I am going to do a hard reset on my phone to try and get my headset buttons working again, but I want to know in advance what pains I will have to go through to get all my settings, apps, and data back afterward.
I have the free version of MyBackup, with which I have saved backup files to my SD card. After the reset do I just download this one app to reinstate my backed up data, or are there hoops to jump through first?
What other information is needed, passwords, server addresses, etc, that might need to added manually so I can even get the phone ready to download?
Your phone should be set to automatically back up certain data and settings to your microSD card, such as your bookmarks and Wi-Fi passwords.
Your phone backs up the following types of data and settings whenever there are new additions or changes:
* Text and multimedia messages
* Settings in the Messages application
* Web bookmarks
* Keyboard dictionary
* Settings in your phone that fall under these categories:
o Wireless & networks
o Sound & display
o Location
o Applications
o Date & time
o Language & keyboard - only the Locale setting
After you do a factory reset or upgrade the phone software, your phone will restart and let you restore the saved data and settings in your storage card back to your phone.
Turning automatic backup on or off
1. From the Home screen, press MENU, and then tap Settings.
2. Scroll down the screen, and then tap Privacy > Back up my data & settings.
3. Select or clear the Back up my data & settings check box to turn automatic backup on or off.
You can also restore apps from the Marketplace by logging into your linked Google Account and installing each one separately.
MyBackup Pro is only useful if you are rooted to backup all your apk's and data settings.

Sorry to be a noob but I cant think of a valid way to backup all my contacts on my phone and also any other data stored on the phone memory such as email account.
I have a problem whereby when my phone is set to vibrate, it doesn't when receiving a text message and I have tried all settings to make it, but to no avail, I have been advised to reset to factory settings to restore this back to normal.
Any ideas people?
Your contacts should automatically sync to the Google servers if I'm not mistaken?
How do you mean? auto sync? are you reffering to the Sync mode on PC, or just by using the phone and using the internet google would take a copy?
Desire does auto backups for specific things, not for contacts though (if you are not syncing)
To backup your contacts manually go to People - > Menu ->Import/Export -> Export to SD card
Hi sorry to revive an old thread, but how do you then reinstall the contacts after a factory reset?
Edit: Ignore that, People - menu - import export - import from sd card!
Hi everyone, i am very annoyed because everytime i flash a new rom google restores all of my settings and apps from my previous phone (hd2) and i haven't found a way to disable this feature, can anyone help, btw the feature backup/restore data from google accont doesen't work
you
You'd better change you email xP
After flashing a new ROM and when prompted to sign in to Google, skip this part for now (there is normally a skip function, or you can try pressing home or back button).
From there go to your "Settings">"Privacy" and Un-check "Back up my data" and "Automatic Restore".
Then you are free to go to "Settings">"Accounts & Sync">"Add Google Account", to get your Contacts, Gmail and Browser synced.
The scheme with the signing in after unchecking seems to be working but i'm still wondering how to make the information on the google servers go away

i was getting mad every time my phone started downloading all those app on its own thank god i have a solution now
Does it still download every app when you first sync up? I thought it just loaded contacts and calender/docs and probably drive stuff now.
The last time I did a full wipe it didn't do this for me. That would be a nightmare because every app I have ever downloaded is in my market library when I got to play.google.com on my laptop. If anything I would like to trim that down and remove selective apps. There are some that are just rubbish now that I would never use. Just downloaded to try for example.
it would be really nice if yo could manage your backup data, select what yo want to restore like wireless settings or wallpapers or ringtones
Although you can not get to actually see the data, have a look HERE On the point of disabling and deleting the back ups through ADB command prompt

