[Q] Best way to sort/clear out contacts? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know how I managed it, but recently I somehow accidentally synchronised all my contacts with my gmail contacts - to which there are HUNDREDS. Literally every person I have ever sent an email to or received an email from, all sorts, all jumbled together. It's even mixed in with all the people I follow on twitter and I can't get rid of them (I tried deleting the twitter account off the phone completely and even though it says it'll remove all twitter contacts, it doesn't).
It's looking as though I'm going to have to manually go through them all and delete every contact I don't want, then manually link all the contacts together that should be linked (facebook-google-sim-etc.).
What's the best way to do this? I have over 900 contacts now, whereas before I had maybe 40 or 50. Is there an app or a piece of sync software that'll let me do it from a computer? Doing from the phone is extremely slow and tedious =\

delete all the unnecessary contacts out of gmail?
when I synced gmail contacts to my phone and latter my FB account, it automagically linked the contacts that it found numbers in common with, I didnt have to do anything there!
are all the contacts on gmail now or between the different services?

Help understanding phonebook!

First of all, hopefully people will forgive me for not putting this with the other person's issues with the phone book as mine are slilghtly different.
Basically, I'm not understanding what is going on in my phonebook. Previously I was thinking that my Desire was syncing with All Contacts. But that's not what it's doing. Well, at least not only what it's doing. These are some of the issues that I'm having and I can't explain.
When I tap People - Menu - View, is shows "Google (781)" with "show auto GMail contacts" unchecked. However I have 339 entries in my GMail account for My Contacts and 653 All Contacts. I don't understand the difference.
When I have an unknown number contact me, and I add them to a known contact, "Jo Bloggs" say, when typing in "j - o - ..." I can have up to 3 entried pop up of Jo Bloggs. But then when I go to my People's list, I only see one entry. And in my All Contacts list, I only have one entry.
When I go to add an unknown contact to a known contact, in the list that pops up of (I'm assuming) all my contacts, there are contacts there that I do not see in my People list. I have unchecked "show auto GMail contact" so what is happening?
Can anyone PLEASE explain some of this. I'm trying to clear up my phone book and remove these duplicates and dead weight that I can't always see. It's obviously not simply a problem of syncing All Contacts when you don't want to.
Has anyone noticed any strange behaviour in their People's list???
I also find the phone book confusing along with the texting
I don't know if it is just me not use to smart phones
my last phone was the Sony Ericsson C 902
Did you sync with face book too? As that will added any contacts from their that have phone numbers.
I do not use anything like facebook
so no i did not
Nope. Haven't synced any social networking site at all.
I like to try and get one set sorted at a time. I have another account synced up for the calendar (not contacts). However they share exactly the same contacts so that wouldn't account for the mess of some contacts having no links, some having up to 3 that aren't duplicates. Not that I can find where these contacts came from anyway!
Why dont you copy the numbers you have from your old phone to the SIM card, .. and then import those contacts from SIM card to the Desire (if thats possible). try this before syncing with Gmail and see how it works
sorry to hijack thread but when you have an incoming call and you have a photo attached is it quite blurry or clear?
My sim card, and I think the sim cards of many other people, does not support multiple entries under one name. Nor does it support the amount of contacts I have in my GMail. Actually, I don't even think it supports the amount of information that can be held in phone storage/online accounts (stuff like addresses, birthdays etc)

