Using the Evo in Europe - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm traveling to Europe in a couple weeks and was going to bring my Evo. I know the radio towers there won't allow phone service and that Wifi should work just fine, but what about GPS? That would be a major function that would be useful.
Any other ideas on what might or might not be useful?

GPS will work as long as you have the proper maps.
Didn't I hear recently that Google updated their maps to include Europe???

Right, but does it get the information for the maps from the cellular service?

You just said it yourself, Radio Towers don't work so no.

Any ideas to workaround this? Anyway to preload maps? Any other programs that might be useful that can be used over there to get GPS functionality?

Should have "google" your question for your answer.
http://www.mapdroyd.com/

Why would radio towers now work? Plenty of people have cell phones over there.... I mean if anything it would be itl roaming and cost a bunch. Or is it the wrong frequences.

.....umm it would work with wifi.
Unless you had all of your maps preloaded to sd card, then it would work like that.

[Q] Need a GPS app with downloadable maps.

Because I'm in Canada and Google Navigate does not work for me.
And do I need a data plan to use google maps?
And if I don't have a data plan, is there an app where it only utilizes GPS signals, and the maps can be predownloaded and stored on USB?

looks good.
Will update if it works or not.
Do you know how this compares to the GPS you can buy at Bestbuy or Futureshop?
Like the TomTom or Garmin ones.

Google Maps does work in Canada and yes you need a data plan. I dont even use my old GPS unit anymore.
Copilot is a pretty good program with maps that can be downloaded and used without data. Good for traveling south to the US.

Don't be asking for warez on xda gonna get you into trouble.
Yea, but I never ever buy software or apps.
I managed to get the app for free but now I just need the maps for free as well.
I now realize that this is not like the warez forum I frequent everyday and I should not be asking around for free maps, but I was just being hopeful.
Read This thread and looked up co pilot and it was 2.99 for just America and 9.99 for North America. So i figured why not 3 bux cant hurt. Got the program and tried it out. Looks pretty good allows u to download 3 voices (one English regualr, British male, and Female named lisa) also after you selected which voice you want it will than ask you which maps to download first and instead of forcing you to download the HUGE map all at once it is split up to different states and areas and so forth so you can download as you please. And if you REALLLY want all the maps theres a quick button for that as well. I havent really gone out and tried the GPS right now since its late and i dont need to go anywhere but hopfully this is the app that will get me around when i dont have 3G or Haspa. I am in NYC and basicly i get no signal out in NJ and parts of Long Island so i hope this thing works when i am in those areas lol But hey its on sale for 10bux i really say give it a go and if you really dont like it returning the program is really easy and you shouldnt be afraid to spend money on apps. I enjoying purchasing apps and donating to developers =]
Okay, so mapdroyd is no go as it also uses a data plan to determine where you are.
Is there any service/app that does not use data plan?
If you root your phone and put virtuous sense rom on the phone you could use HTC Locations. In that program you can download maps, I did it and works for me.

I don't just need maps. I need an app that can track where ever I go and move my location in real time via GPS.

I have the latest Virtuous Sense Rom (0.7.0) and it doesn't have said HTC location.
I have 0.7.0 and I have locations, even downloaded the maps for the west coast.

Oh you mean locations. I was looking for HTC locations. Lemme give that a try.
so far it works with wifi and gps on.
Will test it with no wifi when im going to school.
Why is Canada 480 mbs while USA is like 1.5 gbs?
We're both the same size!
Locations does not work if you have no data plan. So I guess this phone is not a substitute for a GPS if you have no plan.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
If you need something that does NOT require a data plan (that can be used pretty much on-the-go), CoPilot may be your best bet (I'd have mentioned iGO for the Android, but unfortunately iGO is only (legally) available for OEMs and requires some kludging to get it to work gracefully on the Vision Z/G2 and is rather more expensive for its map sets).
And yes, CoPilot does have Canadian maps.

Will the i747M's GPS work in Europe?

I'm bringing my SGS3 on my Euro trip and I'm hoping the GPS will work for turn-by-turns navigation. Couldn't find any info on this and I don't see why it wouldn't work but just want to make sure. Has anyone tried their NA phone in Europe for GPS?
Thanks
Should work fine. GPS uses satellites so doesn't matter where you are as long as the gps chip can pull information from them. I used my old windows mobile phone there with no issues a while back.

It will work fine, but you don't want to use the navigation app since it uses google maps which require a data connection. You DON'T want to use your data in Europe , unless you have a special plan or are on another carrier while you are there. You should get the free navigation mapfactor and download the maps you need.

