So I just moved to a new apartment and haven't hooked up internet access yet. How realistic would it be for me to avoid getting the usual cable internet setup that people in my area normally get and just use an Evo as the network router for all my devices. My home network includes a few laptops, a desktop, a networked hard drive, and a few old cellphones that I use to connect via wifi to play music and browse internet. Does anyone have real world experience to share about how these types of setups have been working with the Evo's hotspot feature. And is it even possible for me to incorporate my networked hard drive into this kind of network as it is not wifi - only ethernet? How could I get it included? Sorry for such a noob question. I would love to stop giving my money to Time Warner and just have one phone/internet bill to pay.
Thanks,
cmus
Well that depends so much on the coverage of your area. If you don't get 4g coverage in your apartment you would be using 3g for all of your devices and that isn't going to cut it for most people. I mean it is fine for surfing the web but not for something like streaming or gaming. Plus your 3g signal could be week and you wouldn't get very good speeds period. You can check coverage maps but even then you won't know exactly until you test it out yourself....
Definitely doable if you're not a gamer and assuming your signal is strong. Its the latency that kills it for you if you are a gamer.
One of the bigger Qs I wonder about is how hot will the device get when trying to supply other devices with 3g/4g.
I know my current WiMo will over heat when doing wmTorrents and I have to take the back cover off and sit it in front of my fan on my desk at work.
currently im using Touch Pro, and when i do wifi teathering the phone gets so hot that it shuts off charging after about 60mins, and then runs on battery power for another 20 mins or so... hopefully evo will handle the wifi-teather load better that this.

Haha I use to turn my touch pro face down and put a glass with ice water on top.
The cool condensation would keep it from overheating and thus ruining my fun.
Ah , the good ol' days. Can anyone tell me why the touch pro could do wifi tethering and not the Evo? Is it android fault or the fault of the phone????
hmm, so this does not sound good. Between possible overheating issues and latency this is not something that most people seem to be excited about doing?
How about the network itself. Does using the Evo as a hotspot allow my laptops to talk to each other via a LAN or does the Evo only share the internet connection with all the connected devices? For example, if I have a hard drive full of music on one computer, can I share that folder and stream it on a second computer if both computers are connected to the Evo?

the evo can do wifi tethering, it's just $30 a month until we get it rooted.
But can he use the phone too?

I'm considering the evo for this very purpose as well, but i am unclear as to whether I would be able to use the phone to make calls at the same time as i am using it as a hotspot. There seems to be a lot of varying opinions on this, does anyone know the real deal?
thanks!
With the over heating issues, again, that why I just pull the battery cover off and sit it on my desk in front of a small 4-5" fan and keep it cool. I have run it for hours that way before as I use wmTorrent.

as long as you're on a 4G connection it'll work simultaneously. There's a completely separate antenna(e) for 4g, while 3g is on the same antenna as voice calls causing it to drop to 2.5g

that was/is my fear.
if i understand your note correctly; if i am on 3g, i will not be able to use voice and data at the same time, thus rendering the hotspot ability much less useful. I was hoping to use this in my car while driving and get rid of my 3g card that i currently use

No it is not. At least without root it isn't.

