I have Swype ver 6826 installed (fixed-by-JD) that I picked up a couple of months ago on the Nexus forums. Generally it works ok, however when entering text in the default browser, Swype slows down so that you have to pause between each word as you wait for it to enter the text you have swyped. Highly annoying!
At first I thought this was Swype's fault, but I have now tested it in Steel and DolphinHD and text entry is absolutely fine & quick in those browsers. So what gives? What has HTC done to the default browser that cripples/slows Swype down?
I prefer the default browser over Steel or Dolphin, so would rather fix it if poss, than change browsers.
One final question - can someone with a rooted Desire please advise me if this problem still exists on a vanilla(ish) Android build (either 2.1 or 2.2) that doesn't have all the Sense crap integrated into it? Also, is the default browser on the Desire the same as vanilla 2.1 Android - or if not, what are the differences?
I am THIS close to rooting anyway, since I'm getting hacked off with having had no space for new apps pretty much since the first week I got the phone. If rooting fixes this issue as well then I'm gonna go ahead and do it!

Hi there,
I've got a problem with non-Sense roms:
with none of them works the browser text reflow. I've tried open desire, setrom and defrost and in none of them does it work.
The funny thing is that I have no problems with Senseroms.
I wiped everything several times and tried it even with dolphin but always the same result: nothing.
What could i've done wrong?

ps sry for my bad english
Pretty sure it's a HTC Sense thing, not an Android thing.
you need to double tap on the text once zoomed for it to reflow. its a froyo feature.
Is there no way that it reflows when I do pinch to zoom?
Cyanogen has it in his tree. You have to enable it first though.
But this has always been the Android way: Double-tap to reflow, pinch to zoom without reflowing.
HTC modified their Sense browser to always reflow (which can be quite irritating sometimes).
This
is
development
Thanks for the answers. So cyanogen Is my only chance then? And how Do i enable the reflow there?
Ah thank you very much for the tip with the cyanogen mod. Finally everything's the way I like it
Dunno how many other people share my feelings, but I love the AOSP/CM6 browser more than HTC's browser. If one of you kind developers wouldn't mind, I'd love to see the AOSP or CM6 browser ported to Sense or installable on Sense.
So far what I've tried is simply renaming HTC's browser to Browser.apk.bak, and then moving CM6's Browser.apk to my phone. I then rebooted and tried to run it, but it force closed instantly. I've attached the logcat for anyone that is interested.
I'm gonna see if I can install the apk.
edit: no bueno; even after installing it, it force closes when opening.
I've been trying to do the exact opposite but haven't gotten any replies from my posts. I love cm6 but would rather have the htc browser. Good luck
i'm searching for the same thing found a possible that show's u how to do it but it just F/C on me too will be searching too
What I liked about the HTC browser was that you could pinch it. I'm surprised that Google includes this functionality in Android/Froyo but not in their own browser.
So like the 2nd poster, I'd like to see a pinchable (e.g. HTC) browser in CM6.
Is it just me, or does entering text (say, on forums) totally suck in the ICS browser? This is my first Android device so I can't speak of earlier versions, but its painfully bad here. Not only is it extremely laggy, even in portrait mode, but if you try to move the cursor through large blocks of text, it often jumps around, disappears, and generally refuses to cooperate. Earlier I resorted to copying my entire message into an email just so I could correct a single word, because the cursor absolutely refused to let me select anywhere near it. I've tried a variety of browsers and keyboards and none of them really solve this at all.
I understand there's software like Tapatalk to alleviate this, but that's not he point. Not every forum has Tapatalk support, and it doesn't really solve the issue of text entry in the browser anyway.
Anyone running 4.0.4 want to chime in and let us know if these issues have been addressed since 4.0.3? Thanks...
Not just you, but I don't know if we're some of the few or the many...
I'm stock (rooted) 4.0.2 CDMA and I hoped it had just been a problem with the 3rd-party keyboard I was using. Seemed to get a little better with the stock keyboard, but not nearly better enough. I'm also hoping this is fixed in the 4.0.4 update.
Text entry all over the place is horrible. I had to turn off spelling correction or else I'd get massive stutters in portrait mode in the Messaging and Gmail app.
This disappointed me cause it takes away the red squiggly under misspelled words that I was looking forward to.
But specifically talking about the browser, I too notice large amount of lag and stuttering. Maybe even moreso than my 2 year old Nexus One. I also find the little blue anchor used to move the cursor WAY too small, especially for such a large screen. This combination results in an awful time searching using the browser. Stock, 4.0.1. btw. Pretty sad that a phone like this has such fundamental flaws (small but still important). Here's to hoping 4.0.4 fixes this!
I can't tell how it was on 4.0.2 or 3 but I'm on 4.0.4 now and text entry is great! I just tested it right now to see how it was and had no problems. Try Opera mobile to see if it alleviates your woes.

