ok, so while best buy was activating my phone (which took a litle shy of 3 hours) , they updated the firmware or the software (whatever it is that was updating at the time). when i had a touch pro 2 i rellied heavily on xda-wifi program to provide internet to my laptop. am i screwed now that best buy updated my phone? how can i get my phone to provide wifi to my laptop? i am in the dark, and even tho i love the evo's speed it still does not compare to a laptop and what it can do. Please help. i feel like if i am in the dark ages without wifi hotspot.
Like the hero when it first came out, wifi tethering in it's classic form doesn't work yet. HOWEVER: Go enable your sprint hotspot app...I believe I heard that haven't locked it down yet so even though you're not paying for the service, it should work in a pinch.
I seen i lot of this going on at best buy while i was waiting in line. They didnt get to mine though.
hmm ill try it, im guessing using the sprint hotspot "free" until they fix it will be uncapped huh?
but now that they updated me, am i going to be able to root? i saw a few post that people were able to get wifitethering after root but it was kinda of tricky.
i, for one dont mind the sprint tv, navigation and other sprint stuff. i actually enjoy using them (i mean im paying for em right?). but i would like a program like xda-wifi (the one i had on my tp2) where all i had to do was run the cab and it installed the program.
is there anything out there now where i can use the wifitethering abilities of the phone while keeping my rom "LIKE" stock with all programs that came out the box?

when i go to sprint hotspot and check the sprint mobile hotspot it gives me "error code 67. Registration failure. your pcs vision username and/or password may be incorrect. please try again"
The (temporary) free hotspot only works on 4G.
ah, that would make sense...seeing as how im in boston and 4g not getting here till 4th quarter 2010...this is insane...what do i do now in order to provide my laptop with internet from my phone? if someone could help me with the root or something. but my phone is updated, can i even do it now?

I don't live in a 4G area. Last night I was able to tether my HERO, my iTouch (I know), my wife's PRE, and my laptop. But today, I get the "error code 67". Darn it!
You can root ur phone after the OTA if you go to http://unrevoked.com/m from your phone browser and download the .apk, then run it... seemed to work pretty good for me at least it appears I'm rooted now (I couldn't get wifi tether to work tho)
On a side note...anyone else use this method or know if this is safe and/or from a trusted source? I usually stick to XDA for mod stuff, I just happened to run across this, this morning someone on Twitter posted it
EDIT: I see the other thread, nvm

the only reason i would root is to get access to get access to wifi tether, otherwise i have no reason to root (im not into removing apps and stuff).
what other threat did you see that had to do with my issue?
the updates started the moment she activated my phone. saw the word 'firmware' and yelled "NO!", reached over her shoulder and hit cancel.
Hope so because my friend was testing my phone and when he gave it back it was doing the update. He told me there was an update available, but he made it seem like it was an update in the market place! Now qik force closes overtime I open it.

I would expect you have to be rooted and I'm not sure if that is totally available yet, if so can someone please tell me how. Bottom line I need my wifi tether to work again soon. If someone can help please do...

Go to google and type in wireless tether then hit I'm feeling lucky.
I Installed 2.0.7 since the 3.X versions didnt seem ready yet
I thought all the other carriers except Sprint removed access to rooted wifi tethering. I'm on Sprint with Evo 4g..... And its still awesome over here. Come on in the waters fine .....the unlimited "Everything Data" and free mobile to mobile kicks much ass. You aren't a data slave counting every gigabyte on Sprint..... Good luck with those other carriers! I have no clue why reasonable adults who own smartphones that inhale data at ever increasing rates- buy network and phone service in multiyear agreements to be restricted in data usage. Can I call it what it is? People are just stupid! And I find it hilarious.... You suck data thru a straw and I got a wide own fire hydrant that I pay less for! Call quality excellent, data blazing fast and unlimited ..... Hilarious.

You HAVE to be rooted first. To do that go to alpharevx website, dowload their tool, that will give you s off. Make sure ur pc is hooked to the internet and when u r done choose to flash clockwork mod. Then download gingersense rom, then power off ur phone, then power it on by holding down power and volume down. Then, go into recovery and choose install ROM and pick where u put the gingersense ROM, choose it, then flash it, then reboot to system. I like the Barnacle tether app on the market, but of course none of this is relevant if u have already updated ur phone to 2.3, ur screwed unless u buy an xtc clip

I had Sprint but thankfully I'm back on Verizon, Sprint has less towers, even though it worked wherever Verizon did, half the time it was roaming off of Verizon towers where u CAN'T get high speed data. O, Sprint terminated my contract because of that, I was where there was no Sprint signal, only roaming off of Verizon for an extended period of time so they cut me off, no warning, said in the fine print I had x amount of roaming minutes, even though it.was.free. they would not reactivate my phone either, so when I got back home I happily went back to Verizon, o, and I'm unlimited too. Sprint is cheaper though, I will give you that, but u can keep it.

