I've seen a couple of people post on this issue but not many is facing it so i'm wondering if it's cause by a certain software? Or is this just another bug in the 2.1 and hopefully it gets fixed in 2.2
I've got the sound manager app installed to activate the vibration again once it stops. Usually it's for my SMS but over the last 2 days, even when i draw the unlock pattern, it does not vibrate anymore until i re-activate it using sound manager.
I've read that it could be the battery being weak but my batt was at some 65% so i'm guessing that is not the reason.
Anyone knows what maybe causing this vibration to stop issue? Maybe it's an application causing it....my only guess is "Handcent".
I've had this issue for the last month.
I've tried a few different things and usually it comes back, one way or another.
A few days ago I discovered something that leads me to start thinking I have a hardware fault. My vibration disappears almost daily now but the last 3/4 times it's gone I've done nothing except give the phone a light tap (light as in two fingers on the back of the unit) and the vibrate function has immediately returned.
I'm just guessing but it kinda looks to my untrained eye that it's a hardware issue on my handset - it may just be mine though.
Ha....if that is the case then you probably have a faulty hardware. No tapping is going to make mine vibrate until i launch Sound Manager to reset the vibration setting
I'm gonna contact HTC and get it sent back in the next few days for sure. I think I'd prefer it to be a hardware problem (fixable) than a non-descript software issue that may or may not be fixed at some point in the future.
Well I hope there's a permanent fix soon for you
mine always has some problem with the vibrate too...
Anyone any news? The vibration of my Desire is not stable, you clearly hear changes in the speed/power. I contacted HTC and wait for their answer.
For your information, it does always work and I am using Android 2.2.
My vibration works without sound manager on 2.2. I have even had the phone turn off due to low battery and the vibration works once the phone is back on charge

HTC told me to hard reset the device. I can not believe that a hardware issue is solved by software reset ?

Generally it's the first thing they think of to try, regardless of the fact it means you lose all your data.
Mine hasn't changed/failed since getting the phone in April (on its day of release)

That's what I think too. I will hard reset the device after my holiday and will take care of a backup myself. If this doesn't fix the issue I'll send it to HTC...
Bad Vibrations
I've noticed a problem recently, that I get vibration when the phone rings with an incoming call, or when I switch to vibration profile, and the handset also gives 'haptic feedback' when typing etc, but no longer vibrates when I receive text messages or emails, despite soft resetting, de- and re-selecting all the relevant options.
Running 2.1 on T-Mobile, can't tell you what software I've got on it as I stood on it and cracked/trashed the screen earlier today - phone still running, receives calls, seems to be receiving emails, but can't read anything at all on the screen.
On a side note, does anyone know how to get data off a running Desire with an unreadable screen?! I can't get it to sync with the PC Sync software because I can't get it into sync mode from the touchscreen menu
Phone is set up to backup to memory card, so I am now wondering if I can use that card in a replacement handset to restore my data to new phone?
Sorry for hijacking the thread a little! Ed