yeah i know, it has very limited functionality, .. but if you got a correct name and phone number in your phone book, than you can sync the rest from Gmail if am not mistaken, this might help in having multiple accounts and such
now this is odd. I'm finding that every test contact I put in the phone, is not getting updated online. More than that, when it syncs, it deletes the contact.
I just tried:
1a Testgeneralgoogle
1a Test
and a third one I can't remember.
They just seemed to replace the former, then get deleted altogether.
But when I added "1a Testonline" to my online account, it appears on my phone.
Am I really the only person who is having this behaviour on their phone??? Is it simply a setting I'm missing?
Can someone try to add a test contact on their phone and see if their GMail contacts are updated properly, please.
(P.S. I should mention that I updated the number of a contact from my Desire, which showed up online. Then I updated their birthday at a separate time which didn't show up online and was reset to the incorrect date I had online.)
I'm getting my phone next week and I have a couple of questions about the phonebook too:
1/ I listed all my current contacts in GMail. So when I enter my GMail address on the phone, will it add them right away?
2/ If I enter my Facebook details and want to browse Facebook pics through the photos app, is it also gonna import my FB contacts? (I don't want it to)
Thanks!
@Ghisy. 1. Yes. 2. Haven't tried it.
I'm getting somewhere with finding out about the syncing issues I'm having. At least a little step. I've just found out that if I create a contact on the phone, and put in a birthdate, it won't appear in my online contacts when the phone syncs and it will get deleted when the phone does update. If there is no birthday, it syncs fine.
Kinda.
I'm finding that businesses are 50:50 when it comes to syncing. Some businesses are even not in my onine account anywhere and yet they're on my phone. And I have no idea where they came from but they are businesses that I have stored their details in the past.
This is almost seeming like a GMail issue as the phone can't make up contacts that I coincidently have used before.
Again, people are welcome to try at least to change a birthday or sync a new contact with a birthday and share what happens. I'd like to go to HTC saying the sync is not working fully, and it's happening to more than just me. If it's true of course.
I also seem to have some trouble wrapping my head around the phonebook (it shouldn't be that difficult should it?) After having read around on the forums I went to my google account and spent a while typing in my contacts which have synced fine as far as I can see.
I've set it under People to show only gmail contacts (and not sim)...but when I hit the "Phone" on the homepage it still shows my sim contacts...any way in changing this to show only gmail contacts? I'm a bit OCD-ish when it comes to this stuff. I like everything nice and neat
From what I've seen on my own, when you go into People - Menu - View, you can select which set of contacts to view. On mine at least, this config works for when tapping Phone and I don't see the other contacts.
Another aparent issue, I've just realised that I don't think there is a way to copy a phone contact to the synced (in my case Google) account. And on top of that, contacts that are sent via vcard, are sent to the phone. You don't seem to get an option.
But as always, I'm still trying to learn so I'm up for someone telling me I'm wrong.
anyone got an idea how to get rid of all the facebook contact/numbers that come up using phone function ? cuz i dont have in my contacts most of the people i have on facebook so its slightly annoying having to scroll through all of them

Yeah I've changed my "People" view to show only google contacts. Just weird that when I go to "Phone" all my sim contacts still show as well as the google ones. I want to keep my contacts on my sim...just want to hide them from view. Hmm more investigating required...
When you ad a new contact, you have to select "contact type" -> "Google" instead of "Phone", if you want the contact to be synchronized with you google contacts.
Argh! This is really annoying me now though -
I've updated my google account with all my contacts from my sim.
The on the phone have gone to People --> Menu --> View --> Google contacts
And that lets me just see my Google contacts in people view (great)
BUT when I hit "Phone" it shows both sim AND google contacts - is there an extra setting that I'm unaware of in the "Phone" section of the phone?
All my previous phones had an option to show only sim or only phone contacts but just can't find it on the Desire...I want to try and avoid deleting the contacts off my sim as I'd like to have a back up.
The only way I can see myself out of this is by exporting onto the memory card and then manually deleting all my sim contacts...which seems a bit of a long way round it. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? Or indeed does anyone else have this same problem?
If it helps, I bought this from CPW PAYG and using my o2 simplicity sim in it.
Thanks!
Do yourself a favour,
Log into google on your pc, and go to contacts, and put ALL your contacts in there.
Then delete them off the phones sim.
It may sound long winded, but once you get the hang off everything being in the cloud, the phone works very well.
All my contacts now have pictures, birthdays, email address's etc on google.com.
And they all automatically appear in my phone, my calender syncs, all my contacts birthdays appear on my phones calender etc,

Yep I should just do that - just wanted to see if there were any other options before . I'm guessing that it works both ways - when i add contacts on my phone it'll sync with my google account and add them on there as well right?

Is my Desire finding Gmail hiding contacts? Or just super smart and helpful?

In short, I've synced contacts between Gmail and my phone. However I have contacts on my phone, that do not appear on Gmail as I've mentioned in another post. In fact, I've got about 715 contacts that are supposed to be synced but 615 on my Gmail under All Contacts.
However I think I've figured something out.
Even though I've sent a support request to HTC, I don't think this is a handset issue simply because while some issues are probably initial sync duplicates or fragments (which I did find - I think) I've got entries like a restauurant which I know I have been to, but appears on my phone and not on Gmail. Now, considering the phone only got contacts from Gmail, either my Gmail has some data that I can't see (and I've searched in a few ways), or my phone is quite a smart smartphone.
Me thinks it's Google Gmail. Any ideas?

