does anyone know if they are stopping the nightlies and working on cm7? there haven't been any new ones for any model since the 17th
That's why they have stopped them. Cyanogen said that they are all working hard on Gingerbread, so it's only logical that they would stop all work on Froyo
do you think there's any more froyese to be made or is that a moot point as everything is just dumped into gingerbread? Especially now that drivers are completely different with gb?
Also I reckon once the full base is laid people will bring GB features back into froyo for the dream and other smaller devices. Or a mosh.

I'm sure most devs there will still be small updates being made to the current ROMs already out, like Enom for example. He usually releases stock ROMs with some modifications or themes, for the most part. I don't see him releasing a GB rom until the official rolls out.
Keep in mind Sense ROMs don't even factor into this. They are two different things.
Cyanogen on the other hand, won't make another update to CM6, at least for the G2 IMO. He always pushes to have the greatest and latest on our phones, hence his push for GB.
As to you mentioning people porting over features to Froyo, that may very well be true, but for the most part, I don't think much of that will happen. The Android reps from Google said that any phone that officially runs Froyo now, will run better on GB. I can only deduce that phones will run better running 2.3.
Now, while the G1 did not see a 2.2 update due to hardware requirements, the MT3G did see an official release, which is for the most part a G1 with more internal memory and lacks a keyboard. I hope that this will bring a great improvement to the device speed, and knowing Cyanogen, he will for sure bring it over to the G1.
Just my 2 cents.

I somewhat disagree with your point about CM6. Although all the devs are working very hard to bring GB to the G2, I don't believe Cyanogen or anyone else has said that there won't be another CM6 update. That doesn't mean they will but, imho, I think there may be at least one more update to CM6 for the G2. At least I hope so!
I do believe in the possibility of another experimental update coming to other devices maybe, but Cyanogen said himself on twitter to AndroidSpin that there will be no further stable releases for CM6 due to Gingerbread's release.
That's not to say that others of TeamDouche who manage other devices won't keep CM6 alive for a little while longer, at least.
Just got an EVO tonight, I would have liked to wait for 3D but I needed faster internet/phone asap since I started my new job.
I've been reading the forums, how to root, etc. the past couple of days, and am in the process of rooting. But there are just so many ROMs all which have there own pros/cons, so I was wondering if anyone had advice based on what I mainly want to use my phone for...
CM7 seems like the most popular, and I care mainly about stability, removing bloatware, and performance, care less about visual stuff. Plus it sounds like you can customize it with themes anyways.
But I've read threads where GPS/4G breaks which is what I care about the most.
I live in OC which has 4G, and that is the primary reason I upgraded from my old phone. 95% of the time this phone will be used for internet/games.
I was debating just going for a stock ROM, but not sure if benefits of a custom one outweighs stock ones.
Does anyone have advice on a stable ROM that improves performance and has little risk of breaking things like 4G? Or at least a few I can narrow down to?

Normally I would suggest MIUI, but since you need 4G either go with CM 7 or if you want to stick with a Sense based ROM I would suggest MikFroyo. Hope that helps and good luck with the new job.

If you want to keep your stock rom you can also just search root uninstaller on the market and get rid of any bloatware on the stock rom.
CM7 is the way to go friend...
Thanks for the replies. I thought I'd get the CM7 suggestions. I'm assuming RC4 is the version I want?
The only issue I had was that I saw in the known issues that some people were experiencing problems with 4G/GPS, so I wasn't sure if that was a widespread issue or not.
cm7 is an awesome ROM, dont get me wrong... if its your first rom troubleshooting may be a hassle because until it becomes an official release there will be bugs to deal with.
my suggestion would be look in the development thread and try a simple sense based rom first and read its threads (or even cm7 for that matter) to see what people are reporting about it.
*imho*
I switch between my own stock backup and CM7. CM7 is the way to go if you are looking for a different rom. It is basically stable. I have found nothing wrong with it.
MIKFROYO is great, but have been running Koni's Elite 111 with Honeycomb Dream theme for over a month...AWESOME...STABLE...FAST using netarchy 4.3.2 cfs sbc havs less
I was wondering this myself last week and what I found out is that once you see how easy it is to switch roms you'll be testing out a bunch of them and keep finding yourself returning to a particular one for one reason or another... and that's the one I stuck with. I ended up using Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo but I'm sure I'll be trying out a couple more today
Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS5. It's fast, stable and everything works and it's very customizable like any other Android device.