Thanks Halmo I've been looking for a data-less map for awhile and Sygic wants a fortune.
Thanks for the replies.
Halmo yeah I wasn't planning on using Google Maps, the 80mb size limit for offline maps is too short for the distances we'll be travelling.
I'll definitely check out Mapfactor though thanks

I am currently in Europe (Germany, Czech Republic, Austria) for work and when I arrived I contacted AT&T via their chat and asked for the unlock code for my S3 and they gave it to me no questions asked. I went to the local T-mobile here and bought a prepaid SIM ($15 Euro) and it has worked fine for over a month.

Offline GPS

I'm traveling from NYC to Niagara Falls then to Toronto. I don't have roaming on my phone. But I still need a GPS unit and no one I know actually owns one. So what apps for Android can I use for my Note 2 for offline navigation? I might as well take advantage of the 5.5" screen and grab a GPS app from the Play Store. I'm leaving in a few weeks.
Thanks!
CoPilot Live Premium is a great, if a bit pricy GPS app. It has offline maps and navigation, plus points of interest, live traffic, etc. If you want to try it out, there's a free version on the market without voice guidance and some other features missing.

You can use google maps. Save the parts that you will be traveling through to offline. I have done this when I go into the wilderness and have no service. Works great and free. just takes some space on your card.

i have been in toronto last sept for sightseeing and visiting relative...i did the same thing using the pre-load method..but in my personal opinion it is not convenience as i need to load the map from the hotel which has wifi, but then when i get to my relative home (they are elder ppl which is computer illiterate) and dont have wifi in their house, it forced me to do the roaming to just get the navigation route to my hotel.
after that i find out this mapfactor which is very convenience.
NavFree USA will work for you.
Even if my calling/texting/internet usage doesn't work in Canada. Will the GPS still work? I don't want to be charged any roaming fees.

Ya it must be working you may give a try yourself by turning both your cellular network and WiFi off and trying to get your location on the map..
Please press the thanks button if you like my work...
Have a good day...
U can test drive those apps navfree / mapfactor in the us before heading to canada!
I think I'm just gonna stick with Google navigation. I tried the others and I didn't really like them. I'll just download the maps through wifi.

[Q] GPS Not working - ideas for a fix?

I've had a long standing suspicion that the GPS stopped working on my Desire after I flashed a new ROM to it, but I've always been indoors when I've thought about testing it.
The other day I tried to use Google Maps to get around a town and it couldn't determine my location. I was on foot with no tall buildings around me, in other words it should have found my location easily and quickly, but no matter what I did it just didn't work.
I don't know when it stopped working, I don't know if it was a flash of some ROM/recovery/bootloader/radio that did it, but for some reason it just doesn't work anymore.
Any ideas on how to get it to work??

Have you tried FiX GPS from Googlr Play?
There are lots of 'GPS Fix' apps. Which one are you talking about?
I took a screenshot of what the app said. It just sits on that screen the whole time.
Try the: top ntp app from play store. It worked for me.
Read the instructions and good luck!

[Q] Application requires to be located by means of Cell Phone

Ok, here is the thing....
First off, my phone is an AT&T SGS III running "The Devils Reject_v7" just fine. The application I am referring to in the title is UltimatePoker, a licensed Poker site in Nevada. The requirement is that your cellphone needs to be located and trackable in the State of Nevada to participate in playing online poker.
Now, this works fine with the above mentioned ROM. It is an Android v4.1.1. Now, whenever I try to upgrade to a version higher then that, i.e. 4.2, 4.2.2, 4.3, The login into the Poker site will fail with the message "Cellphone cannot be located" switching back to the above ROM will allow access again.
Here what I tried so far...
1. Changed the Modem to different versions on the above ROM....no difference, still working
2. Changed the ROM and applied all different modems I could find .... No Success, it always failed.
My question would be,
1. What difference is between rooted Stock and "The Devils Reject_v7" which prevents stock from being found?
2. If it is some mod in the kernel, can this mod be implemented in rooted stock or even in never versions of android.
I know, this is not really a topic many folks might be interested in, but maybe someone will just look at it....
Firstly, you're in the wrong section, this should probably be in q/a, but anyhow, some people have problems with GPS when upgrading to higher versions, and i'm assuming the app uses gps to track, so have u confirmed it working before running the app?

the app is a windows app and requires the phone to ne found not by GPS but by triangulation. The online poker site has my cellphone number and when I logon they request from the service provider (in my case AT&T) the current location of the phone. AT&T will use triangulation if on 3G. If I am on LTE the triangulation is not working. I have to use as APN wap.cingular to make it work. And that's where I get lost. I know that the SGS3 is using a combined 3G-4G chip. this is probably the problem. HTC does not has the issue as far as I know...
Thanks for the answer though.
Since this is my first OP do you know how to move it to Q&A?
Thanks
