Just wondered if anyone have come across this.
I've been using Navigation for my PDA as long as I can remember, but after I moved from WiMo devices to Desire, things haven't been working out for me.
TomTom was my first choice on WiMo, but as TomTom does not support Android (yet), I had to look for an alternative.
So far I tested:
CoPilot Live 8
Navigon
MotoNav
Ndrive
Sygic Mobile Maps
Common for all products is this:
When navigating without an external power source, everything works fine - except for CoPilot draining a fully charged battery in less than a coule of hours(!!!)
When navigating with an external powersource, all products - with no exception - will reboot my desire ever so often. Reboots happen in intervals of 5 - 20 minutes. In most cases the Desire will lock up in the start up screen too, and I have to remove the battery. Not good while driving the motorway!
My external powersource is the HTC branded car charger CC C200. I tried with a Nokia charger with the same result. Battery information says 'Charging (AC)'.
In desperation I even tried rooting the device, using Paul's 'Riskfree R6' including a2sd, but to no avail.
Do you think my device is broken, or is this just the way the Desire works?
I searched hi and low, but only found comments on the CoPilot battery drain problem, not Desire rebooting while navigating and connected to car charger.
Any help would be appreciated.
BTW: I also tried google navigation and lo and behold - even works with the car-carger connected. Too bad I don't have a dataplan to support it
PS: I'd hate to go back to my WiMo TouchPro 2..... although I miss the keyboard.....
Cheers

I use Copilot all the time without issue.
First of all, check that your car charger outputs 1A (1000mA). A 500mA charger generally isn't enough to keep the device charged when using GPS navigation.
As to your rebooting problem, I'd suggest flashing a different radio, but it's not something I've heard of before, so I can only make a suggestion rather than provide a definitive solution.
Regards,
Dave
I'm afraid you are experiencing the first signs of a defective motherboard: it heats up and then restarts the device. There are several reports of this if you search the threads and it gets worse over time.
I really hope I'm wrong but you should prepare for it being a possibility (e.g. unroot so you can send it in for repair).

Yes, I read that in another thread, and that's why I went for the HTC CC C200 (1500mA).
Which version of CoPilot Live 8 are you using?

Thought about that too, but my Desire doesn't feel warm at all, and why would it run just fine, when a charger is not attached? I tried disabling BT/3G/Wireless but same thing happened.
Thanks for your replies guys.

Same version.
I tested on my way to or from work several times, and within that hour it manages to restart my Desire at least 5 times

You could install aLogcat from Market and see what exactly happens, what causes your Device to restart. (if you can't figure out what it says you can post your logcat and we will try to help).
I'm using Sygic mobile maps, works perfect with a noname 1000mA car charger.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I used Google nav. And I have a car charger that I got from Sprint (about $30). Everything works perfectly.

Im using version 8.0.0.778. Got it form Alk's website and its the one that shows up on Market.
Im using Copilot also, the official version from Android Market place. I use a cheap Cigarte light to USB adapter and have no issue what so ever.
I say install alogcat and see what it say when it reboots.

I'd appreciate that. Please PM me.
There might have been some bugfixes since '606'.

I installed aLogcat from the market. Looks like a great tool for troubleshooting.
Unfortunately I'm not able to test it on a longer drive, before I'm off for Portugal on my hols Monday. And isn't it ironic - I'll need my Desire to navigate me from the airport to our final destination in a rental-car
I really appreciate your help guys
Enjoy your hols.
I'm using Sygic without any problems. Charging via unversal USB adapter, which I'm guessing provies only 500mA power (while navigating with GPS + BT, the battery doesn't get charged. I think it even loses a few % per hour). Anyway, it is enough for 5+ hours of navigation.
If possible, I would try to use a different charger.

I think the Nokia chargers link out the data wire connections just like your wall charger does and are capable of putting out enough power. If when connected the battery staus says "charging Ac" its got the data wires shorted, If it Says "charging Usb" it thinks its a pc and so limits itself to 500ma so it does not damage the pc.

