Rooting from 2.2 stock on a Mac?

I know this has been asked a few times, but reading through 100's of threads and posts, I still dont see it..
Has anyone come up with a procedure to root a stock 2.2 froyo evo while using a mac computer yet?

It's the exact same method. There's an unrevoked 3 for mac and it works done. An updated mac will also already have the driver so you can skip that step.

Yes. You'll want to find the root 2.2 thread in the dev forum. The steps are pretty much use an exploit to downgrade to 2.1 and then use unrevoked. I simply didn't cover all of the steps.

yeah, I have seen that thread; so, just use unrevoked 3 for mac to "start" the process, and just follow the thread once you have root?
I dont recall if there are any ".exe" files you need to run through the process, since you obviously cant run those on a Mac..

Hi, I know this thread is old but I'm resurrecting it because it sort of applies to my situation.
Basically I want to know if I could use this to flash to an old stock update as opposed to a beta build. (I'm on an epic so I won't go into more details, just curious if I can use this basic methodology since I do not have any access to a windows machine and ODIN does not work on mac). Thank you!

need help w/clockwork/g2

I have perm root & rom manager(both of them)and when i select flash clockwork recovery a red triangle over a phone image appears on the screen and stays until i pull the battery. what am i doing wrong ? please help.

Uninstall your old rom manager because it doesnt support g2, download the new one, flash clockwork mod-select g2 as your device- wait for it to download and flash he recovery. Btw i would suggest you click fix permissions first before doing any of that

just like others said, make sure you have the latest rom manager (i believe its v2.5.0.7). are you seeing a "G2" option when you click flash clockwork recovery?

I finaly decide to root my G2( and S-Off ). So I use CyanogenWiki procedure without section about Flashing the Engineering HBoot with is denger and optional.Next I was uninstall no need stock soft (mp3 amazon finance or listen).Today I try to backup everything with clockwork mod.
1. Is the procedure with ROM Manager safe?
2.Do i need to do something else after geting perma root and s-off to install clockwork mod ? (still don't know what for is Engineering HBoot)
3. After instaling clockwork mod or after rooting I will stop geting official updates ?
4. Do i have to buy a prem version of ROM Manager or free market version will do the job ?
5. How to flash clockwork v3 and is there reason to do that ?

Ok
1.Clockwork mod is very safe
2.No. If you have Perma-rooted your phone you are good to go
3.After installing it you can receive OTA updates if you are using STOCK rom
but its best to not update via OTA at risk of losing root. I was already had
temp root when we got the OTA in US and I had no problem but be warned
4.The free version is fine. But its always good to buy the paid version for added benefits and to help dev out

Sometimes it takes a couple of times before recovery sticks, so if you get the red triangle just reflash the recovery again untill it sticks.

Eng. Hboot is not required to flash a custom rom, but obviously perm-root is. Im guessing you got that quote "Perm Root with hboot-eng.....is needed to flash a custom ROM (still REQUIRED for the moment)" from the CM7 Nightly thread, but there is a way to flash CWM3 without an ENG. Hboot ( it requires terminal emulator) and also the CM7 nightly rom.

Any idea how to install CM7 from stock less risky way then hboot ? How about flashing CM 6 and upgrading to 7 ?

If the HBOOT required comment was for just CWM3, then there are guides already out there (including one stickied in this forum):

[Q] Which root method?

I had my WF S S-OFF today and now I am looking forward for rooting it. But I am a bit confused about something: I read a tut about rooting WF S 2.3.3 Gingerbread with Gingerbreak apk and I also found this rooting tut on this site : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195275
I didn't tried before being sure to not mess up with my device. So does both methods work or which one is preferred?

Run gingerbreak, device will restart. You are then rooted.

Yes unless you want to have custom roms, then you will need to install a custom recovery which can be found in the development section.

Do I have a chance to restore back the original recovery in case of visiting service if phone gets messed up?
I am wondering if it's possible to use gingerbreak, then install nandroid get everything backed up (not sure if it backups the original recovery in the phone) then un apply gingerbreak and then install custom recovery.
So this way I can restore the backup with original rom and original recovery. Is something like that possible?

Is it a good idea / practice to install Clockword Rom Manager as it will replace the recovery menu that I have to install for rooting the device? I am not planning to checkout roms for now, but was just wondering

Nandroid backup is in the custom recovery. You can remove everything if you just install a RUU. Also you cannot backup the original recovery as you need a custom recovery to backup your ROM.

So best practice is using tut on xda, then install Clockword Rom Manager to install nandroid also and take full backup and then play with the phone?

Yeah, but make sure you install the CWM from the development here or else it won't work. It's very simple to install it. As your phone is S-off you can install the recovery and then backup the original unrooted rom and keep that as a backup.

3-) Then with using nandroid (I think it's included with CWM? I read something like that on a site) I will take backup of my whole phone (I still wonder how it will backup unrooted version of rom eventho it's rooted)
4-) Remove unnecessary branded stuff (I don't know how to do that, any app for that?)
5-) Then just mess with the phone.
So my last questions is : When I install RUU, it will get back to stock recovery, and when i install the unrooted backup it will be like a legal phone right ? (Of course i will turn S-OFF back)

You got it all right, except if you have never updated the phone, as there was an update which blocked gingerbreak you don't need to do most of it.
Also when you flash the RUU it will all go stock. S-off will remain as it can't be turned on. Not to my knowledge anyway.