No I have not yet done the 2.3 update, so I assume the free wifi tether will be fine if I get it rooted. Is the method real hard by chance

They removed access to them from the market, but that doesn't mean that they cant be installed from another source

Nope its easy. Once you have root all you have to do is install the app and run it. Give it su privileges when it asks. Hit menu after running it to configure it, then enable it and you are all set
Like I said Barnacle IS on the market, its free and u can use it after u have root. And if u meant is rooting hard, well it depends on you. I'm pretty computer literate, though I can't write code or anything like that, it was easy for me, I used the Linux version though because the Windows version was not working, might throw u for a loop, I don't know, but I hear the Windows version is now working, u can read about how to.step by step in the threads that talk about s off I believe, though I gave you a general idea above. You need to go to HTC website and download the sync drivers, I forgot to mention that, and after u install sync, uninstall the program, just don't go in and manually remove the drivers, that's what u need. Good luck, pm me if u need more info maybe I can help, I don't mind helping people I would hope they would do the same for.me

If you don't think Sprint will be close behind in choking off that "unlimited data" then you must be....can I call you what you are? Blind. I have 2 more years of unlimited Verizon data, so I figure you and I will be hitting that tiered data plan at about the same time.....
First, this belongs in general/discussion. Second I'm on Verizon, and, not once worried about my unlimited data.. all existing customers can stay unlimited as long as they don't change their plan. I can even renew my contract, keep my same plan and still be unlimited.

NoClue....
I used the Windows version of AlphaRev a couple of days ago. It is now working great. The hardest part was typing in the access code it gives you (a string of about 18 characters -- I missed one the first time I tried. Nothing bad happened, I just had to start over.)
Rooting process takes about 5 minutes. I tried CyanogenMod 7.1 beta for DInc 2, but went back to Gingersense, which is essentially the OTA Gingerbread update but with permanent root. I had been using CM7 on my previous phone (OG Droid) and liked it, but I think the gingersense is just a little more elegant looking. Keeps the best of Sense and Gingerbread and lets you get rid of any crap you don't want.
Once you are rooted getting wireless tethering is as simple as installing an app.
If youre rooted, cm7 comes with a native free wifi tether. if youre not running cm7 the barnacle app from market works fine, there are other free wifi tether apps that you can google search for. if youre running a stock rom you can use the vzw hotspot for free wifi tether access by using this hack.

Install: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/170406/droid apps/wifi_tether_v3_1-beta2.apk
It's the best wifi tether app I've found. The market will refuse to allow you to install it on the Dinc2 due to Verizon forbidding it, but installing the APK directly works fine.
If you need the stock Gingerbread ROM: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/170406/droid apps/cm_vivow_full-4.zip
Gingerbread ROM's removed Verizon apps: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/170406/droid apps/rmk-ROM-vivow_gingerbread_2.18.605.4-removed_apps.zip
Radio update: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/170406/droid apps/PG32IMG.zip
MD5 checker: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/170406/droid apps/md5summer.exe
Once rooted I think you can even just use the stock wifi router app, when I wasn't rooted I tried it and it pulled up a Verizon webpage. now it doesn't. haven't been charged yet..
hey jeremytn
I see a bunch of gingersense things out there. is there a certain one I want to DL
Sorry but I haven't seen this question asked anywhere else. Is it possible to simply root the phone and use all of the wonders of root access (ie free tether and the removal of bloat ware) without having to flash a custom rom that may or may not allow my 4g, wifi, and gps to work.
um last i knew u could just root it and use free tether. like opengarden or sumthing from the market. as far a bloatware idk maybe search around the forums for sumthing to flash to it. these guys prolly have sumthing lol
You could root the phone and install a wireless tether app and then use titanium backup pro to freeze bloatware

That is what I originally did. After a few months though I did install a new ROM.

Ok I rooted my phone using unrevoked3 with no problems. I was and am able to use the WiFi hotspot for share my internet with other devices over WiFi (no wires) . Now my cousin just got the evo and want to have free WiFi like me and not have to pay Sprint 30 bucks a month for it. His phone is 2.3.3 so unrevoked3 won't work so I tried for the first time revolutionary. I have the Superuser and it is in s-off,,, but when i go to try the sprint WiFi hotspot I get the message that I don't have that on my plan so it doesn't work. It seem to me that it is rooted, so why doesn't this work like it does for me? Do I need to flash a ROM to get it to work or did I goof something up? Please help me out, I spent four hours playing around with this today and reading different threads on rooting the new way,, all for family but feel like I let my cousin down by not getting him what I said I was able to do. So i need to help of some of the brightest techies on the best forum ever!

