desire or xperia x10 or samsung galaxy S?

I`m a bit confused right now ... i really loved the HTC evo 4G but since i live in India ... i cant get my hands on that...
The only good phones i am left with are desire , xperia x10 or samsung galaxy
Pls let me know which one should i go for
And i wanted to know how are the games in desire .. are they even comparable to iphone games??... and can it be jailbreaked like the iphone????

Avoid the Xperia X10, mainly due to the terrible terrible battery life and the fact it's still running Android 1.6, as well has having much lower performance than the Desire and Nexus One which use almost identical internals.
As for 'jailbreaking', in Android circles the equivalent is known as 'rooting' to enable you to install all the awesome custom firmwares available on this forum to enable new features, speed up your device or even get the latest versions of Android before they're even released.
Games-wise, there is a decent selection, but truthfully the iPhone is the king of mobile gaming. I haven't found this to be a problem however, as I realised after owning an iPod Touch before my android phone that with most games I'll play them for a few minutes when I download them and then never really touch them again. I use music, video, email, social networking and general internet browsing far more.
As for Desire vs Galaxy S...kind of hard to choose.
Galaxy S Pros and Cons:
+ Large, amazing Super AMOLED screen
+ Most powerful Android device out, especially it's GPU (for 3D games)
+ DivX video support
+ Video-out if you want to connect it to a screen
+ Reportedly great sound quality for headphones
+ Battery life better than most other high-end Android phones
- The phone itself looks like a cheap iPhone ripoff (why Samsung why?!)
- Samsung use their 'TouchWiz' interface on top of Android which looks kind of ugly and adds little
- Samsung don't have a good track record with updates...they've confirmed Froyo but no word on whether it'll ever get anything above that
- Reportedly all custom roms will need to be based off Samsung's official roms, so won't have as large a variety as HTC phones
- Apparently many users have had GPS problems
HTC Desire Pros and Cons:
+ Huge variety of custom roms
+ Similarity with Nexus One means since Nexus One gets updates first, most can be quickly ported to Desire
+ HTC Sense interface on top of Android looks great and improves usability (especially the widgets)
+ HTC's default apps for mail, weather, etc are extremely well designed
+ Will most likely be able to run Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) ported from the Nexus One once it's released
+ Very good build quality and nicer-looking hardware
- Battery life not as good
- Smaller screen that's regular AMOLED rather than Samsung's new variety
- Not as powerful as Galaxy S

That would be because you're running Froyo, which the Galaxy S has been confirmed to be receiving later this year. =P
The more apt comparison is lower on that graph showing the 2.1 Desire and Nexus One far lower than the 2.1 Galaxy S.

well thanks for that .. i am leaning towards htc desire more now ... just to confirm are there any better andriod phones in the market which are gsm and available outside US ??

Which battery meter are you using?

vinayendra: since you mentioned only games in your post, my advice to you is to avoid android platform and go with Iphone if games are your priority...
If you still need to choose between these 3 phones, Galaxy would be your choice, cause it's better GPU will be advantage with games

I cant speak for the galaxy S but having used both desire and the xperia the desire wins hands down. The xperia is really laggy and the old version of android is a deal breaker. Once sony pull their fingers out and update the xperia it might be a different story but I dont think we will see that for a few more months yet
the only advantage the xperia has is the large internal apps storage, you dont need to root it if your wanting loads of apps unlike the desire

id love to know how to get that game running on my desire, I had it for my palm pre and loved it but the desire just gives me a black screen then it closes

Games or not my priority .. i already have a ipod touch ... for me the main things are cool apps maybe even GPS , email and very good user interface ... i have a htc 3G touch ... it really sucks ...after having that i had decided not to go for HTC again ... But i cant buy iphone 4 as it takes a year to come to my country ... and i heard andriod phones are awesome ... so going back to HTC
So anyone owns a desire .. plz tell the pros and cons of desire which u felt while using

