How to root my evo after the otc upgrade - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had the unrevoked and wireless tether on my phone, and I thought when I did the upgrade it would not mess with my root, but it did. I just want to know what is a easy way to root my EVO and get the free wireless tether after the OTC upgrade. Is there a root job like unreoked that just always you to root your phone just for tethering, or should I totally root my phone, and if so, how easy is it to do it.

there is something called simple root, its an app that will basically root your phone for you. Check it out in the dev section. Never tried it before so I can't comment on it.

[Q] unrevoked mobile app quesiton

ok, so i am fully rooted and tricked out, but my dad is still running a stock evo. he wants free wireless tether, but doesnt want to be rooted. i used a temporary root version of unrevoked that runs directly on the phone to do this when i first got the evo, and i am trying to do the same for him. i used the unrevoked mobile app located at www.unrevoked.com/m/ to do this for myself when i just got the evo, so i downloaded it and put it on his phone. when i hit the root button, it says it cant find the marker or extract the marker or something like that. i am aware that this uses the rageagainstthecage.bin exploit, and i know how to do it manually, but this would really be a good tool for my tech-deaf dad. does somebody know if there is any way to use this, or does it not work on the newest ota? thanks

As far as I know, you can't use the wireless tether program without being permanently rooted. Or are you planing on temporarily rooting every time you need the wireless tether program?
i am planning on temporarily rooting every time. i know for a fact that this worked on the original evo 2.1 rom. i am just asking if it will work on the newest ota, and if it does, how can i get it to work for me, because it is not. thanks for responding.

FOTA manual install Unrooted

So i did the manual update not realizing it was going to remove my root with unrevoked. I only use root for wireless tether really. I'm so new to androids and rooting that i havent messed around with it for anything else. Whats the best way to get my phone back to root, and simplified instructions as, like i said, im fairly new to it. Thanks!
Unrevoked
Sent from my Evo 4G using XDA App
you saying i should just run the unrevoked package again?

[Q] wifi tether without being rooted

how can you have a mobile hotspot without being rooted and if not possible is any temporary root apps or programs that i can install. Which bring me to this question as well, Is unrevoked a temporary root program?
You can do WIRED Tethering using free apps like PDAnet without being rooted, however free wireless tethering requires rooting.
And there is no "temporary Root." You're either rooted or not. Either way, you CAN unroot if you choose
PDAnet and EasyTether have a trial period of like a month? maybe. After that trial period is over, you can still use the software for USB Tether however you will not be able to connect to secure sites and have to purchase a one time license.

It's easy enough to unroot if you ever need to take the phone in for warranty stuff. Read up and watch some movies on thedroiddemos dot com for more info. Do a good week or more's worth of research before you make your decision. Most of the problems you might run into have been run into before and have been solved or prevented with updates to the things you'll load to the phone.
Good luck!

Z4root is a temporary root app, but unrevoked is not. you could part $30 for tether, not that I would

Proper Root Procedure for G2

Hello all and thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.
I followed a lifehacker.com guide called the "always up to date" rooting guide.. Which led me to rooting my HTC T-Mobile G2 using the Visionary method via the XDA Post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
The process seemed to be succesfull, I have updated my ROM with Cyanogen's update-cm-7.0.3-vision-signed.zip, which is incredible, and all seems to be working well. My questions are:
1. Should I be looking in to 'undoing' my root with Visionary as it seems to be depreceiated, and if so how would I do that.
2. What will happen when T-Mobile pushes their officail OTA 2.3 update, which should be any time now.
This is a great time to say thanks to all of the dev's and people who put this stuff out there. Thanks!
Well I wouldn't say you used Visionary to root your phone. I followed same method and G-free was used to root your phone. Visionary was just there to give you temp root access. I'd get rid of Visionary at this point as its of no use anymore and could do more harm than good.
As far as unrooting, I wouldn't worry about it too much. The only situation you may wanna consider unrooting is if you run into some hardware issue and need to get a replacement, and even then its not always necessary. The OTA that is forthcoming is something you probably don't want to mess with. It can be found on this site in the untouched form, but it will unroot your phone and bring stronger security, so you would be unable to root your phone again using the method you used or any of the other widely used methods. I'm not sure if rooted phones actually get official OTAs pushed to them. I had a rooted MT3G and got a notification saying an update to Froyo was coming, but it never got pushed out to my handset. (Which was a good thing)
You don't want to accept any OTA updates if your rooted. The best procedure to follow for root would be in the wiki with "rage" and "G-Free" here is a link to the wiki: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
Thanks for the reply's and info, I will definitely not accept any OTA updates, and I feel pretty good with this setup. Now on to exploring some ROM features..
Thanks again.

4.2.2 Root problems?

Hey everyone! I recently (yes, just recently :/ ) updated the Verizon Galaxy Nexus from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 this past weekend and I used the app "Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper" to keep root access while downloading the OTA. I didn't want to update to 4.2.2 but long story short, I did. I was unwilling to update since many people have had troubles getting wifi tether to work and I wanted to avoid that and keep running on 4.1.2 to keep wifi tether with no problems (Don't fix what's broken, right?). Well, I used another app "Root Checker" to validate my root access, and it says "Sorry! This device does not have proper root access." and I was wondering how I lost my root access in the process? Would anyone know by chance? I'm not too familiar with root anymore since I've had my phone rooted for over a year now using the 1-click toolkit that many people dislike. I was wondering what I should do next, in order to have root access once again. I don't want to run the risk of bricking my phone and having to pay big bucks for a new phone. Anything helps!!