lol I know right. Basically my old company was cool with everything as long as I got my work done so I never really needed to use internet on my phone as much. Have a good gaming rig at home and was always at my desk at work.
My new job is with at a larger corp. (like 3,000 people) and has way more rules and regulations. My boss doesn't care and always goes on his phone or reads the paper in his freetime, but it's a company rule. So I wanted something that I could go online with
Anyways, I rooted and installed CM7 last night, it was quite easy. I haven't had any problems but I did like certain things with the stock Sense UI better. Maybe I'll try some other ROMs suggested here since it was so easy.
I gotta agree that, I've use MIUI, CM6 (not 7), fresh, and researched but not used MikFroyo, and my favorite right now is Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS5 w/o a doubt. It has everything you would want in a SENSE based ROM. Then, I'd also download the launcher pro that's right on that same thread, it adds a ton of additional customization that is great.
If you want a stock look but a bit faster and possibly better battery life check out Calkulins evio series 2 its on version 1.8,by far my favorite sense rom.
If you want aosp gb rom very stable really fast, gps works for me but with all gb aosp its different from user to user.Try salvage mod on version 1.1 though 1.2 is coming soon.
Both great roms.
I'm running the new CM7 Final, and I love it. I was using the nightlies and the RC's, and they were all great for a daily driver. Now CM7 Final is out? To me, this can't be beat.
It's fast, stable, has the features, and does everything I want. Let us know which one you decided to try out...

Look for a stock debloat ROM. Like it says, it's stock with a rooted stock kernel and all the bloat ware removed. Usually a dev tosses one out for every OTA. Doing a search for "debloat" in the dev forum should yield some results.

Thanks. My search yielded some results, but I'm actually looking for recommendations from peopole who have used them, pointing me to one or two really good stock roms with all the above said features. Considering that it's my sisters phone, and I live on the other side of the state from her, I won't be able to flash and play around with different ROMS for her. And she's not savy enough nor has the time to do this on her own.

I swear by Chingy's ROMs for the dInc and the Thunderbolt. I highly recommend Incredibly Re-engineered 2.3.1 and Ziggy's 4/10 kernel. It's built on EVO 4G framework, but it's the fastest, most reliable, feature rich ROM I know of. It's the same version of Sense that comes on the dInc so it works smoothly. Ziggy's 4/10 kernel makes it even faster and is completely reliable. There's newer Sense builds. There's gingerbread builds. If you're looking for stock-style Sense with absolutely ALL the BS removed you'll never use, that's as solid as the Rock of Gibraltar, this is the only ROM I would recommend. Lou's number 8 works great on it too, which it comes with.

Yep. You'll see 2.3.1, .2.3.2, and 2.4 and some older versions going back to 1.something (if they're still posted). 2.4 was a build he did that was completely odexed. The 2.3's are deodexed. I tried 2.4 and didn't find it quite as smooth as 2.3 with the mods I used on it, like the 4x5 workspace. The claim is odexed ROM's run smoother, but as soon as you boot the ROM, the entire ROM becomes odexed anyways, except odexed for your specific setup. It also seems more prone to rebooting.
I've followed the Synergy ROM for Tbolt for a while and that is a frankenstein project. It's a few guys that crank out nightlies with no end in sight, no goal of a final release, nor release candidates. It's highly experimental. That's not to say there aren't good builds. It's anybody's guess what you'll download on any particular night though. They have a lot of rabid fans, and they are pretty much all flash-a-holics. I don't call this a ROM you flash and drop in a FedEx box.
Gingersense has many good things said about it. I can't vouch for it as I've never used it. It is based on a leak. That implies a degree of incompleteness. Synergy is also a leak-based ROM. In my opinion, if you want to enjoy the richer experience of Sense 2.1, you can do that better on Froyo than Gingerbread. These are the Z ROMs. And you can get Incredibly Re-engineered in Z flavor as well. I set that up for my girlfriend and she ran it for about 2 months completely problem free.
This is just my opinion. Froyo is as solid as anything will ever be for that device. Chingy is still developing for that device and, from the looks of it, is possibly the most experienced dev on that device. I'm gonna be shipping mine across half way across the country in about 2 months and when I do I'm dropping it in the FedEx box exactly as I've described because I know that it's just gonna work, and work fast, month after month after month.
Try incrom 1.6 or liberation rom..my vote is for incrom
/Dinc
Close to stock? Skyraider 4.3. It has some awesome features added to it to make it a perfect stock replacement without deviating too far away from stock