If you have access to those phones in India go and try them out in person because you won't have a clue on what everyone is going on about except for prior experience on your old Touch.
An Android phone is perfect if you live your online life through Google, if you don't I suggest you move.
An iPhone is known for simplicity and just working until you somehow manage to get yourself into the zoom feature and you're screwed unless you know the zoom out function. These high end phones are true powerhouses in pocket computing and are for more than showing off to your mates that you have a cool phone. If that's all you're going to do, you deserve an iPhone. If you're rolling up your sleeves and learning how to individualise yourself from every other Android user out there then you will quickly learn about live wallpapers, widgets, shortcuts and button combinations. Go further than that and its roms, themes, radios, adb commands so on and so forth.
Know what you want and shop according to it. One of these phones will tick most if not all of your needs and wants. Or something in the near future will. Between the 2 phones, out of the box you are looking at a difference of interface more than anything else. Really suggest you go try them out.

I'd mostly agree with that.
Android phones really are 'enthusiast' phones, in the sense that you get out of them what you put in. For example, customising it to work exactly how you want and look how you want it to look.
The iPhone is made as a very controlled system, so you have only the absolute minimum freedom (ie: change your wallpaper or order of icons). This is ideal for many people who want something that just 'works' and has been tuned to be an intuitive experience for the majority of people.
Android is based around making your phone uniquely yours, such as through the use of the homescreens to fill with whatever you want (widgets, controls, shortcuts, folders, etc). What this means is it requires more time and attention than an iPhone, but the end result is a phone and way of working that is of your own design.
Think of it like Lego:
- the iPhone is where you follow the instructions and get what is shown in the picture on the box (which can annoy people who want to do their own thing).
- Android is where you are given a pile of lego bricks to build whatever you want, so it's far more personalised even if it's not as polished as the iPhone (which can confuse or put of people who prefer a guiding hand and it to be done for them)
I'm happy to sacrifice some polish in the interface for the chance to really make my phone mine, but there are many who feel the other way. That's why it's great we have the oppurtunity to choose between Android and iOS (and soon Windows Phone 7, which seems like a halfway point between the two).

i have a small doubt ( a n00b one) .. whats the use of "rooting" and installing ROM`s???.. is it the same as "jailbreaking" in iphone where i can install paid apps and games for free and play with my looks ?? ... or is there anyother use??

i have HTC Desire which i bough from a friend in England, (i live in Seattle) and absolutely love it. My co-worker has Tmobile Samsung Vibrant. Ill give my impressions and quick pros and cons, i may sound little bias but here it is.
Samsung Galaxy Pros
Large SuperAMOLED screen, true 800x480 res, multitouch (Which, while is brighter than the Desire, not that much better, almost cant tell the difference.)
Better battery life, Galaxy also comes with 1500 mAh battery whereas Desire come with 1400 mAh ( again only one day of test with moderate use)
Better GPU
16 Gb of internal storage (which is a huge plus)
720p @30 frames video capture (which also is possible on the Desire with a custom ROM)
Cons
Built quality is extremely cheap, back is shiny plastic which is prone to scratches
Has ugly iphone 3GS style bezel around the screen
No camera flash (this one is a huge let down by Samsung which is beyond any comprehension)
Ugly UI which is a blatant iOS rip off (this one may be strictly preferential depending if you like iOS look or not)
Samsungs proven lack of support track record
Not clear whether gonna have large dev support on XDA
External speaker is horrible, tiny sound (Desire is the same)
That is all i can think of at the moment
Desire Cons
Uses old Clear pad 2000 touch panel which lacks true multitouch support or supports it in a broken way (you can google Nexus one touch screen problems, there is 70 pages plus thread about it)
Uses Cheap Pentile pixel arrangement, which some argue is better for media but horrible if ou spend most of the time reading text on your device. ( you can google Pentile on Nexus One, Anandtech.com has very informative article about this)
Eternal speaker is horrible, sound is tiny and quite
video capture is crap
When using on low brightness, screen has pink hue
Battery life is mediocre
Pros
Built quality is way better than Galaxy, also looks sophisticated compared to Galaxy
Camera flash
Huge support from XDA developers since it is almost identical to Nexus One
Runs Sense, although i equally hate Sense, it is a lot better that TouchWiz
Has hardware buttons (this one is a deal breaker for me as Galaxy touch sensitive buttons are unresponsive at times and generally suck)
AMOLED is almost as good as Galaxy's ( aside from cheap ass touch panel that HTC used on Desire and Nexus One, why HTC why)
That is all i can think of at the moment. I am eligible for an upgrade with Tmobile, but i think ill keep the Desire. Just better phone aside from crappy screen. Hope this helps

