File transfer question - myTouch 3G Slide Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What folder should I use for movies, what type of file is playable and what app should I use to play them? Thanks in advance, this is a great site.

this kind of question would be better suited in the apps sub-forum, but i have heard good things about lukluk, not sure which types it plays and you will need to find the app to find out. but you should be able to put files in any folder you want like movies maybe on your sd card

Try DVDFab
dvdfab is for copying my dvds what i want to do is convert film files i have on my pc into smaller files such as divx or mpeg 4 to play via core player
is there a universal tool to do this
edit found the mobile convertor in it but very limited no options to change res or audio and doesnt seem to work i click next and nothing as though it doesnt see the file types
i was playing with mediacoder last night, seemed to do the job for me. lots of settings as with any codec conversion process and u'll need to experiment to find the best codec/bitrate/resolution combination for you and ur media.
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/
just got core player
with WMP it plays my mpeg 4 conversion of monster inc no probs
with core player its very stuttery
file details are
Mpeg4
video avc aka h264
codec coreavc
video size
800 x 448
frame rate 25.00
i suppose what im looking for is to be able to convert the file to a format and res that core play will play smoothly
thanks for any advice

cant get this to run
keep getting msvcr71.dll was not found
download the eg fixer to cure it and says it cant be run on a 64 bit system
any help would be great
thanks
Didn't have a problem with it myself with vista x64.
I already had the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime library installed and just used the 32bit version of mediacoder and didn't bother with the 64bit addons. Not having experianced the problem you have, I'm not really in a position to offer much more help than that. Sorry
If you keep having trouble with mediacoder, you could try SUPER. I used to use it, but found its UI a bit of a mess.
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
I use Visualhub on OSX. It will specifically do H.264 MP4 videos made for iPhone and iPod Touch but you can also specifically set the resolution and the bitrate so you can specifically set for the TP2 screen. I get faster and higher quality video at the iPhone resolution especially since high bitrates choke on the TP2. Couple that with Coreplayer and it's a done deal.

Have you picked your source at the top of the screen?
but DVDFab is a shareware so here's a freeware for you
http://www.winnydows.com/page.php?2
more tools through google
With core player go menu/tools/preferences/select page/video
And put video out onto qtv display. Put video quality on high. Smooth zoom on.
Then try your mp4.
I find it best to convert videos to 320 x 194 or 320 x 176
The best video quality I have downloaded. (Trailers) .m4v but I can’t find any program that converts to that format
I've used Total Video Converter which has plenty of options and seems to work fine for me.

Visual hub (http://www.techspansion.com/) has been discontinued (sadly enough), but I use it as well. If you can get a copy somewhere, its really useful and piss easy to use. As an alternative i can also recommend Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/). Its not as easy to use as Visual Hub, but it also produces great results which work very well with Core Player.

[Q] How to get movies to play???Z

Have the digital copy of Iron Man 2 and Star Trek.
IM2 in WMV will not play
ST in Itunes will not play.
How am I supposed to play videos again?

You can use Rock Player or YXPlayer. Both Players will play .wmv files...

Hmmm Rock player failed on playback. Hmm will play with it some more
Rockplayer tries to play the WMV but the picture is all garbled and no sound. Rockplayer sees the .m4v file but says it is not activated.
MixZing works fine with WMV, IIRC.

Wow never had an issue with rock player... Used it to play mostly .avi though. Played a few .wmv files but most of my movies and video files are .avi or .mkv. Try using yxplayer, I personal prefer rock player but if it's not working then give yxplayer a shot.

Same here - doesn't play digital copy
I also tried to play my digital copy of IM2 on my HTC desire using rockplayer and get garbled picture with no sound.
Looked and yxplayer's feedback on the market and looks to be the same (or worse). Some comment that it may be a drm issue...
If anyone knows a workaround for this, that would be great!
Use handbrake and convert your videos to a format people actually use.

+2 Handbrake, here's a guide

Edit: Handbreak guide link seems to be down. Might just be a problem with their site.
I use tunebite. Converts to.mp4. Just make sure the file size is less than 2 gb because it wont play.

