Evo can't see microSD or usb after root - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, I tried rooting with the 3 click root, and after doing so my phone rebooted and it can no longer see my microSD even when it is inserted (i've tested 2 cards, both work in my microSD to USB reader on my desktop), additionally it can't connect to my computer via USB *or charge*!
What can I do?? I'm freaking out a little bit here, without USB or microSD I can't even use the HTC supplied unroot
I really, really appreciate the help very much.
update: additionally I can't enter recovery, when I try to go into it I just see a Triangle with an exclamation through it superimposed on a picture of a phone.

Check to see if you're in 'Charge Only' or 'Disk Drive', the phone doesn't recognize the sd card if it's being used as a disk drive. Probably the most likely reason off the top of my head. Otherwise there is a thread in General about sd cards not reading.

Happened to me too. This fixed it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243&page=1

edit: nevermind fixed
You guys are awesome thank you <b> SO </b> much for your life. I was sitting here feeling terrible and now my phone is saved.

mini usb and micro sd card slot problem...need help plz

First time poster here. I've owned my htc excalibur for a 1.5 years now running WM6 Kavana (got instructions off of youtube). for about 6 months now, my micro sd card slot hasn't been working. I tried using other micro sd cards and still nothing. My card works perfectly fine when I put it into my laptop too.
The second problem is that when I connect my excalibur to my computer, I don't get access to it like another drive so I can't get my pictures off of it or load on new music or docs. I have windows vista on my computer (unfortunately).
Thanks for any and all help!!
Wow this is weird. I have none of the problems you face.. I don't get how the Micro SD card isn't working. I actually bought a new 2GB card on thursday, and it works just fine. Don't know if this helps, but I'm running the Rose rom, and I'm also using Windows 7 beta. Do you think your problem is related to your computer's/phone's settings? I think you have to enable Advanced network functionality. Again, I have no issues..
i used to get both of those screen's too but for some reason now it wont recognize the phone is attached. i can still charge it by attaching it to my computer but no drive recognition. can you explain the advanced network functionality please?

On your phone, head off to Start>Settings>Connections>USB to PC>Check enable advanced network functionality. If that doesn't work, I don't know what will.

[Q] Galaxy 10.1 USB connection kit problem, USB sticks

I've got an GT-P7500, and it will not read any USB Sticks.
Using the Samsung connection kit.
tried with 15 different USB sticks, all FAT32 formatted, all sizes 1-16gb.
A friend uses a 4gb stick in a GT-P7510, i tested that one, didn't work
Other things like usb mouse works, but not usb stick.
Anyone got any suggestions ?
Wonder if there is something wrong with it.
How do you know it isn't working? What directory are you looking at? What does the notification bar show? Which connector are you using? Is USB debugging on?
Also this is more a Q/A...
I'm hoping this thread is still alive because I am having the same problem. @ajnindlo I'm using the standard Samsung USB Connector with a 8gb usb stick. I've tried with USB Debugging on & off and I get the same message. "Damaged USB" and asked me to reformat.
I am using a Mac BUT I did format the stick as a ms-dos fat format.
Please help...
Thank you
PS. I know this is more of a q&a place, didn't know where else to post and didn't find any other with this problem but here. Please redirect to correct location if you know of a solution. Thank you
Just i hace received my USB kit and it works perfectly, my USB has 16 g and i haven't do anything to work, conected and work.

I had a 32 GB sd card and it also wouldn't be detected by my Galaxy Tab. But, I plugged it into my phone, plugged my phone into the computer, formatted the sd card and when I put in my Gtab, it worked.
I got my connection kit today but its not working at all.
Got 2 adaptors 1 for sd card and 1 for usb connection they both dont work.
Got no status bar message or anything.
Do I miss something here?

one catch that I have realized is that for proper identification of the USB Stick, the tablet must be in english language.
My friend had a hard time figuring out why his tablet won't show up any notification when a USB Stick was connected, whereas mine shows the "My Files" app showing the storage folder and all the contents of the stick, joking around I told him that was because my tablet was in english and his tablet was not.
Anyway, Astro file explorer doesn't work with USB Sticks, Use ES File Explorer instead and look in /mnt/ folder for usbdrive , there should be your content.
Nope still not working. No files found.
Feels like my device doesnt support usb host.
Is that possible?