Based on the posts I've read, is there really no official stable version of Gingerbread released for the Epic 4G, and are all the GB ROMs buggy?
And I thought that we would be working towards ICS for the Epic 4G...
I'm new at this, but I thought that Android being open-source means that it would be easier to hack and modify and less reliant on the carriers to release new OS updates. Have I gotten it wrong?

Android is by far the best medium for end users. But the major hold up is that the source code has been held out by samsung. There was a leak of the source code recently. The rom to look for is Cyanogen. These guys build it from the ground up with no source code. If you really want to try a gingerbread leak . This is a good one. He also has a 2.2 android that is complete no bugs. here is the link to gingerbread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190337
And the link to his 2.2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146630
At the moment I am using the beta cyanogen very close to completion. It is 2.3.7 and it runs smooth and fast. There are a few minor bugs like no 4g. The 4g was not a big deal for me as it only covered a small area for me.

Can tell you are new. Gingerbread is still only a leak. However kernel source was released for 2 days. If you look in Development and read the OPs on the ROMs find one based on the released source like the one with Heimdall in the title. They are stable with no reboots.

Yes... You've got it wrong. Hacking can only get you so far... Major version updates require source from the manufacturers.
If you want timely updates switch to iOS. With Android it's not *when* you're getting updates but *if* you're getting updates.

I'm currently running ACS' ICS beta rom. The ICS is just a launcher but its nifty. If you want a pretty stable eh17 rom w/o the ICS I used titanium to uninstall the launcher (and the other 2 launchers [beats me]) and used launcher pro plus. Makes for a stable gingy rom. I've also flashed the eh17 honeycomb explosion theme. Looks great and run awesome.
Supposedly nubernal fixes reboots... ill see as soon as I find time to flash
Lord Syrics Jr.
EPIC 4G
ACS ICS BETA v6
Eh17+ (soon nubernal)
There's always going to be bugs... Especially when devs start modifying what was most times just crap to begin with.
I strive to put out a stable ROM, but when you want to update something, something else may not always act as it did.
I'm in the midst of getting a second test version out of my ROM... Come back tonight and check it out. If you're into something semi-stock, then you'll like what i have to offer. =)

For the most part, "Android is open source" only applies to device manufacturers, and owners of Google-branded Nexus devices. The latter of which have (nearly) all platform source code available in Git repositories, including instructions for building a source-based ROM for them.
Third-party manufacturers do not release the majority of Android platform code for their devices. Some of this, like custom UI code, is not particularly relevant to us. But other of this, including proprietary kernel modules and userspace drivers for peripherals, is very much relevant. Not having the source to this makes getting full functionality out of source-based ROMs rather difficult. It doesn't help that Samsung's devices are "uniquely different" from HTC and others which makes porting source-based ROMs to them painful to begin with.
Ok... so in other words, to have a stable usable and relatively bug-free release of Android OS, we will need the carriers to release some official version for it?
Not necessarily. However it is often easier to support a new version of Android if the manufactuer provides an update to it.

