Is it bad to charge the battery when it doesn't need charging yet (for example if it's still at 60%)? I'd like to use the Google Navigation on my Desire more but I don't because I think the phone is gonna die while I'm driving. So I'd like to charge it before I start driving but if the battery is still pretty high and I charge it, will it ruin the battery?
No, this new type of batteries have no harm if charged even when are not at very low level
The Li (ion and polymer) batteries actually work better if topped up regularly and never get deep discharged.
I've heard, that these batteries should be kept 20-80% charged. Sometimes it's good to fully discharge and recharge to 100% just to reset some kind of memory in the battery.

It's used to recalibrate it. But doing that (depleting til it shuts down by itself > charging to 100%) once a month should be plenty.

Anyone have any ideas why my phone refuses to charge my battery correctly and the wall charger that came with my two spare batteries does a much better job? If I charge my battery through the phones usb I get maybe 5 hours of use but when I use the charger that came with my 2 cheap spare batteries I'll get 8 to ten no matter which battery I use.

basically it is charging your battery correctly. The problem you are likly having are
1) your battery stats is off and you ahvent recalibrated it so the phone is stopping the charge early
2) you leave the phone plugged in for long periods of time because the phone does not use a trickle charge process it does nto stay at 100% and can acctually be anywhere from 90-100% charged even though the light is green
the reason there is no trickle charge is to try to prolong the life of the battery. the battery stats is to try and help the phone gauge when to shut the phone off and when to stop charging so it doesnt completly drain the battery or over charge it. both have benefits and draw backs.
try recalibrating your battery so that the phone has a better understanding of the acctual life (you may charge the battery fully in the wall charger then put it in the phone wipe battery stats in recovery and the let it drains till the phone shuts off. recharge it fully and go on your way.
the no trickle not a lot you can really do about that.
Guess that makes sense. So you think I should get a full charge from my wall charger then wipe battery stats from my recovery then let it drain 100 % then full charge it and it should recalibrate it?

I just got some new batteries for my i-9000. I am wondering, I have always heard LIthium batteries do not like to be fully discharged. I want to perform a calibration on the new battery, but all the battery calibration apps say
1.Fully charge the battery
2.Press calibrate battery button.
3.Run the phone fully flat until the battery dies.
4.Fully charge the battery to 100% uninterrupted.
Now, step 3, going all the way until the phone dies, is that a good thing to do or a bad thing to a new battery?
Letting your cellphone's battery drain until the phone dies is a normal thing that won't damage your battery, because the battery won't really go to 0% charge.
Cellphones always shutdown it-self when the battery levels get too low (like 3%), to avoid the damage it would do in the Li-ion battery if it would go to 0%. So you have nothing to worry about.
yeah mine shuts down around 2-3% percent for that reason. You'll be fine.

other than those times, I only let my phone get to 20-40% before I plug it back in
I Use BOS Gingersense Port From Kingdom, My battery is good and i didnt do that whole discharging,recharging crap.

Calibration even worked for me too, on my Galaxy 3. Previously i was getting backup of only 1 day, but after calibration i get around 1.5 days. I know its not much improvement, but still its worth.
And you don't need calibrate frequently. Just once in two weeks is fine. And I've heard that deep discharge once a while is infact good for the battery. Correct me if I'm wrong.
waiting for phone to completely die right now. One question though can I turn on phone while charging or should I just leave it off after dieing?
I called Sammy, they told me letting the phone turn off by itself because the battery can't power it is bad for the battery in the long run, they said you can't really see the bad effect that time, they told me, we have learned on are testing that when you see the low battery message pop up that is where you need to charge the phone, that warning is where the calibration starts, now draining it to the point that the phone turn itself off is bad for the battery. Do you believe that?

It's best to recharge a cell as soon as possible if you have discharged it.
Discharge/charge cycles should be kept to a minimum, ie when you first get the battery, when you are sure you need to recalibrate, and when you've got no choice.
Top up charges are best for lithium batteries.
The charging circuitry in the phone should protect the battery from over discharge. It also protects the phone from overcharging. However, just like a spring, it's the constant charge/discharge that damages a battery. I would not run it down every day but it should not damage the battery, only cause it to wear out faster.

