Hello all. i rooted my friend's mytouch slide yesterday, and now he wants it un-rooted. i have an idea on how to do it, but i am not entirely sure. I know that i have to apply a google update from the hboot error. I am experienced in hacking android phones, but since i am from the droid incredible community, i am kinda learning the rest. Can anyone supply me with a link for the software. Thanks in advance.

there is a stock image int these forums if you search for it. use that to nandroid restore from clockwork recovery
will that "unroot" the device then? for clarification I was also wondering this question and have seen this same answer before but once you install the nandroid back on then there is no longer signs of rooting, correct? or is it the case of; once it's rooted it is always rooted kinda thing and the closest you can get is to install stock rom back on? Thanks for clarifying...
stock rom nanroid = no root ever(or that's what they think) there is also another thread in dev forum that has an unroot img that you flash from bootloader(same build different method)
returning to the stock img is good enough to return the slide for warranty purposes. & make sure you delete the update.zip file from the SD card. There is no HSPL for the mytouch yet which is what they look for in other devices.
Thanks guys for the great explanation. Makes me feel better knowing its still good for warranty (just in case)!

I'm a noob at Android hacking and wanted to root my evo After a few questions to one of my friends, he pointed me towards unrevoked3. Now am stuckand don't now how to unlock the NAND and its driving me crazy. I want to be able to use roms such as damage control. Please help. Im compleatly lost.
I would ask your friend, don't think many here use unrevoked, we used the complete method from toast.
Also read through the posts in the Dev wiki.
I just rooted and unlocked last night...had a few issues. Should be around most of the evening. Where are you and what did you do?
Last night I used that unrEVOked3.1 software and then moved on to unlocking. You will need to ADB installed to do it the way I did it. This is a component of the Andoroid SDK. (You can find that from the google android site.) It is complicated and I got through it because I am old enough to have actually worked in DOS back when there were dinosaurs.
It's not impossible, there are instructions out there...but it will take effort. Hate to point you away from xda...'cause LOTs of good work here...but I followed the unlockr.com tutorial for unlocking nand.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-unlock-nand-on-the-htc-evo-4g/
There were a couple issues where su couldn't find the sdcard. I even did lists and saw it, but the commands failed at start. Took a mix of unplugging usb and replugging and mounting and just charging....not sure what fixed it...LOL. But I got the commands to run eventually.

You can use Rom Manager app to install CM7. In fact Rom Manager is included in CM7 Rom. Honestly I think Rom Manager was made mostly for CM Roms. Make sure you wipe data, cache and davlik before going to CM from another Rom. I never flash through Rom Manager app and always flash manually from recovery, but a lot of people do flash through Rom Manager. Good Luck.
Also just to clarify(someone correct me if I'm wrong),
I think if you used the unrevoked3 app from this thread Unrevoked to root your EVO that it also nand unlocks it too. The thread doesn't state it, but the app has been updated to work with the latest hboot, so it should work on all Evo's right now. I could be wrong, but I have used the latest Unrevoked to root all of the Evo's that I have rooted and have never had any problems with backups, restores and flashing Rom's.
and i got titanium back up for my apps but not sure how to use it i got idea of hot to use it and how can tell if my nand is unlocked or not

power off your phone then go into bootloader using power+vol. down..if you see s-off at the top the youre unlocked
If you are s-off, but still having problems with some root apps, you need to install busybox. You can do this from the "problems?" button in the bottom right of the overview screen in Titanium Backup. Then choose "get busybox".