I know this topic has be address many many times and there are still no soluation to the problem.
So.. I want to make a poll to see how many user is experiencing this problem.
I hope to grather enough data to see if it is a hardware problem or Firmware problem so that i can address to O2 regarding this issue.
I love my PDA/phone.. but... this issuse really bugs me cos i used the phone for business and it always happens when a important call arrived...
Pls, Lets Vote with your honest answer...
Derek
No problems here....
What i've experienced is that sometimes the ringing sound is very quite even though the volume is at maximum. I make a soft reset and everything's back to normal.
NO SOUND
I have also experienced the same. I normally have to do a soft reset to fix the problem. Seems its a firmware issue to me.
One more issue is that we need to disable the power off system setting after 3minutes.
If not, a phone call will be automatically ended after 3 minutes talking.
i have also experienced this problem. i had a important caller call me twice and i didnt hear my phone ring. it was also next to me. luckily, i had my backup phone with me when he tried that line.
agreed that we shouldnt have to soft reset to get back the ring tone functionality. i personally think its a caller id version problem, but thats my opinion cause its easier to fix. i just hope it isnt a firmware problem since i wont hold my breathe on O2 releasing a rom upgrade in my phone version.
im going to try some reg tweaks to see if it will help, once my main pc is up and running (currently moving). i just dont want to go back to an older rom because of a ringing problem. but it IS a big problem for most of us.
ps. sorry about the spelling mistakes and punctuations. im on my pda at a coffee shop.
Yup I have see the no sould on outgoing, no sound on incoming, reset does the trick for me. Also feel that the sound is low in general (even if set to max)
Ha.. i call XDA today in their headoffice in Singapore. The CS guy told me.. they know this issue and say there will be a new (Rom) or patch release very soon.
After seeing the vote result. I believe that the issue is do to software, not hardware.
I have a firend that design such product. he told me that it could be that DSP script is not written well. He said, the Echo Cancelling must be overflow causing the unit to manufunction. and after reset, the overflow will be clear out, so the unit function again.
I hope O2 is really releasing a new patch to fix this issue. If not, i think i am force to go back to my Sony Ericsson P910i or one PDA and one phone option.
i'm glad that O2 recognises the problem and not passing it on to other people. thanks for the information rcbear. glad you took the extra steps get them looking this way.
i hope "soon" means in a waek or two.
same problem
My ringer always works but sometimes, at least every other day. When someone calls me i can not hear them, they can sort of hear me, but the earpiece is dead. A soft reset fix's this problem. Is my issue related to the current issue dicussed in this thread? Thanks
Jeff
I have the problem
But I get it seldom and sporadically.

Hi Jeffro01..
Welcome to the club..
Derek
I don't seem to have the ring volume problem, but my phone will get into a state where it rings, I answer the phone, but there is no audio. In the six or so times it's happened, I haven't really determined if the caller can hear me. A reboot fixes it.
I can't pin down any one thing I do to cause it to get into this state, but it seems like a software/firmware issue.
I have this problem too.
I had to send my BT headset for repair for two weeks and noticed it did not happen during that time while it started again since I got my BT back.
When it happens (once to twice a week) I soft reset my SPVM2000 and it then is ok.
Also the BT Orange Switzerland patch makes the problem appear less often.
Phone ring problem got me twice today...
Both times, never heard three calls, but the phone still reports them as being missed.
Gotta be a solution for this or I'll be soft resetting every time I finish a call/use.