Some answers from HTC

I emailed HTC on a few issues so I could get answers straight from them. I'll put them down point by answered point.
Q1. When syncing with your Google account, is it possible to sync with "My Contacts" without syncing with "All Contacts"?
A1. It is not possible to sync just 'My Contacts', it would always be 'Google Contacts, or 'All Contacts'.
(This I already found out from them as it syncs All Contacts first before syncing subgroups. And My Contacts is essentially a subgroup of All Contacts.)
Q2. Is there any way of saving contact vCard (that have been sent to you) to your synced (in my case Google) account? When you are sent a vCal, you have options of where to save it, but no options seem to appear for vCard contact files.
A2. vCards can only be saved as 'My Contacts', they cannit be moved over to 'Google Contacts'. I'm afraid it is not something there is an option for.
Q3. Is there any way of copying/moving a contact saved only on the phone to the set of contacts synced with your Google account? i.e similar to copying/moving from sim to phone, but copying/moving from only on the phone to phone and Google account.
A3. Like in point 2., I'm afraid you cannot change the type of contact once it has been saved, i.e, a Google Contact is always a Google contact, and can't be moved over to My contacts.
Q4. I have noticed that I if I change a birthday for a contact on the phone, the change is always reset to the information held online. Also, I've noticed that if I create a contact on the phone that contains birthday information, that contact will be deleted when the phone syncs. However changing a birthday online will sync to the phone just fine. Am I doing something wrong?
A4. The calender information held online has precedence over the information held on the phone. So if you create a contact with calender information contained within it, when it syncs, the calender information is reomved...as well as the contact information attached. But no, you're not doing anything wrong.
Q5. Regarding the calendar, I have noticed that the Desire will not receive vCal sent via SMS. I am using the same sim card as was in my previous device where I could receive vCal through SMS as well as MMS. Is this a feature of the phone, a setting that I have missed or is the ability to receive vCal via SMS not present?
A5. With regards to vCal, its the latter I'm afraid-vCal cannot be received via SMS, only MMS, Bluetooth or email.
------------------------------------
The only one's that bother me are points 2, 3 and 4. I think we definitely need a way to save contacts sent to us to our synced accounts.
But I don't really get the syncing issue. Maybe he didn't answer my question properly because if you create a contact on the phone without a birthday, it will sync just fine.
The birthday issue is relatively minor. The saving to synced contacts, not so minor.
not convinced by any of those answers whatsoever!
However, not got one at the moment to debunk them.
Mine should arrive tomorrow or the day after, and then i shall be back to prove these answers as wrong, or as a fault in the phone!
Are these really HTC Contact app limitation ... or Google Android limitation related to Google GMail Contacts?
What if we change the contact app to something else from the Market?

does this mean the whole contact gets deleted or just the calendar entry ?

I'll be waiting! I could do chow down on some more info!
Thanks for the info!
The thing I don't get is this:
A1. It is not possible to sync just 'My Contacts', it would always be 'Google Contacts, or 'All Contacts'.
How can that not be a MAJOR problem?! I got hundreds of mail addresses in there of people I ever wrote to. If they would show up on my phone, that would make the whole sync feature useless.
Or am I missing something?
no entropy, you're not missing anything, it's a major issue to me!
I really hate to have ALL the contacts I wrote to or received a mail from, even for just one time only.
A little work-around is to check the contact option which says something like "only show contacts with telephone number", but it works in Phone contacts only: if you, from the menu, click on search contacts and look for something it will show up with EVERY contact you got in touch on gmail.
It really pisses me off
I am only importing My Contacts on my phone. I don't know how I did it, but I have My Contacts with a few groups,(about 60 contacts) and then I have All Contacts, with over 200 people. None of these show up on my phone...

That would be interesting to know!
Are you sure they are not showing just because, maybe, you checked "only show contacts with telephone number"?
Will you test ti by going on the main menu, and click "search contacts" and see you EVERY contact (mail only ones too I mean) shows up?
Thnx

I've been a bit troubled by contacts over the past couple of days and been spending a lot of time getting them sorted. All working pretty peachy now but it was a trial.
If may help to read my posts here and here.
goin' home, but will DEFINITELY check your posts!!!
Oh: since you look experienced on GContacts... any clues on progs to sync Outlook other than the good Go Contacts Sync? it works well, but it doesn't updates pics
Haha! Mine arrived this morning while i was at work so took the opportunity to pick it up from home on my lunch break!!
right here we go.
1) bollocks....kinda. It will sync those auto contacts, but you can hide them.
In people, press menu, view.
untick the box next to 'show google auto contacts'
2) bollocks. When you select to import from the SD card, it asks you which account you want to create the contacts under. just select google.
3) bollocks. See answer 2. Export contacts from phone to SD card. Delete copies on phone, import from sd card to google account.
4) i'm still looking at this but i suspect it is linked to facebook. I think it only downloads from facebook and so that overwrites what you put in. if you log out of facebook for HHTC Sense, i suspect the value you put in would appear.
5) this appears to be correct.
However, i happen to know from sources that they didn't have any desire handsets until recently, so don't be too hard on them.
thought, probably just removing the link from a contact to facebook might prove the birthday thing....trying now
Yup, that seems to be it.
When a contact is linked to facebook, you'll see a facebook logo next to their birthday in the contact view (assuming they have put their birthday in)when you actually edit that contact, no birthday is actually saved in the contact.
So it seems that data synced from facebook takes precedence over the local data.
I'll give them bollocks on number 4 because nothing is being deleted at all, and the calendar data seems to be getting synched to google, it's just that the phone will display the facebook data and not the local data.
so that appears to be 4 bollocks out of 5.
And a MAJOR annoyance for me is people tthat have their phone numbers on facebook as just 44xxxxxxx rather than +44xxxxxx or 07xxxxxx meaning you cant send them a text as it fails without the initial + and you can't edit the number as its pulled from facebook.
I have had to unlink several contacts for this reason to get my correct 'local' data to be used insted.

