Facebook works.......almost - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running the EvolutionV8 ROM and I made the fix to get Facebook to sync my contacts and all the contacts got synced except for 1.........myself. I have no contact entry for myself and if I create a new contact and try and merge it with a FB contact I don't see the facebook contact representing myself. Any ideas?

Wait wait...what?!
You want a contact on your phone for, yourself? If my human brain is confused, imagine how the phone feels!
Dang man..don't need to mess with it like that!
Anyhow, let me try and get it right. You want a Facebook contact for yourself to show up on your phone (I guess some people talk to themselves, but this kinda goes a little far.)
I'll bet if you create a new Facebook account, and add all the contacts to it, including yourself as a contact, it'll work. I think it probably has something to do with Facebook not really putting YOU as an actual contact. I don't know if that makes any sense or not. I'm just confused now.
You are not a contact on Facebook, you are you, you can't contact yourself on facebook. Ie, you can't send yourself a poke! Unless you had 2 accounts of course, sending pokes back and forth (yeah, thats just weird.) SO since you aren't a contact on Facebook, a contact on your phone with your name isn't going to sync with Facebook!
I think that answers the question, let me know if I'm waaay off base here.

Let me clarify:
I want my phone to know that my facebook account represents the same person that owns the phone. When I type a MMS message I want to see my FB profile picture representing me in the MMS conversation.

Ahh, gotcha. Hmm. I'm running Toast .03 and it works just fine for me, but I think the ROM you're talking about has Facebook issues (or you wouldn't have had to "get it to work")
Might be an issue best fixed in that ROM's thread? The maker of the ROM probably needs to integrate a full Facebook fix.

Contact picture Google/Facbook problem

Before I got my desire I sorted out my Google contact just right and added lovely edited pictures, mostly from Facebook. They all synced fine. However, after linking said contacts with Facebook it uses that picture instead. Some people have awful pictures, so I click the link on the top right of the contact, and then click the picture on the left and select the Google picture.
Job done, or so I thought. It then later reverts to Facebook. Does anyone else have this problem? Any fixes?
I have no fix for this but if anyone also knows how to only sync specific Facebook contacts and get rid of others that I don't want clustering up my phone that would also be great
This is one thing that I hate Android and Google.
Why can't they implement a good way, crisp and nice contact photo?
Look at Google Contacts from GMail, the photo contact is bloody ugly in terms of image quality. And the resolution is small.
I just cannot believe this, that after 2 - 3 years, the Android google contacts is awful.
I am proudly show Android to people, make them say "Wow" ... but I shamely hide showing them the contact photo. When I got a call, the photo is damn blurry.
Is this a storage issue? No!
Network speed issue when syncing over the air? Probably! But why not add a way to select custom picture from phone and mark it to be NOT OVERIDDEN when [email protected]
And what's that automatic contacts addition on GMail! Duplicate contacts!
Then came HTC trying to do Facebook integration and whatnot, bloody mess up with linking contact, photo not shown.
I spent some hours to sort this out, and finally gave up. I accept that this is one of the weakness of Android ... contact photo is awful.
People screamed already since long ago, but no fix from Google.

That is another issue with this Facebook intergration. I don't need all the people on FB on some of the phones contact list.
I have a fix of sorts for the contact pictures. Goto the Facebook sync settings, and uncheck 'Sync contacts'. Syncing Facebook no longer changes contact pictures! Not sure how it will effect Facebook once new people are added though.

Settings, Accounts & Sync, Facebook for HTC Sense
I think the low res photo problem is an HTC dialer problem. the contact photos looked fine on my Milestone.
i have the same issue, everytime i sync with my pc it changes the contactpicture to the one from facebook.
i have automatic sync deactivated. so after every sync with my pc, i have to set all the pictures again, and i get tired of if.
no solution for that problem? i dont know why they let you choose a picture, and after a sync its overwriting your setting again. it should be somehow protected, after a manual set of the picture.
i am very new to android, so maybe somebody else knows.
my pics have been fine i think that the facebook intergration is a usefull feature but when u click the pic choose phone instead of the other options