If so I have 2 questions for everyone who has this issue:
1, Do you use a bluetooth headset or any other bluetooth device (gps...)?
2, What is your current bluetooth version and build?
I have Bluetooth build 3900, and I'm using 1.33.
No probleme here
not using BT or WiFi.
Where can I find my BT version?
I don't also have the 3 minutes switch off pb, the PDA function switch off after 3 minutes but the phone remains operational. I often switch the PDA off myself whilst on the phone to save on batteries.
...Hi everyone! (1st post!)...
I get the dead-speaker in calls too...
I took delivery of my first SPV M2000 a couple of weeks ago; it had a few problems, one of which was that the speaker would be dead occassionally when making or answering calls requiring a soft-reset to resolve. I initially thought this might be caused by the device not correctly recognising external hardware had become disconnected - handsfree/BT/car-cradle etc. - but it did seem to be at random.
Orange replaced the device last week; and by day 3 without using any handsfree/cradles etc. and BT and WiFi not even enabled (much less paired/connected); the dead-speaker problem reappeared.
I'm not going to bother chasing Orange about this issue on its own (this device doesn't exhibit any of the other problems I had with my first); as it seems to be a pretty common problem that's going to require a software update to fix. Needless to say when I read that HTC have written a fix I will be on Orange's back to make a fix for their ROMs public. (dreaming?).
Just FYI, both the initial device I was supplied and the replacement have the same software versions (in my sig).
Regards,
Rob.
I circumvented (temporally fixed) the ringtone problem by setting the default ringtone to "None", and also set the phone to vibrate. Then Re-enabled MS Voice Command to announce all incoming calls. The only problem is, the voice isn't loud enough in noisy places, but it does the job in the office or semi noisy environment. I guess this will have to do until a verified fix comes along our way.
I have a problem that more people seem to have, according to the search. I couldn’t find the “audio” tab in my Bluetooth-settings, so that didn’t help me.
The problem is as follows. After 1 day the sound on my compact III mutes, including vibration. Sometimes it's after 12 hours, sometimes after 2 days, there's no distinct pattern to be recognized. Also, it doesn't seem to matter if you use the phone or not, since it sometimes is alright at night and the sound is muted the next morning. This is for all sound-events (warnings, incoming call notifications, messages, mp3 etc), however, you can make a call without any problems and hear what the other person is saying. Once you’ve hard-reset the device everything is back to normal.
It does get annoying however, since I regularly miss calls due to this bug.
I had the same problem on my Vario in the past. So I’m guessing it’s somewhere in the software I use, but apart from Total Commander and TomTom6 I haven’t installed any third-party apps.
Yup i've been having a slight problem with the sound. I thought it was like the endless knackered M500's that orange used to send me which had speaker failure after about 10minuites! (Swear they kept sending me the same 2 faulty phones - I had 5 in 5 days once!) But a play in the bluetooth seems to get it working again.
The other annoying thing is that if you leave the power management at the default settings then occasionally the screen blanks without being able to get the backlight on again - so now I have to manually turn of the screen. Stil aint much of a problem - ive had a normal days use, 2 hours of radio play, bluetooth and wi-fi on all day and still have 35% battery - wehay!
Hopefully there'll be a patch soon to sort out he glitches.
I forgot to mention I had the exact same problem on my mda Vario also. I always thought it was a problem with that specific piece, but apparantly not.
Could it be the vibrate.cab that I'm using to produce vibrations when you use the phonepad? Or should I really do some further research in the bluetooth-department?
Same problem here.
Phone becomes completely silent after 9 hours in standby mode.
I need to reset it to get back sound
Does someone know what is going on here ?
Please advise. Thank you.
I seem to experience no problems the past couple of days (fingers crossed). I used the 'speed up your WM5' tweak where you set the Glyphcache to 32768. After I reduced it to 16something the problems seem to have disappeared.
I noticed that this problem happens when for example email is automatically checked during night. If email comes in (and is not read immediately) the phone will start notifying in background.
Notifications are kept and only a program like "check notifications" will delete them manually. But still if you delete them, the phone then needs a reset
to work properly again.
This is not a memory issue, it has to do with the notifications.
I do not know how to solve it.
I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM + AUTO) depending on your requirements.
Also read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2 where the resolution was to get a new SIM.
Obviously this only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.
had this problem once: I switched on the camera, and then left the device on the table for a long time - so it went to standby.
I could not wake it up by the power button after 20 minutes, but as an incoming call came, it was ringing with a black display, and I could answer the call with my BT headset. screen was still pure black
finally I pushed the reset button and since then everything is fine - I still feel this was connected to the camera.

Yeah if it only happened the once then that was probably the case, if you have the problem on a regular basis and you know its nothing to do with the camera (becuase you never loaded it) then you have the problem I am describing.
I have exactly the same problem has Terta.
I'm 100% sur that it's the camera that make this bug I have tried all my weekend to reproduce the bug a lot of time and it was always the camera...
Hope someone can fix this bug cause now I can't take any photo without soft-reseting my phone. Very, very, very annoying...
I messed around with the sound app SRS WOW HD for a while to get it work on TP2, with this installed, mine did exactly the same thing.
Sometimes it happened straight away (first sleep), other times it happened a day or so later.
Uninstalled, it did not happen again.

Yes I guess there are many reasons for the Standby of Death, if you have ruled out all software causes such as the camera or installed apps then have a think about the SIM and/or the settings that impact the SIM.
Its the last thing most people will think about. It worked for me and got rid of a random SOD problem 2-3 times a week which coinceded with being in weak 3G areas (where the phone might switch bands automatically) although that never occured to me at the time.
You see I haven't installed other applications nor do I load up the camera and leave it running so I couldn't figure out what was causing it, it just happened randomly not connected with anything particular that I was doing.
i hope there is some kind of magical solution for this because i just got my Sprint TP2 today and I have this issue everytime my phone goes into standby. Pushing the power button wont bring it out but every once in a while opening the keyboard does. I have to continually reset my new phone just to use it
PS; beyond this annoyance, I love it!