The older method of Unrevoked was known to break 4G for some people. I don't know, because I've never used it, but I haven't heard any complaints from the people using the new Unrevoked.
To check if you phone is rooted properly, simply download the Superuser from the market and install it (you may already have it if it came on the rom you installed). If you do have, download shootme from the market and see if it allows you to take a screen shot of your phone. If it does, you're rooted.
What I don't understand, is why would you root the phone if you don't know what rooting does or what it can do for you.
I like the unrevoked root as it is easy to do and easy to remove.
The best part of rooting for me is installing custom roms and getting rid of the bloatware from sprint. Also by installing one of the new custom roms you will get the new leaked HTC OTA update (thanks to flipz) which makes the EVO a lot more usable because you actually get decent battery.
Wifi tether and quickboot are nice too.
Go try a new rom with some interesting additions like bakedsnack or vaelpack and you'll soon get the hang of it. First thing you need to do is install a custom recovery. You can use clockwork or amon ra, but I've had a few problems with clockwork so I would recommend amon ra. Either of these let you install custom roms and do nandroid backups.
thanks to both of yall i did properly root my phone a friend told me about it i looked it up and being the person i am i had to do it lol ill learn the more advanced stuff as i go could either one of yall tell me the best place to get roms and kernals i know i would like to enhance the performance of my phone and remove stock sprint apps

Best place to get roms and kernels would be under the development forums on this website.
They are specific to the phone (ie you likely cannot run a Desire rom on your EVO).
Always backup your nand with whatever recovery image your using before flashing new stuff, that way you can always get back to where you were if you screw something up.
Hello there,
I have been lurking these forums for a while now, I originally planned on getting an Evo around july but stuff happened and so ive been putting it off till now. I just ordered it off SERO so yay, super excited…but to the point. I read these forums everyday when the evo came out up until mid july when I knew I wasn’t getting one so I knew about that cdma trick to improve battery life and rooting via toast etc etc. However, skimming through the threads I see Froyo is officially out now and there are many types of ways to root out there. Also , there are tons of roms compared to a few months ago.
I understand there are many threads out there (ive read a lot + all the stickied threads) but I just want to get some outside input before I go to town on my phone when it arrives. I know these questions have probably been answered in some form or another on this forum and XDA but honestly, there is an overwhelmingly large amount of information and I just need answers to a few simple questions and I hope people understand that.
1. The first thing I want to do is root the phone and flash a custom rom before downloading apps and entering phone numbers and the such. Is this a good idea? Or should I enter my stuff and download my apps and use Titanium Backup (do people still even use that?) to save my crap before I root and flash?
2. The order of flashing a custom rom would be …root (unrevoked 3.2.1) > nandroid backup > flash custom rom. Is this Correct?
3. I also noticed that some of the custom roms require different versions of hboot (whatever that is) and older versions of software. I don’t want to deal with the downgrading stuff if possible, so my question is which rom can be flashed on the most up-to-date version of froyo? Any suggestions? (i notice a lot of people use Fresh)
4. Ive also noticed that some roms require you to update the radio/PRI or whatever. What exactly is the radio? I googled it and it has to deal with signals and stuff…does that mean the custom roms break the radio and I have to update to a custom radio for me to get reception/data?
Thanks for your time.
i got the Evo when it came out, when i got the evo in the mail i went to the sprint both on base and transfer my numbers from my tp2 to the evo..... then i rooted it " the old fasion" way.. i cant speak for unrevoke but i guess you can do that... and yes, you want to do a nandroid back up before you flash your 1st rom.. if things dont work you can use that to restore your phone... once you have at least one nandroid you dont have to do one every time you flash a custom rom... it doesnt hurt to have more than one back up tho.. keep some in your pc incase your sdcard get damaged or lost.
as far as apps and setting the phone... i dont think it matters.... the contacts get backed by gmail ( if you set that up, you should)... the apps you can use tittanium ( what i use, paid) but the onces you buy will be in your download section from the market place. havent lost one app yet but you have to allow goggle to sync with your phone... you can also use dropbox and other places.. a lot of options.
as far as radio goes.... you can upgrade everything one time.. some roms may include it but most wont... if its a stock rooted rom then it may include the radio since its something new. but you can find everything seperate..
flashing a rom wont change the radio endless it says it will.
anyways, hopes this helps and didnt comfuse you more lol
As soon as you get it charged up and activated .... root it. Don't do any updates, downloads, etc....
You are on the right track. You have done the smart thing, doing all of your homework.
As far as I am concerned Fresh is the only way to go on the rom
The radio and pri need to be updated for 2 main reasons 1. The fresh rom that you use whether it is the latest and greatest or an older version will be tweaked for a certain radio and pri version. You will find that on the site instructions. And 2. Updating the radio and pri will increase battery life and signal.
Ofcourse this is just my opinion and you will get many more I am sure........ get the latest/greatest FRESH you will love it

