At least you can hold your desire as you want when calling someone x) hahah
If you want an FM Radio, go the Desire. The only flaw from my personal opinion is that Iphone does not have an FM Radio. Having said that, I'm going to get an Iphone 4, as well, when it's finally released.

Wow, that's the largest understatement ever....
I've posted something similar to this in the off-topic section about the iPhone...but here we go again!
The Good
Long battery life
Thin form factor
Impressive screen resolution and pixel density
Excellent camera for stills
Excellent video recording capability (720p)
The Bad
Relatively small screen compared to the competition.
Non removable battery
MicroSIM
Nonstandard plug for charge and sync
(Infamous) Antennae hardware design fault
The iOS
Obstrusive Notifications
Home screen is useless; just an application launcher
No native file system
No smart dialing
No fullscreen mode in browser
No text reflow in browser

Personally I think your choice needs to come down to the software, if you want android then its desire all the way, if iOS floats your boat then go for iphone. In terms of hardware they arent all that much different when looking at future proofing.
The front facing camera doesnt appeal to me as ive never made a video call yet in all the years of owning a 3g phone. I would say one of the biggest pluses of the iphone is the video recording though but this antenna bug would really put me off getting one.
As has already been said, you won't get an objective answer it seems in the Desire forum. This is borne out by the responses you've already had.
The iPhone 4 is a very fine phone indeed. Like everything, it has its plus and minus points. In terms of hardware, the iPhone 4 probably has the best overall hardware of any device out there (antenna problems not withstanding), and in software it has a very good OS (iOS4) which is somewhat crippled by Apple themselves (e.g. multitasking), and has the most complete and coherent application base out there.
For me, the biggest problem is the Apple ecosystem that is built around the phone, and the draconian control that Apple have over that ecosystem.
In my opinion, Apple treat their iPhone customers as if they've leased the device from Apple, rather than actual owners of the device.
This is coming from an Apple "advocate" - I have an iMac and a Macbook which are think are both excellent. However, I also have several Windows PC's, so I'm not a rabid fanboi.
So, I'm firmly in the Android camp, and the Desire has very capable hardware attached to a very good implementation of the Android OS (including Sense!).
One other factor which is definitely significant here in the UK are the costs of the plans associated with getting an iPhone subsidized under contract. The iPhone 4 plans are all expensive, and unless you are prepared to pay at least £45 a month you still have to pay towards the phone. Coupled with derisory data limits (usually 1GB or less), it's a bad deal. FWIW T-Mobile in the UK has a 3GB "limit" for all Android handsets and you can usually get a Desire free on £30pm contracts.
Regards,
Dave
This is a desire forum ..... the end
For me the only reason that iPhone 4 is better than the Desire is the 720 video recording. That's it.
Since there is a rumor that with Froyo you will get the 720 video recording, so iPhone 4 is no way better than Desire.
So go and get a Desire, you won't be disappointed.
I find the Desire is much better.
Have a look at this http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/06/10/apple-ios-3-4-vs-android-2-1-eclair-2-2-froyo-fight/
There are NO issues with the new iPhone 4.
Just to recap:
- Can't hold it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ixIHyEPO5g
- Proximity sensor messed up. http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/29/is-the-iphone-4-having-proximity-sensor-troubles/
- Multitasking sucks. http://blogs.bnet.com/businesstips/?p=7957
- Exchange doesn't work. http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/06/29/ios-4-exchange/
- Breaks from one foot. http://flirtationcreations.com/blog/2010/06/first-iphone-4-broken-after-one-foot-drop/ . Trips water sensors in steamy rooms
- ios4 broke many features
- You get some bodily fluids on it directly from the CEO. http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/iphone-4s-yellow-spot-issue-goes-away-with-a-bit-of-time/
- The usual reasons why the old os sucked, they are still there
But these are NON issues ! Actually none of these issues exist. See this for confirmation: http://www.fakesteve.net/2010/06/there-is-no-spoon.html
I've never been much of an iPhone fan and the link below reassure me even more

Apple make some decent products.
Apple charges a very high premium for their products (ie desktops, you can build better yourself for a lot cheaper).
Apples iPhone 4 is not amongst their decent products.

