is the only way rooting the desire? - Desire General

Hi to all,
I got my desire last week and I am still finding out what all is possible and also what is not,..
so to make it short it is not possible to read any sites or mails written in farsi which is written with the arabic alphabet and from right to left.
on my last device the HTC Touch Pro (WM 6.5) I hade to install the font and implement it into the system so I could read and write latin and arbaic.
now reading a few posts and also googling the issue it seems to me that apperntly one has to root the device to install such a support on an android device.
my question is if that assumtion of mine is correct?
I realy don't want to root my device only because I have to read som farsi stuff on it but on the other hand I realy do have to read a lot of mails during the day.
thx
s.

Why don't you contact the HTC customer support?

Because your device only has support to the areas where he was sold on :S

I don't care if my device has ony support in theas areas,
the desire is not the cheapest mobile around and also targets at busniss users and journalists, and there for should support the read and wrirte in different languages specialy in thease globalized days. I am not asking for getting an Farsi device in germany but to have the abelity to read letters that are used by much more than 1,6 billion people.
every PC, windowMobile device, Linux macheane has this support with two or threee clicks.
it is a shame if that is not possible,..

Android rtl support and compare between HD2 and Desire

Hi;
I wanna to buy my first smartphone.
and after some researches I aim at HTC Desire and HTC HD2.
another notice is that my language is Persian (Farsi) and It's a right to left language. Does HTC Desire support my language plus English?
As you Know in a web cruise. We face to a lot of languages so it's better that they seem correctly in phone screen
Is there anyway to solve this problem with Desire OS (Android 2.1)
And should I Buy HD2 instead of Desire? Why?
Also PLEASE CONTRIBUTE IN THE POLL
Regards ...
A google search says it doesn't, not without installing it anyway (you need to be able to use ADB to do that).
Having said that, I'm pretty sure I have arabic in my settings menu (which google search also says isn't avaliable) =/

But I heard that I can do it by connect desire to my computer and go to it's root and something else
Thus shouldn't I buy Desire ?
and could you please explain this : forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=646595
What is it about? Do add rtl languages support similar, too?
Thanks
Can anyone help me please specially about this urls : forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=646595
developer.android.com/reference/java/text/Bidi.html
developer.android.com/reference/java/lang/Character.UnicodeBlock.html
(copy these urls and paste in your browser address bar)
And that finally can I add Persian language after buying HTC Desire

Hi,
regarding your poll, I think the HD2 is too big for a mobile device.
regarding the Arabic/Farasi support (and all other right-to-left languages), ... Google android does support this (right-to-left rendering), but it does NOT show those languages by default (natively) meaning you cannot read Arabic characters (by default) in Web/SMS/emails, .. etc
however there are some Arabic developers that made that happen in android 1.6 and I believe they will work on it for the android 2.1 also.
check this post
https://sites.google.com/a/ut.utm.edu/arabic-android/
http://blog.amr-gawish.com/39/arabic-language-in-android/
If you are not very familiar with rooting (and do not want to be ), and you HAVE to HAVE Farsi in your phone, than go for the HD2, buy it from your country so it would come with Farsi by default.
BTW, in Google android issues, the number two ranked issue on the Android list is "arabic (and other right-to-left) language support for android". many people are asking for it.

Very Thanks Dear Irkan
I want to know more about rooting and Its manner If you can please ...
And that Is rooting possible for android 2.1 now? If it isn't ; so what's the duty ?
Thanks a lot
well, .. it is possible (the Nexus one has been rooted) but i think (and many other think the same) that the Desire rooting (even though that it has Android 2.1 as Nexus 1) the procedure of rooting might be a little different, but it will happen when the device reaches the developers. and we are going to find out.
My best answer to you is to wait for the device to reach the devs here (probably 2 weeks from now) and see when the device is rooted, after that you can safely order the Desire, and follow the procedure of rooting the desire and then apply the Arabization (and Farsi-zation if I may add)
check this thread
Arabic/Farsi Language on nexus one.2 March 2010
the procedure of Arabizing the desire will be almost the same as the Nexus One (more or less), but the rooting process might be different, thats why you should wait and see how exactly the Desire is going to be rooted ...
Thanks Thanks Thanks Dear irkan

I do believe it's legal, but rooting your device will void your warranty.

Thank you very much,
But why will it void the warranty as it legal?
and Do you know that I should ask who (specific developer) to add 4 letters to Arabic languages to become Persian?
Thanks a lot
It will void the warranty because they need a scapegoat They need something to point to if your phone breaks, so they don't have to fix it for free Plus there's the off chance that you actually do break it by doing something root-related
Hi,
Has HTC Desire been root after this period ?

Is It completely similar to add Arabic/Farsi Language on nexus one ?

It supports part of the whole thing,

I don't read arabic (i can barely read and write English, i grew up in south London....!) so i wouldn't know if it's working right or not, but i've heard it's supposed to be quite good.
EDIT: turns out it is for SMS only. Sorry.

