hero overclocked to 652 (min) & 710 (max) I still find the keyboard to be a bit laggy, will enabling the above help with this at all?
Yep, by installing apps and their associated cache to your SD, it saves you from having to install them directly to internal memory, which would affect the performance of your phone with the more apps you install. With A2SD installed, you basically save storage space and allows your device to run faster.
Also, consider installing a cache cleaner app to free up more space.
Zipalign makes interacting with apps more efficient after they are optimised making them run faster with the Android OS.

where do performance improvements come from?

I have seen the benchmark tests showing the speed improvements but I don't really see how changing the location of where the apps are installed to would necessarily improve the performance of their execution, I mean the phone's internal storage is separate from the phone's internal ram. Are there fragmentation issues or something when it comes to running the apps from the smaller internal storage vs the larger external storage of the sd card?
I think this question was asked previously but I didn't see an answer for it; when app2sd is set up, when you start installing new apps do they automatically get zipaligned and then installed to the sd card or do you have to do it manually?
Hmm.... i think you have a point there and i agree with what you are saying. With A2SD, i don't think it improves performance since it's ROM space, not RAM, that these apps are occupying. The main advantage of A2SD is having more dedicated space for storage of apps.
Since the 1.6 SDK was released, i think the ADT does this automatically on APK export. Therefore any app which has been updated since ~September (and was developed using the ADT Eclipse plugin) will be zipalign'd.
You can also do this manually, see this link:

APP2SD allows you to move certain apps to your SD card and run them from there BUT as these are placed on the normal root of the SD when you mount the SD, via USB for example, you loose access to these apps until you remount SD. This means you cant install widgets to the SD and such like.
APP2SD+ on the other hand uses an ext3 partition (or ext4 on newer versions) which then installs all apps & widgets to that partition and when the SD is mounted you dont lose any apps or widgets as is located in a seperate partition.
Hope that helps.

Any ideas how I could get my apps onto my 4gig sd card.
I have read the tutorial but in my clockwords recovery mode, there is no option to partition.
The reason for the partition is for adding my apps to my SD card.
Currently I have tons of apps and allot of them slow my phone down.
Should this be the case? I was advised that the way android works is, it auto closes apps when the speed starts to slow down?

the linux kernal will close apps when it needs to but that has very little to do with where the apps actually reside.
you need to partition your card with rom manager from the market in order to enable apps2sd( not the crappy froyo apps2sd mind)
copy the contents of your card at the moment to your pc. downlaod rom manager from the market, use it to partition your card with 512mb and 32mb swap. then dowload modinstalllocation from the market, this will allow you to chose where you save your apps too. choose 1 internal( ie the 512mb ext 3 partition for apps2sd you made with rom manager). copy all your content back to your sd card. all your apps should now be in your ext3 partition. if you really want to move apps to the actual sd card main partition, choose location 2 phone with modinstallocation but beware that whenever you mount the sd card those apps wont work till its remounted( its wise not to put widgets on the sd card). to check all this info and make sure apps2sd is working correctly you can downlaod quick settings info from the market and it will give you all the info you need on internal and apps2sd storage on your phone.
Many thanks for your reply.
I have just done as you said and then downlaoded aroudn 4 apps equalling around 20mb.
They seem to be on the sd card and internal.
The size of external has gone down by around 15mb and around 5-10mb has goen down on the internal as well?

That is correct. If you are using legacy Apps2SD or Froyo Apps2SD, the Dalvik cache (see here) remains on the internal phone memory.
So, when you install a new application onto SD card, it will consume memory on internal phone memory, though at a lesser rate than if the app was installed on phone memory (in my experience, roughly half the rate).
The only way to "resolve" this is to install legacy Apps2SD+, which also moves the Dalvik cache to SD card.
Personally, I don't do this - what I do is actively manage my applications using Titanium backup. For example, I seldom use certain large apps such as Google Earth, and some games, but I do want to keep them available. So I install them on the phone, and then back them up using Titanium Backup. When storage is low, I will remove them from the phone, but I can bring them back quickly (and without using data) as required.
I don't use legacy Apps2SD+ because I do have several SD cards that I want to be able to swap between quickly.
Regards,
Dave
Dave - many thanks for your comprehensive and useful reply.
What would be the limitation for using Apps2SD+?
From your reply im assuming it would stop me from chaing sd cards?
Essentially yes - you'd need to keep the EXT partition across SD cards in sync, which while not impossible, is more difficult than just copying .android_secure folder from one card to another which I believe should work ok so long as being used in the same phone.
Regards,
Dave
Excellent.
I think im ready to set it all up.

I regularly use two 16gb Class 2 Sandisk cards and a 8gb Class 6 Transcend card. To be honest, I've no performance issues with either and my Sandisk cards regular exceed Class 6 minimums. Personally, I see no point paying extra for a large capacity Class 6 or Class 10 card - I may try 720p recording on my Class 6 soon though to see if it improves the framerate, but I doubt there will be much if any difference.

