help selecting rom please - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Need a bit of help here.. android newbie. So i've done the 1st part of toasts root and I can load any rom I want.. the only problem is I don't get 4g on any of them. If I flash back to the pc36img.zip file or whatever it is and I turn on 4g I instantly get it.. but any other roms I don't. Do I have to update the radio file associated with a specific rom or what? or am I doing something else wrong. If someone could recommend a 2.1 rom with some battery savings and a radio that it will definitely work with it let me know.
Thanks

Post this in Q and A forums not the dev forum

I used toasts method, rooted and unlocked nand, then flashed Flipz latest stock rooted rom, then flashed toats latest radio, Not the 2.0 radio i think it was 1.0.053 or something. I have full functionality including 4g. I then used root explorer to remove apk's I dont use.

I don't know if I can post links yet, but I know of a guide from Geek For Me. In their FAQ they have a simple guide specifically for the Evo. Sorry I couldn't give you the exact link.
Edit, nevermind, thought I was in another thread. Sorry. See the post below and remember you have to reboot after each radio flash. If you're doing radio and wimax, you must reboot after each and not try to do them both at once.
its super easy, all you have to do is put the zip on your sd card and reboot into recovery. Once in recovery, choose the flash from sd card (or similar option depending on your recovery) and confirm! Thats it, no wiping or anything else is necessary for radio updates
yeah i read that geek thing and it looks really easy. i thought i found a thread earlier with a step by step procedure do it without out bricking your phone.
i may have been thinking about something else and got a little worried. damn just reading to much stuff on this today.. lol
thanks guys

No problem. I've done the same thing before. Reading all the threads on this site can overwhelm your brain with new information that's easy to forget bits. Glad to help.
I lost my 4g using unrevoked, and got a replacement phone so i am overly cautious right now. This phone has zero OTA's done on it
Now everything was done via toast 1+2 and I can do all nandroid backup etc...
I have baseband 1.39.00.05.31 and wimax 24722(verified by adb shell wimax mtd) running root safe stock rom 1.32.651.1
Currently I am not positive that running the radio and wimax updates will work with my baseband as it appears that 1.47 is required to do any updates from my readings on here. (warnings not to install unless 1.47 is in)
I have tried to sift through the Dev section of the forum but I am on info overload I suppose.
I have the 2.05.00.06.10 radio file, and both wimax files 25043R04 and 25641 R1 ready to install but I seek some verification that I can put these in without breaking 4g, losing functionality. I was also seeking an order of install so I don't mess up a working phone with only a sub par battery life (and I dont see wireless n active).
I would like to go over and give damage control or Fresh a whirl but I need the latest radios and wimax to make it work, but I am very paranoid to lose another phone.
Anyone have a link, or can direct me to where I need to RTFM for clarification?
Thanks folks!
Seriously? You already answered your own question. We're not going to make a decision for you.
Seriously!
And I failed to mention I have the engineering HBOOT
So if I understand correctly I need to OTA to 1.47.651.1 baseband, and then apply the radio updates, or is there an alternate 1.47.651.1 baseband update I should be using?
As an example should I be following
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
which is whitslack "How to start over: Fully rooted stock 1.47.651.1 in one shot (no adb!)"?
The newest radio and wimax come with the newest OTA if you're stock. They will only work on an rooted ROM if it is based on the newest OTA.
Again, you are not going to be spoon fed information that is readily available if you spend more than 2 minutes reading the posts on here. Find out what you have on your phone and you will answer your own questions. I could give you fish but I'd rather hand you a fishing pole.

help unlocking NAND after using unrevoked

I'm a noob at Android hacking and wanted to root my evo After a few questions to one of my friends, he pointed me towards unrevoked3. Now am stuckand don't now how to unlock the NAND and its driving me crazy. I want to be able to use roms such as damage control. Please help. Im compleatly lost.
I would ask your friend, don't think many here use unrevoked, we used the complete method from toast.
Also read through the posts in the Dev wiki.
I just rooted and unlocked last night...had a few issues. Should be around most of the evening. Where are you and what did you do?
Last night I used that unrEVOked3.1 software and then moved on to unlocking. You will need to ADB installed to do it the way I did it. This is a component of the Andoroid SDK. (You can find that from the google android site.) It is complicated and I got through it because I am old enough to have actually worked in DOS back when there were dinosaurs.
It's not impossible, there are instructions out there...but it will take effort. Hate to point you away from xda...'cause LOTs of good work here...but I followed the unlockr.com tutorial for unlocking nand.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-unlock-nand-on-the-htc-evo-4g/
There were a couple issues where su couldn't find the sdcard. I even did lists and saw it, but the commands failed at start. Took a mix of unplugging usb and replugging and mounting and just charging....not sure what fixed it...LOL. But I got the commands to run eventually.