Hi,
i have a samsung car charger and I also think it's giving out only 500 ma because when I use navigation the phone slowly discharges. if I stop the navigation then it will charge again.
So what I want to do is to short out the 2 middle pins which are the data pins.
I already tested with the multimeter and there is no connection between the 2 data pins in my car charger.
So please tell me :
1. is it safe to short out the data pins on my car charger?
2. what exactly should I see on the phone ? ( when I plug it to the wallcharger its just charging without any message ( unlike usb charge where you have a specific message)
3. If everything will work ok ... how can I be sure that the charger will provide me 1000ma instead of only 500ma ?

hi
Did somebody have problem like that : during when gps is working I can't charge my touch pro2 , its going to around 70% battery and then flashing alternately green and orange notification LED and battery heat up (is really hot) . Next problem is that GPS sometimes doesn't want start (it show very low sat signal ) . Last time it started after I did ... 200 miles !!! External GPS (via bluetooth) works every time ... . Maybe my pro2 is broken ?
any ideas ?

well, last resort .. do a hard reset and reinstall your gps software. If still getting the same problem, return it for a new one, cos it should charge while the gps is running; Cos I have done it from a long roadtrip during my vegas grandcanyon trip...with more than 200miles :>

Outside car was 17-18 C inside similar (open windows) .When GPS is off it charge normally . when it heat up it even stink as my old burned desktop computer ...
so that's definitely not my case..
i think your unit is faulty...
the stink would make me worry....
i'd ask for a replacement of the unit
I had the same problems.
So I bought the original Car Charger from HTC, the HTC CC C100.
That works like a charm.
The original charger deliveres 1Amp, most 3th party chargers don't.
And your HTC won't get so hot anymore, somehow more amps makes your HTC work less hard to charge??

When this problem appeared I was thinking about it .But I've got original charger as well , though different model . it's CLA 05D-050 and it delivers 1A .I used it with HTC Touch HD and was fine ....
I've got the same problem, sometimes the TP2 gets really hot and sometimes not (and then stops charging), first I thought it depends on surrounding temperature, but I'm not sure.
@agaryt: If it's an original HTC charger, it must be your TP2?
I'm not sure yet but probably I solved problem . I uninstalled 2 programs :
Spike's_ MicNeo_TaskBar_Touch2_Varient_3_v2.cab and TP2-Batt.cab witch was 1% increment battery driver .... I did it yesterday and I used TP2 almost 9 hours with charger today with no problem at all .GPS showed me better signal as well . It is hard to believe that TP2-Batt.cab is responsible for this problem that why I will keep test for next 2 days during my trips (in lorry).
So, if will be fine I've got resolution if not I will send it back to HTC .

the 1% mod is a replacement for the battery driver, and it is possible it is the culprit..

While using navigation SW (with gps) and charging in the car, sometimes the TP2 gets hot and stops charging...
Similar problems happened over the years with various pocketpc devices. Seems that GPS consumes more than 500mA, so you need a 1A charger to charge it properly.
There are also some 2A "fast" chargers available, but I dont feel really comfortable sending 2A to my precious pocketpc.
Also if you drive in extremely hot conditions with direct sunlight hitting the device, you might want to consider creating a cardboard "hat" for your device.

You don't send 2A to your precious device, the adapter is capable to deliver 2A.
The device you charge will ask for the amps.
today problem came back . But LED showed me overheating twice (it last 5-10 minutes everytime ) and then back to charge . after that it back to normal charge and battery is full now . I couldn't complain of it but during overheated GPS gets low satellites signal and very often lose it ...

Buy a proper Samsung official charger. I have one and dont have this problem when using Sygic.
Started with 60% drove for 40minutes with sygic and charging and got out with 78% Its low. but its not sapping the battery faster than recharging.
the sygic is the only that i dont have problem....

I like very much the igo that i use it in wm.But the last solution is this.
I'm using the original charger and on iGO with full brightness it just keeps the charge, it goes neither up nor down.
A few days ago I purchased Galaxy S II official vehicle dock, so today I decided to give it a try. But to the problem I ran into, was that when I was using GPS (CoPilot) the phone shows that its charging, but it actually slowly discharges it. Well first I thought that, my car cigarette lighter plug didn't give it enough juice, but then I tried the same thing with the phone connected to regular power outlet using the original charger. The result was that the phone shows that its charging, but the percentage doesn't go up or down, it just idles at the percentage point, when i connected it to charger. I'm pretty sure it should charge the phone, even if I use GPS and the screen is switched on. My second thought was that the phone was overheating due to hot weather, but im not sure about this.
The only time I actually got the phone charging through the cigarette plug, was when the phone's screen was switched off.
So my question is what should I do? Is the dock connector damaged or something? should I consider changing it or is there some other problem? I have read all the topics about this issue and its seems, that there is no firm fix for this. Im really running out of ideas.
(The phone was charged to 80% when I encountered this problem.)
About phone:
Android version: 4.0.4
Kernel version: 3.0.33-Siyah-v3.3.1
Resurrection version 2.1
CurrentWidget stats:
Running GPS and screen switched on
638mA - when connected to regular power outlet
640mA - when connected to cigarette lighter plug
4.071V
Temp. 51C
I have actually the same issue, I just presumed that the car charger doesn't produce enough charge to actually charge.