Im thinking to buy a galaxy S, but i heard about cool thing for htc desire called OpenDesire. This thing makes desire really super phone. How do you think will something similar will be gor galaxy S ?

OpenDesire is a stock Android ROM, removing all the HTC Sense gubbins, and isn't something 'available' for the Galaxy S as it's written specifically for the Desire...

im really confused because i dont which phone to choose :/.

Definitely go Desire all the way.
I have heard people complaining the Sammy is slow in menus and GPS is super crap. Takes long to get a lock etc.

hello, I had both Galaxy S as well as the Desire I returned the Galaxy S after just 3 days of use as the battery life was just appalling! It was laggy, hated the UI (very slow compared to previous versions of TouchWiz) and also hated the "iPhone style" in the menu.. I hate iOS which is why I got Android! Also, the screen is very nice, but I really could not put it into my own pocket! Anyways whats the differance 0.3 inches eh?
Now that I('ve got the Desire, I just love it! Sense UI, fast, snappy, and NO lag! NEVER! Notofications bar, better than any notificatio0ns you get on any other phone, pull it down and sellect what you want! Love it! Camera is, well, equal, I dont use it that much to notice!
Music player, very good however in the Desire you dont get an equalizer! Once again, I love the phone!
It may seem that I am being biased, but thats the way I feel Just one more thing, when you type, you make mistakes, just like everyone, on the Galaxy S you have to use you fingers to get that little line to move where you want to correct, whereas on the Desired, you can use the Track Pad! Love this feature!
ohh and about the GPS.. well Galaxy S has accuracy of 5-30 meters (didn't get to test myself, thats what I've read), and on mine Dersire, 1-3 Meters! now you know which to pick!

But samsung galaxy S is getting 2.2froyo with a lot of fixes and also GPS fix. So i think they will fix lag . Also there's a lagfix for samsung.

You now you can try each of them. But you cant try GPs and other stuff. Its better to ask in forum, because people owns that phones and can say much more prons/cons than you find by trying them

I own both phones. In fact I had a Desire and got rid of it for an iPhone but recently upgraded my contract and got a Galaxy S.
It's a great phone with some nice features such as 720p mkv video playback, streaming is nice too and the Super AMOLED screen is MUCH nicer than the SLCD in the Desire now. Movies look gorgeous on this thing.
However I chose to use the Desire again because it's got a few extras which I missed such as flash, LED notifications, the amount of custom roms available currently including Cyanogenmod 6 (currently use) and also the lag on the Galaxy S was driving me nuts in the end! Even with custom roms and lag fixes applied it would still lag sometimes, especially when trying to answer phone calls. The battery in the Galaxy did seem to a last a bit longer than the desire but I'm sure that can be sorted by watching what apps I use / finding the perfect rom.
At the end of the day they are both great phones and I'm sure you would love whichever one you had. My Dad borrowed my phone today and was watching mks in his dinner hour at work and was so impressed!

Its so hard to make a decision. Desire with OPenDesire ROM is super phone. So fast and battery lives longer and much more. I very like Galaxy S, but he have a buggy OS

I had the problem after returning the Galaxy S, I had 2 choices, SE X10 or the Desire, was not disapointed

so the best choice now from androids is HTC Desire ?

If you are asking it on Desire forum, what else would you expect? I personally have desire and I'm very satisfied with it. Earlier I had Galaxy Spica which was ok also over the earlier non-android phone.

