Hey guys!
I'm a bit confused about a couple of things. Firstly is background data. I'd I turn it off, what happens? If I turn it on, what happens then? Lets say for example I've set my facebook n weather update to be once every 3 hours. If I turn off background data, will that disturb the updates? ie. Will it not update every 3 hours?
Another question is if I set my 3g connection to be off, will the phone automatically turn it on every 3 hours to update my facebook n weather?
Thanks guys
If you switch of background data, the majority of apps won't sync. Also if you switch 3g off, I assume you mean data (there is edge and gprs) then you won't have net. Also it will not switch it on unless you do, so no sending.

I want my desire's wifi goes to sleep when i lock the screen; therefore i set the option to "after 15 minutes". However, when i woke up several times during last night >.< to find that every time when i turn the screen on, i could see the wifi was still on. what should i do? thanks
WiFi
Try installing Juice Defender from the Market. Works for me.
have the wifi and 3g on off buttons as widgets on one of the home screens, and turn them off easily when not needed, like sleeping, takes a few seconds to reconnect, saves alot of battery for me

thank you for this. just curious, if we have to use widget to control the connection, what is the policy designed for? do I misunderstand the purpose of that or it IS not functioning rightly?

the policys are for automated controls, so its meant to turn off after 15 mins or whatever, i keep it as a widget so i can turn them on and off manually as i generally have the wifi or 3g on all the time for gtalk etc
i turn the 3g off when going under ground, sleeping or in a meeting where i wnt be needed it. its easier to do manually then wait for the automated to kick in in my oppinion

i do want it automatically turn off the wifi for me. i think my problem is that even i set it to "after 15 mins", the wifi is still on even after 20 or 30 mins after i turn off the screen.
Usually it will stay off until you awaken the screen (phone) by which time it will try to re-enable itself for your convenience.

i tried the setting in Nexus as well. In Nexus, it is not "after 15 mins", but "when screen turns off". unfortunately, even you check the wifi status after you turn off the screen 10 mins later, the wifi is still on.. totally no idea how that is supposed to work..
How are you checking whether the WiFi is on? By waking it up again, or seeing whether it is connected to your router?

Yes that works for me to, just a simple quick press on or off and no worries about it using battery life when you dont want it to.
Dear all,
Is anyone else experiencing the following problem?
When the phone goes to sleep mode during the night hours it wont receive any messages for whatsapp etc. It seems that it turns off the 3g connection when you turn the screen off during the night hours.
Does anyone know a possible fix for this?
I have gone through all the settings and could not find anything about this.
Cheers.
I recently got this on my Desire Z too, and I have not changed any settings on that. Then I noticed it's happening on my One X too..
no 3g late night
Hi there, i have a motorola photon. in the settings menu you can go to what is called battery and data manager. then tap on battery mode. it's default is set to nighttime saver, which will kill your syncing after 15 minutes of inactivity in the hours between 10pm and 5am. i set mine to performance mode. this will sync all of the time and i don't really care if it takes up battery since i am awake and ready to pop in a new battery off my kick a$$ battery dock wall charger!! hope this helps....

I think it's got something to do with what HTC said about "the phone learning" when you check things like mails ect.. so after it has learned that you do not check mail (for instance) during the night it disengages activies... or not
@mykeyvee, there are no such options in the stock rom on this phone.
Anyone have any other ideas?, i want everything to be synced 24 hours a day.

I don't think it's anything to do with settings. My Desire Z is on 2.3.7 and only recently have I got this bug.
My One X is stock unrooted. No settings for power saving.
Accounts and sync>sync schedule>smart sync
Is this what is effecting you

This. I woke up and my 3G wasn't even on. I had to disable and enable data again to get connected.
Same problem here. Whenever my phone is in standby mode for a longer period of time (as far as I've seen it doesn't matter whether it's during the night or day), the data connection (3g) is disconnected.
On my previous phone, a desire Z, there was a setting 'data always on' which addressed this issue. This setting however seems to be missing on all android 4 phones.
**edit:
Contacted Dutch HTC support; they claim it's a feature. Hope they restore the setting in the future..
I have noticed this too this morning.
I woke this morning and went into the battery settings and you can see the graph that all data was shut off over night.
How do we fix this.
Piss. Wondered why it used virtually no battery overnight...