For the past few days I have been restarting my phone thru the soft reset. I think this is a windows issue...it has happened to me even without having the camera app running, and yes I checked the task manager. Hopefully this will be fixed when windows mobile 6.5 comes out, since Im getting frustrated with this phone...I have the phone for about a month now....grrr Stand by of Death!!!

so its not just mine then? this is ridiculous
Right, i had got seriously fed up with the standby of death happending, so i decided to contact HTC Europe directly.
They went over the usual 'factory reset' and 'update' solutions before coming to the conclusion that either there is a loose connection/faulty screen or there is some confiliction between drivers of the pre-installed software.
Because all HTC phones have 2 years warrenty as standard they have asked me to send if off so they can invistigate the problem and send me a replacement.
So if anybody is in the same boat as me a suggest you contact HTC and arrange a fix/replace.
Hope this helps.

Add me to the list, seems to happen when I am charging my phone and it hits 100%
This phone reminds me of all my previous Sony Ericsson phones....very unstable OS' ... Makes me regret of getting this one and should've gotten an iPhone...but then again I'm pretty sure iPhone's have issues that apple fanboys aren't admitting. The reason that made me not get an iphone is because of ATT's ridiculous plan pricing...Its crazy!!!
if you are on sprints network, take out the sim card. This has fixed the issue for me. Used to get SOD a few times a day but opening the keyboard and then pressing the power button used to get me out of it. This was really annoying, and i read that it may be issues with the sim card. Took that out a week ago and havent had a SOD yet

Jabberoo I can verify that this was caused by the SRS WOW HD program on my touch pro 2 as well. AS SOON as I uninstalled this application, restarted, everything was fine again.
I don't know if this will help anybody but if your phone suffers from SOD and you have TMO put it in airplane mode and see if it still does it.
I did that and it never went into SOD so that lead me to believe that the radio was the culprit. before that I tried everything listed. I don't have the 3G Plan so the 3.45.25.14 (T-Mobile) radio is the only one that worked for me.
I have the same problem.. just have installed spb mobile shell with mskip ultimate. I try to unistall all
I have a question: if I choose the 3G only option (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) and the signal strength is low there will not be an automatic switch between 3G and 2G am I right? ...and i'm offline then