Given the Desire is nearly 6 months old now, I'd be inclined to wait a month or two if I were you as new models should launch shortly.

But i heard that samsung have a buggy OS. And have no costum ROMs and etc. There's a lot of good roms for Desire, including the OpenDesire which makes your phone super

Personally I would prefer the Desire over Galaxy S.
I've had a little look at the Galaxy S and I think the camera app is a bit superior over the HTCs built in stuff - and when it gets the FroYo update it will probably be even more so.
But everything else seems nicer, smoother in the Desire.
Also I don't like the iPhone-esque of the Galaxy S - didn't like the iPhone - felt it was restrictive and thus went to Android in the first place... it was either that or the win Phone 7 - and that seems more orientated towards Xbox...

i were almost buying Galaxy S, but then i heard about super thing called OpenDesire. And heard that samsung OS is buggy, laggy. And no costum ROMs

HTC Desire HD/Ace is out soon apparently and looks nice, as is the Desire Z (but that might be US only)

As I understand it, it will be released as the Desire Z in Europe, and the G2 in the US.
However, reports today suggest that the processor is underclocked to 800Mhz, which may mean it is being pitched as a lower end phone than the current Desire. Time will tell, as clock speed isn't everything!

Worth Buying?

First of all, Merry Christmas,
So I'm currently looking to buy a new phone. My current phone is a i900 Omnia which is great but I really like the HD2 and DHD. I probably won't buy a new phone for a year or two so would like something which will last.
Is there any people here that had/have a HD2 and upgraded to DHD? Was it worth it? The DHD is about $250 more then HD2 here and I'm wondering if I should get it or not. I like the tweak ability of the HD2 but have never used it so I don't know how it feels whereas I tried out DHD and was very impressed. Even if I did get the HD2 I would still use Android and WinMo for GPS, unless there's something as good as iGO8 on Andoid.
Also I read some people have issues recording in 720p, freezing while recording. Is there a workaround with this issue?
I had only a little play with Android so I'm new to all this root etc...

Currently, android on HD2 is not so good as DHD, and I'm sure it's not going to, so pick up your choice between winmo or android.
I myself moved from HD2 to DHD, for finger friendly UI and newly developed apps.
Another good thing is android is both dev and user friendly, no more registry tweaks or volidate cleaning! Apps gone as you want it to, also easy to get back from market.

It is not a bad phone but the battery life sux big time. You need to carry spare battery with you.

I take issue with that statement, battery life on my DHD is typically around 20+ hrs. I use my device constantly with no problem about losing power.

Is the touch screen much different from the HD2, as far as the sensitivity and such? When I tried the DHD I went into the messaging and tested out typing and it was just such a breeze, atm it's always a hustle without a stylus.
I'm not too worried about battery life, I won't be watching movies on the go, maybe just some gaming, web browsing and mp3 playing.
I just want a device that makes my life easier, I read that WinMo on HD2 needs ALOT of tweaks and registry changes to get running how it should be and while I am a computer whiz and love messing around with everything, I think now I just want something that works mint out of the box with great potential if I decide to try other stuff. Also apparently the SuperRAM Android builds on HD2 runs extremely well.
Are there any other good devices with 4.3" screen and 1Ghz CPU? I tried the Galaxy S but didn't like the build quality and typing seemed crap compared to DHD.

Did you say Stylus?? hahahaha.. havent heard that word in a while... plus the stylus doesnt usually work on a capcitive screen..
In respect of HD2.. rightly said.. you need to do a lot of twearks,, but once done you are good to go.. or you find a good custom ROM and you are all set... With Sashmi you can install all your tweaks and the apps automatically when you flash a new ROM.. PLUS to Root (read HSPL) a WinMo phone is just too easy and straightfwd...
While going thru the rooting for DHD, goodness... i got confused.. so many times

I just upgraded to dhd from hd2 last week. I had been running mdj's dhd roms for more than a month....so the upgrade was not revolutionary. It was not a necessary upgrade except that I was flashing new roms every other day....
The pros of dhd compared to hd2
Slightly better screen...colors and sharpness
Better screen sensitivity
Better battery
Maybe a bit faster and more stable??
Better cam & video
But external speaker is very soft.
if I had known...I prob would not upgrade. Now my son is running mdj gingerbread on the hd2...lots of potential...