Try to avoid frequent full discharges. Occasional full discharges are okay.

A new Li-Ion cell will output ~4.2V when fully charged and ~3V when it is totally discharged. Every single smartphone I've owned would shut down before the cell dropped below 3.5V. Draining your phone's battery until it dies will not hurt the battery or your phone. No worries about batteries catching fire.
Repeated or frequent full discharges will wear your battery out much faster, though.
Flattened my Xoom earlier, as I do everynow and again to full cycle the battery.
Came back to it a bit later and it had charged up to 40 odd %
Used it for a while then it suddenly said the battery was flat and switched off..
Anyone else had this, am I looking at a dead battery or should I just leave it swtiched off and on charge overnight?

It shouldn't be, lithium ion batteries don't have as intense a memory problem as the old nicad batteries...maybe just wipe the batteries stats in clockwork for good measure and take it from there. Sorry I forgot to mention that this would assume you are rooted. All my Android devices have weird jumps like that, but not usually that extreme.

Lithium batteries do not like to go all the way down to dead (so low the device won't even start). They wear alot if you do. There is no reason to cykle them after the first time charge as there is no memory effect on them.
I had a laptop battery partially charged installed in my laptop and did't use it for two weeks. The battery went compleatly dead and when I charged it I only got like 20% into it before it said full. I had to buy a new battery.
So don't leave your XOOM with 1% battery for a long time. If you are not gonna use it for a prolonged time charge it up to about 75% before leaving it.
SEALen is correct, Lithium batteries should not be fully discharged it significantly shortens their lifespan, there is also no memory effect, the only battery type that ever did have one is NiCad.
The best way to keep a lithium battery healthy is to charge little and often, keep it topped up.

+ 1 to your arguments however if he is doing a calibration, i let it get to 1% before charging it again, i dont let it die i watch battery widget pro and watch the mA.. This will not fix a battery but give better indication of its lifespan

I have a 3900 mAh battery from Mugen. Ive noticed the battery lasts about 30 hours. But I find something very strange. It drains around 96% in just 15 minutes on straight boot after charging every time. In fact, the first 80% of so drains pretty quickly? Ive had it in my phone for about 2 weeks. Has anyone else noticed this or know why this may be happening. Also when at 100%, and i inplug it, goes straight to 98!
Have you done a battery calibration? Get the Battery Calibration app from the play store.
There's some argument as to whether this does anything or not, but have you conditioned the battery? That means letting it drain completely, then charging it continuously till it hits 100% - do that several times.
Its been proven that the app does nothing, which wipes battstats.ini or something
As for conditioning, its been down to around 3% before being charged. Ivehad the battery 2 weeks now.
Lithium Ion batteries have a very steep drain for about the first 15-20% and also slower charging from those levels. Once past that the drain is nearly linear, and then gets very steep at about 3.6v.

further more lithium ion batteries survive more recharge cycles if the D0D (depth of discharge) is about 25% remaining.
Basically you battery will last longer by the device not charging to 100% and letting it discharge slightly when in trickle mode, and if you don't let it die completely and charge it when it reaches around 15%-20% left.

Hmm that kind of makes sense. Everyones been telling me to not let it drop to below 35% though cause it 'wears the battery out'. Ive been charging at around 40 cause thats where itd be after a full day at work and such.
Ive been getting concerned though because ive seen screenshots of people getting 31 hours with 7 hours of screen on time.
Im at 62%, 9.5 hours total, 1 hour 7 min screen on. Thats mostly with Wifi on though.
My stock battery used to drop 10% an hour on 4g, and this one dropped ~11% on 4g just now....

Its 3900mah, divide by 650 = 6 hour charge
Its been 6 hours and its at 46% with the phone off so its not using power, and on the wall charger.

Yea its fine
It can actually can actually damage Li-Ion batteries to be fully discharged, especially for extended periods of time. It's also not good for them to be 100% charged for extended periods of time (overnight charges are a fact of life, and your battery will obviously survive). The ideal charge for them is somewhere between 40-80%. So what you're doing is actually good practice: recharge once battery gets below 40. Also, if you aren't going to have to be away from a charger all day long, it's best to unplug at around 80%.
