4G reconnecting issue? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if anyone else has this issue. I think most people know by now the issue we all ran into with 4G after we flashed roms with the new OTA update. The 4G would just be stuck at "scanning...." and never connect.
Anyways, I did manage to fix the 4G issue using bigbiff's steps here. So now the 4G connects with no issues but there's one problem: when I leave 4G area or go indoors and come back into 4G area it won't reconnect by itself. I have to either turn on and off 4G or hit the "Scan" button.
If anyone can give me any insight or ideas as to what's going on that would be very awesome.

I have the same problem, and I have seen at least one other person mention this problem (it's kind of hard to search the forum for this problem, since all you get are the folks having problems connecting to 4G).
This started after the OTA update. If the 4G signal fades out, the 4G status remains in "scanning" even in known 4G areas. I made one 4G change to try and fix this - I changed the wimax_idle_sleep time from 10 to 300 as was recommended in the 4G problem posts.
I am wondering if anyone knows what the other 4G settings do and if any of them would fix the problem. So far the only way I know to reconnect to 4G is to turn the radio off and on.

I posted this in another forum, the more frequented one. I thought it was more applicable there since this might be an issue concerning rooting, custom ROMs, home ROM flashing, or all the above. Until I see a wave of non-rooted users complaining about this, I think Sprint has found a gotcha for rooters and flashers. Input from some ROM developers would be nice if they happen to visit this forum.
I can enter a 4g area, turn on 4g, and connect. When I leave a 4g area, turn off 4g, then turn 4g back on before re-entering 4g area and enter a 4g area, it is stuck scanning. It never attaches to the 4g network in the area I entered. If I turn 4g off and on while in 4g area, it will connect.
Are unrooted stock users having these problems? It is a real let down and PITA. Is 4g working perfectly in all scenarios for any rooted user?

I also think it's related to one of the images we have to flash to get root, as the behavior is definitely different than stock. I noticed this after I first rooted / nand unlocked my phone, but before I applied the new radio & wimax. On my phone, however, 4G does eventually come back up. It might take 5 minutes or more, but it does eventually reconnect.
I'm not sure that it's really a bug though. I actually prefer this behavior because it results in fewer dropped connections when switching between 3G and 4G. For streaming apps (Rhapsody, Pandora, Youtube, etc) the frequent switching forces you to have to start the stream over. I think it might have been an attempt to increase the stability of the data connection at the expense of having a 4G connection less of the time. Could be a hold over from one of the older engineering builds we had to flash during the rooting process? It's strange that the behavior persists after flashing a new radio/wimax, but maybe it's actually controlled elsewhere.

Add me to the list. This is from my post about 20 hours ago which hasn't received any bites:
I have seen various issues reported:
1) 4g won't turn on. PERIOD.
2) 4g turns on but only scans - never connects.
3) 3g/4g alternate so there is never a stable connection.
4) 4g turns on and connects but after a while disconnects and won't reconnect until it is toggled on/off with the widget or check box in settings.
I used to have #3 until I did whitslack's "start over" method and now I have #4. I've changed my wimax idle sleep time to 300 in ##data# and verified a good MAC so other than the 2 evo last resort method I think I've tried everything other than the above.
So, does anyone know if renaming/moving macaddress.tree.xml is for my issue #4? Or does anyone know a specific fix for #4?
If it matters I rooted with toast 1/2 and am still on the rooted stock ROM from whitslack's "start over" method.

Some Observations:
I've noticed the following differences since the OTA (with Root-from the "How to Start over with 1.47.651.1" thread):
1. The 4G reconnection problem.
2. Bluetooth no longer auto connects when my headset is in range.
3. I have been getting "Error 67 Data Connection Lost" errors. This error blocks me from 3G data connectivity for a few minutes. During this time, "Mobile Networks" shows "Turning On" in the settings.
I suspect it is one of the following:
a. There is still a radio problem with the rooted OTA
b. the PRI that has not been updated since the root crack matters with this release.
c. Sprint/HTC introduced some new bugs.
d. Some hardware settings need to be tweaked (like the timeout that folks are changing from 10 to 300).
So we need to figure out who is having this problem, and under what circumstances.
I did however note something very interesting. I have repeated this 4 times today. If the 4G disconnects and stays in scanning, if you then place a call it will immediately reconnect. This leads me to believe that it is indeed a setting, and a voice call triggers it (if you recall in May, Sprint was saying that they hope to have Simultaneous Voice and 4G - so there is probably some code to trigger 4G at this point).
What do you folks think.