lol Thanks for that. Firstly, glad you finally have you Desire! The SD card route will have to do for the contacts.
As for the facebook thing, well, I haven't signed in to any facebook account yet as experience has told me to get one set of contacts in working order, and back it up before trying to sync it with another account/system. And still, when I update a birthday on my phone, it won't sync to my Google account. It's not a major thing but it is a minor irritation.
I just did another test of inputting a new test contact into my phone with a birthday (01/02/70) and the contact was deleted on syncing with my Google account. Go figure.
Oh, and it wasn't all bolx! They were half right that you can't directly save a vCard to your Google account. At least give them a one testicle redemption!
ok just to get this straight. it deletes contacts if they have calendar info in them ?
so how do you add new contacts ? first without calendar info, then sync and then go to your google account and change calendar ?
thats just strange and bad
does this only occur for contacts with calendar info in them , or are there other places where this occurs ?

For me, yes. Try it, let me know what happens when you sync up a new contact with a birthday from your phone to your Google account. Or change the birthday of a contact already synced on your phone and let us know if it changes it in your Google account.
just tried it on mine, on a google contact that was not linked to a facebook account.
The phone shows the birthday no problem, but it does not seem to have synched that up to the google account, even after forcing the sync two or three times....
very odd.
I'm experiencing the same exact problem, new contacts simple get deleted.

Merge linked contacts permanently?

Hi I was wondering if anyone knows if you can merge together google contacts you've linked together using your desire. So the contacts would be merged in gmail and not just on my phone.
I've searched and haven't found anyone even raise the issue, so I was hoping someone knew if you could do this and if so how?
Thanks for any help.
No luck here either, it drives me crazy that I have contacts for people in 5 different places and I'm too lazy to manually merge them. The damn thing should just automerge and sync them all to google.
Thanks for your response,
I'd wrongly assumed there must be an option to sync the merges back to Google, as like you say that's what it should do, at least now I know to give up looking for the option, cheers.
And unfortunately I'm to lazy to do it manually too (took me long enough to do on the phone)
Once you sync contacts so long as you sync with Outlook/Google it should keep the links. Might take a while at first but once done it should be permanent
Yea I understand that, but I would have liked them to be merged if I looked at the contacts through Gmail on a computer, or if I updated to Froyo without Sense.
So rather than just keep the links, actually merge the contacts, for if I using something other than an HTC phone with Sense.

Exactly, I use multiple devices and I want all my contacts centralized and not duplicated.
Ahhh, got ya! So it'd have the info without linking to Facebook you mean?
Suppose you could just update the contact with all info you want on it and sync this with your devices...
Could try using Thunderbird as your pc email client (it has a duplicate contact add on) and something like Zindus to sync with gmail. This way you use your pc to sort your contacts and then sync to gmail, and then gmail to your phone. I've found this to work as long as you keep all of the contacts on Thunderbird under the default group (I created a group/email list and have spent the last two days working out why everyone in the group had disappeared from my phone:|)