No. I've been running GB forever now. Most of the issues were temp slip ups with roms or themes. The only pervasive one in all the leaked based roms is the reboots, which frankly I never found to be as big of a deal as many made it out to be. Our best guess is that it is sleep related, so in other words, it only happens when your phone is sitting untouched.
I had them quite a bit, but really not a big deal.
Install ACS ICS v6, and the nubernel kernel, and the reboots aren't an issue either.
At this point I couldn't care less if the official ever drops. (Not that I think it wont, it's just, also, IMHO, not nearly as large of a concern as some are making it.) To the extent I DO care, it's only because it will probably consolidate the efforts of the devs. Lots of work still being done on Froyo roms, and there's probably some hesitation on getting involved in any particular leak, because you never know when another leak will drop and make everything you're doing outdated.
Edit: This is anecdotal, but most of the "problems" people report are from people who seem to give gingerbread a shot for about 5 seconds. I'm willing to bet most of them restore data, or a titanium backup, from their froyo rom, then attribute any problems to gingerbread being buggy. It's not. It's fine. If anything a lot of the real not-just-whining outrage is over how GOOD it is. (AKA, the leaks are so solid, what's the hold up exactly)
Anyone who can help:
Although I really enjoyed this phone since it first came out, I have since moved on to many other phones. Unfortunately, my friend in another state 1400 miles away, has not. He is in Denver, and tells me there is still no 4g lte yet, which is the main reason he still has his evo 4g (Wifi Tether the wimax).
I live too far away from him now, and haven't touched evo 4g roms since the myn warm days. Anyways, he is really far behind on modems and rom, and since he is rooted with s-off, it should be simple enough to cloud share flashable zips for him to flash in recovery.
The issue is, going back to these forums is so confusing when you've moved on to another android phone and manufacturer. Does anyone know of a good solid, battery efficient, yet better than stock, stock themed rom, that looks mostly incognito to stock?
From my preliminary research, it looks like this phone never made it to a stable ICS, JB, or even AOSP / CM, stable meaning all native functions work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

"Flash all the ROMs!"
Seriously, try a few.
As a courtesy to you I will observe there are very few lightly themed ROMs based off of the latest OTA.
There are tons of choices based off of CM that get you very actively supported, stable, and fully functional builds based of of 2.3.7. But if you're looking for Sense ROMs based off of OTA 5.07, it's slim pickings.
Note 5.07 is not a really momentous change in the stock ROM experience, just a few "features" and "security" improvements that benefit Sprint more than the user really.
If you want a *huge* choice of stock based ROMs, you might want to relax your definition of what qualifies as the "latest" stock OTA version and select from the many excellent 4.67-based offerings instead (eg Classic). Or even 4.54/4.53. (eg MikG) Or ports based off of similar HTC phone builds from that era (eg myn's Synergy). That generation of ROMs marked the great golden age of Sense Evo ROM development.
Then again the latest OTA itself may just meet your needs - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671395
It does in fact meet all the criteria in the thread title and of course nothing looks more "incognito to stock" than stock. Good luck,
Wow, thanks for your input! I'm probably going to Dropbox him the latest OTA and modems, just so I don't have to hear him complain if anything doesn't work. When I had this phone, I always wanted cm in it with GPS and wimax, camera, etc, stable. I'll just get a Debloated and slightly tweaked one over to him.
My friend isn't a flashaholic like I am, and the last thing I want to do is be on the phone with him, walking through flashing a bunch of roms.
Thanks again!

Since the EVO lacks ICS/JB drivers for the FFC and WiMax (4G), you will want to stick with a Gingerbread ROM. If I had to recommend a ROM that is near stock but better, I would give +1 to MikG 3.11 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038967 with Ca1ne's Classic Sense SBC Kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557248 or SS Ultra http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28462129 which includes Ca1ne's Underworld SBC kernel.
I highly recommend Official BlakCM TSP 10.1.
It's 4.2 but so far it's the best rom I've found.
The big thing for me is that it hardly uses any juice when it's not in use!!
Leave it alone for a day & you'll only use about 10%.