I am not an android expert, but you do need app2sd or data2sd to fix this.
Any 3rd party rom with those X2sd supported can let you extend your limited phone storage. I don't know the android system file structure at all but here is the general idea.
i. App2sd
This will install the apps (most of them) on your sd card, but the data, I think, still remains on your phone internal storage. Your system should be very fast as normal even with low class sd card (most of the time I think :-0 ).
ii. Data2sd
This is a little bit tricky, it requires you to format your sd card and make use of the sd card instead of your internal phone storage for the operating system. You generally get an unlimited store, it depends on how much memory you allocated for the system, also you need a higher class sd card as better.
iii. Data2sd mixed mode
This is the best solution for me . it moves almost all to the sd card but some part of the system with more i/o on the phone internal storage (actually symlinks point back to the device on sd card). This will make the system fast (faster than pure data2sd), extended the phone storage a lot, but still limited to the phone internal storage (better than app2sd though)
Again, this is just my understanding. I haven't looked into Android in depth yet, but I will one day I have enough time
You can found the ROMs and almost everything you need from here:

Create at least EXT3 with more than 512 MB.
You don't have the option anywhere, to move to the EXT partition, it is automatically done by the script.
To see your EXT partition you must use TI Backup (Shows only as A2SD+) or GParted.
Ok not ext2
I have tried with ex2 it doesn't work , should I have swipe ?
I will do it with Linux
Which Rom do u think is best now ?
Where can I download a2sd+ ?

A2SD+ is not a program, it is a script. Included in the ROMs.
Look around in the Desire Android Developement Section for ROMs and pick one you like. Most of them have A2SD+.
Do some reading... rooting guides include all the information you need
I will format the SD and try to found some Rom with a2sd+
Why desire have very little memory it should be 2 or 4 gb

Hello all
ive had a good read at alot of resources, but cant seem to find one answer, so here it goes...
i have a new 16gb class 10 card.
whats best way to partition the card?
ok ok i no it all depends on how much space i want for apps and music etc, but as a basic...
lets assume with a 16gb you get full 16gb, (when really it will be 15gb)
so would this be best way to have it partitioned for my desire,
12gb FAT32, 4GB ext4 , 0swap ??
more info - aim to be always using Oxygen
what do you plan to use the EXT4 partition for? I'm total noob, but been reading a lot. One of the recurring recommendations (app2sd, data2sd) seems to be to use max 2GB EXT partition for stability.
(but perhaps you know better )
I partitioned my 8GB card the other day using the soft (MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition) recommended here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=SD_card_partitioning
Most people seem to recommend Gparted as the ultimate partition manager, but then you need Linux or a LiveCD, and I was too tired to make one of those.
4GB ext for what? lol
1GB is more than enough, and 2 - only you manage to fill up, if you download the whole market
And also some scripts do not support ext partition > 2gb.
As already said, 1GB for ext4 is far enough ! Swap is not very usefull.
Use gparted method...very easy n very safe.....

I use EASEUS Partition Master Professional Edition, with this you can create ext3.
In recovery you can convert ext3 to ext4 or you can partrition sd card only ext2 and ext3 and then convert ext2 to ext3 or ext3 to ext4.
For me easeus works great and easy to use.

Does this partitioning thing trick the phone into using the SDcard as if it were internal memory?
i'd use AmonRA to partition it. no need to fiddle with gparted. everything is done internally.

That all depends on what ROM u are running.. I use CM7 and a little app from market called s2e which moves all apps to partition
Other ROMs like GingerBurst use app2sd+ or data+ which do basically the same thing but built into the ROM
If you're using standard android app2sd u will always run out of space in no time

I guess you ask this question because you dont want to root your phone. I remember this thread from the time I used to struggle with this exact problem. Perhaps they have new ways to increase the int.memory these days.

The best way i've found this is to root your phone and install Cyanogenmod 7.1, and use an app available from the Play Store called S2E. You will need to prep your SD card though - I used a card reader, inserted it into my computer and booted off a Ubuntu Live CD, then use Gparted to make two partitions - one large main fat32 partition for music etc, and a 1GB ext4 partition after the fat32 one for apps. Once you have that, put it back in the phone and you can setup S2E to move entire apps to the SD card I have about 90 apps on there now, works perfect, makes the phone better than new! Hope this helps.

please please tell me more about it .. i am using latest version of miui. can i use S2E ? Miui already required a hidden partition for installation purposes. Do I need to create another on ?
Miui doesn't support S2E I believe as it designed for Cyanogenmod. There is another application called link2sd (I think) which does the same sort of job. I remember finding it ages ago and it not working well with Cyanogenmod though. Cyanogenmod 7.1 seems to be the most stable ROM around at the moment though, just a little slow is my only quarrel. This is from my experience anyway, haven't tried ICS ROMs. Tried Miui for about 10 minutes and didn't like it personally.
Try the ICS BCM 3.1U0
It IS working fabulous.
And it has a built in app called Mounts2SD. It seems that I can use both my internal and the extra partition and the space on my SD-card.
I highly recommend that you format your SD-card and get a 512mb partition. Then its smooth sailing.
Which ROM do you currently use?