The ugly truth is any digital copy has drm and won't play natively on android no matter what those market players claim.
Handbrake can't do **** to convert drm dc's.
The only way to get your dc's onto android is to use tunebite and do a real time screen capture. I have done this 4 times now and all have been successful. If you capture it right, the final size will be smaller than the dc (mine usually trim around .8 gb's on average from the dc) and still have the same quality (tunebite finals my files at 95 - 97% quality).
A word of caution though, do not screen capture the itunes dc as it makes it harder for you to capture in 720p (if the dc is natively 720).
Good luck.

Playing Digital copy movies on the HTC EVO

Anyway to load and play digital copies onto our android phones? I have the htc evo 4g.
Yea....copy the movie(s) on to the sdcard and then use rockplayer to play them. Keep in mind not all file types will play, most will. Also HD movies might stutter.
You can try RockPlayer, VPlayer, and mVideoPlayer to play the movies once their own your SD. mVideoPlayer has a lot of polish to it.
Copy them to your SD card as m4v or mp4, not as wmv. Should play okay.
Thanks guys, well try when i get home.

Because the EVO won't play wmv without adding a program to do so. You added a program that does, which is fine, but that was not the question the OP asked.

Umm b ut it wont play .AVI or many other formats either.. But you (and others) always specifically mention "Not WMV files"
why? they play just as fine as any other format and as it seems everything but what you actually record needs a program..
Basically, why are people always saying not to do WMV but everything else is fine?

Because the codecs natively used in the wmv containers are not supported natively in the evo.
To the op, none of the market players will play digital copies no matter what they say. I have about six movies on my evo and all were digital copies. I had to screen capture them because android in general will not currently play drm content and dc's have drm. Understand that the market players can only play content with no type of protection on them such as drm. At this time, there is no way to watch pure digital copies.
Depending on what studio the DVD with the digital copy came from, the files themselves are either going to be protected mp4's or protected wmv's. Neither of which will play on an Android device. If the file is an mp4, it *might* play if you strip the protection off, but I have no clue as to how easy or possible that is. A wmv won't play whether it is protected or not as far as I know.

Copy over as iTunes
As mentioned earlier, if it has playback protection like Disney puts on their digital copy, it won't play.

Check http://www.doom9.org/ for help in ripping your DVD's. Much easier than dealing with DRM'd studio copies.
Just google search Step by Step Guide on How to Play AVI on HTC Desire/Evo/Hero?
you will find a simple guide on how to play avi on htc, it also helps to play other video like flv, mkv, mp4, wmv, 3gp, and more on htc
Thanks not the OP but I still found this thread useful and informative

Question about playable file types

Why cant you play avi file types on the evo? Do I need to get a special media player?
EDIT:
1. is there a file type I can convert them to?
2. if so what software can I use to convert them?
Thanks in advance!
You can play most avi's with Rock Player, however it depends on what codec the file is. If you want to play with the stock media player, you need to convert to an mp4 with h264 baseline codec. You can use handbrake to do this, there are guides everywhere. Heres one:

How do you watch videos?

How do you watch videos on your EVO? Do you convert them and then drop the file on you sdcard? Stream from Dropbox or something else?
I usually convert them to one of the supported file types.
I just throw the video file on my sd card then use RockPlayer. I use to convert all my video files but RockPlayer can play just about all types of video files. There is a lite version on the marketplace. I dont think it can play .mkv files tho. Hope this helps.

I third this. It actually plays .mkv files just fine, or at least I haven't had any trouble with them yet. I recall you have to set it to software decoding rather than hardware, but I'm not sure if this is related to playing .mkv's or if it's for all filetypes.

You're probably right about 720p, I just checked and the videos I was watching are 624x352, which still look smooth and clear on the EVO.

He all... just thought I'd follow up. Tried a 720 .mkv file... just as I suspected. Slow and choppy. I will have to convert that file type to a mp4. so... uh... thanks!
Mkv and mp4 are just containers. As long as the codec used is h264, the video should play just fine. I have many 720p videos on my phone that play just fine. Just make sure to keep the bitrate under 3000kbps or so.