I would take C out because I have not read complaints by non-rooted users.
The latest PRI is 1.40_003. Right?
Who can bring this over? ROM developers say those features are not part of what they do. If not them, then who?

I think being rooted currently sucks. One of EVO's greatest strengths, connectivity, has been crippled.

sw99, did you try the move the xml file with your mac address solution? If so, I guess it didn't make any difference.

I will try making a call tomorrow when this happens and report back.

I had the same problem pre-root.
I wont be able to help anybody too much with technical stuff 'cause I'm basically a non-technical guy, but I've had the same problem with wimax dropping & not reconnecting ever since the OTA update (1.47....). I went to a Sprint store & the guy just went cross eyed, so it may not be too common.
In my case the connection will SOMETIMES come back on its own with a really strong signal, but rarely.
I just rooted tonight so I have no idea if it's worse or not, but I'll find out tomorrow, eh?
I've also had difficulty with Bluetooth automatically connecting, but I have a new stereo so I don't know where the issue lies.

Nope. Didn't touch the xml file, as my 4G was connecting, and the fix was for 4G just scanning.
I still think we can tweak the WIMAX settings and make it come back faster.

Well at least its faster than toggling the 4G radio - just find a friend with a mobile phone so you don't waste any minutes.

Just dial your own number which takes you to voice mail and shouldn't waste minutes. I'll probably put a direct dial shortcut on my home screen until a solution comes along. Not that I'm worried about wasting my regular minutes....I used 29 of 450 on my last bill!

I can now confirm that moving/deleting the xml file does nothing for our problem. At least not on my EVO.

So, I've been looking at the WIMAX settings (using ##DATA# and my MSL).
There are some settings that look like they could be effecting this problem. Be forewarned, however, that some of the values preset are not considered "valid" when you make a change (leading me to add credence to my theory that HTC/Sprint goofed), so I'm hoping a nandroid backup will recover them. Open each parameter and deleting the values, gives you a popup of the valid values and units.
Here is what I tried so far:
wimax_idle_sleep(s) changed from 10 to 300 seconds - effect: little to none.
wimax_scan_attempt_timeout(s) changed from 1 to 20 seconds - effect: little to none. (note only 5-300 are valid values after this change).
Other parameters that look interesting and their default values:
Wimax_scan_retry(s): 300 Seconds
Wimax_entry_delays(s): 300 seconds
wimax_exit_delay(s): 2 seconds
idle_mode_timer: 60 seconds
Standby Time: 10 Minutes
handoff Threshold: 6
Anyone willing to mess with these (at the risk of losing Wimax, of course)?

That is one place I'm not going to mess around. I saw a stern warning about that recently on the dev forum.

[Q] 4G turning on and off, slowing down phone

So I wanted to try out different kernels yesterday. I'm rooted using the Stock ROM.
My phone was already running netanarchy's 4.1.9.1 with no problems, but I wanted to try out King's kernel BFS #8 as well as #6. I did a cache and dalvik wipe prior to each flash. In the end, I deemed that I personally like netanarchy's kernels more, so I switched back to 4.1.9.1.
However, now my 4G keeps turning on and off. This is causing my phone to significantly lag in intervals correlating with the on and off of the 4G toggle. Is it possible that flashing different kernels somehow borked my wimax radio?
Any help is much appreciated.
Is it anything like I described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8052344
I'm having this issue and I never even rooted my phone. Note my latest reply that I did a hard reset on one of the evo's and now the 4g radio hangs on "turning on..." when I try to turn it on. Still seeing that now. Considering doing the unrevoked 3.2 to root it and try to fix it since sprint is clueless on the issue.
Yea, it is similar to your issue. I found your thread after I posted mine. I tried updating to the latest Wimax update found on XDA and that helped somewhat.
My 4G stays on, scans, and says connecting to Sprint network. However, it never successfully connects. I now believe I have the dreaded MAC address problem and am now trying to fix it.
I can't even see my 4G MAC address because I can't get the 4G radio to turn on. How else can I check whether my keys are screwed up (without being rooted)?
try dialing ##3282# and select view mode. Go to WiMax and look under NIA. That should have the MAC address.
If it does not match what is listed on your box, then your MAC addresses do not match.

