Hey everyone,
Just received my Desire today, think it is an awesome phone except I have one little niggle and I'm not sure if it's just me. When I'm in the 'All programs' view if I flick the list down towards the bottom there is noticeable lag. It's weird, it only happens when it reaches the bottom but it clearly stutters and jogs a bit as it gets to the end.
Weird thing is I havn't really noticed it anywhere else in the phone. Does anyone else with the phone have this issue? It's one of the first things I noticed when I opened it and all the reviews I've seen have not mentioned any lag at all so I don't think its right!
Thanks
I notice lag when I'm running at near to 0 mb Ram left, so it could be you have too many Apps open! :O - All other times its smooth.
A shutdown+turn on (restart) would be the bes tway to end all those applications that didnt actually close.
Or install something like Advanced App Killer and just kill off unwanted processes that way.
Thanks for the replies, I havn't tried restarting the phone but I do have the Advanced App Killer and it happens even when I've just killed everything. :\
It seems to happen much more when scrolling down, not up. What software version do you both have? Mine is 1.15.161.4, I'm wondering if it is a software issue because I havn't noticed it except on this programs screen.
Its only very slight, if you start from the top of the apps list, and scroll fast all the way down, the last row has a slight lag.
But really, the reason no reviews or anyone has not mentioned this is because its a none issue. You only see it if you go looking for it and its so slight the majority of people reading this thread will have no idea what you're talking about.
I've never noticed that, but now that I try it, I have the same thing. And I do kill my apps on a regular basis.
Must be some sort of minor bug. Doesn't bother me though.

That article describes how Android should work, unfortunately it doesn't exactly work that way. There are plenty of apps that leak memory as well as devs using all sorts of undocumented API calls that make apps work in different way than intended.
It's not RAM am sure of it was the same on the hero when you got near the bottom it lagged , funny thing when you use launcher 2.1 like on Nexus one its as smooth as butter in the programs menu, I wish they had used it in Sense as it looks far better.
I wonder if any genius out there can get it working in sense and replace HTC's standard one.
I don't have the Desire, but on the Hero the scrolling slows down at the end, before it stops. What do you mean by lags? like hangs for a second or something? or snaps at the end before it stops?
A video can help.
It could be that HTC need to look into the code there.

What happens is that if I scroll down fairly quickly a few lines before the bottom there is a sort of shudder and slow down. It's a bit jittery, but it was something I noticed after I had only been using the phone a few minutes. Someone else I've shown it to notices it as well.
However Ive also just noticed that there is one single spec of dust under the screen right in the middle! Because of that I might just see if I can get a replacement. Would it be something to ask the carrier or HTC?
Its just not as smooth is the best way i can explain, it did exactly the same thing on the hero, as you start scrolling down all is fine then when you hit the bottom it could be called a tiny bit of slow down, like if you was gaming and the frame rate drops slightly so you lose the smoothness.
When i enable the 2.1 launcher its as smooth as anything and it is a far better looking apps system out of the two , i still say the same i would like to see this enabled in sense.
There was a vid on Youtube where people asked a guy doing Desire vids about this issue. His opinion was:
'it does not really lag. It is more like the system slows it down because it wants to'
Now on my HD2 when I scroll trough the start menu, it also stops on purpose(looks smooth though). On the Desire however I agree it looks more like lag then anything else..
Now that I think of it, I think I have seen this issue on every phone running Android.
Just try to ignore this issue I would say
I Dont have any such issue on mine.

I tend to use the 2.1 launcher as i prefer it to the sense look, its fine with that launcher its only when sense is enabled.

Ok nice to know. Another reason to try Stock 2.1 once I get my Desire But with Stock 2.1 on the Desire, you get 7 home screens right? (normal 2.1 aka just turning of Sense, not flashing stock rom or something)
Has anybody found a sloution for this yet (apart from getting rid of sense that i quite like so i want to keep it)??
It's a damn shame 'cause it seems to be the only place where the phone slows down and as it's quite a common place to be it really bugs me!!!
I have similar lag.
Posting a vid that shows it.
Movie is only 30 fps, so its not that clear as it seems IRL.