You can use Rom Manager app to install CM7. In fact Rom Manager is included in CM7 Rom. Honestly I think Rom Manager was made mostly for CM Roms. Make sure you wipe data, cache and davlik before going to CM from another Rom. I never flash through Rom Manager app and always flash manually from recovery, but a lot of people do flash through Rom Manager. Good Luck.
Also just to clarify(someone correct me if I'm wrong),
I think if you used the unrevoked3 app from this thread Unrevoked to root your EVO that it also nand unlocks it too. The thread doesn't state it, but the app has been updated to work with the latest hboot, so it should work on all Evo's right now. I could be wrong, but I have used the latest Unrevoked to root all of the Evo's that I have rooted and have never had any problems with backups, restores and flashing Rom's.
and i got titanium back up for my apps but not sure how to use it i got idea of hot to use it and how can tell if my nand is unlocked or not

power off your phone then go into bootloader using power+vol. down..if you see s-off at the top the youre unlocked
If you are s-off, but still having problems with some root apps, you need to install busybox. You can do this from the "problems?" button in the bottom right of the overview screen in Titanium Backup. Then choose "get busybox".

[Q] Help an idiot? Please

Guys, I'm lost. I search. I read (my eyes are bleeding), but unfortunatley I don't understand the terms, so it's all greek to me.
I have a stock EVO with 2.1 The only thing I have done is added Unrevoked3 to bring back my ability to use wifi tethering.
I would now like to get to 2.2. I've been saying "NO" to the OTA update because I know nobody has rooted 2.2 yet.
That said, it seems that because I haven't upgraded I can pull root, apply 2.2, keep root and keep wifi tethering.
I'm wondering if someone can provide step by step instructions on how to do this given a stock phone with only unrevoked3 on it so far.
I know - search... I'm so lost though. I want to be as close to stock as possible when I'm finished, and ideally I'd like to be able to go back and apply the stock OTA or HTC update if I want to, even if I lose root.
Can anyone help? Step by step?
Thank you!
If you rooted 2.1, then you can upgrade to 2.2.
There are probably 10 rooted ROMs in this forum now. Pick the one you like and flash it. Just be sure it says it is rooted.
You must be FULLY ROOTED for most roms on here. Unrevoked3 is not a full root.
Look into Simpleroot to get a full NAND unlock and root and then you can boot into the custom recovery and flash as you please.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=706411
Try using this method and flashing a custom rom should give you root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745420
Sounds like I'm hearing 2 things. Do I need to do a full root (BTW, I'm on an old mac, so I can't use simpleroot), or can I do as xHausx says and just install over the unrevoked3 "root"?
Recommendations on the ROM's closest to stock Froyo?
Will I be updating the radio at the same time?
Sorry - newbie
Go with xHausx's method then.
I'm running Baked Snack 1.3, it's a solid ROM. You'll be playing with many roms over the next couple weeks.
Here's a stock rooted 2.2

Okay, so I am downloading the one Grouse recommended. At the same time I'm doing a backup via rom manager and have done a titanium backup already.
From here is it as easy as transferring the .zip file to my Sd card and then loading it via rom manager???
Again, remember I'm on unrevoked3 and everything else is stock.
Will I have to update any radios, etc?
Thanks so much - what a wonderful resource this site is.

this will not work. you need to have "full" root and be NAND unlocked to flash roms. Unrevoked3 is not full root as stated above. you may however try UnrevokedForever. just find the appropriate thread and follow the instructions if it is compatible with a mac, dont remember right off the top of my head.
Okay, t3project... explain the thread in post #4 here.
I'm learning here - not trying to be a smartass. It just looks like it WILL work... is this not the case?
Okay, so I've updated with no problems. I'm on Froyo now, I retained wifi tether. All is good with the world.
Except Pandora. I get the poor quality and the closing when nav or phone call.
Is there a fix for this yet? Also, now that I'm running a custom ROM I would assume I can't take any updates that google would push out. I can still update apps, but if this problem with Pandora is with the OS am I screwed?
Thanks,

I didn't use unrevoked so I am not really sure if the method I linked to earlier works or not, but it definitely wouldn't hurt to use one of the other methods just to make sure you have full root and the NAND unlocked.

You've got to use the search button man... Theres a fix for it out there somewhere
I've found the "fix" even before I tried to install 2.2. The problem is that I don't have a PC to work off of.
Can this editing of the file be done by transferring the file via BT to my mac, editing in text editor, and sending back via BT???
Thanks

Probably with a stock rooted rom but if you want to do other things such as overclock, uncap the fps, custom kernels and whatnot you'll need to be full nand unlocked.

Radio Updates with ROM's?