Go to step 13 to see what I'm talking about. The chip supposedly is capable of n. Just not right now. Hopefully someone can "unlock" it.
Man, i am sooo royally pissed off. ill try to shorten this story on what happened. Ok. im on the internet earlier in the day with no problem. then a storm rolled thru here and seemed to knock out my data service. i couldnt connect to internet at all. In WM and in Android. i was booting into Android when i realized data had went out. after doing all i could do, wit no success, i called customer service.
they kept sending me in damn circles, asking questions that has nuthn to do with the problem. so after goin in circles and talkin to this person and that person, they finally realize that they r stupid and transfer me to a tech person. we trouble shoot. still no internet wrkn. damn.. so they said last resort is to take my sim card out and put it in another AT&T phone. this is to determine if its a service problem or a device problem. well i put my sim card in my girl phone and it loads up her internet wit no prob. aint dat a beootch. ok. so the tech lady says its a device problem and transfer me to Warranty, since im still covered.
im like, how n da hell can it be a device problem. i was just using it fine. only thing wrong is my internet not connecting. my voice calls and txts wrks fine. nothing happened to this device in that short period of time to make me think the device broke somehow. Anyways, they said they going to send me a "refurbished" phone and she read the conditions. REDDDD FLAGGGG...lol u shoulda seen the look on my face. lmao she started askin me all sorts of questions like did i drop the phone, any scratches, any water damage, had me check water marker..lol..
i was getting worried they gonna find a reason to void me. i said i had some light scratches/abrasions. she saiD, ONCE I SEND MY PHONE BACK IN, IF ITS DETERMINED THAT I VOIDED MY WARRANTY BY DEEP SCRATCHES OR WHATEVER, THEY GONNA CHARGE MY ACCOUNT $370. DAMNNNN and for a damn refurbished phone at that...i was soooo mad...im like ok...send me da damn thing then. priority mail . 2 days at most. once i get that send my phone in. ok..thats done and we hang up.
Now im worried from scratches and from all the tweaks ive done to this phone. i easily have plenty of reasons they could try to void me. i have wayy too many system tweaks and Android, which they would discover. i cannot afford some b.s. processing charge of $370, if its determined i voided warranty. she said deep knicks or scratches would void it. im like for dat damn much, id rather juss buy a new phone. not pay that much for a refurb one..lmfao
ok...so im thinkn n still pissed my internet not wrkn. I really start thinkn. i remembered i had the high speed internet tweak(hspda) enabled on windows mobile. and guess what......
After i disabled it, soft reset, and started back up, NOW MY (!()_ing internet is wrkn. after all these hours and talkin with customer service and techs. i cant believe da ish..lol i think something messed up my tweak. so disabling it puts my phone back to standard 3g. which in turn allows my internet to wrk properly again...FIGURESS.
now i gotta call these damn people back and stop the refurb phone from being shipped. they not gonna get me for all that $$$ i juss had a really bad feeling when she said i had to send my phone in..
srry if this seems long as hell, i had to vent....i was soooooooo pissed off. this is my only internet connection at the moment. whether its mobile or im tethering. she slmost got me on dat one..lol she was like what u say, u tether? im like , oh lord, i done let the beans out now..lmao so now im bout to get off this net n call the people back and tell them to cancel it. I WAS THE TECH PERSON TO FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM IN THE END. i juss wished i wouldve thought to disable the high speed tweak first. i didnt think that mattered cuz it wrkd perfectly b4. those tech people at at&t dont know jack squat..lol
man...im tired...thnk u for reading/listening. i had to vent. problem amd situation SOLVED BY ME IN THE END. now im off to callin them back to cancel that package they gonna send.. AT&T, u not gonna het me for almost $400..lol ****..id buy an ipad or some tablet for that..lol goodnight people, if im not too tired, ya might catch me on Android finally. dayuumm. i was supposed to be booted in Androidd since like 5p.m. or so. its now 12:06a.m. godaaaayyuuummm im like 7hrs late..lmao better late than never.

YOU definitely need to put stock rom bck in. A Custom rom or flashed device is a guareenteed void. They be trying to look for anything to void. That's messed up.

