DamageControl 3.2.2.1 Apps2SD - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All,
I have a rooted Evo with DamageControl's 3.2.2.1 rom. I know it has apps2sd built into the OS, yet I cannot seem to get this working at all. Would anyone be kind enough who has this OS and a2sd working to make a quick and dirty guide? Ihave tried partitioning via Rom Manager and then turning it on...tried a few things. Any help is appreciated.

I would like some help with this as well. Have tried all the same steps, just can't seem to figure it out.
Sent from Ye olde Evo

Im sure someone out there knows how to do this!

Got this from another forum:
Did you patition it on the phone? Did you upgrade EXT2 to EXT3? If the answer to either or both of these, that could be the problem.
Type this in order:
cd c:\android-sdk-windows\tools (or wherever you have installed the sdk)
adb remount
adb shell
busybox --install /system/xbin
mkdir /system/sd
a2sd
exit (wait until its done doing its thing, you should see # when its done)
restart your phone after the prompt is done spewing and you're all set.

Personally I don't think there's any need for this since the EVO has hugeee internal memory. This was used mostly on older phones.

Thanks I'll try it when I get home

correct, most roms using this will only use app2sd if you have the ext partition on the sdcard, otherwise it defaults to the normal app storage

Busybox compile enabling Swapper on the Hero...

http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/291345/installing-busybox/
I custom compiled Busybox and detailed how to put it on your Hero, which enables Swapper (I'm using it now with a swap partition).
Enjoy!

I have a few quick questions being a newby... lol
Where do we run the above commands, recovery mode or from the command prompt while the hero is switched on???
Im having a problem ither way, it says permission denied.... :-( and I am rooted 100% so im pretty sure that is not the case...
When I write adb remount, it says "remount failed: operation not permitted"
The push command works,
but then the last command adb shell /system/xbin/busybox --install -s /system/xbin/" gives me a permission denied...
Also do we have to have out sd card formated with a fat32, ext2, and swap partition for this to work??
Any help is appreciated!
Did you root using my method?

Im trying to get yours to work, and also get appstosd to work to speed things up a little... any ideas??

How to check if Apps2SD has been installed correctly...

The following information is for those who are still unsure of whether Apps2SD has been installed and if it is working correctly after root.
Open a Terminal Editor on your phone (I currently use ConnectBot, which is available for download via the Android Marketplace, comes with hotkeys, and it's free, link <here>).
When you have the client open, type "su" to gain super user access, and then hit enter. Now type "ls -l /data" and hit enter. You should see a few lines, a couple of which should read on the far right column:
dalvik-cache -> /system/sd/dalvik-cache
app-private -> /system/sd/app-private
app -> /system/sd/app
Notice the -> indicating symlinks and the 'sd'
You can also run: busybox df -h to check the /system/sd that the folder is being used
If this output is visible to you, then Apps2SD is working properly and you have installed it correctly. You will notice that by checking Menu > Settings > SD & phone storage, there is still some internal memory going down due to cache, other data, etc, but the main apps all go on the SD card given the above result. I currently have 29 apps installed (including Google Earth, which is 22.1 MB in size itself) and my internal memory currently shows 119MB of available space.
You can perform more extensive checks by executing the following command:
ls /system/sd/app (this will list all the apps which you have installed to the SD card)
If you prefer to run it from a PC with your phone connected, then this can also be checked via ADB by installing the relevant Android SDK for your OS. Downloads for SDK versions, link <here>.
Alternatively, you can use the script (written by theboxman from MoDaCo.com), which you can run via GScript Lite to test if Apps2SD is working correctly, link <here>.
how about unlock?
thank you for the info. btw, i havent seen in the forum if there a way to unlock the Desire form a certain network. any idea? sorry i know its the wrong place to ask and post this.
Hi Mastoid,
Could you tell me how exactly to run this from PC?
I've got the whole SDK installed but no idea what i have to do...open a prompt or something? Please inform as i'd really like to check.
You need to download the Android SDK and also Java.
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/widget/jdk6.jsp
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Then open a command prompt in Windows, plug in your Desire (your phone does not need to be in hboot/fastboot to access adb shell).
1) Open a command prompt on your computer and cd to your adb tools directory (it will be wherever you extracted the sdk; ie, c:\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools
2) In that window enter the following commands:
adb shell
su
ls -l /data
this should list the top 2 items as:
lrwxrwxrwx root root 2010-04-28 22:54 app-private -> /system/sd/app-private
lrwxrwxrwx root root 2010-04-28 22:54 app -> /system/sd/app
ls -l /system/sd/app (will list apps on installed to your SD Card)
Now, for final proof, type:
busybox df -h