You gotta be rooted to do that. As for your keys getting hammered, the key issue arises on rooted phones after a bad flash, or corrupted radio file. More than likely your keys are fine. Let me ask you this, have you previously have 4G working, and it just stopped working? Or you now just tried to use it, and it's not working?

Yes, it used to work. I picked up signal around the boston area a month or two ago (before boston officially had 4g). I can't remember whether I used 4g successfully after the 2.2 upgrade. I was part of the group that did the .3 leaked 2.2 update and then took the .3 to .6 update OTA. I have never rooted this phone.

There is no WiMax option when I do this. I think the WiMax radio needs to be switched on to see this. But I can't get the radio to turn on.
I've been using alogcat to try to debug the issue. I see this error come up about 90 seconds after trying to enable 4G (this is the same time the "turning on..." changes to "Unable to start 4g"):
E/WimaxStateTracker( 104): Failed to load Wimax driver -=>wl.release
I haven't been able to find any information about what this might mean.
same problem here; ever since running unrevoked 3 the other day, my evo 4g keeps turning 4G on and off by itself, and, wont let me stop it from doing that..
its killing my battery with its constant searching, and I cant find any sort of "tweak" that will allow me to just shut it off or leave it on; the widgets dont do it, so I cant figure out how to stop it..
was working fine before this..
On stock 2.2 froyo, stock kernel...
any ideas?
thanks!

Ok you may have hammered your 4G then. I've heard of a couple of people who took the leaked update, and fouled up their 4G. I would suggest you backup your stuff then run the latest RUU to see if that clears things up with the wimax driver not loading. If not take the phone to Sprint.

i read the thread you started about this issue. you mentioned you were having trouble breaking the on/off loop but then mentioned your wife somehow was able to do it. while in the on/off loop, did you find that the the radio was actually spending any time "scanning" after it turned on? on one of my evos, the phone would switch from on to off and back to on so quickly, the button was always grayed out in the wireless menu so i could never interrupt it. on my other evo, it would spend a little time scanning ( a second or 2), which was enough time to press the button so the 4g would turn off for good and break the on/off loop. a hard reset fixed the phone with the unbreakable loop (4g now works). a hard reset caused the other phone to change so that 4g just hangs at "turning on..." when i try to toggle it on.

By running the latest RUU, do you mean perform the latest OTA sprint update (the .6) by putting in on my SD card and doing the volume down/power button trick? Is this safe if I already have the update applied? I was considering doing this but wasn't sure if it would be safe to do.

The radio is very flaky, I believe even more so for CDMA devices. What type of phone do you have?
I get the same thing here. Almost 1 out of every 3 times coming out of sleep it is ok. Otherwise I have to go and rebuild the APN settings back to default.
Typically it has something listed but once in a while it lists nothing until I rebuild them.
These times seems like it is like the towers have stopped talking or refuse connection to my phone. Thus the reason why it uploads but not downloading any data.
2.1 had random data issues but 2.2 has some major kink either with the radio version or overall CDMA.
I have Verizon (RHOD500).

you can try re-flashing the radio, which will help if anything has been corrupted
I would try that if my WinMo has an issue. So far just android dropping data on my RHOD500.
I think it is trying to rebuild or at least re-register on the network too much causing issues with towers or internally at least.

I dnt have a problem in WM. Only within Android.
Yea... the radio drivers probably aren't perfect. Far from it, from the sound of things... I've definitely had issues with it as well. I just try to avoid making calls in Android, and receiving them always makes me leery. I've had a few important calls drop because Android decided to reboot itself...
Ahh yeah I've seen the same problems on my RHOD500...usually I know when facebook gets a refresh API error since its set to sync every hour so I just pop on/off airplane mode for a minute and I get data back.
Other then that radio seems pretty decent...I make and receive calls all day with no issues.

[Q] 4G and 3G alternating connection in North NJ?