Connect the usb stick, open ES File explorer and go to /mnt/usbdrive folder, if you can't find the folder (which is not on the sdcard) you need to configure ES File explorer to get out of the sdcard directory, the usbdrive folder is always present even if you don't have any usb drive connected
I had similiar problems with my 16GB P7510. It would only recognize any of my Sandisk sticks and a brand new PNY only at 30% of the time. The only stick it was reliable with was an ancient 256MB stick I had. I worked fine with my camera.
I ended up returning it for a 32GB P7510 and have not had any problems with any of the sticks. At the time I didn't think the tablet was defective but it appears it was.

I have exact the same issue, but it's strange, some SD has this issue, some don't.
"Damaged USB"
I found a trick, but it solved my problem only once: format SD card by a digital camera (Canon powershot) , SD was now recognized by Tab10.1
Putting some extra files on it by PC ... insert SD to Tab10.1 ... same issue again :crying:
Have tried several SD formats & sizes ... notting helps
Did someone knows a solution to solve this problem

Correct ... but after a second or third time connecting same SD , issue returns
Have tried this, waiting for a while does helps time to time ... so I guess it's maybe "memory" or "kernel" (system) related.
It seems we have the same TASK14 ROM + Pershoot's kernel.
Strange things.
I made the test by unroot my device and went back to factory stock ... it look like the issue is solved for 90% ... it appears when you disconnect and reconnect to fast after the 1st disconnection .
usb not recognised
Nothing happens when i plug (several) usb sticks. /mnt/usbdrive is empty.
Any idea?
charging Problem
You must Check that Your usb Debugging is On or Not as it creates problems and this will be stopping You device from Accepting Usb Sticks..
I found that FAT 'sdCard's would mount , but that NONE of my NTFS sticks would mount
All my sticks are NTFS , so that was unacceptable.
rooted 7500 and 6800
Installed 'Paragon NTFS&FHS', from the AndroidMarket and all files now popup in 'MyFiles' when I insert the usb with the adaptor
I have the Samsung Connection Kit containing as USB and a SD adapter. The USB adapter works fine, but the SD adapter doesn't work at all. All it does is starting the TuneIn Radio app when it is connected. I uninstalled the app and now connecting the adapter has no effect at all. Any suggestions?

[Q] USB connection issues DHD

Hi,
Been trying to find an answer to this for a while but so far no joy. I've found a few similar threads but none with likely answers/fixes.
Anyway here goes;
I decided to finally root my DHD now that it's out of warranty. I downloaded AAHK, read the effen manual and plugged my phone in ready to go... and nothing happened.
My phone charges via USB but I get no icons in the notification bar, nothing to ask what I'd like to do (mount as disk drive, charge only etc) and nothing pops up on my PC to say its detected a phone attached.
I've checked settings and it's set to mount as disk drive by default and also set to ask me what I want to do.
I've tried manually altering from mount as disk drive to charge only and back again. I've tried it with USB Debugging on and off. I've rebooted the phone. I've powered down, performed a battery pull, powered up again and tried it - still nothing.
I've tested the SD card in a card reader and it seems fine. I've tried a different USB cable, different USB ports and even a different PC! Still the same story - charges okay but nothing else.
Meanwhile my g/f's phone (a Wildfire) mounts fine with the same cable on the same PC - so clearly the problem lies with my phone specifically and not the cable, SD card or PC.
My phone is a sim-free DHD just over a year old. It's all stock atm - Android 2.3.5, Sense 3.0, Software Number 3.12.405.1
Do I (as I fear) have a bricked USB port? Does anyone else have this problem?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
The port itself could have something stuck on one of the contacts, or is dirty and keeping plug from fully seating. Other than that your port could be bad. To bad you are out of warranty.