Flashed 4.0.4 earlier, seems exactly the same. Actually the whole rom performs about the same to me as a 4.0.3 ROM with some performance tweaks. But I didn't play with it much. I did test the text entry in the browser and found no improvement over 4.0.3.
I tried multiple browsers including Opera. Honestly opera is so laggy and jerky to scroll that I didn't even make it to my forum to test text entry before I uninstalled it. I would be miserable replacing the ics browser with that, even despite the text entry problems.
Firefox and nighlty don't exhibit the same problems as the stock browser, but have their own set of quirks and bugs that make text entry equally stupid. Webkit browsers like Dolphin and ICS Browser+ also behave exactly the same as the stock browser.
I also tried a different keyboard to try to alleviate the lag. It helped but not enough to make me use it full time.
tl;dr stock has some serious issues, and so far 3rd party stuff is worse (in my opinion).
I don't understand why the browser seems to think that we don't need predictive text when replying to posts in the XDA forums. I know there's Tapatalk, but I like the browser.
It was my understanding that auto correct was added back in the browser in 4.0.3, no? Not sure about the jump-around bug though, google really needs to fix that.

It absolutely was fixed, but in doing so the keyboard became extremely laggy. :/
Edit: By the way, I forgot to mention another bug with text entry in the browser. When you're zoomed in and typing, the zoom doesn't follow the cursor correctly. You will often start typing off screen before it "catches up" and jumps to the next line.

The lag is present pretty much anywhere on 4.0.3's browser. There's not much lag in 4.0.2, but there's also no predictive text/spell check in most (read:not ALL) forms on sites.
The cursor bug is only present in large blocks of text.
I've had these issues on every android device be ever had. It just sucks a web text entry boxes.
Just wanted to throw this out there. All of these problems are non-existant on the new Chrome Beta. Its the first browser I like enough to take me away from the stock Browser
But I really like the stock browser's icon. Nothing Nova couldn't solve!
Hello,
I've been a long time lurker and I finally flashed my first HTC Desire Z rom a few days ago.
The problem I've been having is that the user agent setting in all of my browsers don't work like they used to when I was still running stock Gingerbread (I'm running the latest G-Lite now).
I used to be able to get to any desktop site using Dolphin HD, and now I can't. But, Opera is still able to access the desktop version of ESPN.com. I know espn is one of those super picky sites regarding the user agent/mobile browser thing, but I used to be able to access the full site no problem. I've tried nearly every browser on the market (xScope, Skyfire, Boat Browser, Miren, stock browser about:debug thing, Firefox) and nothing works except Opera. I've played around with numerous user agent strings with no luck. What the hell is up with that?
Is it because of the super lightweight rom I chose? I know it's a minor problem, but I'd really love some help here. And, I really don't like Opera's bloatedness and Flash performance. Thanks!
Try maxthon browser. I find it's the best one out of them all. Should work fine.
Sent from my DZ.
Tried Maxthon. It's very nice and quick but it has the same problem as the others. What makes Opera so special over every other browser? I dunno, thanks anyway.
Hi!
Quite often when I have one or two tabs open on the stock web browser (I'm on a rooted G3 16GB, stock rom) and I switch between tabs or maybe do something in another app and then return to the browser, the page has disappeared from the phone's memory and it's reloaded from the internet. Does anyone else have this problem? I don't believe it's an issue with low RAM, since I'm not running too many programs at a time, and quite often have only one or two tabs on the browser. It's really frustrating to wait every time when returning to the browser, since on my other Android devices the web pages keep open even when the browser isn't the active app.

Ive noticed this too, when you click on the tab (sometimes even just going between 2 tabs) the pages get reloaded.
I have same problem. I still didn't find any solution. It appears that non-stock apps manage to do better, but even if I use Chrome Beta (which I love and find to be the fastest), it behaves the same as it's stock counterpart.
I found other thing... G3 doesnt perform consistently. For example I run sunspider benchmark and:
- 1 day ~1300ms
- 2 day ~550ms (can keep few tabs for sometime)
- 3 day ~1000ms
- 4 day ~1300ms
Those results are unacceptable on current flagship All browsers tend to give similar results btw. What can be done? I think that's it's the problem on firmware side as non google/lg browser can keep tabs.
sad
Hi, i have the same issue on my G3, and everytime i unlock the screen, it reloads the web page, also in Opera browser and stock browser, i find this verry annoying. Not having this problem on the ex G2.
Maybe the announced update to Android 5.0 it will solve this.