Yea so for example, because some of my contacts are quite old, they were set up when you could only have one number with a contact so for some i have:
x mobile
x home
x work
so as HTC made it relatively easy I decided to merge these all into one contact.
Likewise for a lot of them I had email addresses stored on my gmail account, and HTC made it relatively easy to link these the email to a contact.
So I now have a set of nicely constructed contacts on my phone, but multiple entries for them in my google account, so would have liked an option to just make the links a permanent merge.
And yea I know I can do this manually, but it took long enough to do this on my phone in the first place, and as I've already said I'm too lazy to do it again. This thread wasn't meant to me moaning, just checking to see if there was a merger option or trick I was missing.
Edit: Thanks Iain I'll have a look at that when I have some spare time
Lol, I know it wasn't a moaning thread - don't think there is the option at the moment. TBH I bite the bullet and have a good prune session every now and then and get Outlook fully up to date and sync off that. I don't sync with Google
Damn, I loved the contact merging on my HTC Diamond, gmail was always up-to-date. Why the hell is HTC not doing the same on Android but just linking.... It looks good on the phone but is a mess in gmail...
If you have multiple Google contacts it's pretty easy to merge them online:
http://mail.google.com/mail/contacts/ui/ContactManager
(have to be logged into gmail to access it )
THX for that hint. But what I loved in TouchFlo was that my gmail conacts got automatically updated with info from Facebook, like the birthdays for example which then also showed up in the Google Calendar. Or when somebody changed mail adress or phonenumber, via TouchFlo these were automatically propagated to the Gogle Contacts.
Think this a FB issue, know they recently changed API access to prevent apps pulling down Birthdays automatically and saving of phone numbers has always been a no no for any apps.
Droid gets around this by preventing saving the number permanently or amending on the device.
Old thread I know, but I was looking to do this and solved it.
-Export your address book on the phone to vcard.
-Email yourself this file. (You may need astro to find it. I used k9 mail and astro)
-Save this file on your PC.
-Goto your google contacts list on your PC.
-Import a vcard. Direct it to this file.
-Google automagically merges the contacts for you.
The unfortunate part is that you still have to manually delete the contacts that were on your phone, but at least everything is in the cloud now. You could just blow away your contacts entirely and resync.

Old thread I know, but I was looking to do this and solved it.
-Export your address book on the phone to vcard.
-Email yourself this file. (You may need astro to find it. I used k9 mail and astro)

Thanks, I'll try this later. It's still a problem that's bugging me to death. I keep getting returned 5 or 6 of the same number for a contact. Hopefully this will help.

Bit of a necromance but ran into this issue with my Desire HD.
Thanks for the solution, can't believe there's not a better way....
I have all my contacts in Gmail. All their numbers and email addresses are in there.
So whenever I edit a contact, it's edited in Gmail. It's pretty much all 'in the cloud'.
I use Outlook categories to keep my contacts clean and manageable. For syncing I am currently using MyPhoneExplorer after coming to grief with HTC Sync.
I've done some research now.
I found the app in the market called: GO contacts
this app can export ALL your contacts, also the ones that your HTC or android found with syncing with facebook, hyves, twitter, whatsapp, linkedin etc.
exported and imported in my gmail, so I have all the contacts in my gmail.
If they now remove their phone number (from facebook in example)
I still have it

Yahoo mail app - Contact gone!

Hello,
Last night all my contacts vanished from my S2.
They are still there when I log into my ymail via PC.
I've tried re-syncing, un-installing, re-installing etc. I just can't get them back.
I don't want to enter them all manually if I can help it.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Welcome to the sh1tty Yahoo Mail for Android bud!
I too am a Yahoo emailer, have been since 2000, and up until yesterday i've been using it to sync my contacts. Mind you, it's always been a bit temperamental. If i updated one of my contacts online and then tried re-syncing, it would never update. NEVER! I always had to uninstall and then reinstall. How stupid is that?! As i undrstand it, Yahoo Mail for Android has always been a bit buggy in this regard, although i will say for the actual emailing side of things i really quite like it.
Well yesterday i tried uninstalling and reinstalling, as i wanted to update a particular contact, and just like yourself could i get my contacts back? Hell no! It frustrated the hell out of me, i tried everything, and in the end some 2 hours later i finally got if fixed (but you may not like the answer!).
I decided, fu<k it, Android is built by Google so let's use Google for my contacts. Even though i have never used G-Mail, i decided to put the hard work in and upload all my contacts to G-Mail. Luckily there's a shortcut to help with this, you can export your Yahoo contacts to a .csv file, and then import them into G-Mail. A lot of the numbers got garbled up in the process and needed to be manually fixed, but it gives you a head start anyway. Plus, in G-Mail you can assign your contact's photos, so now i won't have to manually put these in ever again
As soon as i was done, i tried syncing my Google account contacts and voila, they immediately showed up. And whats more, i even tried editing one straight away online, and one quick sync later it showed up immediately. Yay!
So now i have a G-Mail account (exact same ID & password as my Yahoo mail, so i won't forget! which i will use exclusively as a 'Contacts Management' solution, and my Yahoo Mail as per normal.
Trust me mate, take a couple of hours and do as i did, best move i've made since getting the phone. Yahoo need to seriously sort out the syncing on their android app!
