I'm traveling from NYC to Niagara Falls then to Toronto. I don't have roaming on my phone. But I still need a GPS unit and no one I know actually owns one. So what apps for Android can I use for my Note 2 for offline navigation? I might as well take advantage of the 5.5" screen and grab a GPS app from the Play Store. I'm leaving in a few weeks.
Thanks!
CoPilot Live Premium is a great, if a bit pricy GPS app. It has offline maps and navigation, plus points of interest, live traffic, etc. If you want to try it out, there's a free version on the market without voice guidance and some other features missing.

try mapfactor navigator USA free app and free maps...but the size of the maps are large....
You can use google maps. Save the parts that you will be traveling through to offline. I have done this when I go into the wilderness and have no service. Works great and free. just takes some space on your card.

i have been in toronto last sept for sightseeing and visiting relative...i did the same thing using the pre-load method..but in my personal opinion it is not convenience as i need to load the map from the hotel which has wifi, but then when i get to my relative home (they are elder ppl which is computer illiterate) and dont have wifi in their house, it forced me to do the roaming to just get the navigation route to my hotel.
after that i find out this mapfactor which is very convenience.
NavFree USA will work for you.
Even if my calling/texting/internet usage doesn't work in Canada. Will the GPS still work? I don't want to be charged any roaming fees.

Because I'm in Canada and Google Navigate does not work for me.
And do I need a data plan to use google maps?
And if I don't have a data plan, is there an app where it only utilizes GPS signals, and the maps can be predownloaded and stored on USB?

Will update if it works or not.
Do you know how this compares to the GPS you can buy at Bestbuy or Futureshop?
Like the TomTom or Garmin ones.

Copilot is a pretty good program with maps that can be downloaded and used without data. Good for traveling south to the US.

Don't be asking for warez on xda gonna get you into trouble.
Yea, but I never ever buy software or apps.
I managed to get the app for free but now I just need the maps for free as well.
I now realize that this is not like the warez forum I frequent everyday and I should not be asking around for free maps, but I was just being hopeful.
Read This thread and looked up co pilot and it was 2.99 for just America and 9.99 for North America. So i figured why not 3 bux cant hurt. Got the program and tried it out. Looks pretty good allows u to download 3 voices (one English regualr, British male, and Female named lisa) also after you selected which voice you want it will than ask you which maps to download first and instead of forcing you to download the HUGE map all at once it is split up to different states and areas and so forth so you can download as you please. And if you REALLLY want all the maps theres a quick button for that as well. I havent really gone out and tried the GPS right now since its late and i dont need to go anywhere but hopfully this is the app that will get me around when i dont have 3G or Haspa. I am in NYC and basicly i get no signal out in NJ and parts of Long Island so i hope this thing works when i am in those areas lol But hey its on sale for 10bux i really say give it a go and if you really dont like it returning the program is really easy and you shouldnt be afraid to spend money on apps. I enjoying purchasing apps and donating to developers =]
Okay, so mapdroyd is no go as it also uses a data plan to determine where you are.
Is there any service/app that does not use data plan?

Why is Canada 480 mbs while USA is like 1.5 gbs?
We're both the same size!
Locations does not work if you have no data plan. So I guess this phone is not a substitute for a GPS if you have no plan.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
If you need something that does NOT require a data plan (that can be used pretty much on-the-go), CoPilot may be your best bet (I'd have mentioned iGO for the Android, but unfortunately iGO is only (legally) available for OEMs and requires some kludging to get it to work gracefully on the Vision Z/G2 and is rather more expensive for its map sets).
And yes, CoPilot does have Canadian maps.
Okay, to the point. I have recently began learning and modding the ba-jebus out of my phone and I have had one major problem. The GPS doesn't work. With my knowledge of triangulation and the hours of research I have done reading threads on here complaining about similar issues, I have figured that my phone isn't connecting to multiple towers at one time. When I used the stock ROM for the Inspire it worked just fine, but ever since I used CM7, LeeDroid, and even AR, the GPS has been whack. Y'all are probably thinking, "Why doesn't he just use satellite GPS tracking?" Well my answer is, "I don't want to waste money on something I don't absolutely need if I can just utilize a bit of math on my phone to find my position on this rock we call Earth." So, what I'm asking for, is how would I go about allowing my phone to connect to more than one tower at one time. Is it something to do with the build.prop, or my APN settings, or something further down in the radio flash?
Do you even have mobile location checked in settings-location. Also cell towers is not gps and what do you mean that GPS tracking cost money?

I do have "Use Wireless Networks" checked. You're right about the cell towers not being GPSs, but your phone can use the ping between three towers to determine its position between the three, allowing for a GPS type system. What I was referring to in my above post was that "Where I come from, to use a satellite guided tracking system, you must pay money."
I know how cell positioning works, but I don't think you can influence it as a user.
Also how do they make you pay for using gps?