Yes Stylus!! LOL, Omnia has a resistive touchscreen so a stylus makes things easier. Yeah I've been doing alot of reading for HD2 and now how to flash, and I agree that it's much less confusing then rooting the DHD. The initial shock of reading how to root was overwhelming haha!
I think my only best bet now is to go and try a HD2 in a shop, but I must wait till the 5th for shops to open. If I can save 200bux for near same experience then I'm all for it. I'm a student and don't have cash just lying around lol, I mean the DHD costs more then my car!! (Had my 180sx stolen from where I study and needed something which nobody would bother stealing...POS '91 Ford Festiva)

Not regret...just that it did not have the WOW factor....as the hd2 and mdj did a fantastic job.
But I do miss my garmin gps on hd2 winmo

Yes HD2 is good but its good for moding, Android on it sometimes gets stuck n then u have to put a new build on it

HTC did an OTA update that fixed all the issues

Wait for few more days get some more money

To my fellow student...
I know what it's like, the ability and situation to spend money on any device you wish...an upgrade is however, necessary. Your old phone seems quite old, judging by its manufacture date and stylus interactions. What you have to remember, as a student as well as a person, is what device will serve your needs more? Do you want a more multimedia-oriented phone or a business phone? What will consume less time and work out of the box? Right now, it is a very critical time for me. I have seven exams in January alone. If you are in a situation even a fraction of what i'm in....well you get the point. I previously owned the HD2 for the best of a year before "upgrading" to a Desire HD. I would say that Windows Mobile, although an extremely flexible OS that allows for many tweaks and customisations, is an extremely old and "outdated" OS...it requires a dedicated owner and a lot of time to get it the way YOU want it. Also, you will get into a habit of regularly flashing custom roms and trying out another Android build etc. I believe that it is a phone for people who wish to experiment and realise the potential of a device.
On the other hand, you have a Desire HD. I would see it as an entertainment class phone. It has the same size screen as my old HD2, but more vibrant colours. The speakers are low and softer in volume, although who ever uses phone speakers to listen to music? As students and on the train and in lessons, we use our phones to listen to OUR choice of music in privacy and as a form of time-passing and relaxation. The Desire HD is a valuable music player, as it reproduces sounds far better than my HD2, thanks to SRS and Dolby sound effect algorithms. It is quite adept at playing multimedia, and has 720p capture AND playback abilites. There is also an 8mp camera sensor, and nice applications.
Personally, I believe a Desire HD will be more suited to you. It is a newer model with more powerful/updated hardware. From what I assume, if you were to purchase a HD2, primarily you would use it for Android on a daily basis and GPS navigation within Windows? If that is so, i'd suggest going for a Desire HD. I have one, and it is flawless. Android on the HD2 will never be on the level of a Desire HD. It natively runs the OS, and the device is fully stable. Booting into Android on a HD2 and back and forth to Windows will take at least a minute either way. It's up to you in the end, but I advise you go for a Desire HD. Although it's more expensive, it's all the more appealing and filling. Thus you will have the latest device, best hardware, a smooth OS experiance and the ability to download programs from the Market at the swipe of a finger. As a side note, if you want another device recommendation, it would be a HD7. Rumours have it that it is selling for £414.00 on Amazon and less on Ebay! In the end, the choice falls to you. I hope i've clarified the situation for you
(And in case you are wondering, no I don't regret getting a Desire HD. The experiance, smoothness and perfection alone are enough to make me happy and show off my device)