Quite hard to discern from the video as you mention but seems the same issue I originally posted about. On mine though it only really happens when you do a rapid scroll over a long distance, i.e. just holding my finger there and scrolling up and down as you did in the video seems fine to me. If i scroll quickly though and let it go just before the bottom it does a little jump and then keeps going again.
After using the device for a couple of weeks now, I agree with what someone else posted that its not lag but a bug. I think there is a problem with the algorithm that controls the slow down at the end, because for me it is a very noticeable jump that happens and seems to be artificial, not because the device can't handle the scroll.
yup same here,
i noticed a small lag when scrolling down in the program menu, the funny thing is... it didn't have that when i first got it.
Its when i started to put some progs on it, that it began to lag (or whatever you want to call it)
Hey! Here's what's bothering me..
GT-N7100, JB 4.1.1. - rooted - Go Launcher EX installed (with go keyboard, go power manager..)
When I swipe through the home screens (3) or go to the app drawer and flip through that, it always "stutters" a bit.. the same thing happens with scrolling the news feed in the Facebook app, scrolling some site in the Dolphin browser or just scrolling the app list in the app manager..
When I switch over to TouchWiz, it's perfectly smooth.. I can have 10 home screens filled with stuff, app drawer fast and smooth, so it seems the Go Launcher is to blame.. BUT - the same problem still exists in facebook and the browser etc. regardles of launcher used. Also, there are no app killing managers installed or active, I use go power manager simply to monitor the battery..
There's plenty of free memory, usually 1GB or more, using a HomeManager to kill TouchWiz or to disable the Go Launcher doesn't help.. could it be some lack of hardware acceleration in those apps or something, I'm not really an expert here so.. I won't go crazy over this as I'm more about using it than looking at it, I'd just like to now if it's something I can fix or my fault or is it something else.. Tried killing all but the neccessary apps through Task Manager, but to no use.. Seems kinda silly to have a quad-core 1.7GH, 2 GB RAM phone that has problems scrolling a web site..
Any advice?
Thanks guys!

Just use touchwiz launcher. I don't get why people like go launcher. It looks like cheap Chinese production to me.
Use the stock samsung browser for the smoothest experience. Other browsers, especially chrome, are known for their lag.
I don't use facebook so I can't say anything about it.
In my experience, scrolling on the stock kernel is much much smoother than all the custom kernels.
You can also wait till Google releases the next version of android with improved project butter.
Try using the app called Seeder.

I don't like TouchWiz. I can't get my main homescreen organised the way I want, the page indicator itself take like a row and a half, I don't have the app drwer options go launcher gives me etc. There's nothing cheap looking in Go Launcher, I don't get what you mean? I don't use Chrome nor the stock browser, Dolphin has a LastPass plugin which I use cause for work, cause I have like 25-30 passwords and don't want the browser to remember them.

Installed it, but no improvement, in fact, maybe I'm just imagining it, but seems worse in some cases?
Guess I'll try some custom ROM, like Omega or something. Meant to try out something else anyway, cause of the multiwindow support that can use all the apps, not just some like on stock.

I'm on omega now and I still get stutters. Any sort of scrolling has some occasional lags I've found. Notification bar included.
I notice the same stutters in my One X, s3 and note 2.

To be quite honest with you mate almost all roms ive tried that are based on the stock rom such as omega, ARHD, Wannamlite, etc all have the same stuttering/lag when scrolling around especially in the settings menu, you could try certain tweaks or mods but the difference is almost unnoticeable.. However, this issue is not present in the AOSP/CM10.1 ROMS, they are very smooth.
Has anyone noticed a 2 to 3 second lag when launching an app?
No, not at all. I don't know of any other solution then preforming a full wipe and restoring either a fresh stock image or a custom rom. That way you definitely know any wrong settings/abusive apps are gone.
Are you only noticing in certain apps? Have you modified in any way?
I would suggest ditching the LG Launcher and trying Google Now Launcher/Nova or Apex or something of that type. I did that on mine and it seems a lot more responsive.
Let me know if you need any more help.

The other option worth trying is to go to Developers option and set the animation to 0.5x and see if that made any difference.
I notice it with the stock messaging app, there is a good 2/3 second lag before it launches. Really annoying. Perhaps it could be to do with increased DPI at a guess?

Stock messaging app is slow to open as can be when opened up initially. Subsequent runs are okay.
For this reason I switched to another messaging app (Textra in this case).
thanks for all the replies.
i'm already running Nova and always turn down animations to .5x after I get a new phone
strange that nobody else is experiencing the same issue
Hello XDA,
This is my first thread on XDA and I feel as if XDA is the place to come for all Android. Here, I was hoping to bring up some issues on the beautiful Note 4. Any fixes?
Snapdragon 805 not properly optimized?
There are a few example I can give for this. When using the swipe lock screen option, with the popping colors. If you briefly touch it, the colors would come up, but pay close attention to the colors that come up. At least a few of you should notice the FPS drop when the colors rise and begin to fade, and its not bad but its concerning considering the power this phone has. Also, playing Real Racing 3 is pretty much impossible with the horrid 20 FPS the game plays at, when an 801 runs it as smooth as butter. Concerning.
Of course, the laggy multitasking button (I think thats what its called)
This is a major issue a lot of Note 4 users have complained about. Pressing the on-the-phone-button to see what apps are open is really slow at times and its frustrating cause, once again, this phone is really awesome. Any fix on this? I turned briefing off (Even if I loved it).
The occasional stutter
Honestly, this is the only other issue I've seen with this device. The 805 possibly not being optimized is kind of the main issue I've seen with the entire devices stutters. The multitasking button as well being the issue. Do you guys know any fixes for these two issues, or news on it, confirmations?
I too am finding the Note 4 shockingly slow given the specs. Browsing the Web is like walking through quicksand. Scrolling Web pages lags and stutters.
I don't get it. I had an S5 for 2 weeks and it was MUCH faster than this. ?