AT&T...ha, I got lots of bad stories with their 611 that I should write a book with them!
Did I felt it was fair for them to replace my Treo 600 with a brand new 650? Sure, please do, no complain! Did I felt it was fair for them to replace Treo 680 I bought without contract with a refur one? I was pissed. Was I any happy when they replaced my Tilt with another Refur one that I once again bought it at full retail? Grrr...what's the point? No need to kill any more brain cell since that's how they have been for years and the last refur I got didn't look anything like a refur anyway. Gosh, I missed those days when you could walk into a Co Owned store and get a brand new replacement phone and be on your way!
They asked me the same questions about dropping the phone and etc. They told me they'd charge me if they found out I caused the phone to go nuts. Did I dropped my phone, yes. Was it the main cause for the phone to go nuts? I doubt since the time I dropped the phone to the date I needed any kind of replacement was like months apart. I did clean the phone up real good and hard reset it back to its default stage, but that was all that I did. As long as the water damage label didn't change colour, I'd think you should be fine. Droid wasn't out back in the day when I was using Treo or the Tilt, but I did had a lots of apps installed on them and I did used regedit on the Tilt, but they never charged me a bit.
I am glad your internet is back...a few tricks I learned with AT&T 611 is you gotta stand your ground. If they say it's the handset issue but you are getting phone calls and texts thru...guess what, call that a Network Issue and make them work it back. Yours was probably just the tower didn't agree with your phone after the storm and somehow both found their way to work back together. All these years with AT&T, I had signal issue right by my house. I live right next to the city hall and police station. Everytime I call them, instead of telling me they need a Tower by my house, they tried to tell me I had no signal around my house were (yes, WERE) because ...
I live next to the police station, handset issue, my respond was no, if I drive to the other side of the police station but stay within the same distance, I'd have full bar, so don't blame it to the police radio, own up to your network sucks around my house.
Old SIM card. I went to the store and got my SIM replace, called 611 on my way home...heehee, call dropped right when I got near my house.
Using the $15 internet plan on the Tilt. how is that gonna affect my phone call? You wanna tell me I need the darn internet in order to make phone calls? And how come my Tilt runs on HSDPA when I stand in just about anywhere in Downtown Los Angeles? Don't tell me it's a data plan issue, build a tower around here!
phone didn't get update because it stayed on all the time, so turn off your phone, take the battery out for about 10 mins and it should fix the problem. Er...correct me if if I am wrong, ok? I am supposed to turn off my phone every now and then so it can update itself? (Yes) Um...so you telling me my phone would update itself if I were to shut it down and take the battery out? (yes) I am sorry, you gonna have to explain to me a bit more cause I'd imagine electronic stop working the moment when the power source disappear! So you telling me your computer would update itself if you shut it off tonight when you leave even if AT&T IT Dept told you not to? (Err...sir, I am gonna have to transfer you to the tech dept to troubleshot your phone) LOL I thought so!
The material of the house I am in. Hey numb nut (on the inside!) Didn't I just told you I have problems making phone calls within two blocks from my house? I think that's a clue that I have problems even OUTSIDE OF MY HOUSE SINCE MY HOUSE IS NOT AS BIG AS TWO CITY BLOCKS!
handset issue. Really? Funny, I had stick my SIM Card into Treo 650, 680, Blackjack, Old LG AT&T locked phone (Green Screen!!!), unlocked quad bands, unlocked tri bands and guess what? Same issue! Either can't make calls or drop calls or breaking up during calls! Build a tower!
my fingers were blocked the ant. Oh gosh, get me the manager!
Seriously, I had a lot of horrible stories with AT&T, I was with them ever since Pac Bell! I finally got to the point to say Fewest drop calls, yes, only if you can make the call first!
Don't let them blame you. If you run into the same kind of problem again, check other AT&T phones you can get your hands on. And if you can make calls and texts, chance for it being handset issue or SIM issue is slim to none, at least speaking from my experience.
Another little trick I learned was to call and flat out say I want to cancel my account. From all these years with them, they never once said "OK, done." They always always do their best to listen to my problems and then try to do something to make me stays. I had the "1st Incoming Minute" for free on every bill; Early Night and Wkend for free as long as I don't cancel; one free month; get to keep my $15 internet plan for as long as I keep my account open. Took me two weeks to actually cancel my account with them and during that two weeks, they even called me to follow up with my issue. When I finally left them, my bill was like 100 bucks a months with 1500 day time, 5000 night and weekend, over 15,000 (yes, you read that right) mins rolled over, first incoming mins free, early night and weekend for free, $15 internet plan on a Smartphone, free insurance...
Good luck with AT&T, just learn to laugh at the things they tell ya since even their tech dept thinks those over at the 611 are idiots! And if they already sent the refur out, I think you'd be fine if you call them first, get to a manager or supervisor and write down that person's name, get them to promise you are not going to be charge for that phone since you they know what they sent you by the IMEI number and send it back with that UPS or FedEx label. And if they end up charging ya, call them back and demand to talk to no one else but that one supervisor you spoke to.
SORRY for this rather long reply
y, i waseah, im feeling both of yall's story. i can definitely relate. lmao we had called them back last night to try to cancel, but they said already processed. so when we get the device they ship, either refuse package or ship it back to them. ok. plus we got them to refund the $12 dollar fee for using priority mail or fed ex.