I can only give you 3 guesses:
1- Maybe it's some sort of weird software bug (maybe the ICS 4.0.4 + SiyahKernel combination or something);
2- It's simply the battery chip going crazy (whenever my battery indicator seems to go nuts I simply reset the fuel gauge with ExTweaks, you might wanna give it a try); and
3- A bad or damaged car-plug charger (since you have that problem when charging from the dock and directly from an original charger, I don't think it's a bad dock).
I'm saying that because I use the original car dock quite a lot - almost always for usage as a GPS Navigator (NDrive 11) with GPS, Data and WiFi Connection always on (too lazy to turn WiFi off while in the car) and usually with an increased brightness (around 50 - 70%) and even in those battery unfriendly conditions (GPS on and locked, WiFi and Data on, high brightness, etc, etc, etc) it still charges the battery. It takes a while to get a full charge, but it gets fully charged eventually. And I sometimes use the car-plug charger directly in the phone, when I'm not using my S2 as a GPS Navigator.
I would suggest you to try and use another ORIGINAL car-plug charger to check - or maybe go back to whoever sold you the dock and get it replaced or something...
Hope this helps. Best regards mate.

You can buy it on eBay - there are a lot of UK stores with very high positive reputation - I bought mine from one in UK, and it arrived about 3 weeks after the purchase (and keep in mind that the brazilian customs is recognized worldwide as one of the slowest, most burocratic in the planet). It was worth the wait, though, as the minimum value of the original vehicle dock sold "officially" in Brazil was more than twice the purchase and shipping costs from buying it in eBay...
Your problem, is everyone's problem.
This phone will only charge at 750ma, and not 1A like most smart phones.
You can change this by rooting the deivce and installing a different kernal.
Should you do this, you may notice the phone getting hotter whilst charging, and I imagine your battery's overall lifespan will be shorter,

When my Galaxy Nexus GSM is not plugged in, the battery shows itself as "discharging". Previously this used to be "not charging". I have tried multiple (Jelly Bean) ROMs, different cables, wall and USB chargers. Same problem. The larger issue: my PC no longer recognizes my phone and I have resorted to using AirDroid to transfer files.
Can anyone shed light on this issue?
I have done full wipes, including wiping battery stats.
Mine was always discharging...
And make sure that you got fast charge off if you have that on. That disables MTP capability.
I have exactly the same problem...see my thread...its recent!

I had a similar issue, and then not long after the phone refused to charge. I had to take it to get serviced, and the ended up giving me a refurb instead.
I think it has to do with the temp of the battery, if its too hot and you have it plugged in it will say discharging.

First, don't use a charger other than the original. The different volts mess with the NFC chip and antenna. Try disabling NFC and rebooting. Leave NFC off and try to charge. If that doesn't do it I have another option that might work but I'm CDMA so you would have an extra step to change lines in file.
Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I tried disabling NFC but it had no effect. My phone is the international version (the box was in Polish) which is not warrantied through Samsung USA, so I guess I'm out of luck there as well. I'm just gonna hang in there until the next Nexus phone, I guess.

When will people realize that the difference in voltage won't cause any problems with the phone as long as they're within safe range.
I've been using the charger that came with my G2 (htc) on my nexus for months and have no problems. I would've continued using the original one that came with the nexus but it had an annoying whine to it.

Really because it sure seemed to be my problem a while back and anytime i use a different one. Guess samsung and google must not know what theyre talking about.
Chargers are rarely the problem, however different usb cables might be the problem instead.