I won't even look at WP7 until it matures more and see how it turns out, seems too limited too me and I don't think I will be happy with it.
I'm not a fanboy of either OS but I do feel WinMo is getting old and customizing is essential to get the most out of it. I haven't had too much interest in Android until recently when I was researching more about it and it has really grown on me.
I've been keen for a HD2 for months and months simply to try Android without completely moving to a full Android device but that was before I knew more about Android and it seems like it's a great OS. Definitely "future proof" where developers will spend time on it so new software will always be available, unlike WinMo.
Better hardware is a lot what I've been thinking about, so why not right, it would be time for once to own the best right NOW.
But anyway, I think I've been convinced and I'm gona break my own "rule" ($400 max for a phone, in the past anyway lol) and thank you all for your time to help me out, I look forward to owning a Desire HD
So first thing I should do with the phone is get S-OFF and flash Buzz 1.0.6 kernel and then update to latest version? Or get S-OFF, update and then change kernel?

I'd suggest S-off, then flashing Android Revolution HD (either latest one for android 2.2.1) or Android Revolution 1.9.3 for android 2.2...real difference is slightly faster IO speeds..but with latest rom you can't flash a custom kernel...yet! You can also try Leedroid, and try out kamma's kernel, although I have gps problems with this combination. Hope I helped!

HTC Desire. Still the best around?

With all the new versions of the Desire becoming available is the original Desire still the best?
I love my desire and I've had it for about 10 months or so. The wife's contract is due for renewal soon and she does seems to like my HTC desire.
It would be her first smart phone.
I'm very pleased with mine. I am currently running an older LeeDroid ROM (Soon to be upgraded with his latest to be released version).
Would the original Desire still cut the mustard for the next 18 months or so?

Desire has been around for around 1 Year and till today it is one of the top phones. I own a Desire myself and have to say it's a great phone till today.
There's quite alot of phones coming out but nothing amazing has come out yet.
Not many people like the new Desire S because it's not that different from the standard Desire.Just a tiny bit different in memory.
Desire HD is quite big and battery life is appaling.
Desire Z quite heavy.
All the new versions aren't that amazing that would make me jump to them instead of staying with my Original Desire.
I've heard good things about the samsung galaxy S 2 which is coming out in March.If you want to consider that.

True that - I was expecting dual-core HTCs early this year.
The way I see it, the Desire would probably get left behind by HTC in the following 3 or 4 months (right after we get the official Gingerbread in April) to make room for their newer (dual-core?) models. After that? Well, it's up to us to keep it "alive and kicking" with new ROMs and crazy experimental stuff.

I think for new people the Desire S is probably a good choice... enough internal memory and a good size.
I think this is the point of the S... to be something to bring new people in. I love the desire original and wouldn't upgrade to an S

I think it is one of the best phones around still around.
I like the Desire S, think it looks quite nice, but not enough internal differences to justify an upgrade just yet.
I don't really like the Desire HD. Much too large to use with just one hand. Desire Z is a bit heavy, but I guess it caters for the people who prefer a physical keyboard.
I've still got about 14 months left with my Desire, so nearly 18 months, and I'm more than sure it'll be just fine for that amount of time.

what phone does your wife have at the moment?
I assume not a Desire - Desire / Desire S would make sense unless she wanted a bigger screen (Desire HD)
for me - like Jigswa said - the DHD is too big personally...
Oh also - unless you want rooting and custom roms and stuff - a DS would make sense (over the Desire Original) if you can hold out for it...
The only reason I say it is because its likely to be around for longer than the Desire original from an official capacity...

She's currently got a Nokia 6700 I think. Nothing fancy. But with her love of Facebook and Angry Birds she want's to now get a smart phone. Oh and something she can use for mobile broadband i.e. tethering.
A colleague of mine has just got a Galaxy S and to me it seemed a bit lightweight and felt plasticy.
I'm, trying to get her a decent 18 month contract. I've seen a few good little deals.
She probably won't want exactly the same phone as me. So maybe a Desire S would be the better option.