I know this is an old thread, but here is some info from the docs about "bmgr"
http://developer.android.com/tools/help/bmgr.html
Warning! When backup is disabled, the current backup transport will explicitly wipe the entire active data set from its backend storage. This is so that when a user says they do not want their data backed up, the Backup Manager respects that wish. No further data will be saved from the device, and no restore operations will be possible, unless the Backup Manager is re-enabled (either through Settings or through the above bmgr command).
Click to collapse
This implies disabling backup deletes all backed up files on the server.
Below is a thread that I original started in the Desire section.... Thought it might help some One-X users who are starting out.
Here is the official user manual as written by the app developer: http://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/titanium-backup-kb/titanium-backup-user-guide.html
Hi, Call me blind but i could not find any guides on XDA...strange soo maybe someone will correct me (my wife does it all the time!). As you can see by the way i have uploaded the photo screen shots...I'm also a No0b but trying to learn and share as well.
Here is my attempt at a No0b's guide to using basic Titanium features of backing up and restoring. Let's face it this program does so many things but me, for one, I just use the basic functions, so if there are some "Super users" out there please come forward and share your knowledge!
Getting started, I'm using the PRO version so if you are only using the FREE version your guide may be different.
From the user "Preferences" (Menu/Preferences) make sure that you change the "Max backup history to more than 1" this will allow you to have more than one back up version before the app overwrites the previous backup.... useful if you upgrade an app then realise that it was not such a good idea.
Another tip is that if you have a certain app that you want to retain the backup and user data for then you can simple go the the main app window, select the "Backup / Restore" button then tap on the app that you want to permanently keep a back up of, then tap on one of the backups, then select "Protect this backup". now this version of your back up will always be kept and never over written.
BACKING UP
Lets assume that you have installed Titanium Back up (PRO) and that you now need to make your first system and user apps back up. Then open the app and then press the icon at the top right of screen which looks like a page with a tick mark on it, then choose "Backup all user data + system data" from the list and hit the "RUN" button to the left of it. (Image #1). For backing up you are now done. (Note that if you are a frequent ROM flasher then you might only want to ever back up the USER APPS and data as restoring System apps across ROM is the main culprit of errors from using TItanium Backup. If you decide only to make user app back up then follow this by selecting the "Backup all system data" and on the next screen select the "Deselect all" button, next go through the list of system apps and select only the green coloured items (see below the list of system apps/settings that I recommend you ONLY restore across ROMS).
RESTORING after ROM change
After you have done a full wipe and then installed a new ROM you now want to RESTORE your applications and all of their user data, things like settings and user information. Titanium back up is an excellent tool for this but you MUST be careful not to restore any SYSTEM apps or data otherwise you can run in to trouble and it will cause many "FC's". According the the Official TB user guide: Again, if you’re restoring them from a different phone/ROM, enable the “System data migration” option (found under Menu/Preferences and half way down the screen list to the "Restoration Settings" section).
Then open the app and then press the icon at the top right of screen which looks like a page with a tick mark on it, then select BATCH and then scroll down to the RESTORE section and select "Restore missing apps with data". by default the "App+Data" will be checked, leave this option as is for this BATCH task (Image #3). Or you can review the list and manually Deselect one by one any apps that you did not want to restore on this occasion.
Or you can review the list and manually Deselect one by one any apps that you did not want to restore on this occasion. Or if you only want to restore a few of the apps then "Deselect All" and then manually add each app that you want to restore when you have completed your selections then hit the "Run the batch operation" button at the top. (Image #4).
It will take some time for the BATCH to run and re install all of your user installed apps. after the batch has completed then you are ready to install just a few of the other GREEN coloured items from the main menu.
This time from the main application window select the top middle "Backup / Restore" button. (Image #5). Now BE CAREFUL here, i ONLY RESTORE the following options and have never had any problems HOWEVER if you try to restore Accounts and Settings and some other green coloured items you can run in to trouble with FC's....you have been warned but test this out for yourself and report back if you have any success:
What to RESTORE safely:
Bluetooth pairings (User data only)
[Calandar] (User data only)
[Alarms] Clock (User data only)
[Desktop] HTC Sense (User data only) - NOTE it must be the same version as the previous ROM check the currently installed version against your last back up version number, if they match then you can restore and it will put back ALL your old desktop short cuts and screens (but NOT any of your widgets)....very handy one. (Image #12 & #13)
[Bookmarks] (User data only)
[User Dict HTC] (User data only)
[User Dict] (User data only)
Wi-Fi Access Points (User data only)
What NOT to Restore
Accounts
Application Widgets
[Contacts/Cal...]
Country, Language, Time zone
[SMS/MMS/APN...]
[E-Mail Accounts]
[Playlists]
[SMS/MMS Pref....]
[Voicemail]
[Wallpaper/Se...]
[Settings/Blu...]
You will now need to REBOOT your device for the system items to take effect.
Now a little tip that i use, as you will be updating your apps and settings will change almost daily why not set up the Schedule feature so that your apps and also your changed settings data are all backed up every night?
Here is how:
Open the application then select the top right button "Schedules" (Images #22-#24)
now enable the first option and select "Redo backups for modified data" select every day and also change the time to during the nighttime or other suitable time for you when you are not going to be using your phone.
Select the second option and change it to "Backup all new apps & newer versions" and again select the best time for yourself.
That's it, you are done so now you can rest assured that every night your current apps and user data will be backed up and ready for the next days flashing of new ROM's.
And one final tip that i use.........when setting up a ROM from scratch, do not sign in to the Google account until AFTER you have RESTORED all the user Apps with Titanium as the Market will try to restore all your apps from your Market user history, which is OK but will conflict with your BATCH RESTORE using TItanium Backup.
YOu should also make a copy of your installed version of Titanium Backup App to allow you to restore it on the new ROM without having to go to the Market for the reason detailed above. (Folder: /data/app/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup-1.apk)
enjoy.