Yeah I was afraid of that. I was hoping - vainly - that it may have been a software fault.
Still, at least I can still charge it... for now!
Thanks for the reply.

UMS, MTP and car usb inputs...

I'm really missing UMS, my car stereo usb input just cant scan all the music on my 64g card using MTP from the phone.
Just sits for ages. It worked flawlessly on my old phone, but it was using UMS.
But UMS isn't support anymore by google, thus the option was removed.
* Guess I can use real usb sticks and not use my sg4 as a usb drive.
But still trying to backup the memory card in the phone with windows, crashes explorer, MTP doesn't like the amount of files.
* Guess I can take the memory card out and put it in an adapter and put it in the slot in the PC...
I hate MTP, and I hate that the general consensus thinks its better than UMS.
I think cyanogenmod has UMS, maybe thats the answer...
sigh, one of those, its broken by design, and you suck for trying to use it, go away, we know better moments. I need a drink...

[Q] Sd Card and File Managers

Hello. Just got my Ouya yesterday. Having a bit of a hard time getting roms to work in my emulators.
I have a couple of questions regarding this..
1, Is an attached usb stick regarded as an sd card in the settings menu?
2. Are there any file managers available for the Ouya at this time. Preferably ES File explorer for its network capabilities, or something comparable
I'm also on a mac, and can't get the Ouya to recognize even fat formatted usb sticks.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

1. Sadly, no. This is a point of annoyance for me, actually, since it means you cannot install apps/games to the USB drive as you could
with an SD card.
2. As for file managers, the OUYA does not have any built in but you can go to the "Make" menu and open the web browser. From there you can web search for an ES File Explorer APK (or create a backup on your phone and send it to dropbox, then access it from your browser).
a. I personally used my browser to install Box and Dropbox so that I can backup apps from my phone and send them to my browser.
It makes the side-loading process easier. I now have Amazon app store, emulators like N64oid and XBMC on my OUYA.
As for being on a Mac, I am not sure how formatting works on that.
UPDATE (just now haha): I will be trying this to see if it can be used to move apps to a USB stick. That would be brilliant! Will update with results.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410262
Cheers!
I've create a single fat32 partition with the default settings in linux/KDE on my drive. When I connect the drive to ouya using USB, it gets mounted at /mnt/usbdrive. I can see in the logcat output vold handling all the mounting the same as it would for an SD card. There are no other signs though, that anything is being mounted. There is no environmental variables like EXTERNAL_STORAGE pointing to this location. It does not appear in the settings->storage menu like it does on other devices. You kind of just have to know where it is and then you can browse to that location in your apps.
I'm in the same boat. I'm sitting here trying to get my 500gb 2.5" portable laptop HDD to load with my roms. At first I thought it was because of NFTS. So I formatted. Nothing. Then I wiped all the partitions into 1 huge exFat partition. Nothing. Plugged in my 32gb USB Stick that is NTFS. Nothing. Grabbed a MicroSD-USB adapter and used my 16gb from my MK808. Nothing. Grabbed my old 16gb and reformatted it as FAT32. Nothing.
Nothing is reading on my Ouya. Wtf?
None of my apps are reading anything.
It cant be exfat; it cant be NTFS. You need to make it fat32. There's something in windoze where it refuses to create a fat32 partition over a certain size, but you can do it on just about any other computer. You can make your whole 500GB hard drive fat32 and ouya will see it fine. Or you can wait until we have more development to enable ntfs support. Don't hold your breath for exfat, since M$ is charging big licensing fees for it.
No I think my USB port is shot.
I've formatted several USB thumb drives to FAT32 and it still refuses to see any of them. Really sucks because the sole reason I bought the OUYA was to load all my roms on it. The bad thing is that they are so backordered that I'll just have to deal with it for a while.

