Can someone port the new Gmail app to make it installable on 2.1? (I'd love to have the ability to select text in Gmail).
P.S. Yes I tried extracting it from a 2.2 ROM and just install it but it won't install
I want it too
also +1
though i'm not sure this can be done easily
You can select text in the default HTC email app. Not the same, but I have used this method a number of time, actually better because it lets you select specific text as well as all text...
Maybe worth trying?

First of all I am using manila 2.5. When you slide to contacts a button appears saying "all people". When clicking on this button you abviously open the contacts manager, but it is the old (or windows) manager. The new contacts manager however is not only nicer, but gives you all the options back to send mails from a contact card even if you have installed the SMS patch. Because of the SMS patch you don't have this option any more in the old contacts manager.
My question now is how can I make sure that the "all people" button opens the new contacts manager?
Thanks in advance

What SMS patch are you using? I used this one here, and it did not affect my contacts list. Make sure you follow all 4 of the manual steps described in that post (not just step 3). If you tried something else, then uninstall it, soft-reset and try my link.

Hi Chris,
I am using this patch and BTW the cab file 1.2 does everything what the manual settings do, but you can't click in a contact card to send a SMS, mails work, not SMS. I have discuseed this already with the author and he knows that it doesn't work.
Anyway, this is not a solution for my qustion. The new manila 2.5.1920xx has a great new contacts manager and I want to use it everywhere I can, because it is not affected by zenyee's SMS patch, it looks nicer. But apaart from making a shortcut I don't see how I can use it as a softkey in in the home screen or in the contacts (people) tab.

I'm confused about what you wrote (the bold part I highlighted). What do you mean it is "not" affected? I thought you said it is affected - i.e. the "send message" part of a contact card doesn't work. Am I just totally misunderstanding you?
In any case, you can change the left softkey in the home tab to open the Manila contacts list instead of it bringing up the phone pad. All it is is registry entries that need to be changed. But, if you have the sms patch installed, I assume you'll continue to have the same problem.
Let me know if you want to change the left softkey in the home tab anyway. I made a cab for it so that I wouldn't have to manually make all the changes every time I hard reset my phone to factory defaults.
EDIT:
Here is the cab that will make those registry changes for you.
This is the ALL PEOPLE Reg Value, restore it using any Registry editor

Let me explain what I mean using the two screen shots: one from the classic contacts manager, the other from the HTC contacts manager. If you apply the SMS patch and open a contact and click on "send message", nothing will happen. If you use the other contacts manager, you can open a contact and click on send message and it will open the windows messaging service.
Look at the answer from zenkinz, see [Tweak/App] Disabling HTC Messaging in manila 2.5 (version 1.2 Updated on 29th Sep), page 17

yes the send message from the contact will not work. It's due to a service I've disabled, and if I don't disable it, you'll not be able to send the SMS from the winmo app, so it's a catch 22 situation. I'm trying to work on a fix for that, but it's going to be tough.

Now what I was looking for is to replace the contacts manager in the contacts (people) tab. If you click now on "all people" it will open the "old" windows contacts manager, I would like that the new and better (and nicer) contacts manager would be opened.
Thanks anyway for the suggestion, but I don't want to replace the left soft key on the home screen.

Okay, so you want to keep the sms patch installed, but you want the "all people" softkey in the contacts tab to open the new Manila contacts list? And how do you then plan to open the WM contact list so that you can use the "send message" option in a contact? Do you plan on having a home tab quick link to WM contacts? I guess that would work.
I don't know where the settings are to the left softkey of the contacts tab and I don't know if that particular option is available in the registry just like it is for the home tab softkeys. I also looked into adding a quick link in the home tab, but I can't get it to open the manila contacts (only the WM contacts).
Sooo.... I think I'm out of ideas. Maybe you'll consider changing the left softkey in the home tab as you mentioned at the end of your second post (that's why I mentioned it as an option in the first place ). I don't know what you currently have set for that, but if it is still the "phone" then you can always access that by using a hardware key on the HD. Or maybe you have something in that softkey that you can place in a quick link instead.
I hate the stock messaging app. I don't really like Handcent, except that it has the "Iphone" look and makes text conversations go side to side. Is it difficult to drop another messaging app in as the stock messaging app? I would love to see more ROMs(mostly Ava because that is what I generally run) use another messaging app. Thanks for your time.

No its not hard. Thats why the rom devs don't do it. It lets everyone go choose what app they would like. Also some of the sms apps require the original messaging to still be installed... which makes it harder.
I would try go sms. LOTS of themes, and options.