this the Real kicker though, although i got internet wrkn again, somethin aint right. i can tell n feel it. now, i have the 3g symbol up there. i had to disable my hspda/hsupa to get internet wrkn. i got that high speed fix thru the tilt 2 Data fix. ok. now thats diabled, internet wrkn. should be no complaints, right? Nooooo thru various methods of testing the network speed, im not getting 3g speeds although it shows im on it or using it. i know by using opera mini or skyfire, i wont get true results. so i use opera mobile 10 and explorer. opera mobile shows me at a measley 57kbps....OMFG..what....it always at least showed me at edge speeds or greater b4. even when i boot into Android and use their speedtest.net app, same b.s. results. damn, i cant win..lol
So anyways, i start thinkn if that data fix is messing something up. so i uninstall it. soft reset. fire her back up. now, theoritically, it should be back to stock network settings or speed. i check the advanced connection settings and see it was back to stock. ok. i run more speed tests. i get the same results. i couldnt believe it. so i know it wasnt the data fix cab messing it up now. i reinstall it. enable the hspda/hsupa. then soft reset. internet will not wrk now with it enabled. i disable it, internet wrks, but at ****ty speeds. lol so i dont know what the hell the deal is. it shows the big 3g icon and little one above the bars but im not getting that speed. let me tell u, b4 yesterday, i was normally pulling anywhere from 1000+kbps to 3000kbps. thats 1 mb to 3mb download speeds. NOW, im only pulling like 57kbps or .57mb download speed. how the hell is that possible now. lol i even check other settings to make sure everything still the same. like in windows media, if u press menu, then options, it allows u to pick the connection speeds or whateva and some other things that have check boxes by them. its all still the same like i had it b4. so i dont know, Something definitely is not right. im at a loss for words and tired of stressn about this. if this dont get fixed soon, im pretty positive me n my woman gonna drop At&T like a bad habit. this dont make no sense. oh well, im glad to have intenet bck, even if sloww. any internet speeds is better than none..lol but im not gnna let this slide for to long. probaly in a few days or so, ima call them back and DEMAND they check the network. cuz although im getting internet and 3g symbol shows, it not a true reading. im at like dial up modem speeds..WHAT A CLASSIC FAIL FOR AT&T. now i have a horry story to tell...lmfao
its official....AT&T done dropped the ball n %$&^ed up. Im tethered to computer now. I went to speedtest.net to check my speed. Im using the google chrome browser. Do u know what it shows my download speed at?
0.03mb what part of the game is that? b4 yesterday, i had on avg. 1-3mb speeds. Now im at 0.03mb Thats not gonna cut it. Even here on this forum now, pages takin forever to load up. I am sooo not used to these slow ass speeds. I guess ive been spoiled lately on the high speed.
We gonna call them again soon after i cool off about it. So they can be more helpful. cuz i know ima cuss them out. ive been with them for too long to have to settle for this kind of service or performance. My woman tired of them also. She been with at&t even longer than me. I used to be on sprint. like a decade ago. lol damn im feelin old n im not. i switched from sprint back then cuz i was constantly going over my minutes. No matter how i upgraded the plan, i would go over n always be an extra $200-$300 dollars on top of my bill. I couldnt have that plus back then they didnt have an unlimited plan. Sprint, i might be coming back to yall. Now they have an unlimited plan, and some decent phones. The prices are better also. Ive been on my old cingular plan still. i never switched to a new at&t plan.
Now i hope the Dell Streak will work on sprint also. Its supposed to work on any network, but i want proof. lol if it doesnt, then i guess ima opt for the new EVO 4g. which is a great second choice. i dont know, im trying not to be pissed off about this anymore but its hard. Especially since i use my device so much for everything. Its my only source of internet connection. If i cant tether, i cant get on the net. they always throwing monkey wrenches in the game.
This is more than juss a One time Bad experience. Its completely unacceptable. Especially if im paying $49.99 on top of my bill for the premium unlimited data service. Now my Data aint worth |||#$#..lol u know what i wanted to say. sorry for the slip ups n language. I know younger folks be surfing this site also. So AT&T, YOU REALLY MESSED UP WITH THIS CUSTOMER. I pay too much on my bill to deal with this. They should be on their hands and knees trying to solve my problem and any other persons problem. id have to say that once Iphone came to at&t, they went downhill. point blank. now ima press submit reply, which will take like forever to process thru....dayyyuummm...this definitely gonna cut back my posting. lmfao im so impatient when it comes to the net.
Has anyone else had this issue, that although ur device is showing you in 3g, the speeds arent matching up? 3g speed supposed to be 1mb or better. now, although it shows 3g, my download speed is .57mb from my phone and 0.03mb tethered to computer. I feel like throwing my phone against the wall.
HTC listen to complaints
HTC is better than ATT. I had a problem with my Tilt 2 a few months ago and ATT would not fix it. The screen got a watery look under it. I think the display was leaking. I call ATT and HTC and they said it was damage that I had caused and was not cover. I got pissed because the phone was only a few months old. So a few day later HTC sent me a email requesting my feed back from the recent tech call I made. Well I put a very bad responsed and explained how I felt like the phone was defective and should be covered under warranty. One week later a HTC rep called and informed me that she regret I was have problems with my phone and was the tech I talk to rude or not helpful. Then she told me that my phone was damaged by use but HTC was going to fix it for free if I payed for shipping to a repair shop. I sent in they fixed and happy ending! I did drop my phone which caused the leaky display. I feel a cell phone should be able to take a few drops. I love my Tilt 2 but feel I have baby it all the time. I love my Tilt 2 more with a cooked leo rom that works better than the factory rom.