Hey,
I am confused and i dont know which one to buy.
Which one would you choose and why?
This is a Desire forum so Desire is going to win
I would say either iPhone or Desire, as samsung in my experience makes crappy products.
Try what's best for you, if you like all the customisation and stuff, go for the desire
if you like a smooth, reliable experience, get the iphone.
try them out for yourself before deciding, people here will just try and tell you that android rules and anything to do with apple sucks.
HTC Desire if you want cool Android Action from HTC and you dont want to spend money for a silly fruit!
iPhone 4G if you want to have the best Hardware and that little apple on the case but only if you dont have to save money...
Like the first poster said... You will probably find the Desire win because it is the Desire section.
My opinion - Desire is, and always will be, my love but that new iPhone sure does look amazing. I think that if I were to buy a phone right now, I would actually wait for the iPhone, the only thing that might stop me is the price. But hey, that's just my opinion, it's going to be your investment so you should make sure that it is right for you.
Well i want to buy a phone in the next month or so and i want one which would easily last 1-2 years without becoming obsolete.
thanks for the replies so far..
Though I would say if you wanted a Desire - to go for the Nexus One instead. if you don't want your phone to become obsolete soon then the N1 is your best bet on the Android platform.
and is it because it would get direct updates from google?
Also, I try to watch youtube videos on my current phone(samsung jet) and it completely fails.
I was wondering, can 720p video be played on android 2.2?

In that case, I'd go with the iPhone. You're guaranteed to get updates all that time, I mean they've only just dropped the original iPhone, so I think that shows a lot.

yeah because of that, and also stock android is a lot smoother and less buggy than android with sense.
erm i can't see any reason why not, but when would you want to when the screen is only 400 px high in landscape?
Umm to view the video in higher quality?
Well im going to buy a new smartphone next month and I need to decide which phone to get between the HTC Desire and the Samsung galaxy S..
I decided to go with the Galaxy S since its hardware is way better..
And they said that its gonna have the 2.2
the only thing u will lose is the Sense UI (never had it..)

720p refers to it's resolution (the number of pixels) as a 720p video has 720 horizontal lines of pixels.
but the desire display only has 400 horizontal lines of pixels. So whats the point of having all those extra pixels when the screen can't display them?
You need an HD screen to get the benefit of HD video, like an HD TV or computer monitor.
But it is quite possible that android will take over apple. And I also read that htc will soon release a phone with a 1.5 ghz processor. And I don't think that nexus one is available in the uk.

N1 is available on vodafone at least, but not as good a deal as the desire.
and don't worry about processor speeds, they're pretty meaningless nowadays.
All the decent modern smartphones do everything instantly, the only place they're going to be different is benchmarks, which don't mean anything anyway.