Had 2 iPhones before finally taking the plunge into Android. Had my eye on the Desire for awhile and thank god I finally bought it. Running the Oxygen Gingerbread rom ATM.. easiest thing in the world to get running. Had it for about 8 months now too but I won't be upgrading atleast until dual-core htc's.

I know exactly where you are coming from with the Galaxy S feeling light and plasticy - the Desire feels more substantial - as long as you don't want a super light phone!
Also I felt the UI was clunky and too iPhone-esque
the DHD felt heavier than the Desire too.
Desire S will fix any issues with installing stuff to the phone too by having the same storage space as the DHD - it will have Gingerbread out the box, and a nice clean Sense UI win win all round.
Desire S seems a perfect phone for people who don't have Android already IMO!

Apart from weak GPU, weak multi-touch in games, and lack of native DIVX support, I think Desire is still a good phone if those are not important too you. The battery and the internal memory are not issues for me anymore with custom ROMS and HBOOT.

HTC Desire Is 5x better then S(boottime, apps launchtime..so many bugs) i realy like my Desire Using 8 months

It is simply amazing how many people claim this, someone would get under impression it is true...
Desire S has moar internal memory, moar ram, packs 2nd generation Qualcomm cpus which rectify the first gen shortcomings, and on top of that, has better battery. Although it is not in the upgrade path for the original Desire owners, it is an upgrade nevertheless and excellent choice for the new users. You are trashing a device with superb specifications b4 it even went retail.

I agree, a colleague of mine has it. My fist is of enough size to comfortably use the biggest mices, yet I can't reach the opposite end of the screen with my thumb
Battery is roughly equal to the original Desire, both devices out of the box.
The biggest issue in my opinion is that they stuffed equal resolution on 0.6" bigger screen. Greater dot pitch usually means lower quality, I haven't used it enough to be 100% sure though.

The original Desire still has a lot of processing grunt compared to newer phones. Nothing is really better than it so to speak, a few phones are better at some things and worse at other but generally it's pretty level and just comes down to prefferance on a few features.
It'll be a sad day when I do retire my Desire its served me well so far and has at least a year left in it.

Using my desire over 10 months now. I'm still satisfied with it's performance.
It 's my first htc phone.
I've had some doubts about build quality before, because that was told to me.
I can say that i'm suprised. Beeing always in my pocket without case or screen protection, it is still looking like new.
It is still fast en reliable.
If i would by a new phone, would be desire again or maybe thinking about desire S.

From a long line of old symbian nokias i finally decided to make a hole in my budget and to get a new phone. As i was keeping a close eye on Android and the HTC Desire for some time i got that phone.
It was a very good phone with it's stock froyo, and know it's an excellent phone with the Oxygen rom.
As some of the other members say, i do not see any good reason to upgrade maybe until dual-core HTC's come out.

The normal Desire is still up-to-date. But when the Desire S will be out there in the wild it will be the better one. Still that quite compact design, whithout the week points the original archives (internal mem, multitouch).
The cost-benefit analysis will show up that the older Desire will still be ok for a long time even bought new.

I bought my desire 3 months ago, and the only thing that annoys me is the 2-point touchscreen... Multi-touch is a must to a device like this but we can't have everything so apart from that is the best phone i've ever had ! Desire S is cool but in my opinion at the moment we're between a generation change so next stop is dual core, and desire s is single core. I will change my phone next year probably to a htc dual-core that will be announced this year.

I agree with everyone here. It has been an amazing phone. Its handled mass rom fllashhing and crazy overclocking and its handled it brilliantly. Had no problems with it at all. Rather have this than a Nexus, but I would like a DHD because the bigger screen.
I got a Galaxy Tab 4 months ago and since then my Desire has been neglected as it doesn't compete with the Tab. Recently got back into using it and I've realised why I fell in love with it.

I suggest you stick around with the HTC Desire till the end of the year or whenver Dual Core phones are released. The new models don't offer much of an advantage and I heard the HTC Desire HD has worst voice quality sound than the Desire....... The voice quality sound on the Desire is pretty terrible so I don't know how HTC managed to make it even worst with the Desire HD.