....if this specific question....very specific question....was already answered...
I can't stay connected to a 4g network. My evo will connect to 4g, stay on for 10 secs, and then disconnect. Then I have to manually reconnect, and the entire process repeats. Before you go passing judgement please read the following:
- I've used terminal emulator to make sure my WiMax Mac is correct.
- I'm using radio 2.15.00.09.01
- Installed a stock version of the OTA 3.29.651.5 and rooted it using this thread: [Guide] How to apply the new OTA 3.29.651.5 when you have clockwork and s-off (sorry can't post links yet)
- WiMax radio is 26023
- PRI is 1.77_oo0
- PRL is 60670
I read something about increasing the timout reconnect from 10 to 300 in another thread that I have bookmarked.
My question is this
Is this the normal function of the WiMax code or does this have something to do with the rooted rom I installed?
Is the only way to fix this done by changing the timeout value mentioned before?
Once again, I will blow my head off if this has been answered before.
Thanks
Shouldn't have anything to do with the rom. Have you ever been able to connect (and stay connected) to 4g? Are you in an "official" 4g area? from what I've seen, the disconnect issues you're describing are normal in areas where they're still rolling out 4g, but it isn't fully up and running yet.
You can also try renaming the xxxx.tree.xml file in /data/misc/wimax/ while the wimax is off, and letting it rebuild the xml file again the next time you turn 4g on - but I think this only helps for the constantly scanning issues. Note that you're renaming that file (instead of deleting it completely) so you can go back to it if you run into any issues.

I have never been able to connect and stay connected to 4G.....but I'm not really aware of any official 4G areas around here. I live in north jersey as well.
I picked up a strong 4G signal by coincidence while near the border of two towns (Clifton and Passaic....not sure if you're familiar with them) and that was when I started experiencing the disconnect/manual-reconnect issues.
I never connected to a 4G network before I rooted my phone because I could never get a signal. It was only until recently, after I rooted, that I've only been able to connect semi-successfully. I tried a good 10 times with the same results.
i.e.
I'd get a strong signal, do a speed test (which was blistering at 8577/1049 on the first try and 7699/1020 the second), and then let the phone sit idle. It will always disconnect, but I have no problems whatsoever manually reconnecting.
My confusion was whether or not this was common for people who have stock, non-rooted, clean as your baby sister's "you know what" Evos when trying to connect to a non-official 4G network, or is something wrong with how I rooted/the rom I used/whatever. Should I have to manually reconnect? Should the phone automatically disconnect from the 4G and go to 3G after a certain idle time? Should the phone automatically use 4G as the main connect if I have the WiMax radio on and the signal is really strong?
I assume I'm connecting to a non-official 4G signal.
Don't get me wrong I enjoy modding anything that has a circuitboard, but keeping up with all the issues can be a little annoying. Being a novice coder, this platform (new to Android) doesn't seem to be to complicated and I'm learning quickly. I have a spare PS3 sitting in my closet still running YDL. You used to be able to install an addtional OS on the PS3 before Sony got pissed because people were f***in up their PS3's. Sony "forced" an update that removed the ability to install another OS on the system, and the update actually wiped-out any other OS you had already installed. I put YDL on the PS3 so I could run NES/SNES/Genesis roms.
Back on topic, and to make a long story short (waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy to late for that I guess), I'm just wondering whether or not my phone is working as it should.
Like I said, the phone connects...I do some stuff like a speed test....then disconnects automatically. Then I get a 4G notificiation in the main Android notification pull-down menu....and re-connect manually. The 4G signal is really strong, not sure if it's official.
Thanks for responding btw, I really appreciate your comments and I'll check out what this tree.xml file is all about. I understand the annoyance though. Not only is it annoying to have multiple threads all talking about the same thing, programmatically it's extremely inefficient and redundant.
Hence, if this question has been asked, I'll blow my head off with a 12 guage.

sometimes getting good advice comes with grabbing attention from the right person. I've elicited an informative response from a couple other members. I thank them for being helpful to someone new.
can't I change the title of my own thread later on?
EDIT: An as soon as I changed the title, views dropped dead...cause I knew a title with good keywords would get no attention.
And you've ensured that while YOU may get advice and a solution, no one in the future will be able to use that same advice because this thread isn't likely to show up in a proper search.
Also, how many people know the answer but don't click on threads with titles as useless as this one? I would bet far more than who would click on it.
This is just basic forum etiquette, not anything unique to XDA.

And you've ensured that while YOU may get advice and a solution, no one in the future will be able to use that same advice because this thread isn't likely to show up in a proper search.
Also, how many people know the answer but don't click on threads with titles as useless as this one? I would bet far more than who would click on it.
This is just basic forum etiquette, not anything unique to XDA.