Anybody need anything? (new desire)

Hello,
I've been around on XDA for quite a few years, and i wouldnt have been this crazy about phones if it weren't for you guys.
I'm not sure, but I might be able to do something back. I'm receiving my Desire tomorrow, maybe somebody needs something from it? Maybe a dump or whatever, i'd be willing to help (just need some instructions on how to do that).
Let me know

My UK t-mobile one does not have arabic under locales (but it only has 6 choices)
I've bought mine 2 days ago. Looking at the locale i only have Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. So bear in mind that the phone may have different language and locations depending on where you bought it from. Clearly mine is an Eastern European version.
P.S: Amazing phone. I'm in love!

Got it from your local dealer? Does it have Baltic languages aswell? Not that i care, my phones are always on english.
I see they have added us(Baltics) in locale. On Hero sold here there were only the first five. I was hoping we get the Nordic one, but yeh... Eastern europe makes sense. But why not other countries then?
I really dislike the segmented markets and versions in technological devices...

desire test
i would like to test on Desire this:
Outlook contacts + calendar
-sync with Desire over the microUSB cable. does the Outlook Calendar + Condatcs sync without data being transferred to Google Gmail/Google Calendar and so on ?
- does the Sync happen automatically (like ActiveSync with Windows Mobile devices) on background in Windows XP/7 ... or do you have to start anything manually after you plug in the device ?
Browser with integrated flash video player:
- could you open www.youtube.com on the integrated google web browser and try to play videos in 360, 480, 720p ?
SD card:
- is the Desire shipped with SD card, or without ?
LCD Screen:
- does it glare a lot on sunlight ?
- is there any screen protector shipped with Desire ?
------
sorry it's not ROM cooking related, but i would be interested anyway, if you find the time to test and answer

Outlook contacts + calendar
-I know that the syncing is possible and you can set it to automatic, but not if its pushed through to G-Apps, i think not though
Browser with integrated flash video player:
- When you go to the regular youtube website, and the flashplayer is loaded, you see a big play button (no bar on the bottom). When you hit it, the youtube app pops up and plays your video. Good news though: theres an option for high quality video in there, which imo gives perfect quality (and i have high standards)
SD card:
- Mine came with a class 2 4GB microsd, already in the phone (so htc put it there, all desire's should have one)
LCD Screen:
- I did notice in the bus today that its very reflective, but if you up the brightness to 100%, theres no problem at all.
- No, but you can buy them off ebay, theres a supplier in the UK that has an unending supply of 6packs for about 2 euro
* Note: it's not an LCD screen, but an amoled one
Also for anybody who's interested:
Due to the nature of the screen and the fact htc & google ignore websafe colors, some shades of grey look a little pinkish. Its not at all anoying or ugly, and its barely noticable. Still, its there.
Hope this helped you,
Nick

I went from the Diamond to the Magic (second android phone) and never looked back. Seriously, once you've tried android, you will wonder how you could ever live with WM.
Try borrowing a device from a friend or ask for a demo in a store?

Clovek1 I had a diamond too and yesterday I got the Desire...Man let me tell you, it's a huge step forward.
The only thing bellow "great" is the camera but I don't really care. The interface is fantastic and the speed of the thing is really amazing.
I have the same problem with the locales, as it displays only 6(the greek language isn't there), but I got MoreLocale 2.
Also I can't see the paid apps as they're not supported in Greece atm.
i am using Outlook Calendar synchronization in my office quite often (daily). The Google Calendar is blocked in my company, for security reasons.
Therefore i would like to be sure, that the synchronization really works.
btw. how do you transfer your contacts from Windows Mobile to Android ? Through Outlook ?

It depends on the version of Exchange being used by your company.
Exchange 2007 is syncing calendar just fine but Exchange 2010 has a problem in that it initially syncs but then generates an error that causes all mail/contact sync to fail (stop syncing calendar and mail/contacts sync fine again). I can't vouch for Exchange 2003 as I don't know anybody using it with Android.
Having just moved from WinMo to Android the contacts migration is seamless - you're talking to an Exchange Server, give it the right credentials and all your contacts and mail will flow sweetly. My old Kaiser hasn't been plugged in to a PC to Sync ever - and neither will the Desire. Why, when it can all be done over the air via Exchange.
Now if only Tasks would be supported as standard without having to buy something extra.
Rgds
Aaron
Yes there appears to be a problem with Exchange 2010. When the Desire arrived here, I was still connecting successfully to Exchange 2003. Since then we have upgraded to Exchange 2010, and Calendar sync now fails. As you say, it fails badly enough to stall mail and contacts sync too.
By disabling Calendar sync on the phone, mail and contacts then sync nicely. Enable Calendar sync, and if your Exchange is 2010, it al goes wrong.
I note you are syncing fine to Exchange 2007, so this must be a weakness with Exchange 2010, but it is hard to blame the Exchange server, as my iPods/iPhones sync just fine with Exchange 2010.
So in summary, there appears to be a show-stopper sync error on HTC Sense Exchange 2010 support which thwarts Calendar sync. Here's hoping there is a fix for this shortly, as the Desire becomes a no-go for corporates until this is sorted.