Facebook contacts with numbers showing

Hey all,
Just received my Desire and loving it. My only issue so far is that even though I've selected in the People app only to display Google contacts there seems to still be Facebook contacts appearing, albeit only the ones who have entered phone numbers into their Facebook profile.
This causes duplicate entries for the same person in messaging apps (default and Handcent) and in the People app it seems to prefer to show the Facebook contact details rather than the Google ones.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Russ
I have exactly the same problem
are those the contacts that are LINKED to facebook contacts, but not actually facebook contacts?
oh, and you will get du0plicates appearing in third party apps. all that unticking them in people does is hide them in that app. the rest can still see them.
Yes, the linking has happened automatically, unfortunately it doesn't stop the contact showing up twice. For example, I have a friend Hailei, she has an entry in my google contacts with her phone number, this contact is linked to her facebook profile on which she has a fake contact number.
If I create an SMS and type in Hailei as the recipient I get presented with both the real number and her fake facebook number and there's no way to stop this happening. This happens with the standard Messaging app or with Handcent.
in the sms you will get that, yes.
like i said, just because you have hidden the facebook contacts in people, it does NOT hide them in any other application, as they are still downloaded to the phone.
the only way to get rid of the duplicates is to sing out of facebook for HTC sense. not ideal, but hopefuuly it'll get fixed later as it's not an ideal way for it to work.
this is far from ideal esp if numbers match sat tmobiles ie every time they send me a text it date it'd from a contact and my fiancee is then why they sending you texts and I have to show her to prove it. we need to pressure HTC on this to get a fix or at least the ability to delete them from the phones address book. also a side question if anyone knows a way to link the phone button to the people app so o get that come up instead it would be great ie remaping it or something
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Anybody know anyone with a Nexus One to confirm if this is an Android 2.1 issue or a HTC Sense on 2.1 issue?
It would be nice if you could import the facebook contacts one at a time into your phonebook, not just as a whole.
I was lucky and found out the whole facebook thing as soon as I started my phone, managed to delete my whole contacts, uncheck the facebook contact sync and start again. No more pointless numbers from people I would never want to phone anymore, but means I can't get pictures up for my contacts.
Handcent SMS now has an option to hide social network contacts, although I don't actually have access to that option, it's in the release notes for the latest version which I have but the option in Settings doesn't appear, I'm not alone on this so must be a bug, hopefully quickly fixed and that puts an end to my problems!

Syncing Facebook contacts into phonebook is actually a Sense function, i.e. part of the HTC's "People" program.
Yeah, agreed: this is an annoying issue... Just because I want to get Facebook photos for my contacts and their status update does not mean I want ALL their details of EVERY Facebook friend being stored on my phone as a contact.
Even more problematic is how Sense handles phone numbers... It will pull phone numbers from Facebook and (seemingly randomly) may overwrite your setting for their phone number.
Example:
For contact "Bob", you set his phone number as +447900000, however, Bob has his Facebook phone number set as 447900000 (notice how the + is missing, because Bob doesn't know that you need the + there and anyway, who cares, it's only Facebook!)
Well, when Sense syncs the phone numbers, it may very well overwrite Bob's correct phone number (with the + prefix) with his Facebook phone number (which you will be unable to successfully dial)... and there is no way to turn this off without disabling the whole Facebook syncing functionality...
Very annoying!
Yup couldn't agree more. I did a reset like 5 mins after starting the phone, just because I didn't want to see the facebook armada on the list. While yes I did aggree to friend requests from my students ... I don't want to have all 200 of them as contacts in the phone prog ...

OK so this is what I did, but I have no idea whether it will work for you. I had a specific contact who I simply couldn't dial so I tried to find a solution.
NOTE: This does NOT solve the problem for all contacts, but read on and it may help...
First thing I did was go into my Google Contacts on my computer and deleted all the Facebook metadata in the "notes" section for each contact (as this was already pulled over from my HTC Hero tagging, and it seemed to have a different format.) << so if you are migrating from an older HTC Sense handset, then this may help you but WARNING: this will take a long time to do for each contact, and you will then need to re-associate every contact.
Next thing was to delete all the contact info off my device which you can do by going to Manage Applications > Contacts Storage and delete all the stored info.
Now go to sync settings and hit "Sync All" (or whatever it's called), or just wait and your phone will automatically re-download all of your contacts.
Now... some contacts will automatically get linked to their respective Facebook accounts and some will need to be set manually (I have no idea why they can't ALL be linked automatically, it seems kind of random...)
Anyway, what I have now found is that:
- Any contacts who were linked automatically: my settings override the Facebook settings
- Any contacts who were linked manually: Facebook settings override my settings
Either way, this is incredibly annoying and I think that HTC really do need to provide 2 extra options:
1. To not download ALL Facebook contacts, only to fetch additional attributes for existing contacts
and:
2. To give us greater control over what these attributes are (i.e. I do NOT want all of my contacts random/invalid phone numbers being imported to my device and cluttering everything up, just because I want their image & wall updates...)
I think you have to LINK the person.
I had the same, but when I LINKED the two 'names', it became one. I could choose which name I wanted to use, the Facebook name or the Google entry name.
You told in a previous post that the LINK was automatically done. This is not true. It only suggests, but you have to confirm by clicking the broken chain behind the name. Then it becomes a chain and the two entries becomes one.
I hoped this helps ya all.
I realised mine wasn't automatic, it was just already linked from when I had my Hero, I forgot it stores the link on your google contacts
Workaround:
Not ideal but fixes problematic phonnumber
When you have linked your gmail contact with fb account
Edit your gmail account and add any number as that persons phone.
Now you should see 2 numbers from that person.
Chosse that fake number as primary number.
Now edit gmail contact again and edit fake number with real one.
It will override fb number if it is in wrong format
Not ideal but at least you have proper number for that person
Using Sense 2.0 here.
Apart from the sms number suggestion thing (i can live with it, but is annoying...)
The real problem is that every facebook contact that has a phone number is synced without the + in the area code. This makes all contacts undialable!!! I checked that on facebook via browser the numbers are correct (they are without area code)!
We really need a solution for this problem, a solution that isn't disable facebook people sync (i want to keep photos etc.)