I am hoping to get some help from you guys, I have Tmobile Samsung Note 2 stock version without root most updated firmware (June update). My problem: my contacts are disappearing from time to time, so in order to show up again, I have to reboot. It shows up but disappears in a while. So I called tmobile with the problem and they provided me with the following solution. However, it didn't help and I am tired of loosing contacts from time to time. Your help and guidelines would be HIGHLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Wipe cache partition to clear system memory
If the phone is not working correctly, you may need to reset it. Whereas a hard reset deletes all your information, clearing the system cache does not erase any personal data or settings.
To wipe the cache partition, follow these steps:
Remove the battery and then re-insert it.
Press and hold the Volume up key, the Home (center) key and Power key simultaneously for 10 seconds.
The Android system recovery menu will appear.
Use the Volume up and down keys to select "wipe cache partition."
Press the Power key to select.
Use the Volume up and down key to select "reboot system now."
Press the Power key to reboot.
Prepare for a master reset and back up data on Android
created by Michael McEwan on Sep 2, 2011 11:50 AM, last modified by Michael McEwan on Dec 13, 2012 10:08 AM
Version 14
Available Externallyhttp://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2521
Understanding the Issue
A master reset is sometimes called a factory data reset or a hardware reset (hard reset for short).
A master reset restores the phone to its original factory settings, as if it is new again. As part of this process, it deletes the information stored on the device. Information stored on the memory card or synchronized to a Google account is usually saved. However, some devices give the option to erase information from the memory card. You must back up any data that you could lose. Some devices include a built in back up option or settings. Review the device Specs & features or Common procedures for any back up applications that are available.
Help & How to
Turn off Automatic Backup
Android can automatically back up your settings. However, if you automatically back up and restore your settings when you perform a reset, it can cause any problems to return. T-Mobile recommends that you turn off this feature. To turn it off, follow these steps:
From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
Tap Settings.
Tap Privacy.
Tap the Back up my settings check box to clear it.
Tap OK.
Make sure there is no check mark in the Back up my settings check box.
Record & Sync Accounts
Make sure you know the Google account on the device, you remember the password, and that you back up your data.
From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
Tap Settings.
Tap Accounts & sync.
Look for a Google aaccount that is synchronized here, as well as any other email addresses. Write down these accounts, so that you can use them after the master reset.
Note: If you do not know your password, go to https://www.google.com/accounts/recovery from a computer.
Touch Sync all button to back up your synchronized data.
After the reset, sync the phone to your accounts to restore contacts and other things stored on them.
Contacts
Make sure your contacts are backed up, and not just stored in your phone memory:
From the Home screen, tap the All apps button.
Tap Contacts or People.
Press the Menu key.
Tap View or Display options.
View the number next to Phone( ).
If it says Phone (0), then you have zero contacts stored on the phone.
You backed up all your contacts when you synchronized your Google, T-Mobile Contacts Backup, and Exchange ActiveSync accounts. Skip to the next set of steps.
If it says Phone (1) or higher, then you have contacts that will be lost unless you back them up. You may use one of the following:
Export contacts:
Press the Back key to return to the Contacts list.
Press the Menu key.
Tap Import/Export.
Tap Export to SD card.
Note: Only Android 2.1 and newer can back up to the SD card. For older versions of Android, you can select Export to SIM card, but this may lose contact information. Alternately, you can download a non-T-Mobile application in the Play Store that can back up your contacts. T-Mobile does not support these applications, but you can contact the developer for help. You may try: MyBackup.
After the reset, you can access this menu to import your contacts from the SD card.
Move contacts from Phone memory to Gmail or MobileLife.
Back up contacts to an app, such as Dropbox or other third-party options.
From a computer go to Gmail.com, and enter your contacts.
Calendar
Calendar items are saved on the servers of Google or your Exchange account. After the sync instructions above, you can check they are backed up:
From a computer, access where your calendar items are stored: www.google.com/calendar or your Micrsoft Outlook calendar.
Make sure all your calendar items appear on Google or Outlook.
Email
Email is stored on the servers of the email provider, not on the device. Downloaded email attachments are stored on the memory card. You do not need to back it up.
Check for any saved drafts of email. Send them before the reset, because they may be erased.
Text Messages (SMS) & Picture Messages (MMS)