I posted a thread recently showing how to check if Apps2SD has been installed correctly and is working:

How to setup App2SD?
Anyone got a clear, easy guide on getting it working? Can you install it on the standard rooted ROM from MoDaCo? Do you need to have it cooked into a ROM?
A video or something would help but I'm interested in getting it setup incase I need to get a load of apps
î did your think i i use better terminal pro
app => system/sd/app
dalvik cache => /system/sd/dalvik cache
app private => /system/sd/ app private
so how can i have around 40mb left only?
Re: Question about APP2SD.....if anyone can answer
How many apps have you installed?
How have you partitioned your sd card? i.e. swap size?, ext2 size?
Have you applied the Apps2SD update zip?
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
ive got maybe 40/50apps
i partitionned , 66 cache 1280m EXT 2=> EXT3
and no update....i dont need with the latest modaco R2 custom rom do i?
im afraid to reboot everything again, spent the whole day to isntall everything
30mb left :x
Re: Question about APP2SD.....if anyone can answer
I would suggest that you apply the dalvik-cache update zip and that should hopefully fix it. Note that you should only allocate 512MB to 1024MB (max) for the ext2 size and, you do not require a swap of 66MB, it is not recommended. I have my swap set to 0MB, ext2 set to 512MB which is more than enough space for apps, and rest to FAT32.
Search google for the "Apps2SD mini guide" (found via MoDaCo website) click the link and scroll down to the bottom of page one, the update zip file is available there.

is it bad? (64 swap)
i calculated, i installed 170m worth of app. And i have "43" left (started at 138)
so , somewhere, APP2SD is working...but not verry effective
Re: Question about APP2SD.....if anyone can answer
I think it is working, run the command (ls /system/sd/app) in terminal editor in the link i posted earlier and check what apps are stored to the sd card. Also, download and install "cachecleaner" from the marketplace (free) to free up some cache space.

Re: Question about APP2SD.....if anyone can answer
You have something wrong. I have also this Rom with about 53 apps and have still 134MB free.
Sent from my HTC Desire
i installed the update.zip
i went from 38 to 53mb
then i use cache cleaner , i now have 60....
and still 170m worth of app...
so is my app2sd working in half?
Re: Question about APP2SD.....if anyone can answer
I ran the command in Su, and only the 2 app ones said sd, my dalvic cache didn't say SD card. I ran the suggested update fix but had bootloop, do I need to wipe anything first? I'm using evil 1. 0 Rom and thought it came pre app2sd. . .
Id like to get dalvic moved. . .
Thanks

[GUIDE] Persistent Temp Root for G2 to SD Card

Problem: Changes to the system partition are lost when Linux flushes the disk cache: http://pastebin.com/cm75Z9UA
These instructions are a workaround to provide temp root like normal plus persistence because /system /data and /cache are partitions on your SD card. This lets you reboot and even factory reset, while being able to easily restore your settings and such by re-rooting and mounting your SD card partitions back over the internal partitions.
Prerequisites:
SD card partitioned with four partitions:
6GB as fat (for your data, can be bigger or small depending on your card size)
400MB ext3 for /system
1.3GB ext3 for /data
200MB ext3 for /cache
On the phone, enable "USB debugging" in Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development
On a PC with the Android SDK tools (adb) installed and working:
adb push Superuser.apk /data/local
adb push busybox /data/local
adb push rage /data/local
adb push resume /data/local
adb push root /data/local
adb push rsync /data/local
adb push setup /data/local
adb push su /data/local
adb install Term.apk
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/busybox /data/local/rage /data/local/setup /data/local/resume /data/local/rsync /data/local/root
On the phone, open "Terminal Emulator" and type:
/data/local/rage
Wait for it to say "[+] Forked NNNN childs." then press the back button.
Open "Terminal Emulator" again and it should force close.
Open it one more time and the prompt should display "#". Then type:
/data/local/root
/data/local/setup
You may need to re-root after it reloads the GUI, but then it will stick. setup is a script that mounts your SD card partitions and copies the existing. It should only be run once unless you want to erase what you have there previously. This step wont work if you SD card is not partitioned properly.
On future power-ons, run this after temp-root instead of setup:
/data/local/resume
and you should get your Android back how it was.
is it suppose to scan through all apps on phone then reboot
Thanks muchly, I'll try this when my G2 arrives.
I have a question about this method. It looks to me that what setup does is copy the entire system, data, and cache to the SD card. Then, when you run resume, it uses rsync to bring the main system (in the onboard flash) up to date from the SDcard version, and then any changes, even if not actually written to the main system partition due to the HTC copy protection, get written to the sdcard copy of the system. Very clever (if I'm reading this write, otherwise, still clever, but me not so clever as I mis-understood).
The question is this: Are there any glitches or instabilities generated by suddenly changing the system files after the OS is already booted? Do I have to make sure to do this before I begin using my phone after boot or risk making changes that I will then loose when I run resume?
Thanks again for the work putting this together!
Sheep
Sheep, you understand almost completely. Setup does copy the existing data from the internal phone memory to the SD card. However, it then (like resume) doesn't copy anything back, it just mounts the system, data, and cache partitions from the SD card on top of the internal ones.
I had issues with the internal memory reverting back after I make changes to it. It seemed to happen over a short time, or was triggered by things like mounting the SD card to a computer.
I've been using this for about 24 hours with no problems. I've done a couple fresh boots and ran resume. But I didn't test the instructions from scratch, so if anyone tests and finds a problem, let me know!
Any performance hit because of running from SD?
I haven't really noticed any.
How does this impact battery life?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Can't say, I've had my phone hooked up most of the time through adb looking for root. Just did this for fun and because I was sick of re-rooting all the time.
looks interesting I'll try it out tomorrow