The Desire can, but in really awful quality because it uses the flash lite player. If you use the youtube app you get better quality videos.
This is another reason why the N1 is better, it lets you play youtube videos from the browser without using the flash lite player which is awful quality.
Can not root the desire and install the stock android rom?
If the YouTube app is anything like the mobile website for YouTube, then it's no good.
I`m a bit confused right now ... i really loved the HTC evo 4G but since i live in India ... i cant get my hands on that...
The only good phones i am left with are desire , xperia x10 or samsung galaxy
Pls let me know which one should i go for
And i wanted to know how are the games in desire .. are they even comparable to iphone games??... and can it be jailbreaked like the iphone????
heres a youtube vid of nova on the desire
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Vn2DuPeE-E
Avoid the Xperia X10, mainly due to the terrible terrible battery life and the fact it's still running Android 1.6, as well has having much lower performance than the Desire and Nexus One which use almost identical internals.
As for 'jailbreaking', in Android circles the equivalent is known as 'rooting' to enable you to install all the awesome custom firmwares available on this forum to enable new features, speed up your device or even get the latest versions of Android before they're even released.
Games-wise, there is a decent selection, but truthfully the iPhone is the king of mobile gaming. I haven't found this to be a problem however, as I realised after owning an iPod Touch before my android phone that with most games I'll play them for a few minutes when I download them and then never really touch them again. I use music, video, email, social networking and general internet browsing far more.
As for Desire vs Galaxy S...kind of hard to choose.
Galaxy S Pros and Cons:
+ Large, amazing Super AMOLED screen
+ Most powerful Android device out, especially it's GPU (for 3D games)
+ DivX video support
+ Video-out if you want to connect it to a screen
+ Reportedly great sound quality for headphones
+ Battery life better than most other high-end Android phones
- The phone itself looks like a cheap iPhone ripoff (why Samsung why?!)
- Samsung use their 'TouchWiz' interface on top of Android which looks kind of ugly and adds little
- Samsung don't have a good track record with updates...they've confirmed Froyo but no word on whether it'll ever get anything above that
- Reportedly all custom roms will need to be based off Samsung's official roms, so won't have as large a variety as HTC phones
- Apparently many users have had GPS problems
HTC Desire Pros and Cons:
+ Huge variety of custom roms
+ Similarity with Nexus One means since Nexus One gets updates first, most can be quickly ported to Desire
+ HTC Sense interface on top of Android looks great and improves usability (especially the widgets)
+ HTC's default apps for mail, weather, etc are extremely well designed
+ Will most likely be able to run Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) ported from the Nexus One once it's released
+ Very good build quality and nicer-looking hardware
- Battery life not as good
- Smaller screen that's regular AMOLED rather than Samsung's new variety
- Not as powerful as Galaxy S
Hope that helps! I'm currently in the middle of deciding between the Desire and Galaxy S myself, so done a fair bit of research and tried both out.

Which battery meter are you using?
vinayendra: since you mentioned only games in your post, my advice to you is to avoid android platform and go with Iphone if games are your priority...
If you still need to choose between these 3 phones, Galaxy would be your choice, cause it's better GPU will be advantage with games
I cant speak for the galaxy S but having used both desire and the xperia the desire wins hands down. The xperia is really laggy and the old version of android is a deal breaker. Once sony pull their fingers out and update the xperia it might be a different story but I dont think we will see that for a few more months yet
the only advantage the xperia has is the large internal apps storage, you dont need to root it if your wanting loads of apps unlike the desire

If you have access to those phones in India go and try them out in person because you won't have a clue on what everyone is going on about except for prior experience on your old Touch.
An Android phone is perfect if you live your online life through Google, if you don't I suggest you move.
An iPhone is known for simplicity and just working until you somehow manage to get yourself into the zoom feature and you're screwed unless you know the zoom out function. These high end phones are true powerhouses in pocket computing and are for more than showing off to your mates that you have a cool phone. If that's all you're going to do, you deserve an iPhone. If you're rolling up your sleeves and learning how to individualise yourself from every other Android user out there then you will quickly learn about live wallpapers, widgets, shortcuts and button combinations. Go further than that and its roms, themes, radios, adb commands so on and so forth.
Know what you want and shop according to it. One of these phones will tick most if not all of your needs and wants. Or something in the near future will. Between the 2 phones, out of the box you are looking at a difference of interface more than anything else. Really suggest you go try them out.