Android does not back up your text messages (SMS) and picture messages (MMS).
Note: There are non-T-Mobile applications in the Play Store that can back up your messages. T-Mobile does not support these applications, but you can contact the developer for help. You may try SMS Backup (save messages on your Gmail account) or SMS Backup and Restore (save messages to the memory card).
It is recommended that you do NOT restore the messages after the reset. Having many messages can cause phone problems.
Applications
Play Store
Free applications
Play Store
Paid applications
Amazon Appstore
All applications
Free apps do not appear in the Play Store automatically. So, you either need to:
Before the reset, write down all your free application names, so you can search for them them in the Play Store later.
OR
After the reset, on a computer, go to: https://market.android.com/https://play.google.com/store
Click My Android Apps.
Click the names of your applications, and click the Install button.
Paid applications are already saved to your Google account. So, you can:
After the reset, open Play Store.
Press the Menu key.
Tap My Apps.
Tap your apps that show as Purchased to install them.
If you use Amazon Appstore, it saves all your free and paid Amazon downloads on your account. So, you can:
After the reset, install the Amazon Appstore app again.
Log in to your Amazon account.
Follow the prompts to reinstall the apps.
If the app stored data (save games, high scores, memos, preferences, etc.) on:
The memory card, then the data will be saved.
The phone memory, then the data will be lost.
Note: There are non-T-Mobile applications on the Play Store that can back up your app data. T-Mobile does not support these applications, but you can contact the developer for help. You can try: App Backup & Restore.
Media
Android saves your media (pictures, photos, videos, music) on the memory card. It will be saved.
Note: The Samsung Vibrant is different and can store media on the internal memory. To move the files to the SD card, tap Applications, Files, tap and hold the file or folder you want to move, tap Move, the folder you want it in, and Move Here. The LG G2x also has more internal space to store media, but a master reset does not delete it.
Memory card
Some Android devices give you the option to erase the contents of the memory card. In most cases, this is not necessary. We advise you not to erase the memory card unless it is completely necessary, because it contains most of your information.
You may choose to erase the memory card if you think that an application has stored corrupted information on it. To back up your memory card, follow these steps:
Connect your phone to a computer with a USB cable.
When the computer shows a Removable disk popup, select Open folder to view files.
Note: If the computer does not show the phone as a drive, then pull down the Notification bar and change the USB connection type to Disk drive.
Copy all the files from your memory card to a folder on your computer.
After the reset, you can do the same thing to move them back. Do not copy any files back to the memory card if you suspect they are corrupted, or the problems will return.
Master reset
A master reset restores the original factory settings and may erase all downloaded content, including ringtones, images, programs, and contacts stored in the internal memory. It does not erase data stored on the SIM card or memory card (if available).
To perform a hard reset, follow these steps:
Back up all necessary data that is on the internal memory.
From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
Tap Settings.
Scroll to and tap Back up and reset.
Tap Factory data reset.
Tap Reset device.
Tap Delete all.
");
See if anyone can help me with my findings; so as my contacts were disappearing, one time accidently I went into to task manager, cleared my Rom in rom manager and all my contacts came back. So, didn't have to reboot anymore. Though, from time to time my contacts still disappears and it has to with some apps in my rom, just cannot figure this out. If anyone can share some thoughts would be useful. Thanks

Do you have automatic restore active in settings? Do you have your contacts hosted in Outlook or another similar external source?

I want to factory reset my phone but in the past I have backed up my settings, app, call history, sms and such to my google drive. But after factory resetting and logging into my gmail account and setting the phone up. My settings aren't back to what they were, apps wont download automatically from the store, my messages and call history are all gone.
How do I factory reset and have all my stuff return to how they were? Is there something I need to do in the setup process?
This thread helps to force your pixel to back up things to the cloud. It's all done through the Shell. In my experience it has saved my settings, pixel launcher layout and apps installed. Once connected to a WiFi network from a clean install it should let you pick from a list of apps that you want to restore. You won't have the app data, but the settings and everything else should restore to the point of your last back up. If you want app data, that's a different story.

I pick restore phone, then I choose the option that says I don't have a phone to transfer data from. Then I pick the option that says restore from the cloud.