hello,
thanks for the quick replies.
regarding the radio issue, after reading the stickied thread in this forum "Common misconceptions and other useful information" im a little scared to mess with the radio. I notice that Fresh has a radio update posted so my question is this...Are all radio updates the same? like the one posted on fresh's website will work with most roms or just his particular rom? I also live in an area with 4g coverage and i plan to use it! so i definately dont want to lose that (its why im not considering using CM6)
sorry, im trying hard to understand how this works...this will be my first smartphone ive ever had so there is a learning curve for me. thanks again for your time.
The radio thing has me worried too, I don't want to lose 4G. I rooted mostly to get the bloat out and to gain 5 point multitouch. I'm still not positive what to do to NOT break my 4g and lose my radio ID.
I did the unrevoked root a little while ago, quick an easy. OP should do it right away.
I'm on current Fresh 3.3.0.1 with KingKlick CFS #10 custom kernel and all the updated radios. Everything working great for me. Definitely nandroid first before you flash any custom rom. And if you have apps + data that you want to save, use either Ti or MyBackup Pro to restore them. After you do a full data/factory + cache + dalvik cache wipe, flash the new rom then boot into it to make sure everything is running. Reboot back into recovery and flash the current radio update. By the way, I recommend Amon Ra recovery for all your flashing needs because it just works better than ClockworkMod imho.
Shameless plug: Check out Jabbawalkee's MattedBlues theme because it's just sexy like that but there are definitely other theme options out there besides the stock Sense look.
No not all radios are created equal. Usually the rom that you will be flashing will tell you what radio to use. The Fresh rom has always made strides to be efficient and up to date. I have yet to have any problems with any of the versions he has put out. Don't let the words radio, baseband, services, etc... worry you. flashing them are simple and and painless. No worries!

Unrevoked + forever is the hands down easiest and best way to root your phone except it leaves you with clockwork recovery which isn't as good as ra recovery but that is a very simple switch. Pretty dman simple on a pc just install drivers and click on root. Then copy forever to you SD card and flash it. Even easier on MAC no drivers required.
ok great thanks for all the input guys i really appreciate it!
Didn't see anyone answer your hboot question yet. Here's how that works. Hboot is the screen that let's you actually run recovery (either amon ra or clockwork), and the only Rom that requires a certain version of it (as far as I know) is cyanogen. This is important, because you can't restore a nand backup that you made on version 0.93 (which I think is the current one) when you're running version 0.76 (which is what you would have to change to in order to flash CM). So if you backup on 0.93, then change to 0.76 to load cm, you'll have to reinstall 0.93 in order to restore that backup. This is apparently pretty tough to do correctly, although I think its been simplified over the last few days. Note that once you go to 0.76 there isn't really any reason to change back to 0.93 unless there's a specific nand backup that you want to restore.