How are you trying to test if they work? Because MOST people's problem is that it doesn't show up on the OUYA itself, it's all app specific and there is no directions built in to find USB storage at this time.
Grab a USB Keyboard or Mouse and try that to see if it works, at least that way you can rule out a bad USB port.
I've tried multiple different USB devices all with 0 problems and it seems like the people who go through 3 or 4+ different ones just don't know where to look.
I'm NOT saying this is your problem exactly or that you're dumb in anyway, you may have a bad unit, just trying to help with what I've observed while helping others on this forum.
And to address the FAT32 vs NTFS: Plenty of people have confirmed that NTFS works, including myself. It was rumored at the beginning that only FAT32 worked, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Good shot on a USB mouse or keyboard. I don't have anything wired but i have some RF wireless that should work. I've tried everything else. All of the emulator apps see sdcard1 and sdcard0. One shows internal storage and the other shows nothing. Won't even show folders. It shows this regardless if its plugged in or not.
The light on my USB lights up and so does my HDD. So the power is there but no communication. I'll have to look at it closer tomorrow.
I got it from gamestop and it was opened. Looked used actually. The tie wraps on the cables were gone, the internal box was bent, there was some kind of fiber/hair in the box, and fingerprints all over it, and the batteries were in the controller. I got 10% off and a free 1yr warranty. So they'll just have to give me a new one later. Its the only one available within 100 miles. Best buys out too.
I'm an IT admin so even if it "kinda" works, it shouldn't be this flaky. 4 storage devices and all not working. Someone probably blew out the USB and returned it, and GameStop tried to sell it as new.
Edit
I do have my PS3 with its wired miniUSB. I'll try that tomorrow.

Good luck! At least you can always take it back to gamestop once they ahve another one to get it, but I hope it doesn't come down to it for you!
Holy crap my PS3 is working?!
Now I'm totally confused.

Got it working. I ended up having to do a Factory Reset. Here is the quote I posted from the Ouya Forums:

Well I just fixed it!!!
I just got my OUYA yesterday and immediately threw on my 640gb HDD but it wouldn't see it. I kept screwing with it and screwing with it. Nothing. 32gb Flash drive. Nothing. 16gb Flash Drive. Nothing. 16gb microSD-USB. Nothing. I screwed with Fat32, NTFS. Nothing worked! I thought my USB was blown. Someone suggested trying a USB device so I used my PS3 controller. BOOM. Worked. USB Storage... Nothing.
I'm an IT Admin with a N7 and a Galaxy Nexus. I know my way around.
Well in this thread, I saw someone did a Factory Reset and that worked. WTH right? So I did a factory reset and low and behold, my HDD is reading like a champ.
So if you have USB HDD issues, use the Formatter Tool to format it to FAT32: http://ouyaforum.com/showthread.php?...ll=1#post35834
If that doesn't work. Factory Reset and set it back up!

Glad you go it working! Makes me wonder what the problem was in the first place, since it worked for HID but not storage. Maybe bad install or update of drivers.
I dunno. First thing it did when I turned it on was an update. I've spent all day screwing with it and dredging through forums. There are tons of people who have had issues after the last update, where it WAS working and magically stopped. So I'm thinking it was a firmware issues, perhaps something they changed. Since mine was probably used, perhaps it had drivers in there and got screwed up after the update. Who knows.
I do plan on swapping this out with a new one as soon as Gamestop has them in stock, since he was so kind to give me a 1 yr warranty. The USB port isn't tight and the connections feels sloppy. At first I was thinking that it wasn't making a good connection. For all I know, someone had an early edition and swapped it out with a new release day model. Like you said, something makes me wonder. I don't want anything else to happen down the road because of mal-use of a previous owner.