......you are correct....I understand....that is why I'm going to change the title of the thread. Are you looking for me to say I'm sorry or something?
correct me if I'm wrong, but the site also indexes the content of the message as well. I'm very familiar with SEO and understand that a lot of indexing logic places heavy emphasis on the title of the thread, but the keywords in the content of the page also have a lot to do with how the thread pages get indexed. It doesn't solely rely on the title.
Just to put this to an end, I'm sorry for titling this thread as such?
Now, any thoughts on the actual question that I posted or are you going to stay mad at me forever?

[Q] Wifi loses connectivity after period of inactivity

Hello,
I've searched around the Epic 4G Touch forums as best I could, but sadly I couldn't find anything that was exactly this problem (although I found some interesting articles about wifi sleep time but they don't seem to apply). I'm experiencing an annoying issue where I can connect Wifi just fine, but if the phone is left for a small period of time (~10 minutes), wifi appears as if it's still connected, however it cannot send/receive data. When this happens, the wifi status says it's "connected", but there is no data connection. The only way to to get the data back is to turn off wifi, wait for 3/4G connection to initialize, then turn Wifi back on to refresh it...then it's fine again until I set the phone down again.
I had this problem on stock EL29, so I rooted and flashed Phantom Blazer ROM (very cool ROM, but I'm still experiencing the same issue). After reading the threads on here about wifi sleep times (apparently they're backwards with ICS roms), I've experimented with every setting, yet I still have the same issue--Wifi is fine as long as I'm using the phone, I set it down, after about 10 minutes pick it back up, says it's still connected, but no data connection.
has anybody experienced this problem with this phone? I'm about to unroot my phone/go back to factory so I can take it in to a Sprint store, the problem is they (trying not to be offensive) don't seem to know very much about this device. I thought I'd ask the pros before I return it, get an iPhone, and have to eat my words about how cool Android is vs. iPhone in front of all my friends. I'm hoping there's a reliable ROM or app that can resolve this vs. having to just replace the device!
Thanks for your help!
I'm not the only one
I'm not the only one with this problem:
edit: I can't post links to androidforums.com or anywhere else, but this same problem is all over the interwebs and nobody has a solution.
I'm sure it's not my router as my ASUS tablet/laptops/girlfriend's iPhone experiences no connectivity problems. I'm thinking this is a hardware problem with some of these devices. I will unroot/reset to factory tonight and let you know what happens.
What channel is your router on? And what type is it A/B/G/N?
This is s known TW ICS bug, most likely kernel related. Almost everyone is having this issue and there is no fix until Samsung decides to repair it. There are quite a few posts similar to this one. If you're using XDA's search function, it's not very good. Try using Google next time and search XDA that way.

Hey guys, thanks for the response. Just before I unrooted/reset to factory I tried one last solution--download an app called "Wifi Fixer". It has resolved a lot of these problems. It's not 100%, but after testing it for a day so far, I've only had to manually refresh the connection once or twice. It's a lot better, even liveable, and I won't be resetting to factory afterall, at least not until Samsung provides an update. So if anyone is having the same problem, try Wifi Fixer, hopefully it gives you a similar level of success...I'm not super happy about having to run another background process all the time, but it doesn't seem to affect battery, and the fix it provides is worth it to me.
Cheers!
Huh - a couple of things. Noticed this problem crept back in FF18 and didn't know why until I went back and checked the wpa_supplicant.conf that I'm using. The line ap_scan=2 was missing; after adding it back in the signal strength is back to full and stable.
I'll bump the thread but it appears the config changes here still hold after all:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569348
This should also avoid having the WiFi fixer there as you can specify the country in wpa_supplicant.conf manually.
Thanks for looking in to this! A couple questions from a noob like me though:
When you say the problem crept back in FF18 ... what does that mean? Is that something that exists in the "stock" version of the Epic 4G touch from Sprint?
The manual config file tweaks you're describing ... is that something I can perform myself?
Basically I'm wondering if it's "safe" to revert to stock in order to get consistent wifi signal, or if it's something I'm experiencing because of the ROM I'm using.
Thanks!

Rarely connects to 4G/LTE even though signal is good.