Adding keyboard languages to HTC Desire

I have recently bought an unbranded HTC Desire and after going through three such devices I am extremely frustrated by both the mentality of HTC and their short-sightness.
My issues stem from the fact that every HTC Desire in the UK seems to be region-locked, something that has been admitted by the HTC support people. As a result the 'locale' function seems to recognise at best only 2-3 countries in the world with all the delights that entails such as time, date, radio and more importantly keyboard not being able to switch between different languages even though the handset clearly suppports all european languages.
This simple functionality, available in almost every other handset I checked out (blackberries, nokias, Sony-Erickson, Nexus, etc.) seems to leave HTC unfazed for a product promoted as a flagship model.
I am new to android and following a friend's suggestion before giving up completely, I am posting here with the hope of being pointed in the right direction.
The phone currently only supports French, English, Italian and Spanish. I want to add German and Greek and I do not care about having auto-correction or a dictionary for these languages. I would be content if I could just use the default keyboard and type (I do not care about locale either, english is fine).
There is a MoreLocale app on the Market that might help.

Read / Write Arabic in Desire

Hi guys
It's been nearly 10 hours since i start searching in this great forum and around the internet for a solution to enable on my HTC desire to read arabic, and i finally came a at this page which will resolve the issue until we have an official full Arabic support from Google or HTC.
What you need is 2 things :
1 - Mirsal
http://android.azizus.info/?page_id=4
Application to let you read SMS in Arabic
2 - Ibrahim Keyboard (same great developer)
http://android.azizus.info/?page_id=20
Once you have both .. you'll be to read/write Arabic on your device.
Hope this can help your problem
Long live XDA-Developers
edit: if moderators can edit the subject into ( solution to read write Arabic in htc desire ) it will be better to help newbies.
Thanks much, greatly appreciated! (I'm still learning the rich language)
EDIT: still only recognizes Arabic input/text in SMS. Anywhere else and the language just shows up as boxes.
-----------------------------------
- Sent via my HTC Desire -
same here ,I have Microsoft exchange and I am looking for a software that can display Arabic emails
Yes it will only enable arabic in SMS and Contact .. not the whole system
for Microsoft Exchange i dont know .. becaue GPRS is not workikng on my device, dont konw why
i'll try to make it work then try some applications to have arabic enabled on Exchange.

[Q] Arabic Support fro Desire HD 'ACE'

Greeting, I am expecting my ACE coming weekend, with full eagerness. Anybody managed to replace font files for this release to support Arabic language.
Hi. Its support Arabic but don't have rtl support yet. We need root for that...
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
You can use a program called 'Mirsal' in the meantime. It can read and write arabic text messages and it supports RTL. You do not even need root to install it!
For some reason it is no longer on the Android market, so you will have to google it.

I don't know about numbers, but on my friends HTC Wildfire it can read and write arabic from right to left fine.
Appreciate your reply, however, the app [Mirsal] is just a workaround to the issue. We would like to incorporate the Arabic fonts natively on the device, like what was done on the Nexus One scenario. Actually latest news on N1, they added the Arabic support part of Cyanogen ROMs
Even if someone builds CM6 for the DHD, you won't be able to flash it, since we don't have full root

the froyo and the DHD is sopport hebrew and arabic fonts,
so we can write/read or see websites, sms and users in our language.
i issue is RTL support that missing, for exeple - if we writing numbers
we will see it up side down - 1234 will show as 4321 and so...
mind me for asking, cant we implement RTL VIA RUU like mentioned here?

yes it support Arabic front but he don't have LTR.
I'm not sure if this is relevant or not - especially as I'm not using a DHD - but on my Xperia X10 (UK generic 1.6) I use Handcent SMS. My girlfiend is from the UAE and I sometimes send her texts in Arabic and Handcent seems to support both Arabic font and RTL.
So maybe try Handcent SMS (available free on Market).
I appreciate I could be way off the mark here though so apologies if I've caused any confusion.

Froyo supports displaying the Arabic characters but not reshaping them.. so in case you are viewing Arabic text all the letters will be disconnected and not RTL.. hard to read.. in Hebrew as the letters don't need to be reshaped/connected it displays it fine but will get the reversing problem if a number is inserted.....
so the answer for the Arabic is no..
check this thread for a temp solution

Arabic now is supported by @alsanad
My DHD, bought in Canada, reads Arabic RTL the only problem is that the letters are disconnected. Supposedly Gingerbread will sort this out, whenever it hits the DHD that is.
if you have root you can flash CynogenMod 7 gingerbread and it has full arabic support with connected letters
that's the only one i found so far.