Delete Facebook contacts

Sorry to ask so many Qs but new...
have synced with facebook and of course there are many people there I never want to call or mail. How do I delete them? The manual says People>Menu>Delete then select, but every time I press Delete it defaults to one contact only (the last person I called and coincidentally a favorite) I must be doing something wrong? Can I do it by connecting to my PC and just editing the list?
If you go into your contacts then press the menu button, there is an option called show/view (an eye). There you can hide your contacs from facebook.
And if you want to link some of your normal phone contacts, you can go into each contact and link to facebook to get status updates and contact picture from fb.
Atleat thats how i did.
i have a different problem
someone i know has "yeah hold on" as their phone number on facebook
this results in any sms coming from a company (e.g. offers, discounts, junk etc) having her picture and details as the sender
how can i remove that one? it's bugging me, but before i tell her to sort out her FB account, i want to remove her from my phone book

One solution, ... a radical one though, ..... hard reset your device and dont sync your facebook contacts
not really a solution though is it?
anyone have any idea how to sort this problem out?!
you could try deleteing her from your facebook as your friends then resync your phone.
this may help you

[Q] Best way to sort/clear out contacts?

I don't know how I managed it, but recently I somehow accidentally synchronised all my contacts with my gmail contacts - to which there are HUNDREDS. Literally every person I have ever sent an email to or received an email from, all sorts, all jumbled together. It's even mixed in with all the people I follow on twitter and I can't get rid of them (I tried deleting the twitter account off the phone completely and even though it says it'll remove all twitter contacts, it doesn't).
It's looking as though I'm going to have to manually go through them all and delete every contact I don't want, then manually link all the contacts together that should be linked (facebook-google-sim-etc.).
What's the best way to do this? I have over 900 contacts now, whereas before I had maybe 40 or 50. Is there an app or a piece of sync software that'll let me do it from a computer? Doing from the phone is extremely slow and tedious =\

Contact Pictures?

i have linked all my contacts from my facebook with there numbers in my phone book, but only a few of my friends default pictures show up as there contact picture... is there any way to get all of there default pictures to be there contact picture? i cant for the life of me figure out why only a few friends pics are there any no one elses... any help?
I would guess it has to do with the difference in naming conventions between your phone and facebook. For instance someone may be John A. Smith on your phone's contacts, and John Smith on Facebook. That seems to be what happened when I synced mine anyhow.
I haven't looked into manually syncing up contacts, but it *may* be possible, or maybe not. In any case, this was my experience and what I assumed happened to make some pictures pull over and others not.
Hope it helps a bit!

that could be, but even the facebook friends i have that i dont have in my phone book dont have pictures... and the ones that i had in my phone book i linked to there facebook to its one contact... its really not a big deal but i just wanted to know if there was any specific way i could possiby get all there pictures to go to my contact list.
before joining them together you have to make one of the contacts as default then join and default one will be the first one including the picture
You have to pick which contact picture you want to use. The default will be the contact's GMail image. If the contact doesn't have a GMail image, it will use the FB by default. To change the image, go to contact, edit contact, and scroll down to the contact's FB information, touch the FB picture and select "Use this image". From there on out, your contact picture will always be his/her FB image.