You got lots and lots of reading to do. There is no specific guide, you need to learn what ROMs are what.
Good luck building your phone from the ground up and then adding in Sense.
Why did you root if you didn't have a reason to do it? You were at 2.2 and HTC sense when you bought the phone.
First things first....
1) Have you made yourself familiar with recovery mode yet and what it can do?
2) Have you done a nandroid backup yet? This should of been the first thing to do after rooting.
If you have not done this and need help just post back so u can be directed to the right walkthrough.
If you have done this and want to use your phone with the latest software and root capabilities, then I would suggest downloading the latest HTC 3.30 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819838 It has not been officially released yet but seems to be very stable and contains some official fixes. I have flashed it myself and seems to be working fine. Make sure you do a full wipe and backup before flashing. This should put your phone to stock w/ root capabilities and let you build on the latest software from the ground up.
**By the way...if you are planning to use themes then download the "deOdexed" version, otherwise, get the "Odexed".
Hope this helps.
All I did was root my phone and downloaded Titanium Backup and got rid of some Sprint apps. That's about it... but no, I am not really familiar with recovery mode and nandroid back up. So, all the help I can get is always welcome. Thanks.
Also, when I do a complete wipe and reinstall the stock rom, the Sprint apps will also be included?
If it is the stock rom then unless whoever posted it took these out, then they should be on there. Can't remember for sure, but I believe the stock 3.30 will take you to exactly like stock except rooted and with new software version.
Couple things you should do first....
1) Read through this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790427
2) Search for how to do nandroid backup and get that done first. Without it, you have nothing to recover if something does not flash properly.
3) Read, read, read.....if there is something you don't understand search these forums or the internet. If you can't find the answer then post something.
**If you are rooted do not take the OTA updates. It could really screw things up. Check in these forums first because something will be posted about it.
Ok, so before I get flamed for not reading anything and just asking questions, I'd like to put this out there that I do know what I'm talking about in terms of rooting, ROMs, flashing, recoveries, etc., but I'm not HTC literate, just Moto. I personally have a Droid 3, but I'm helping a friend root his D Inc and get a ROM flashed.
Anyways, please pardon my Moto slang and fill me in with the right terms. Thanks in advance here!
I know the D Inc is easily rootable. Is there a 1 click or does z4root work? I can use ADB, but for simplicity's sake, I like to keep it automated.
As for the bootloader, he's just an average user and has been using it stock for probably over a year now. Must I unlock it to flash a ROM (I know I don't on my D3, but our ROMs don't have kernels, so...) I'm assuming I need to. How would I go about doing that?
Once rooted (and unlocked?), can I install a ClockWorkMod-esque program to flash ROMs, or do I just use the stock Android recovery? Again, Moto and the bootloaders...
On this topic, do I just use a program similar to a Moto Bootstrapper to create Nandroid backups of the system and whatnot partitions as a recovery?
Is there an SBF (Moto term, way to flash stock software) so that a brick can be unbricked? I'm fully comfortable with a brick, I've done it MANY times to my D3 while flashing any assortment of things (most recently while patching a Bell Canada 2.3.6 build to a 2.3.4 VZW D3).
Finally, what ROM do you guys suggest? I'd like to keep it Sense'd because I don't think that slapping AOSP or some other launcher on there would be the best way to segue him into a rooted phone. Battery life is probably the main concern here.
Well, if you've made it this far without scolding my laziness (and desire to not fully grasp, I have a Moto phone and will be going to a Samsung one sooner rather than later hopefully), thank you for you time and suggestions. I'm hoping to get this all downloaded and set up over the next few days.
Thanks!

There is a 1 click method (unrevoked) if the phone is on android 2.2 froyo, but if its on 2.3.4, there is a little more technical steps involved to rooting and getting s-off.
Yes to flash a rom you must be rooted and s-of with a custom recovery, either clockwork or amon ra.
We dont call them sbf's we call them ruu's. They are PB32IMG.zip files flashed thru hboot, or exe files ran from a pc. They will get you back to stock.
I would go with my rom Touch Of Blue, or jermaines stock+ rom. They are mostly stock with fixes and enhancements.

first off welcome.
ok so there is no 1 click root per say, you will have to do a little bit of work. first what build do you have? gb or froyo:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306400
that thread will have a lot of helpful information.
as for SBF for htc is an RUU.exe that will bring you back if a soft brick is done. very simple to use.
save this site. it has everything you will ever need for the incredible. system wise that is.
http://pvillecomp.com/
that should get you started.

Slight amendment, it's: PB31IMG.zip
Thanks for the quick answers. I should've mentioned that it is on 2.3.4. I'll do some reading now that I've got some leads and will be back here for at least the next few days!