Exactly same here...just as u switch on the screen....it connects to wifi or 3g instantly...

I have received email overnight though....

I was thinking that maybe it was just the 3g/wifi connection which was going into a sleep mode after a long period of inactivity.
I've tried increasing my mail sync at night to once in 30 minutes to prevent the 3g connection from going to sleep and disconnecting. (had it at once in 4 hours)
Now when i wake up and turn the screen on, the 3g icon is already there, and my mail has been synced last in the previous 30 minutes.
Fixed it?
Same issue here, weird thing is that I can't seem to tie it down to either a specific battery-percentage nor a specific time of the day. It's really annoying though, as I would like my device to be connected 24/7. Tried setting a mail-account for 15 min update, so will see how much wifi/3g has been on tomorrow.
Edit: Definitely not a battery issue, but rather a time issue. Battery is at 80% (used the phone little today) and 3G/wifi has been disconnected for the past 2 hours even when mail is set to check every 15 min. I can see that for many people it's not important at night, but I wish we at least had the option to turn it off :/
Possible Fix
Download this app.. Minimaltext
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.devmil.minimaltext&feature=search_result
Create a widget 1x1, under the tap behavior, select start another activity, then select an activity. Scroll now to settings, expand it, choose power saving setting..
Leave the rest default then press okay.
Click the widget and you will find some settings, including put data connection to sleep when screen is off. I haven't tried it. Hope this helps.
Not a bug!
This is not a bug, but a feature : scheduled standby mode
If on Sense 4.x, settings are similar to Sense 3.5, you should go into settings > power then scroll to standby mode. Default setting is auto, which means that the phone learns your sleeping phases and disable every wirless connections during this time when your screen is off, and enable it again automatically when you wake up (even if your screen is still off).
You can disable this feature, or (my favorite option) manually set the duration when you allow your phone to enter and exit deep standby mode.
(For me it's a great feature, as I really dislike having my phone producing airwaves close by my head when I'm sleeping. Before I went to Sense 3.5 on my DHD, I didn't have this option and had to enable plane mode before sleeping ant enter my PIN code every morning to exit plane mode, which was less convenient).
If you want to disable this, download smartsync disabler from the play store. Im pretty sure there is a thread on xda too with an app available to download.
...Or read my previous post... Market's bloatware is not needed, setting for this should be in power settings, as on Sense 3.5.
i have this problem with my " mobile data" not wifi .. wifi works fine i guess its only the mobile data when the screen is off it stops working and when i swipe open the screen again i find alot of notifications and stuff from social apps i kept looking and searching before i post here all i found was this and its about the wifi and its already set to never
menu>settings>wifi>menu>advanced>keep wifi on during sleep>always
btw im using wanamlite rom 3.0.31 i guess im still a noob here got my phone like 2 weeks ago or something switching from an iphone 4s
What do you mean, that you find a lot of notifications from social apps? Are they suggesting that there is no connection or are they normal informations? As far as I know it is normal that those notification gather over time when screen is off and are displayed en masse after screen is turned on. If you are certain that mobile data is off when screen is off, look for some installed app that is supposed to "save energy" as they are sometimes configured to disable data (sometimes all data) to safeguard battery.

Hi.
I don't have any problems like wifi dropping while browsing at my home, college or gf's house.
But when i turn off the screen after a while (can be 5 minutes or 30 minutes) my downloads stop (big games from the store, torrents, etc). They resume after i turn on the screen.
Also messages received from email and messengers are unpredictable. For example, while writing this post, i received a notification from hangouts on my N7 5 minutes after i received on my S3. Other times i only get the notification if i turn on the screen.
The battery status and wifi analyzer show me wifi was always on.
On wifi settings, keep wifi on during sleep option is always on, like i want.
This happens on 3 different locations with 3 different isp's.
This doesn't happen with my other 2 android devices.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Let us know if you figure it out.

Did you read my post?
That option is always on like I wrote and highlighted in bold.
It seems that for a few minutes it ignores the option to keep wifi on. Any ideas?
Sounds like the N4 issue to me. Try one of the tips from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2072930