So I have had the EVO since launch day. Came from using a Blackberry. I really must say the EVO rocks. Only complaint thus far is the battery life as I am a heavy phone user. Sedio here I come.
Anyway I used Unrevoked to root my phone about a week after I bought it. I know Unrevoked is not a real root per say, but it did what I needed, allowed me access to using wireless teather. I have kept everything stock for the most part. I have not accepted any updates what so ever since the day I used Unrevoked. I now feel its time to become a real EVO user and root my phone the right way. I am going to use simple root as it seems to be a easy way for me to root as I am still new to this Android thing and dont really want to brick my phone.
I have been researching the ROM's (thanks to all the great dev's out there and their hard work!!!)
Still not sure which one I will try once I root my phone as there are lots to choose from, but I am sure I will find one that rocks.
Now for my question regarding the radio updates.
Do most ROM's come with the radio updates already or is this something I have update in addition to installing a new ROM?
If I have to update the radio's where can I find the latest and greatest updates at?
I guess I am going to have this same question about the Kernal's as well. Do most ROM's come with the Kernal needed or will I have to update as well?
Thanks for the help guys. In the meanwhile I will continue to read and try to make use of the search tool on the site.
Thanks
Ralhaz
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
Just flash from recovery. Roms dont include them as far as I know. Flashing a new rom wont overwrite the radio either. Most roms come with the stock HTC kernel. Some use one of netarchy's or king's kernels. Just flash those over the rom. Flashing new custom roms will overwrite your current kernel with the one included in the rom.
Just a warning: When you flash a radio, the phone will reboot a couple of times before it's done. Just let it go until you're at the lock screen waiting to swipe in. Never pull the battery if you think it is stuck. Otherwise, there's really not much danger in flashing new ROMs, radios, or kernels. Just make your backup before you do anything, wipe from recovery before you flash ROMs, and do your flashing from recovery, don't mess with ROM Manager.
Thanks for the input guys. I will attempt to root and flash a ROM maybe later tonight or tomorrow.
So just so I am clear, most ROM's will have the Kernal needed so not much to worry about there.
But what about the Radio updates? Are they included with the ROM's? or do I have do update them separate?
If I do have to update them separate where can I find the latest and greatest at?
Thanks again for all your help
Ralhaz
Unrevoked 3 is real root and gives nand unlocked, add forever and you're good to go with any ROM you like.

BTW if you simple root you will loose the PRI you have and get 1.34

Roms will not include the latest radios. There is a thread in the development forum that has all of the latest 3g and Wimax radios.

Thank so much for the info. Got the updated radio files.
I guess my last question would be this.
If I simple root and my PRI goes down to 1.34 is this a problem?
Not sure I understand what the PRI is all about just yet.
Thanks

[Q] Need help rooting!

Hey xda community,
my friend recently got an evo and he asked me if i can root it for him.
I have a rooted evo too but i have a different version. he got the new 0004 version of the evo while mines is the 0003. i rooted mine using that whole rageagasintthecage method, and idk if i can root his like that.
my question is what is the best way to achieve full root on the new 0004 versions.
I know google could probably answer this but i rather have someone from the community help me out.
The most popular way is via unrevoked. Unless something has changed, it should root all versions.

anyone? is it a good guide?
http://unrevoked.com/#evo
Go there, download the install
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
Go there and install the hboot drivers
Lastly, install htc sync, then uninstall the program. On your phone go into settings > applications > development > check usb debugging.
After you've done that, connect your phone to your pc in charge only, then run the unrevoked reflash package. It'll take about 5 minutes and reboot about 2 times, let it run the full course.
I plan on removing unrevoked so that I can receive the latest update and then re-root. I only use wireless tethering and trying to get OpenVPN. Other than that, I don't use other root capabilities. Is this a bad idea (updating OTA)?
You can just update your rom, flash to a sense rom, update your prl and flash back. I don't recommend accepting the official OTA can you can lose your root.
I have just successfully rooted my evo4g just now. Before I can flash a rom, what are the other things I must do? (nand unlock/radio/pri/prl/etc)??

Well you should be nand unlocked if you used unrevoked. Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485 to get the radio, ect, you can use the combo flash if you like. Just make sure to backup your current rom, then flash,

Definitely do a backup, and then move the backup to your computer for safekeeping. The person before me provided the correct link for the radio upgrades.
After that, you should be set to flash. (Assuming you've picked out a ROM that suites your wants and needs.)

Just use this

works like a champ for all hardware versions & you'll be rooted in 30 minutes.

See my post on the front page. but unrevoked does give you nand unlock. The earlier versions didn't, which you had to flash the unforever zip to get the nand unlock, but its been merged into the flash.
And after you root, you hold vol+down while turning the phone on, and you go to the bootloader, select recovery. You'll be on clockworkmod recovery, then you just select backup from backup/restore menu.

Thanks TR. I'll try that and see how it goes. I'm ultimately trying to get OpenVPN running and having problems getting the tun.ko file for my build. I don't have linux to compile my own for 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e, so I thought I'd try to update in the interim.‎

is there a way to remove sprints bloatware? or would that only be through flashing?

You can remove the sprint apps by going into titanium backup, And depending on the rom, you will get speed, and kernels help with battery life. Generally, AOSP is faster cuz it doesn't have all the sprint crap in it.
any links to the next process after rooting/nand unlocked is done? I've read about people losing their 4g keys? how do i ensure this wont happen?
kernel/radio/rom flashing? anyone got rom recommendations?