Confirming this....
I had this issue for a while now...I tried hard resets, ROM flashes etc. It all works fine and was stable until I flash Sps Wow HD (I just realized this). Yesterday I flashed the latest HTC released sense ROM and right now after installing all the softwares I had the SOD again. Fortunately I saw the 2 posts and thought I will give it a try...and guess what?
I uninstalled the Srs Wow HD and phone is back to normal...no issues till now...will report later if I see any.
I am going to tmobile to get the SIM changed anyways hoping that it will fix another issue I am having. Every day I have to turn the airplane mode ON and OFF at least twice to get my data connection back. Mostly after a call and sometimes in random the phone is unable to reconnect to the data, it gives me an error that the epc.tmobile didnt respond or something like that. If any of you know how to fix this issue...plz help
I have been Experiencing this so called "SOD". HTC touch pro 2 sprint. On the 6.5.5 Build 23569 i had MAJOR sod issues. Energyrom , mighty , titanium , you name it. Ive Task 29 and reflashed them all multiple times. Still SOD was there... But i may have found a temp cure for me atleast. This is what i did....
First , i used task29 , next i reflashed the stock 6.1 rom, check for SOD... still had it... i task 29 again. Installed titanium edition , without sense. SOD was cured, phone worked fine, tryed to install sense 2.1, failed, SOD was back. Soo...
Then i task29 again, then repeated task29 a second time at the boot screen.... then i flashed Energyrom GTX themed 21907 build june 27th......Once it was flashed unplugged my USB plug and plugged it into the usb wall plug i have . Installed LUMOS, light sensor still was inactive and no response, could not brighten and still nothing... Installed G-light right after lumos without uninstalling lumos.... Still plugged into the AC wall USB plug....let it sit. Still nothing, couldnt adjust or brighten..... So i task 29 AGAIN... then flashed 21907 build GTX themed again... once flashed, unplugged it & back into wall charger... Installed lumos.... SUDDENLY!!! the sensor worked, and was accepting light AGAIN! ...
So i ran the LUMOS wizard, followed instructions and my phone was SOD FREE!! Let it sit over night, was fine....I wanted to see now if i could overwrite / flash over GTX themed with DiNiK glass cause i liked it better... so i DID NOT USE task29 this time, just reflashed over GTX themed one With DiNiK glass... same build 21907 and followed all my same steps, with wall plug, installed lumos, did the wizard,.... WALAaa.... works still like a charm. Have been using and testing it for 5 days, SOD is gone as far as i know.... ALSO in options, under setting / system / power / batt... i turned off the option to charge it when plugged into PC....Not sure if it helps or not. But Something i did is doing the trick. Seems between the backlight, and something to do with my 2.0 usb cord thats messing it up.
Seems to be cured... Still not sure exactly what fixed my phone. But between all that, IMO i believe installing lumos and glight triggered something also i think not letting it charge thru the PC, and only using a wall plug for charging has something to do with it....Either way . now its back to normal working just great... ONLY running LUMOS cab, and all the games i want. Energyrom Build 21907 DiNiK Glass Themed june 27th.... HOPE this helps!!! Have a wonderful DAY!
i've tried searching this forum with no luck for results, so maybe someone can point me in the right direction...
just wondering if there is a fix for this issue, that apparently is a bug:
when receiving an incoming call, and while the phone ringer is turned on, it will ring for a split second then it will stop ringing. the call will still be coming through and i can answer it and talk just fine, it's just the ringer that is the problem. this happens randomly, and i've found numerous posts on other forums by searching google, but haven't been able to find anything here.
can't post a url so here's some quotes:
My Dinc sometimes stops ringing after half a second with incoming calls. I'd hear a very short ring and then it just stops ringing or vibrating. I just noticed this today after missing several calls with my phone today.
This problems comes on randomly and goes away in a similar fashion. This seems to happen only when the phone is lying screen down on a flat surface. I called HTC and they said it might be due to the sensor in the front and advised me to not put phone face down and always carry it in a pouch. This is not an acceptable solution. I carry my phone in my pocket and it can very well be face down in there.
Has anyone noticed this problem? If not, I invite you to reproduce this problem. Put your phone screen down on a perfectly flat surface and try to call your cell. I'm wondering whether my phone is defective or it's a much wider issue.
Thanks.
Update: Apparently there is a feature on HTC devices when if you're holding the phone and if it rings, it will mute if you put it on a surface face down. While this is fine, the problem with my device is that if I leave it on a flat surface, it will do that for all subsequent calls too (ring for half a second and then mute). Maybe my phone has a bug in implementation of this 'feature'?