I did not know that some messaging apps require the stock messaging app. I would think that when you have to programs doing the same thing, the phone is not being as efficient as possible. How can someone replace the stock messaging app with a new one? I don't want to use an app in conjunction with another app and disable the original, I want to get rid of the original.
Two ways....
Either break open the rom and delete out the apps you don't want before flashing. Or, install app you want then go in and delete (not disable) the original app using appropriate file manager program.
Hi everyone
Installed BlackIce just now. My first AOSP ROM and its not half bad to be honest
However I am having this problem which I never had on Sense ROM's. In the dialer when I go to the contacts tab there are some duplicate contacts. It's because the Facebook profile of those people doesnt link to the Google Contact. They always used to merge into one contact in Sense ROM's.
I have the Facebook app set to Sync All like I did in Sense ROM's. No settings have been changed.
How can I fix this?
You will have to go into your individual contacts, press edit, press menu, and select join. That will allow you to manually link your contacts from Sim card, Facebook, twitter google etc. You will have to do it for each one.
It's not quite as easy as sense but it will take care of the duplicates.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA App
For batch merging, go into People application, go into setting and choose remove duplicate. It will merge any of the contacts with exact same name.
Is there any good app out there for sending my business card info, or just sending my contact info to someone rather than having to type it all out. I am on the go alot and I plug peoples numbers in and would love to be able to just shoot them over my selected contact info through like SMS. But doesn't seem to be anything out there to do that. I found one app, but only info it will send is Name - Number - Email. I want something that will send all the info in the contact info of my phone, including my website etc... The app I found which is very limited and I don't like is called "Share Contacts Via SMS"
Thanks
bump it up
I use Handcent for many features including this one. You can attach a contact as a vCard or plain text, and you get a checkbox next to each item to include (numbers, emails, addresses, photo). Can't believe this isn't in the stock app!
If you do this a lot and the problem is just re-typing it, you can create and save a template with this info. In the stock SMS app, go to Menu->Settings->Templates. The icon in the upper right will let you create and save a template. Then when you are in the conversation/new message screen, Menu->Insert Template, pick the one you made.
But I would also recommend checking out handcent. I don't use this feature but it's a great app that packs a lot of good stuff.

This is in the stock Messaging app? If so, I don't see anything regarding templates.
Yeah, I don't see this template option in the stock messaging app. And I don't want to use handcent. Any other suggestions

Oh? I have a themed version of the stock app installed, though I stopped using it a while ago myself in favor of handcent. Perhaps the capability was added in by the person who themed it. I know his version of the dialer adds t9 dialing, but there's no note of added functionality on the mms link.
If you like or just don't mind the theme, the one I have is here.
Whenever I compose a new message in the stock Messaging app, when I enter in a name, I get not only their mobile number, but also their email, their house phone, their work, etc...but I only need to see their mobile. Is there any way to make this happen? I wouldn't like to remove the numbers permanently off my phone (some of them I cannot, they are from facebook).
As far as I can tell, there isn't a way to do this through the phone's options.
The only thing that comes close is this: when choosing names from the contacts list, you can specify a preferred number to use for messaging, but this only appears to apply to choosing names from your contacts. Typing in a name will still suggest all of that person's numbers.
Hmmm, ok. Is there a modification to the messaging app that I could use perhaps? Or, if I were to root my phone (maybe), is there some things I can mess with in the apk to disable this?
To be honest, I don't know. There might be, but I have little experience modifying the system apps.
I did a bit more searching on this issue and it appears there used to be such an option in Android 2.1 or 2.2, but it's missing in 2.3. According to the majority of forum posts I came across, the "solution" to this problem is to install a third-party messaging app like Handcent, which apparently does have an option to filter contacts so that only mobile numbers show up.
Also, I poked around in a decompiled version of Mms.apk (the messaging app) and there doesn't appear to be any easy way to change the current functionality. I think the solution lies in changing what suggestions the app returns when you start typing a name (so instead of returning all numbers/emails, it just returns numbers categorized as mobile), but I can't find what file contains that behavior. I'll keep looking, though.
Ok, thank you for looking. Keep in mind that this is a Samsung phone, and I think they install their own flavor of the MMS app. If you'd like, I can see if I can track down an APK (probably from a rooted Galaxy S II Skyrocket) and send it over to you.
And, If I need to use a different messaging app, is there a way to make it blend in as much as it can, like instead of seeing custom icons/names/ads, seeing something like the stock Messaging shortcut/app.