Am using samr original charger and cord. Works fine
I have this same issue
My Galaxy Nexus from Verizon has worked flawlessly for several months now. It updated about 4 days ago to JellyBean 4.1.1 and I have been charging the same two wall chargers, car charger, and USB cables every day since I got the phone. I even was using the USB charger to deploy and debug a simple application I am building around noon today. This evening at about 8 PM while on the wall charger I noticed the charging stopped. No lightening bolt icon, status says Discharging, and I noticed one time that it said Not Charging. Neither of the wall chargers work, nor is it recognized by the laptop using the USB cable. It is at 65% charge and is dropping fast. It seems that no one has a fix for this other than replace the phone.
Very difficult for me to believe that the USB port just went bad using the same chargers every day. Hard to blame JellyBean that has run at least 4 days with no issue even though several sites point to a possible charging issue. I even dialed *#*#4636#*#* and checked the battery status, and it's health was good. I have not rooted or placed anything on this phone that is obscure beyond my simple near "hello world" development apps. I have rebooted, and performed a battery pull with no such luck. With the number of posts pointing to a JellyBean issue, and users experiencing the same issue after the upgrade to 4.1.1 I am leaning towards this being a software issue, but it is interesting at the number of posts saying that the their only fix is a refurb phone replacement from the carrier.
Pretty odd occurrence, and extremely frustrating. As I said the phone worked fine all day today. This just started a few hours ago for me.

OK I have fixed my issue. and it does appear to have been hardware related. I will preface this with you must be very careful not to break your phone with the solution below. I read several posts about using contact cleaner on the USB port, so I looked at the port on the phone and noticed that the "toungue" inside the reciever USB port appeared to be slightly bent down. With the phone off and battery removed I used a needle to wedge under the toungue and bend it up ever so slightly making sure I would not break it. Pluged in the phone and it still did not charge. (That was last night) this morning with the phone at 55% and thinking it was going to need to go back to Verizion I did it again phone off and battery removed only this time a bit more forcefully out of desperation. I definitely moved the "toungue" up and even had a bit of difficulty getting the USB cord to slide back into the connector. But when it did the Phone is charging again. Appearantly I must of jammed the plug into the phone upside down last night when getting into my car and bent the "tongue" in the USB port. Lesson learned, and hope this helps others.
Means the battery has been recharged and discharged to the point were it holds less of the charge. Basically its an older battery, or its been tappered with with, probably a rom using to much ram or pussing the device a bit too far nightly and ported roms could be the cause I say stick to stock kernal unless you really now what to do
Scrap that wrong fourm I think
Thanks for taking the time...
My Note 8 3g is showing a strange behaviour as of late.
I leave it plugged in the original wallcharger from Samsung, switched on/ 3G active.
Plugging in at roughly 10% that would give me 50-60% in the morning after 7-8 hours.
Battery & Task manager don't show any permanent CPU hogs or wake locks.
Device is loaded with a couple of generic apps but not rooted...
With a 4600mAh battery and a the 2000mAh Samsung charger charging at 0.5C the tablet should be finished after roughly 3 hours.
My Note 8 is taking twice the time for half the charge?!
Before giving it a hard reset I would like to know, if someone has an idea / solution.
Thanks again for Your time,
Yoko
That is a worry. I get full charge after about 3 hours on my samsung charger, and about 10% charge per hour on my blackberry charger at work. Mine is the wifi only model though, i dont know how much juice the 3g and what ever other connections you have running will use and if that would make up much difference. Sounds like a significant amount slower though. Do you have access to another 2A charger to see if its a problem with the samsung charger rather than the tablet?
In my case was the faulty charger cable, I was getting nuts searching for help when someone (don't remember which tread was) said about that. There's a free app on playstore that shows you how much current are receiving your device. With that app I realized that it was the cable, not the charger or software related.
Hope that helps.

I have this issue too. I'm going to try to find a new charger and see if that works.

Can you please say what the app's name is?.. I seem to have charger issues as well.

I would try, in order:
1. Check your battery stats to make sure nothing weird is chewing up the battery (should be screen, Android OS and possibly Google Services as the top culprits...if there is any *app* above those and you're not really using the app, uninstall it)
2. Bypass a surge protector (if there is one) and plug directly into the wall.
3. Try a different cable
4. Try a different charger
5. Try the charger and cable on a different device that uses 2.1a if possible
If there are no rogue apps, nothing changes and the charger seems to function properly, then you are probably looking at a hardware problem with the device. I would guess a factory reset wouldn't accomplish anything.
also if you are looking for a diff charger make sure the amps are the same. i believe its a 2a charge on this tab. if not then charging will take longer.
Thanks to all Your kind replies!
Sorry for staying quiet for a couple of days, it's been a very busy week for me.
My problem appears to be solved - it has indeed been the USB cord!
Seriously....who would have thought.
I use the exact same cable to charge my HTC One S without an issue.
Thanks again to all of You! :good:

I faced the same Issue. Just let the battery Drop to %0 and Turned off then let the device pwged in overnight. For me that fix it without using any apps
NB. I know letting Li-ion battery drop to %0 is bad!
good Luck