The reason it doesn't work is your trying to use the sprint hotspot you HAVE to flash a Rom to.get the hacked sprint hotspot or you can use a wireless tether app

I'm trying to remove clockworkmod on my evo 4g. I rooted using unrevoked forever last year and now need to take my phone in to have another number switched to my phone. I used the s-on tool without any issues and was trying to remove the clockwork mod cause i wasn't too sure of what they would check when i have my number switched over. Do i need to worry about clockwork or am i just fine with the s-on being displayed when they switch over the number. Any helped is highly appreciated! Thanks
If ur running a custom rom then id recommend going back to stock so they don't know u were ever rooted. Turning s on was a way to relock ur boot loader but u still have super user and busy box installed. Also if ur running sense then they prob won't notice but if using cm7 or aosp then they will for sure know the difference. Also if on sense a lot of sprint stores don't care that u r rooted. I took my gfs evo which I had rooted into sprint store to fix charger port and I told them over phone that it was rooted...they said they didn't care and to bring it in rooted and they would look at it. Turns out she got a new phone and they just took the rooted phone and didn't care. Id say call and ask. If they say they don't work on rooted phones them ruu it and take it in. Just don't tell them who u r on phone lol
ALSO...
Thanks for the reply Papa Smurf! As far as any any custom roms on my phone...i have none. I have spb 3d as my home thingy that spins around but everything is pretty much stock except for that clockwork. When i rooted i never loaded any custom roms to change the way my phone looked as far as icons and etc. So id say im stock cause i can change from spb 3d back to sense for my home screen without any issues. Also your right i do still have super users and busy box installed in my phone. I kinda worried about this though due to the fact that sometimes ppl are noisey and look through your phone apps, maybe ill just block access to my apps period that way they wont be able to look at them...hmmm lol. I was also trying to find the infamous pc36img...do you know where i can find multiple versions of it for evos? I am curently using hboot 2.10.0001 radio 2.15.00.11.19 if this helps with clockworkmod recovery v3.0.0.5.
ps if sprint cancels out my line due to "too much data roaming/data usage" can i just sell my evo without any issues or will there be a block on that phone from being activated?
Thanks a lot!
I've had them change numbers over the phone. You don't even need to go in. They just have you get the numbers under the battery and do it over the phone. Took me 15 minutes.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Thanks! Is there a way to do it online? The reason im asking is cause they are supposed to end my cancel my line today and i wanted to switch everything before they do it cause i wanna switch my evo over to another account under a diff name and number but dont want them to put a hold on the evo that has been rooted. Cause in my head they may block that phone from ever being able to be activated cause of the data roaming issues that they dont like, idk smh. Thanks though. Sorry if im asking too many ?'s i'm just trying to get everything figured out asap. And since s-on is now showing what does that actually mean? cause im still able to use my root required programs
Is there any non Root Stock Wifi Tether? Was talking to some guys at sprint, saying they had one and he's not rooted and on stock and it was on Google play but keeps getting removed (I understand why lol) but would anyone know anything about this?

As far as I know, the only way you can get tether (and not let Sprint know) is by rooting, or getting a prepaid monthly plan with Sprint
Sent from my PG06100
Hmm. I'm curious how to do it without. Seems just as simple as hacking the app. And sprint will know no matter what. Root or not rooted they will still detect the same way, huge jump in data usage
What about this one?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether&hl=en
That requires clockwork mod which usually people only have if there on and off root users.

I don't think it requires a specific recovery. It just requires that you install a specific program on the PC. Just because "ClockworkMod" is in the name doesn't mean it requires ClockworkMod recovery.
I have seen one in the market called portable wifi hotspot by Core Technology for 99¢ (Has good reviews for S3) I'm sure you could Google or torrent it for free. Def. Would not be asking the sprint guys about it because your practically stealing money from them. Or just spend like 5 mins rooting it and get barnicle or the other top wifi tether app..
I see you're still on a mission to prove the point that this phone is perfect and doesnt need rooted despite the issues you posted about previously.between the lack of a shutter sound toggle, borked keyboard, and now wanting to tether. Admit that there is valid reasons to root it and root it. Damn. With all the changes made in the jb update to stop even rooted users from tethering free you wont do it without having to plug in via usb if its even doable. PROMISE. Theres 150 different ways to restore a samsung to stock just root the damn thing.

EndlessDissent is correct, it doesn't require CWM recovery to work
The only catch is that if you're unrooted you need to install a client on your computers side, but other than that it doesnt require any extra work

Lol man, I never said it was perfect or anything like that, some other people where saying that, I just said I like how it is as stock and all that. If I was to root, I'd get to addicted and then super picky and blah blah blah. Made the post because I heard of a non stock way. I only use to root for wifi tether, and some customizations but I don't care for much of it anymore.
Anyways on another note, I tried downloading the clockwork one from the market and it said your phone provider doesn't support this application. I found another but it was glitchy. I'll try alternative download sources of the clockwork one and check into that 99 cent one.
And one of the market issues is that a lot of the wifi tether apps are removed within a couple weeks or sometimes days
FoxFi
I have used this. Easy to use. I cant post links yet, but google FoxFi.
edit: it doesnt work for sprint. Sorry guys

Look up the wifi tether apps from your computer browser (not signed into a google account) and you can view all apps, even if they are removed by Sprint
Then if you want the app you could just google it and there is a high chance you will find it either from the official page itself or a mirror somewhere