Use your G1 to partition the card.
Brad
You can also connect your phone to a Linux computer (a LiveCD would be fine) and use gparted or fdisk. Don't forget to backup the contents of your card first!

There are no roms available yet any ways, so to a non dev, non cook like me, the Root is pretty much useless
I'd read that the currently available root was good until a reboot, then I saw this thread that made rerooting after a reboot much easier. Since then I've seen some posts that seem to indicate that a root may spontaneously disappear even without rebooting. Is this the case, some permissions may be lost even if you don't reboot?
I was ready to pull the trigger on this permanent-temporary root until I read that. I'd like to be able to import my old wpa_supplicant.conf file and get my corp ipsec vpn working. I'd also like to be able to get wifi-tether working (although I rarely use it), but if root won't stay 100% until a reboot, then I'm not going to bother.

Not true. I'm not a dev or a cook, but there are things that you can make the phone do with root besides adding a theme or ROM.
wifi tether
ipsec vpn
backups
etc...

With temp root on the internal system partition, writes would revert back after certain things (after mounting the sd card to a computer through the phone and disconnecting it, I'd always loose root). When running /system from an sd card, no writes can be reverted because none are made, so I've never had to re-root.

Apps2SD on HTC Hero with default 2.1 ROM

What can i do if i want to keep my warranty?

no. you need root. If you like your warranty, and your phone gets broken in some way while rooting, you can just run the official RUU and return it back to stock state, and your provider will never know.

You can't enable app2sd without root, and if I am not mistaken, it's the rooting the will void your warranty....
I don't think you can mess with anything at the system level without voiding your warranty, which makes sense.
But, Andyt95 is right, if you mess something up, the RRU should restore it to the unrooted state.
I rooted it using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253
I followed the first part up to the fourth point (i think recovery img is needed to flash, not to root, am i wrong?)
But, now?
ya recovery image needs when you want to flash something in your mobile . But to root your phone it don't need recovery
there are many apps out there which can give you root & most of them are compatible for Hero
Yes i rooted it
But what to do next to install apps on sd?
I can't find a tutorial, my mistake?

The problem is, its not a simple update, it needs support in the kernel ramdisk, busybox installed and some scripts.
Usually I don't like to recommend the Darktremor app2sd, because its a bit too bloated in my eyes, and I don't like things which are so complicated I can't understand them (and I have tried, but he has so much script for a relatively simple task...).
Anyway in this case, I think its your only bet.
DO A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE YOU TRY ANYTHING - ESPECIALLY THIS!
EDIT: Taking another look, even it (the Darktremor app2sd) does not seem to fix the kernel's ramdisk. You might want to test it after a nandroid backup on the odd chance I am wrong (i.e. if your original ROM does run the init.d scripts - mine did not). I am afraid if I am right, the only way you can keep the original ROM and enable app2sd, is if you unpack the kernel ramdisk and edit the init.rc to run the init.d scripts - which is a bit more complicated than it sounds, but not that hard if you have the proper background....

why stock though? have you considered that villainrom 13 is just like stock but better and has apps2sd? it's a full HTC sense 2.1 rom but rooted with apps2sd and a few small additions to ensure it runs as fast as possible and gives as much room as possible and runs a custom kernel ***
and you can revert by flashing an RUU which is super easy to do (I've done it before for warranty reasons) and the RUU (stock rom) works exactly the same, in fact IS exactly the same except for the features you're asking for.
***(which is pretty much required for apps2sd unless you want to hack it for a while and know how to do it yourself (it's a lot to ask the devs here to tell you everything you need to do if you're not a kernel developer already imho and even then there isn't a guarantee you wont' mess up your phone's stock rom).