is there any fix for this bug? and does anyone know if this bug is software or hardware related. currently, i'm running stock 2.2 rooted with city id deleted. thinking about flashing CM7 or another custom rom, and just curious if it will do this with those roms as well.
thanks for any help
Must be an issue with the stock rom. I've never had a problem. But I've also never ran the stock 2.2 rom. I ran stock 2.1 until root was achieved. Custom Rom's from there on out.
Sent from my ADR6300
Also on my HTC Wildfire
This happens also on my htc wildfire android v2.2.1 (latest official rom), i think it is caused by the mute-on-pickup feature that is bugged in some way, even if i have turned it off.
Update: Found the culprit! When the phone is on a 2G network, it happens always when there is any (voice or data) communication and glitches are stronger when the signal is weaker. It's probably caused by an interference and bad shielding of components. Similarly how 2G network makes buzzing sound in radio speakers, on A52s it makes a mess on the screen.
At least one user (bellow) solved it by RMA - sending the phone to service and getting back new/fixed one.
Update 2: Problem fixed. I sent the phone to service center with description how to replicate the issue (phone must be on 2G network, ideally low signal, data or voice transfer is happening). Got it back after 2 weeks. Report says they replaced the display and also battery for "construction" reason (as they described it) and issue seems to be solved!
To conclude: It is indeed hardware issue and is fixed by replacing the display. If this happens to you too, don't wait for software update or anything else, send it to a service for a fix covered by the warranty!
Since few weeks ago, maybe since last update a month ago (security update from 1st October 2021), I'm randomly getting graphical glitches on my A52s.
It usually happens when I wake my phone after few hours of screen off but today I also saw few flashes even when playing a (graphically not demanding) game.
There is colour noise flashing over parts of the screen. It is usually just few random quick couple of 1/100 sec flashes, sometimes it stays a second and it disappears and everything is okay after that.
I also saw noise not covering the screen but flashing instead of wallpaper... Like there's a corruption in graphical memory, driver or whatever.
It doesn't make a difference whether the phone is freshly rebooted or running a week or two.
Does anybody else have this issue?
Is my phone (the memory, screen cable or something else) dying or is ist just a bug in current system update? I don't experience any other instabilities or problems.
(I'd send my phone to RMA but since I didn't find any consistent way to replicate this, it would make just as much of a difference as locking my phone in a drawer for a month.)
I'm appending mock-up screen shots how some of the flashing glitches look.
Clear system cache, hard reboot.
Huh, I didn't really ask for help, but yeah, that's a good idea with clearing the cache.
I rebooted to recovery and wiped the cache partition.
(I also accidentally hard rebooted when trying different button combos to enter the recovery LOL, so I did both things. In the end I had to enter the recovery using "adb reboot recovery" command because none of the button combos I found worked for me.)
I'll report back in few days whether it solved the issue or not.

A possibility as is a mobo failure but no harm in trying a few simple fixes first.
Samsung has been having a lot of issues with their displays this year...
It doesn't really feel like screen itself is dying when glitches can appear under the home screen icons in wallpaper or in the application area with status and nav bars being untouched. But I guess it can be; I have no idea how the image on screen is being redrawn.
But it happens especially after phone display is off for longer period of time. The phone then is quite sluggish, presumably because the system paused or killed some apps and is waking them up. And glitches mainly appear then.
That would suggest to me either a system memory being corrupted or something weird happening in the cache, depending on where these apps go when they're paused/killed.

Factory reset. Before loading apps confirm if ok.
Then be careful what 3rd party apps you load.
If the reset doesn't work, reflash it to a known good version.
If all that fails it's likely hardware.
The most likely cause is a 3rd party app given right to overlap other apps and this 3rd party app has crashed. Uninstall apps in opposite order of installing until problem is solved. Or factory reset.
I have the same problem, sent phone for repair.
In my case, the issue is occurring when phone is on 2g network. You could try going to network and set it to 2g only, check if it's happening, and then set it to 3g and see.
Cheers!

So is it a hardware issue or software?

I have the same problem, and I can't replace the phone, the question is here, will this problem increase and affect the screen more?
Same problem here...but mostly when I am on 2G network (anyone please try and post results)...Thinking of sending phone to service...will see how it goes
Huh, I didn't get notifications for my thread, so I didn't know about all the replies!
I tested different things in last few weeks and I came to the same conclusion - that it only and always happens when my phone is on 2G network. If 2G signal is strong, it's occasional small glitchy line here and there. When the signal is really bad, it just messes up the whole screen - I had my phone ringing with screen being all just noise and mess. So I guess it's probably because of interference similarly how the 2G network connection makes buzzing sound in a radio speakers. Except here it makes a mess on the screen.
Now that I know how to reliably replicate the problem, I'll back the phone up and RMA it after christmas.
i have the same problem from the first day, it happens only in 2g signal ...and only if 2g signal is weak... i sent the phone to Samsung , they inform me that they know the problem and it will be fix ..on another update ...it s software problem they told....from this day i have take 3 updates and nothing happened....the phone still have the problem
Same here, took my a52s to a Samsung authorized repair center, after 3 repairs (the third one being the display change) it seems that the problem is solved. To me, it has nothing to do with software.
So, it's a hardware issue, I face the same problem for almost 2 months, and I don't know what to do
Only solution is to contact Samsung and have it fixed