I've checked out the popping colors in lock screen and real racing. Both have no issues. How ever I do notice some lag with the Note 4.

No lag on real racing 3 here. Even when I was just rooted on stock Rom so I could use ps3 controller with rr3 and it was fine. And if games do lag, it's up to the game developer to optimize it for that processor, not the other way around. It's not like Sony designed their processor in a ps4 around games that don't exist yet. Don't know why u right off the bat blame the hardware when it is all software issues.
If any thing is Lagging is is the poorly optimized Sprint crap and other apps on the phone. The processor is working as it should as any benchmark will show. I really find it sad that everyone is always so quick to blame the hardware. Have any of you claiming lag this and stutter this run benchmarks? If you did you would see this hardware is running actually better than predicted.

Lol, benchmarks? Honestly, who cares about benchmarks, especially when they can be so easily manipulated by how the manufacturer sets things up. Benchmarks are meaningless. All that matters is real world performance.
That being said I've done two things which seem to have improved my performance:
1. Running the Hybrid Rom. I recommend flashing back to the stock Sprint kernel as the included kernel was causing heat issues for me (YMMV).
2. Using Wanam Xposed to disable DVFS in Advanced Settings. This REALLY helped as it has on any Samsung device I've owned.

sprint probably
I think its sprint. Some people have Verizon N4 and they have 0 lag on the phone and some dont. I dont know why, but its frustrating knowing that just because of my carrier means that my device will be slower then others. Any fixes?
And the reason why I said that the 805 may not be optimized is because there is another thread, might be on XDA, that talks about how the device slows down and speeds up the 805 at the wrong times in game with RR3.
So is it sprint?? And if there anyway around this unnecessary lag?
If you guys want me to take a video of my Note 4 with the lag I will do so and show you guys what I mean. FPS drop im popping colors occasionally and lag in multitasking button, sometimes im waiting 5 seconds for all the windows to pop up.

Im sorry, how do I do this? Ive heard this a lot and I dont know how it works >.< Easy way to explaom it?? Or possibly a video?
You have to root your phone, then install Wanam Exposed.
This gives you a lot of flexibility on changing things with touchwiz.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AESaWGWCvzY
There is a youtube with a basic overview of installing. After installing the framework, you would install Wanam, then in there is the settings you can tweak.
I got an update on my sprint note 4 on monday i believe it was and since that update i do not experience the lag i was having with the apps button , besides the normal half a second lag its supposed to have because if you hold that button down it opens the settings for what ever program you have running

Thank you so far
Thanks guys Ill check out that video. Also, XDA mobile premium app wont open on my N4 either... Well.
Do you think the video will help??
Try this. No root needed.
Go to Settings > About Device > Build Number and tap the “Build Number” row 7 times.
This will reveal a “Developer Options” setting just above “About Device”- Enable it. Tap*“Window animation scale” and set to Off.
Tap “Transition animation scale” and set to Off.
Tap *“Animator duration scale” and set to Off
The default is usually 1X, so even lowering this to .5x should speed things up a bit.
Another thing you can try is disable S Voice by double tapping the home key.
App Settings > S Voice. Uncheck "Open via the home key."
Now when you press the home key, the phone won't be waiting to see if you are going to press it a second time.
One other option would be to switch from Dalvik to ART runtime.
Go back to Developer Options > Select runtime system. Select ART. phone will reboot and reload all your apps. The only problem I found with this is every time you reboot your phone, Android will update and reload all your apps. This will take a long time if you have a lot of apps.
Anyone notice choppy transitions when going back home? I find the transitions to be super choppy and it looks like dropped frames or could it be lag. I was able to fix the issue by reducing all animations to.0.5 but its not actually a fix. I'm very surprised that this is happening on this phone. Never had this issue on the s10+.
Anyone else experiencing this?

I've noticed similar issues as well. Animations when scrolling feels intermittently choppy compared to my Pixel 3 XL. Also happens when the header drops down/hides in Samsung apps such as settings or messages.

I don't think Samsung will ever be able to compete with Google in smoothness (especially now that the Pixel is going to 90Hz too!). Sammy can put 100GB of RAM and max out CPU capabilities and still get some stutter or lag. It's very minimal since the 9th generation, but some people (like me) still notice it. Even with animations off/minimal, it's there. But reducing animations and switching to Nova launcher significantly reduces the amount I see it.