Hi I am trying to find the step by step guide about how to setup Apps2SD working. But having tough time. I have done this with my HD2 but cant find much help for Hero.

Next I am looking to partition the card from recovery, but what should be the swap size?
Once partitioned I will try flashing Villainrom 13 ROM.
Thanks

Swap does not seem to work well for the hero, therefore most ROMs will not enable it and I use 0 for the swap size when partitioning. If you still prefer to reserve room for it use something like 32 or 64.

System memory is still reduced with app2sd, since the /data/data folder is not moved to the SD.
Assuming you have adb working, check these two commands:
Code:
adb shell df -h
adb shell ls -ld /data/app
If you think you still have a problem please post the result of these two commands.

well, I actually meant connecting the device w/ a USB cable to your computer and then from a command prompt (i.e. start -> run -> "cmd") using the "adb.exe" utility that comes with the android SDK (under the tools folder)....
You can run the same commands in a terminal windows just without the "adb shell":
Code:
df -h
ls -ld /data/app
Only problem is that then it you can't copy paste your result here.
for the "df -h" command take note of the mount of your sdcard which should start like this line:
Code:
/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 720.9M 506.3M 178.0M 74% /sd-ext
I would assume that for you the mount point (last value) would be /system/sd.
next check the "ls -ld /data/app" and make sure it is linked to the same location, in my case it is:

well, I actually meant connecting the device w/ a USB cable to your computer and then from a command prompt (i.e. start -> run -> "cmd") using the "adb.exe" utility that comes with the android SDK (under the tools folder)....
Code:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 Apr 20 09:59 /data/app -> /sd-ext/app

Well, you really do *not* have app2sd enabled (I am sorry for my previous disbelief but I have seen many users in the past which only thought they did not have app2sd enabled).
From your previous posts I understand you are using VR13, so either ask on the VR13 thread how to enable app2sd (you can post the above as proof it is not working for you), or change to a ROM with more "stable" app2sd....

A2SD+ Rom & Force install into internal memory

Hey all. Can't post in the development forum therefore I'll post here.
I have a Leedroid 2.5 A2SD+ rom but this should apply to all A2SD roms.
What I want to do is to force install the software onto the internal memory. I've tried googling and playing around with it myself without any luck. I've ran ADB in recovery and I can't even push the app into "/data/app" since it directs it to "system/sd/app" which is my ext partition.
Is there anyway to do this or I am out of luck ? The reason behind this is that my Handcent is glitching and there is a delay in notifications (vibrate > sound> LED) This started only after I install LeeDroid A2SD+ rom so I have a feeling that my SD card is slowing things down.
Hopefully someone has an idea about this.
Have you tried spareparts, install it, you'll have an option where to install apps, then set it on internal, may work..
I do have Spareparts, it already comes with LeeDroid but I can't see any options that relate to what you've mentioned.

There are 2 SpareParts, use the one in the link. The second option is app2sd, click on it and choose internal.
Hey, I've tried it but it doesnt seem to work.It still installs onto the SDcard. Hmm...i am stumped, cuz there is gotta be a way to force install an app onto internal memory..
hi,
there is some commando would managed this
=> adb shell pm setInstallLocation 1
more info into leedroid wiki =>

hope this help
Grrr.... Can't figure it out.
Nothing seems to work. I've tried the guide on the Leedroid Wiki with no luck, I've tried Titanium Backup thing that you have mentioned in the other thread. Doesn't work either. The only thing I don't get is how to remount the sd-ext partition, because in the comments of the Leedroid Wiki, that's what made it work for one of the users. I've tried remounting in CWM(ClockWorksMod) but that didn't work.
SpareParts essentially does that command setInstallLocation 1 but in GUI mod. I am lost.
I've tried using that "pm" command to install onto internal flash since there are commands that apparently allow you too but it still installs onto the SDcard. I am just wondering, is there anyway to temproraly disable App2SD script ?
hi,
if you can't get sorted like this, maybe Darktremor app2sd script wil help you, never tried as i m using data++ rom but here is the complete thread... hope for you that will help.
therez a long explication of how it s working and how to apply this on your current rom.
be sure to get root rights

hoep this help
Thanks for your help. I took a different route by pushing the APK onto the /system partition. I had 20mb left so it was enough for an app.
Thanks for all the help))