I am not one for changing my phone when something new comes out and unless something breaks it will have to last me 2 years. The worry I have is will the microusb connecter last that long. Supposedly is it designed for up to 10,000 cycles of insertion but my niece has some sort of nokia with this connecter and its a struggle after 14 months to get it to charge (I have had to give her my htc lead and charger as it is the only one that works).
I don't like capitative keys, I had the ipod that had them and it was god awful to use , too sensitive. So the desire s is a step back from my pov

I'm concerned... My DHD is a super smartphone, but after all it's just a device that is getting "old".
I can't really say what will my next phone be. Sensation? GalaxySII?
The Sensation has good specs(although I played for a whole day with one, and it didn't seemed so fast), but lacks the beauty of the DHD.
SGS2 definitely has power on his side, and a amazing screen. But again, it's plastic body is hideos and overall seems like a larger Iphone.
So please tell me... what should I be looking at? I don't dig Sony Ericsson crapphones, nor other semimanufacturers like Motorola, LG, Huaweii or God knows what.

I guess an important question is, what do you need it for? That should inform your decision. (For me, I've never really seen the point in a dual-core phone, as I've never played a game on a phone and never will.)

Sensation and SGII getting old too - the next generation was in many previews, so wait for the future updates with better sound and displays and so on... If you want an actual smartphone, you have to buy one every two month. Dual and Quad Core are in all minds. They give you the chance for recording FULL HD Videos, navigate faster than before, play games with actual upcoming graphicchips...you must know, what you prefer. At this time the DHD has more abilities than the new HTC devices, because their resolutions are not supported by all apps. Also there are more specific roms and themes.

What do I need it for? What do you need it for? I use it at it's full potential, with games, various aps, recording, browsing, teethering etc etc.

I use my Desire HD with Sense 3.5 (RCMix3D Bliss ROM) and it performs very well. Once the bluetooth problem has been fixed, Capychimp will have an awesome ROM for us all...

I know what you mean. I got my DHD when the dual core phones were coming out, on purpose; I knew it was going to be cheaper, and I knew I wasn't loosing out much. I rooted from the very start, then worried that I had made the wrong decision when the SGS2 and Sensation came out...looking at everything now though, it's pretty clear I haven't

ive been on my dhd 4 a yr now nd havent been fascinated by any of the recent phones.....although i still use stock roms.....i love the sense interface so sammy is definitely out of the question. all dual cores as i have been readng havent really been utilized yet...im eagerly anticipating sense 3.5 update....it would b a new experience smhow. other than that i guess the only phone i wish was there is an android htc portrait slider...u know smthng like the dell venue pro for WP. Anyone thnks were gettng smthng like that anytime from htc?

Stick with DHD...because it same man...if ur next phone is sensation/sgs2...it will be outdated to...maybe will be a quad core cpu maybe...the technology in growing fast...haha

You can see it in my signature.. i was often unable to wait, because i wanted to test all new systems...at least the WP7 UI, before i bought my DHD. I think, WP7 style is a modern way to operate with a smartphone, but today no abilities to have an individual style. Android UI is a new form of windows mobile, not really futuristic, but i can change all i want. On the DHD it´s nearly perfect at this time.
Maybe in one year i will use again a WP7 phone, because i like many of it´s features, especially the menus inside and the live tiles (with another style). But i hope, that google won´t sleep all the time and works also on new interfaces. The last updates remind me to the times, when windows mobile was updated. I miss the really impressive changes... see, what will come in the next years.

I would wait if i were you.... even the so called dual core are being updated. Word on the street is that dual core 1.2-1.5 GHz should be the standard before the end of the year....HTC have some nice lineup comming soon

I took your advises seriously. Me and my DHD are friends for almost a year now, so it has a few scratches and dents. So, in order to complete our "new" friendship, I send it back to HTC for a complete makeover(new housing and a internal cleaning ).