thanks for that insight. Although, im not sure what HTC can do about my data other than sending me a new device. i might try that after i call at&t again in a few days. especially if the problem doesnt get fixed. glad it wrked out for ya though. warranty told me any "Deep Scratches" will result in Voided warranty. she said if u can run ur fingernail across the scratch and it gets stuck, then its a deep one. come on now..lol thats juss a matter of opinion. i cant risk them adding that $370 dollar processing charge to my bill. which will in turn probaly cut my service off since itll go over the limit..with that and my phone bill. At&T=FAIL at the moment, im so used to fixing tech issues or problems myself. At&t, i cant fix ur cell towers for u, especially for free.
I was kinda amazed at how much more i knew about my device than the customer service or tech person. i told the tech i was testing the internet with opera mini 5, opera mobile 10, and Skyfire. She about had an Orgasm, n was about to ask me how to do all that, but she caught herself and said we need to get back to ur problem. Gimme a break..lol i think i might need to be a tech. They couldnt even get my internet back workin. I had to figure it out in the end. They supposed to have high powered computers and stuff to read data from the phone and stuff. They supposed to be the ones to figure out my problem with their device. Not the other way around. I might honestly look into trying to switch jobs to becoming a trouble shooter or tech, since thats what it seems im very good at. even my woman, with her masters in computer field, i know more than her when it comes to hardware or mobile devices. She be asking me to fix stuff on her computer. Im like, damn, u need to give me ur degree then...lol its all good. shes just more in the software engineering/information system most of my knowledge is hands on experience thru trial and error. I have some Computer Science under my belt, but i never finished at Old Dominion University. Time to go back and finish.
My internet speeds have picked up again. Only seems to do it in Android though. I still cant enable my high speed data fix. When i do, the internet wont work at all. It did b4 the incident. The Fed Ex guy juss came to the door with the package. I refused it, so they can ship that refurbished phone right back..lmao so slowly but surely, my internet speeds are getting better but theres still something funny about all of it. Especially now that i cant enable the high speed data fix that enables HSPDA/HSUPA. hmmmm
i've had the same issue with the high speed data tweak as well. happened to me 3 times. It would increase my internet speed for a day or so then nothing.
theres one registry edit you have to revert to get data back. forgot which one it is. I'm thinking the network is seeing it as an error and kind of blacklisting your device, but thats just a guess.
Also i've turned in phones under warranty and they ask you if it has any scratches that will get caugh on your fingernail. I did and was as frustrated as you, but my device was bricked so i sent it in anyway and was never charged.
Next time you have an issue with your device and it really does need to be replaced, go to a device support center, they'll change it on the spot and tell you right there if your device is gonna be rejected.
ATT gave me the same crap about my daughter's phones. 9 months old, still under warranty, but it has scratches. I argued that a phone couldn't make it through 12 months without some scratches and that their warranty was BS and I was very unhappy. I told them that the next time I renew I'm changing companies. She put me on hold to talk to a "supervisor" who then "Waived" the possible charges in case of scratches.
I have not seen this for the Incredible II yet. I tried running my PS3 through the wifi connection on the droid and the PS3 keeps signing me out. The PS3 seems to connect to the Incredible II ok and lets me get to a certain point, then all of a sudden the PS3 says that I have been signed out. I can sign back in but in a minute or so I am signed out again. I am not sure what is going on.
Any help would be appreciated.
gaming connections require alot of bandwidth that a 3G tether may not be able to give you. It may just be your PS3 signing you out because theres either not enough Bandwidth or you were pinging too high. this prevents people from lagging all over the place or dropping out mid-game because of an unreliable connection. the 3G hotspot is really more of a "oh crap, i have to download that presentation before the meeting" kinda thing. my only advice to you is to either step up to a 4G LTE hotspot or a wifi router connected to a solid land-line.
Thanks
That is what I was afraid of. I wanted to set up the PS3 in my car for my kid for a long drive. I can't afford the 4G hotspot right now. Thanks for the information though.