Agreed, how come you pay for satellite navigation? If you are referring to the navigation apps, many of them are for free: waze, google maps brut mod and many others.
I think he means he doesn't have gps on his plan. I remember that before you had to pay extra for that, but now I'm pretty sure it just comes with your phone so long as your phone has gps capabilities.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
as far as i know you can just see the nearest cell tower by you
because everything is broadcasted and only the nearest responds
but i could be wrong
gps costs? its passive, why should it cost something?
do you mean a-gps?
maybe you take a look at "Gps-Status" nice app with a-gps download
I do use GPS-Status for the compass, and if satellite GPS is free now, then I will stop trying to use triangulation.
I just went outside and tried the satellite GPS, and it took a minute to find a satellite, but it works. Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help.

It will work fine, but you don't want to use the navigation app since it uses google maps which require a data connection. You DON'T want to use your data in Europe , unless you have a special plan or are on another carrier while you are there. You should get the free navigation mapfactor and download the maps you need.

Hi I have a data plan with Rogers so the a-gps should be picking location with maps or waze. I was driving this morning but the gps was searching the whole time. I was on 4g during this time. All 3 of the boxes under location services are checked.
Thanks for any ideas
Depends heavily on the position inside your car.
The closer to a window or the windscreen the better. Try holding it up to the drivers window for a few seconds and see if it locks on.
Even the best GPS isn't going to work if it's completely shielded from the satellites by the metal roof.

Should not have to restart your phone every time you want to use navigation.
I am having the same issue.
The GPS icon won't even display in the info bar without a restart.
Do you think this is a hardware or software issue ??
I notice about once a day on average that the gps icon will show up in the status bar. Sometimes it's only for a second or two and sometimes it's there for a couple of minutes. One time I saw it and it just seemed to last forever (I didn't time it but I'd guess 15-30 minutes).
I've gotten messages a few times about apps not being able to access location services. I don't use maps very much but I had it open the other day and it just froze up on me. No message about gps but I didn't keep the app open very long after it was obvious it wasn't going to work.
I'm on rogers in Ottawa.
Edit: Just played around in maps/navigation and gps flat out doesn't work. It was using cell tower triangulation and searching for gps the whole time. I had to turn on wifi to get an accurate location.

Anyone have a home made solution or is this a warranty issue?
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda app-developers app
So, after I posted last night I went out side and checked my GPS. Sitting on the steps infront of my building I conected to GPS in google maps and navigation right away - it worked like a charm.
Then I noticed it said "4G" instead of LTE in the status bar. I live downtown surrounded by buildings and I drop to "4G' on my front steps like 90% of the time. So, I get up and walk down the block and my LTE kicks in. Low and behold, I lost GPS. It only happened briefly but I lost the signal during the switch. Then I read that the note 2 only has a-GPS and lacks regular GPS. I don't know a ton about this stuff but I did read that connecting to GPS can sometimes be an issue if you only have a-GPS and your connection sucks.
Hopefully this is something that can be fixed with a software update. Who knows, maybe this is why those of us with the I317/I317M are the last ones to get the OTA update. I'm gonna call rogers today and let them know about the issue and see what they say. I don't wanna go through the hassle of exchanging my phone if every handset has this issue right now.
Are you using the Perseus kernel? If so GPS does not seem to work correctly regardless of which location provider is used. I reverted to stock and my GPS works.

Right now I'm stock/unrooted and I intend to stay that way for the time being. I'll be heading to the mall later so I'll pay a visit to the Rogers store and Wireless Wave (awesome third party wireless store in Canada - they really know their ****) and see what they say.

Sorry I took so long to respond but I got sucked in to the mall lol.
So, long story short. Nobody has any clue and the unusually clueless staff at the rogers store (casual Christmas employees) basically said I need to talk to Samsung cuz my 15 days are up. The guys at wireless wave hadn't heard anything about anybody having any issues with gps. Finally, I went to Telus and found someone who actually had a clue and she said it was the first she'd heard of it and actually recommended I check xda.
On my way home now and then I'll call rogers. I'm not hopeful about the outcome lol.
Stay tuned...

Hello folks,
Just an update .. I have been playing around with waze (free at the appstore) for the last day and a half and my gps has been flawless.
Our GPS issues could more then likely be with the actual Navigation app that comes pre installed.
By the way Waze seems to be very impressive I must admit :good:

Interesting... I've had this issue happen only once. Nothing I did would start a GPS search. I waited about 2 hours outdoors in a car. Once I restarted the phone, it had a lock on lots of sattelites within 10 sec.
It hasn't happened since.