I think I wont use gingerbreak method, I checked for updates when I bought it and it said no updates. So probably that fix is already included in the WF S :/
I didn't managed to find RUU for WF S somehow but i guess for now I don't need it.
Today the guy at service shop (for breaking S-OFF) said that there is way for user to set S-OFF back, but he said he doesn't know the exact way. I thought hard reset will fix it

I've rooted, and I know how to unlock the bootloader, but how do I get a custom ROM?

Hello guys.
This phone seems a little different from the HTC phones I am used to (Nexus One, Desire HD/Inspire). I have rooted the phone using the zergrush method, very easy. Now I know that I'll need to unlock the bootloader using fastboot. But once that's done, how will I get a custom ROM onto the phone?
On my previous phones I needed to have clockworkmod recovery, and I just put the zip and apply update from sd card. Or more often, used ROM manager to do it for me. How will I get a CWM recovery onto the phone without using ROM manager? Is there a tutorial on these steps?

I had the same problems when i came from the Desire HD. So i'll try to explain a little
1) Unlike other devices, we have no dedicated recovery partition, so we cannot flash a custom recovery directly to the device. Recovery is held on the boot partition. The same partition as the kernel, so for us to have a custom recovery, we need to flash a custom kernel, with the recovery embedded in the kernel. Both of doomlords kernels and the CM7 kernel comes with embedded recovery's.
2) Kernels are easy to flash from fastboot. But you will need an unlocked bootloader, and obviously as recovery and kernel are on the same partition, you cannot flash a new kernel from recovery, only fastboot.

I've hit a snag however when trying to unlock the bootloader. The phone won't go into fastboot so I can't install my drivers, and whenever I try the getvar command it sticks on "waiting for device. I've read that on the Arc they use a flash tool to get an unbranded firmware on the phone, and then it will work afterwards but the firmwares I found for this are on the Arc, not the Play.
A page or so into the dev forum there's a thread specifically for unlocking the play. There are people in there having the same problem as me - I only get the green light, no blue light. I'm guessing my phone since I bought it from AT&T is locked somehow so I can't use this method.
Is there any way to do it otherwise? I don't think I can manage using that SEtool, it looks too hard. I'm willing to pay to have it done remotely like some people offer though. Is this what I'll have to do?

A few qiestions about rooting

Hello everyone, im really mew to rooting.
I have the T Mob M8 with 5.0.1, i was planning on rooting but will I be able to update nprmally wjen 5.1 comes out? If so how?
Also whats tje easiest method to root this phone? Ive seen apks like framaroot that root the phone extremely quick and easy...is there something similar for this phone?

Root by unlocking the bootloader via HTCDev.com and then just install custom recovery and flash current (2.56) SuperSU zip.
One click root solutions won't work with a locked bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader is really the key.
Once rooted, you can OTA. But you need to have stock ROM (nothing altered in /system partition) and you need to re-install stock recovery. Root is okay (although you will likely lose root) and unlocked bootloader is okay to OTA. To root again after an OTA, just install custom recovery and flash SuperSU again.

hello I saw your post Im planning also to root my m8 but I dont want to flash the custom recovery someone told me it is possible
just download the custom recovery
then type "fastboot boot recovery.img" = this will boot my m8 to custom recovery but not flash so I can flash the supersu in that custom recovery then reboot after that stock recovery is still intact

That's true, you can boot TWRP remotely with fastboot, without actually flashing it (installing to the phone).
Although its slightly irrelevant; you can always flash back to stock recovery back to the phone (over-write TWRP). You can either find your stock recovery posted in the collection; or back it up your self using the fastboot TWRP trick (fastboot boot TWRP, and use TWRP to backup stock recovery). In that instance, the fastboot boot TWRP trick is very useful.
Having TWRP installed after root is very useful. Reason being, it gives you a lot more recovery options if things go south. And also, for a lot of mods done under root, you will want to backup your stock setup anyway (just in case the mod goes wrong, and you need to revert). Stock recovery is close to useless for anything but installing OTA updates.

woah didnt know that I can back up the stock recovery by fastboot boot in TWRP BTW if I'm using this phone I will probably use a TWRP but its my gf who uses it so she just need the root access for xmod app because she is an coc adik haha and she doesnt know about modding its system, thanks for this wonderful information

hello I need your help this m8 is previously rooted have supersu installed then take OTA before now it is not rooted but the supersu still intact on my apps, I fastboot boot twrp.img then went smoothly flash the supersu.zip but Im still unrooted any suggestion? it say on root checker the root access is not properly installed
update: sorry got root now I flashed the 1.94.zip which is very outdated didnt notice it flashed the latest 2.46.zip now its rooted thank you so much!

Hello I finally started downloading everything to get started. I start the process to unlock the bootloader but when i get to the part i need to type "fastoboom oem....." On cmd I get an error saying Adbwinapi.dll is missing try reinstalling the program.
What can I do to fix this?

Is HTC Sync installed? If so, re-install it.

Try a different adb installer.