wow, kudos for the effort to keep the kid happy, my parents would tell me to get a straw and suck it up!
you may just have to tell your kid to live with a good long single-player game until he gets to where he's going. online-gaming while on-the-move isnt really a feasible concept at this time... atleast not for cheap
So within 1st 3 days of upgrading to my awesome SGS3 on T-MO, I noticed that anything data related was down to an absolute crawl. Turns out I was streaming all my Amazon music ONLINE and that sucked up my entire month's allowed bandwidth and so was stuck on <56k speeds until my cycle renewed TWO WEEKS later. So I somehow made do without any data until then.
So fast forward 2 weeks later, and I'm throttled ALREADY!! Anyone have any tips/advice on how to keep my data usage lower? I know I can use wifi whenever possible, but even doing so I'm already capped at my data limit before I'm throttled by like 99%. Alternatively, is there any way to increase the "unlimited" cap before I get throttled? I just upgraded my contract and don't want to deal with the ETF/changing carriers.
Any help would be much appreciated... thank you!!

Well on ICS you can monitor and set your own data limits. Another thing you might want to look into is not using amazon music. I know this sounds dumb but if it's causing you to use up so much data use something else. I stream Pandora all month long and never get throttled. I have the 5GB data plan. Oh and since I work for tmobile you should probably call in about this issue so they can compare your actual usage to the networks to make sure it isn't something they might have to fix. Rarely happens but I have seen this at least a few times. All you can do is increase your data plan. and set your limits through ics. or dial #web# and it will display your usage. or go to tmobile.com under usage you can see it here as well.
How much data are you allowed before you are throttled? You might try downloading your audio directly to your device with a wifi connection. You might also try Google Music, which caches lots of what it streams.
There are many data usage tracking apps, but I prefer LBE security in the market. Give it a try.
Thanks for the responses!
To follow up - yes I have since moved all my Amazon mp3s directly onto my phone, so that's no longer a problem. And prior to the S3, I had the MyTouch 4G, which, while not a spectacular phone, did everything I needed. My amazement with the S3 is that, beyond the first few days of accidentally streaming all my usage away with the Amazon mp3s (which was decidedly dumb of me), my data usage habits haven't changed all that much since my older phone. So I was completely blindsided this month when I already hit my data limit.
I'll need to dig into this a bit more with T-MO, but I was asking in the forum to see if anyone knew of any background app or program, or anything specific to the GS3 that would be using a steady stream of data without my knowledge? Again, thanks in advance for your help!

It's 2GB.
So after crying to TMO for a while, they told me they could up my limit but I would have to renew again and (of course!) increase my monthly bill which is already ghastly! I guess from the lack of many responses or even any other threads with similar experiences, it probably isn't some hidden data sucker upper program that's the problem here... just me being careless with my data usage... =(
Did you by chance use an upgrade for this phone? If your answer is yes, I might have some insight on this.
You should take a look under Data Usage in your settings to see what apps are using the most data. YouTube tends to be one of the bigger ones if you're on it more than once in a while. Or maybe you have an app that's constantly backing up apps.. That takes a lot of data too. Look around and check their usage.
Turn of syncing, Contacts, Picasa, Mail etc, Check them Manually
Install Opera Mini, uses up to 90% Less data than normal browser BUT loads websites slower
Using Youtube? Turn HQ off, but on this screen the quality will kill you.

Tmo has been very understanding when my family or I have made similar mistakes. My son went wild downloading games with monthly subscriptions and Tmo made it all go away. Be nice/professional and ask for a manager or the next in command if you are not able to rectify the issue. Being a 10+ year Tmo guy they treat me well. Learn to work the system and stay cool. Sometimes it takes multiple calls to find the right person that is willing to help.
Watch out for Google+ and instant upload along with dropbox too. All 3 will instant upload unless you change the settings

Also see what apps or accounts are set to auto sync and you could limit background processes as I on my s3 staying logged on eBay for instant notifications, having gmail and other apps set to auto sync and too many background processes was costing me 10 to 12 Mega bytes a day times that by 30 days and that's like 300 to360 megabytes a months wasted you can always check your e-mail and stuff manually unless your a business man and relied on heavy notifications this will help you save a lot of data it keeps me safe because I have the five GB plan too and I've went over a lot until I dug into my settings, hope this helps.

Awesome, thanks everyone for your suggestions! I totally forgot about all the background apps/processes that auto-sync... definitely has helped some. Still isn't 100% better, but like someone else suggested earlier, I was able to talk my way through with a helpful rep. I am also a longtime customer, and they seemed to want to work with me, as opposed to giving me the shaft.

Yes, I did an upgrade through Wal-Mart the week it was launched in the US.
Same thing happened to me. I just restarted a cycle.... But the cycle before this one... Some app used nearly a GB of data around 5 in the morning 3 days into the cycle. By the time I realized this and called TMobile... I was up into the 3.6 range... Couldn't track down the app because I was rom jumping. Anyway, TMobile wasn't much help... I thought for sure they would reset my data since they can see my usage history, but no dice. Bastards! :cyclops:

Ouch!! Yeah, I was hoping to have some sort of definitive answer like you did (1 unknown app hogging all the data at some random time) but I really didn't have anything to pin-point the problem. Were you able to remove/disable that app from doing that?
How about you post what apps you have installed and we can all compare and see if anyone else has the same problem with some of the same apps. Just a thought to maybe help you out. Im just bored shopping with the gf lol.