I'm in UK with a unlocked HTC10 from carphone warehouse, on the ThreeUK network.
Recently I've noticed that I no longer connect to 4g other than a few very rare occasions.
The only changes,
1. full update to the latest OS
2. I removed the sim card and put it into an old phone, when I re-inserted it into the HTC I got "network updates" which I accepted.
Things I have done after verifying mobile network/data is set to AUTO
1. delete all APN
2. reset APN to details available on my carrier website
3. Settings >backup+reset>network settings reset.
The odd thing is very occasionally it does decide it likes LTE and it works fine.. but its rare.. even if I do a reboot or toggle airplane mode.... the second I remove the sim card and put it into my old phone I have LTE, so it really isn't a signal issue.
My network have suggested a factory reset, but I am not rooted and have game data among other things that are impossible to backup. so at this stage I would rather not .
totally flummoxed by this one!!! any help or suggestions appreciated...

possible solutions:
- get new sim card
- hard reset done inside stock recovery
Sent from my hTc 10
Thanks.
I got a bit of time today, so did a factory reset.. same error still.. and again I put the sim in my old phone and bang 4g straight away..
in the HTC if I leave it in a strong signal position for several minutes I can see 4g occasionally pop up, but if I walk away from the window it goes again, even though I get 4g through the whole house on my old phone, and did on the htc when I first got it.
Actually thinking theres a hardware fault now.. bit of a strange one.. but looks like i'll have to return the phone tomorrow. we can try a different sim first in the shop
Just an update.
I spoke several times to HTC, one ran through basic resets with me no change (hardly surprising as I've already done a hard reset). this agent "sent through" details for return item for fix.. but these took days to arrive so in the meanwhile thinking they were lost I phoned again.
This agent was going to send me a email with lots of settings changes to try... this email never arrived....
Now since then I've done a lot of research online, and found that there are quite a few sites saying the htc10 on the new software has LTE issues, poor signal dropping signal etc.. IE it is my error, so why did htc support not know this? I wonder if its generic media articles or actually a "known" fault... its so hard to search here as both 4G and LTE are too short search terms..
Now Do I bother to send it back to them and be without my phone for a couple weeks?? if its software then surely they cannot do anything... I wonder how long until the next OTA update that may fix this if I just wait it out??
Really don't know what to do, I rely on my phone a lot, 4G isn't really "needed", but I do find the 3g signal is quite poor around a lot of areas I used to get good 4G.

Thanks, I'm currently on 2.41.401.3
I have good 4g on my old phone (now sold), and this htc10 was better when I first got it, now its aweful,
Can you link me the exact software youre using? I'm very new to the HTC, I assumed the europ unlocked software would be the same as USA? but I don't get Volte or Wifi calling on 3uk..
I use mirrorlink quite a lot, and like the HTC software, so i'm keen to keep on a stock rom so I can use android pay as well etc.. or is your rom custom/rooted etc? Sorry to pester, you're the first threeuk customer on this phone I've come across. any extra details/information would be awesome thanks.

So a bit of an update.. I chickened out of a software change... So got the sim changed, no difference, gotthe phone sent for repair, they updated to 401.4 but no change.. rang again, and we tried setting to 4G only using the service menu, and bop 4G signal just fine.. so it genuinely is a software bug in 7.0, the stupid thing is I had one bar at 3G, I swapped to 4g only and had 5bars!!!!! so it wasn't even like it was favouring the strongest signal.. just a shame I cannot receive phonecalls on 4g, so I need to leave it set to auto and just accept until they sort it that I rarely get 4g.. but at least I now know if I need 4g at any point I can go to the service menu and swap to 4g temporarily. he sounded like there have now been like a few reports of this, so hopefully HTC take it on board and push a software update promptly. he suggested 3-4weeks as a potential timescale, I suspect he meant months.. but fingers crossed

When you were having this problem was Chrome allowing you to access some sites, but on others saying that the DNS server could not be reached? If its same problem that you are having I can't use your work around as it's difficult to get a 4G signal where I live.

Sounds like you're having a different issue, assuming you have a data connection, and each website has no server issues, or the ISP isn't blocking the site(usually they'd say not a DNS error) then one site should load as easy as another, I have these exact same issues when I have ad-blockers enabled on certain sites (some you'd expect to work).. do you run a blocker of any form? try disabling it and trying again on that website..

No ad blocker.
I tried a variation of your solution and made the phone only connect to 3G or lower which seems to have solved the issue even when I switch back to 4G, hopefully it's not just a coincidence. Thanks for your advice.
Three UK user here, just tried the service menu 4G force and that seems to work for me, I shall see how it goes. Good for dead spot testing
So a few days later: Leaving it on means 4G pretty much everywhere I go but the obvious downside is no calls even through the ThreeInTouch app. Bit of a downer so back to watching it sit on 4G until I want to actually use it then it goes 'Hey let me check jump back to regular H for you'