I'd mostly agree with that.
Android phones really are 'enthusiast' phones, in the sense that you get out of them what you put in. For example, customising it to work exactly how you want and look how you want it to look.
The iPhone is made as a very controlled system, so you have only the absolute minimum freedom (ie: change your wallpaper or order of icons). This is ideal for many people who want something that just 'works' and has been tuned to be an intuitive experience for the majority of people.
Android is based around making your phone uniquely yours, such as through the use of the homescreens to fill with whatever you want (widgets, controls, shortcuts, folders, etc). What this means is it requires more time and attention than an iPhone, but the end result is a phone and way of working that is of your own design.
Think of it like Lego:
- the iPhone is where you follow the instructions and get what is shown in the picture on the box (which can annoy people who want to do their own thing).
- Android is where you are given a pile of lego bricks to build whatever you want, so it's far more personalised even if it's not as polished as the iPhone (which can confuse or put of people who prefer a guiding hand and it to be done for them)
I'm happy to sacrifice some polish in the interface for the chance to really make my phone mine, but there are many who feel the other way. That's why it's great we have the oppurtunity to choose between Android and iOS (and soon Windows Phone 7, which seems like a halfway point between the two).
thanks for all that ... Now i am convinced to go for a desire which i will buy sometime this week
i have a small doubt ( a n00b one) .. whats the use of "rooting" and installing ROM`s???.. is it the same as "jailbreaking" in iphone where i can install paid apps and games for free and play with my looks ?? ... or is there anyother use??
i have HTC Desire which i bough from a friend in England, (i live in Seattle) and absolutely love it. My co-worker has Tmobile Samsung Vibrant. Ill give my impressions and quick pros and cons, i may sound little bias but here it is.
Samsung Galaxy Pros
Large SuperAMOLED screen, true 800x480 res, multitouch (Which, while is brighter than the Desire, not that much better, almost cant tell the difference.)
Better battery life, Galaxy also comes with 1500 mAh battery whereas Desire come with 1400 mAh ( again only one day of test with moderate use)
Better GPU
16 Gb of internal storage (which is a huge plus)
720p @30 frames video capture (which also is possible on the Desire with a custom ROM)
Cons
Built quality is extremely cheap, back is shiny plastic which is prone to scratches
Has ugly iphone 3GS style bezel around the screen
No camera flash (this one is a huge let down by Samsung which is beyond any comprehension)
Ugly UI which is a blatant iOS rip off (this one may be strictly preferential depending if you like iOS look or not)
Samsungs proven lack of support track record
Not clear whether gonna have large dev support on XDA
External speaker is horrible, tiny sound (Desire is the same)
That is all i can think of at the moment
Desire Cons
Uses old Clear pad 2000 touch panel which lacks true multitouch support or supports it in a broken way (you can google Nexus one touch screen problems, there is 70 pages plus thread about it)
Uses Cheap Pentile pixel arrangement, which some argue is better for media but horrible if ou spend most of the time reading text on your device. ( you can google Pentile on Nexus One, Anandtech.com has very informative article about this)
Eternal speaker is horrible, sound is tiny and quite
video capture is crap
When using on low brightness, screen has pink hue
Battery life is mediocre
Pros
Built quality is way better than Galaxy, also looks sophisticated compared to Galaxy
Camera flash
Huge support from XDA developers since it is almost identical to Nexus One
Runs Sense, although i equally hate Sense, it is a lot better that TouchWiz
Has hardware buttons (this one is a deal breaker for me as Galaxy touch sensitive buttons are unresponsive at times and generally suck)
AMOLED is almost as good as Galaxy's ( aside from cheap ass touch panel that HTC used on Desire and Nexus One, why HTC why)
That is all i can think of at the moment. I am eligible for an upgrade with Tmobile, but i think ill keep the Desire. Just better phone aside from crappy screen. Hope this helps

I LOVE ANDROID PHONES ESP. DESIRE BECAUSE (OF ITS SPEED, SIMPLICITY AND UI) IT DOESNT CRASH ON YOU WHILE CALLING, DOESNT RESTART RANDOMLY, ETC WHICH I HAD WITH ALMOST ALL MY WM 6.5 DEVICES WITH THE LAST BEING XPERIA X1.
BUT ON AN ANOTHER NOTE I WOULDNT MIND TESTING DIFFERENT OSs LIKE I DO ON MY VAIO OR DELL. DONT TELL ME YOU PEOPLE ARE NOT TEMPTED.
AND YES I AM CONSIDERING BUYING A USED HD2 TO JUST TEST OUT THESE OSs.
SORRY FOR THE CAPS.
IMHO I don't care One os is enough to personalize, save contacts, sms, photos etc....with two or more I guess I'd get crazy!!
I have to agree - its nice to try/trial (I have a HTC Touch HD with the SD bootable version of android) and to play with - but one OS is decent enough I think...
There was a poll on the hd2 thread a little while ago and it looked like about half of the users were using an android OS now - so as long as you have that option you're doing alright!
I don't rate the HD2, I had it for a year. It's got a crap battery life, it's big, the one single bar for all of the buttons isn't a brilliant design. I don't care much for dual booting any of the five or more OS's it can run, the Desire is a far better device and I am glad I switched.
I have both the HD2 and Desire. For a every day android device, my preference goes to the Desire. IMO the Desire is a native android device and will always run android better. Even with nand on the HD2, it still has it's problems.
hi everybody .. just finished to look the video of the Htc Sensation and i hope someone will port this rom on the DHD ..
PS : sorry for my english

You got to be kidding me..... How can something like 'Sense' be to heavy to run on a 1ghz processor? Most app's don't even require this.