If you're still hitting your cap in the next few months you might consider a 5GB plan. It'll give you quite a bit more data to work with and you can tether with T-Mobile's blessing.
In order to get the most out of my FireTV/Kodi setup, last week I switched to Comcast cable for their 105mbps service. The first few days, Speedtest.net showed a download speed of around 50mbps on both my computer and my FireTV. Last night, I was experiencing some buffering issues, which had totally disappeared the first few days with Comcast, so I did some more speed tests. I was excited to see speeds of 125mbps on my computer, but totally bummed to see that my FireTV was only reporting around 7 or 8mbps.
Why would there be such drastic performance differences between my computer and my FireTV? I would think some kind of issue arising over the long ethernet cable, but they were reporting consistent speeds between the two when I first got Comcast last weekend.

That's kind of a drastic drop. I'd suspect the Ethernet cable. Longer cords will slow it down a*bit but more than likely it's a problem with the cable. How is it run? Is it possible it got squeezed?
Hardwired is always better but not always feasible. I bought my own modem and router. I actually get the speeds Comcast promises over WiFi with better range. Saving the monthly fee for Comcast equipment doesn't quite even out--it'll take years but my network is much better after switching.
Btw--have you tried the speedtests over WiFi? Sometimes my WiFi speeds beat hardwired but with WiFi you need to deal with interference.
As for cables and buffering, if there's something wrong with the cable it'll cause issues. It's like a race car going over 200 mph and hitting even a small bump. I use to drive my wife nuts with cables running through the house (I'm not much of a craftsman) But even though buffering is a part of xbmc I really don't experience much. And when I do it's usually fixed through power cycling the router. Of course if we're streaming it doesn't always matter how fast our internet is. If the server it comes from is slow, there's nothing you can do to speed it up.
***when I asked you to test WiFi speeds I assume you have dual band. 2.4ghz is craps imo. Another reason to buy your own router. In my area you only get 5ghz if you rent more equipment from Comcast.
Thanks for the response.

I agree that it sounds like a cable issue, but would that explain why we were getting mediocre but consistent speeds between the computer and Fire TV, and now the computer speeds are blazing and the Fire TV is limping along? I did the measurements when no activity was going on, so I don't think the initial 50mbps tests were because the computer and Fire TV were evenly splitting the signal. And I haven't touched the cable since it was installed, so I don't know how it could have gotten squeezed between last weekend and now.

I haven't yet. One thing I did try was using different speed test websites. I wound up getting totally different figures (shown in mbps):
• Speedtest.net: 125
• att.com/speedtest: 27.16
• speedof.me: 40.62
• cnet.com/internet-speed-test: 31.39
• bandwidthplace.com: 37.52
• myverizon.com: 20.79
• timewarnercable.com: 122.58
Plus many more that totally fluctuated. Oddly, all of the upload speeds were consistent at around 12mbps.
Good suggestion to power cycle the router. I'll try that this evening and report back.

Speed tests can be effected by many factors. I find speed test.net to be most accurate. When it comes to networks, it can be a lot more complicated than it seems but most of the*issues I've spent hours or days agonizing over could've been solved by something as simple as a new cable. One time my speed test were fast but video kept buffering. I spent weeks troubleshooting. 2 techs came to my house. The 2nd was smart enough to check the cable outside my house. I live near the ocean and it got corroded. So it would register as fast but it was prone to frequent issues. That's why I always look for the simplest solution.
Also, I don't get too hung up on speedtests anymore. To this day my living room aftv still tests faster on 5ghz than wired but I keep it wired.
One wall away my other aftv is WiFi testing at around 100 mbps while the wired one tests at around 80 to 85. Oh and forgot to mention WiFi antennas aren't all the same either. My Mac is about 30 feet farther away from the router than WiFi aftv and Mac Always tests over 130 mbps.
I could go on but just so you don't get too hung up on figuring this out--keep the troubleshooting basic to start. Then if it's still giving you problems look deeper into it. Good luck!
After another frustrating night of aftv buffering, I sent my wife to bed and started yanking on cables and running speed tests. The simple act of turning off my PS3 and unplugging and plugging ethernet cables seemed to get me up from 8mbps to 25mbps. Swapping out a brand new Monoprice Cat6 cable for a Cat5e cable that Comcast had left behind bumped me up to around 30mbps. Still not the 50mbps I was experiencing when I first switched to Comcast, but better.
Then something KLit75 mentioned about testing my WiFi speed popped into my head, so I gave that a whirl. Speedtest reported 80mbps! I tripled my speed by going to WiFi! :good:

So why don't you go WiFi? I'm kinda old school, and I learned to always go hardwired whenever possible. But I think in this instance, if the speedtest numbers tell the real story here, I'd be way better off going with the WiFi, no?
I replayed the show we were watching that kept buffering on us earlier in the evening (an episode of Town of the Living Dead), and this time it played smooth as silk. Even the gray progress bar scooted happily along, picking up more and more space ahead of the playhead as the show progressed. I'm psyched!
I do recall during the rooting process that being on WiFi held some danger of Amazon updating my software on me, but since I completed the rooting process successfully and, if I remember correctly, in the process turned off the ability for Amazon to do auto updates in the process, I'm not in any danger of losing my root via an auto-update from Amazon, am I?
You mean "root"? You're good. I believe you're thinking of the root guide. It's easier to get to the registration page with ethernet. But once you're rooted there is absolutely no danger of losing root via WiFi (at last no more so than with Ethernet.)
As for why I don't go WiFi when speed tests are faster...
1. 80mbps, for what I stream is more than fast enough.
2. It's like I mentioned earlier, no interference, provided your cable is in good health.
3. Speed tests aren't always the best way to measure quality.
***I hardwire when I can. That no longer extends to running a long cable through my house. I certainly could but why would I ? I stream fine over WiFi.
But like I said, just because it registers as faster on a speed testdoesn't meaner it's stronger in terms of not getting weakened by external factors.
Before I landed on hardwiring, I made sure I tested 3 different cables. The results actually were different and I just went with the cable that had the fastest speed test result. My rule of thumb--if it's within a few feet of my router I hardwired. And there is one weak spot in my house (my son's room) so I bought him a plugin power line adapter. He only needs it for gaming.

Right after I posted, I went and checked my speed one more time before hitting the hay. For whatever reason, it was down from 80 to 30mbps, so I went to bed in a bad mood. But this morning I was getting 70mbps, so... I'll try not to let the speed tests drive me crazy. As long as I can get away from the frequent buffering of streaming content, I'll be happy.
Many thanks, KLit75, for your input on this. I really appreciate you takin' the time.

It's not a problem. If you're experiencing buffering it might be time to consider some advanced settings and unfortunately I'm not the one to talk to. I don't typically have buffering issues but it appears I'm more of the exception there.
There was actually a good thread very recently (last few days) I think it was title adjusting zero cache? Anyway it turns out lots of people set it to zero and that's not good for aftv. Read the entire thread then you might want to go to the org for more specifics.
I think I don't have buffering because I typically don't stream hd movie sources, especially over WiFi. Most of my online sources are tv shows from genesis. The others I almost alwaysuse local files.

It's this one. But like I said you might want to read then check related topics at the org. I don't pretend to know much about it but it seems there's not one catch all number to set. It's specific to your network.
In maybe a related topic, adbFire 1.16 was just released and I'm not certain but think the dev*made it simpler to change this/modify cache. If it's what I think it is it MIGHT make it a whole lot easier to play around/test different settings. But as always, do your research. I'm trying to help but it's not something I have experience with. I've been around long enough to understand this MAY be something that'd benefit you.

Yes, I checked out adbFire 1.16 last night. I was having trouble getting the main window on 1.15 to display at all, so I was using 1.14, which was a little sketchy as well. (I chalk it up to an aging Mac.) But 1.16 seems to be much improved.

I'm a Mac user myself. Is Mac on WiFi? If so I found toggling from 2ghz to 5 helps with your adbfire problem. Btw--my Mac is white unibody 2010. But I quadrupled the ram from 2 to 8gb and this machine runs Yosemite better than some newer macs I've seen (faster anyway) About an 80 dollar investment paid off big time! Otherwise I would've been looking at at least a grand to buy a new one. Just something to consider and don't go by what apple says! According to them my Mac only supports 4 GB but testers have run 16 GB with great results. Mine has been running 8 for the better part of a year. If you go that route I'd reccomend a clean install from USB to really see the results.

My mac is actually hardwired to the router. I'm realizing this beast is probably about a decade old now! I never used to get more than three years out of a computer. I pretty much maxed out the RAM when I bought it, so I think it's actually time for a new computer. But I will also say that I've got one of the brand new, black trashcan-looking Power Macs at work, and it's a dog. Crashes all the freakin' time. I wish I was still using my silver tower, so new isn't always better.