+1 its all about the business tactics.
we are building the sensation rom for dhd, will take some time though.....lots to do
Yup, you can follow the devs working on it in the dev thread! They have it sort of working now, although the different screen resolution seems to be a problem. However, they say it's working very smooth! No lag at all! So the 1Ghz is not a problem.
Just have to be patient for the resolution to be fixed... which seems to be a not so easy fix...
It runs fine on a DHD, I loaded the sense 3 alpha rom and it ran perfectly fine. It's currently non-functional and the resolution isn't ported yet.
+1 It's just marketing.
Maybe HTC is thinking on the battery life of their old phones.
Our 1GHz CPU has alot more work to do for the Sense 3.0 UI and they can't just shrink the already bad battery life.
That would make sense, as the Flyer is getting the new UI right? And it has the same CPU/GPU but a way bigger battery
now take a look at it again..
what is so special or surprising in this?
Could be to do with the current battery, but if you look at the improvements CoreDroid have made to their ROM, they have managed to get a much faster Sense ROM, but with much better battery, so surely HTC would be able to do this? CoreDroid claim to have better battery by 50%, if HTC managed to do the same, running a ROM made originally for a dual-core processor would result in the same battery life that we have now. Just think about it and you'll understand.

It's HTC marketing, for people who don't know much about phones to make them upgrade.
True, but most people that get Android tend to know what they are doing, am I not correct? If you have never used Android before, and your phones due an upgrade, surely you would go for an iPhone, due to the ease of use and the general market share the iPhone has. And even if you did go for a top spec Android phone such as the Desire HD, why, just a few months after you have bought it, would you go out and buy a new phone just because if a software update and a few internal changes? As far as I'm concerned, if it is HTC using ways of Marketing, then they will be loosing me as a customer. I've gone from a Desire to a Desire HD on a contract upgrade, I only chose the Desire HD due to the updated sense, and that's gods honest truth, and now, 5 months later, I'm being told that my phones spec doesn't match up to that required of the new update, despite the fact that to-date the DhD is the most powerfules phone on sale in the UK. HTC's gonna loose customers if they keep showing off shiny new things, and not giving it to so-called 'respected customers'.

Yeah I know what you mean, but 5 months is a long time in the technology world. Their marketing will try to convince anybody to upgrade since old stuff is not "good enough".
Desire HD is a SICK phone, I don't really see why to upgrade from it and that's maybe what they are tying to achieve with this marketing?
As you've said, noobs don't usually buy an android and if they do they probably go back to a iphone, so who are they trying to fool?

Thanks for helping confirm what I put, HTC are fooling nobody because I doubt a lot of people are going to get the Sensation despite the beautiful UI. W have already proven it can work on the Desire HD, and your right it is a sick phone! I reckon HTC will eventually release the full 3.0 update, due to demand, but it will be well after the Sensation release.

well, don't go on the same road i went on, I bought a samsung wave, thinking the vivid colors and hd recording was the real deal, instead after a month or two the hype ended and it became boring.
lack of applications and poor policies of sammies(like no VoIP for BADA OS , no multitasking) made me hate it…same thing will happen to the N9 it is doomed from the start (or least it’s platform) and you think developers would care to make apps for that kind of a niche product and OS
I switched to a Xperia Arc , and it rocked me like a hurricane
I have used the EVO 3D it’s fun but you’ll switch to 2d most of the time rather than 3d(3d photos max out at 2mp I think..not sure) but it’s impressive …but not as sexy as me ARC
but do what you like ….it’s your life, you make the rules
