Playing files larger than 2gb? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So title explains it pretty well. I'm in the process of encoding all my Blu-Rays into my phone and my encodes are coming in just under 4gb so I'm okay there with the Fat32 limit but the media player wont play any of my files that are over 2gb. I just split them in half for now as a workaround but I was wondering if there's a way to modify the existing media player or perhaps a free market one that will work?

Unfortunately, Android apps cannot access files over 2GB in size. So you'll have to keep splitting them up. Or use a lower bitrate I've found that 2Mbps with two passes is plenty for a nice, crisp picture.

putting films on xda2s

hi what is the best encoder and player to put on the xda2s ??? thanks in advance
Encode in WMV using windows media encoder and play in windows media player.
Google encoding wmv for ppc and you'll find a guide on the best configuration for file size to quality.
I found BetaPlayer to be very good as a player: http://betaplayer.corecodec.org/
I used PocketDivxEncoder to make files small enough to fit on my 1GB SD card: http://divx.ppccool.com/
thanks for the tips i will give them a go cheers
Good program
Hi,
I like using DVD2PPC, it plugs into windows media player and is very easy to use. You just do three clicks and sit back and it does all the rest. Really cool stuff, I've ripped 25 movies so far with it and I put two movies at a time on my 1 GIG sd card to watch. Cheers.
Shane
how to compress
can some one help me how to compress movies to fit 1 GB card
How many movies can be put on on 1 GB card !!
i use wmv convertor(for wmv files) and pocket divx encoder (for all other files).
the hindi/indian movies take around 250-320 MB, bcoz of their length.
Thanks
Well where can i find those Software
also can i ripp in the whole movie and how long does it take to rip in a movie of about 90 mins
DVD2ppc
Hey guys
I uploaded the full version of DVD2PPC at the ftp site under the uploads folder. Enjoy! Cheers.
Shane
i'm converting avi files...
90 mins of video takes around 6-10 mins.. depending in the quality and computer speed.
Hey you might wanna try to use windows movie maker which comes as standard on any win xp system, it already has a default setting to change full size movies down to the right size for the BA. it seems a bit slow though, apart from that it works excellently!!

thats what i use, and i find it to be the best program to use for putting movies on xda2s. i can get 2movies on 256mb card, i reckon 8movies on 1gb.
Betaplayer seems to work the best... I've tried the default media player (garbage) and VLC. If I try to play a high bitrate movie over 802.11b it will have buffering issues. The trick is that the file needs to no larger than 320x240 otherwise it will use precious processing cycles to resize the video.
It's kind of weird though... If I watch my web server it uploads around 100 kilobytes/sec normally and when the buffer underruns and it's actually trying to refill the buffer it goes around 300 kilobytes/sec. I've always wondered why it can't deal with keeping the buffer full...? Or is it too busy rendering the video?
@shane:
did it get removed? i looked at the uploads folder on the ftp site and it aint there.

Best Video Settings - Space Not Big Issue

If space isn't a major issue (I mean I'd like to reduce the video size, but I have a 2gig card that I plan to use only for video so it's not super important to get the vids as small as possible) - what are the best encoding settings for 3gp video with respect to quality playback on the dash.
Is there a way to encode something larger so that it could be played relatively decently on a laptop but still work okay on the phone too? There might be occasion where I'm on the road with a work laptop and would prefer to simply copy the movie over and watch it on the larger laptop screen as opposed to directly on the phone.
I've done some searching around and did some encoding with DVDFAB but I was using a custom profile someone whipped up for a dpod and while the playback is acceptable for on the phone, there is some pixelation and since the encoding was specifically for the phone, I suspect playback on a larger laptop screen would be terrible.
Thanks for the help!

A good .avi to .mp4 converter?

I'm looking for a good converter which converts .avi to .mp4. I was using this one for my Touch Diamond 2 but I think the bitrate and stuff could be higher now when I got a Desire with better specs.
I used this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112
I use Format Factory, it does a pretty good job and is free.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Look at Xilisoft software. Not free but good for pretty much any video/audio convrrsion.
Sent from my Desire using XDA App
I have compared different converters and I recommend Convert-tune to download and convert video and audio easily.
It converts music and movies, and also burn files on CDs. The converter is
easy to install and use.
when using Xilisoft program i had many audio/video , synchronization problems ...

Stick with that converter. It's awesome and there is no point in increasing the bitrate because the screen resolution and dimensions are the same. Increasing the bitrate will not show higher quality pictures.
AVS Video converter 6 is hands down the best converter i have used. Its not free, but its a good investment because it pretty much converts anything you throw at it. Even .mkv.
I use Handbrake on the Mac, think there is a PC version as well, works great.
+1 for Handbrake
You can pretty much just use the iPhone preset. You might need a laptop with some horsepower but it's worth using the h264 codec to reduce file size

You could just use RockPlayerBase to play the AVI instead of waiting for it to encode?
Tried using handbrake but neither Rock or the native player will recognise the m4v or mp4 file - any suggestions?

Why would you wanna use RockPlayer to watch .mp4? Just don't encode the videos.. leave them .avi or whatever, RockPlayer will play it. If you have .mp4 from beginning just use the inbuilt player.
Because I'm trying to save space and cram as many in to the memory card as I can - it's for a 6 week holiday so I want to take as much as I can. 700MB / file is un-necessarily large for a phone?
Well, I got a 32GB SD card right now and that's alooooot of movies.. I don't know what you got but converting to mp4 isn't saving so much space.
I thought a 700MB filecould be halved quite easily without any noticeable loss in quality, perhaps not? I want to take about 30 files with us, so a 16GB card or two won't be enough. We'd need 20 - 25GB of micro SD storage! With that much to carry around for an extended holiday, any saving of space would be substantial. The native player does seem to play the .avi files the files are currently stored in, however it seems a waste to keep them in their current size for such a small screen?

with this phone i even forgot the last time i converted/encoded anything... MX Video Player is simply the best and will play anything you throw at it up to 720p. 1080p plays smoothly as well but not always. oh, and multi-subtitles/multi-audio tracks are supported as wel. only issue i found with it is it won't display embedded bitmap "vob" subtitles (other subtitles, both mixed in and external play just fine)
as far as video conversion, i take the geeky approach. AviSynth + x264 + neroAacEnc. with proper settings you will get the best results, ever... seriously. if you're scarred of command line, use the MeGUI or Handbrake frontends. same encoders, different approach.
i've spent many years experimenting with various video encoders/compressors and from my experience i've concluded that regardless of what you're trying to accomplish, h264/aac codec combo will give you the best quality than any other codec out there. oh, and make sure to use mkv container. it's the most flexible of popular container formats.
lastly, if you just want an easy tool, use Sorenson Squeeze. very flexible, easy to use, has gpu acceleration, and gives quite impressive results. only downside is its hella expensive, that is if you're trying to stay legal

Very true, our device will typically play most formats stock without a complaint. I mostly set this thread in motion for our fellow xda'ers who were having trouble finding options to overcome a single file size limitation without splitting. Your info was spot on my man.. well said!

That is a very simple, no options (other than picking the phone model) encoder. I don't know off hand that phone in its list has similar resolution with our phone (800x480 I think) but it works without a fuss. It doesn't do batch, only one at a time. I don't know if it's 2 pass or not. My preference is handbrake. If you use something like that, check in the settings that CABAC is off. That is a feature that will make smaller files but it will need more cpu to decode during playback. Off setting has larger file sizes but it's less cpu intensive during playback. I haven't made a comparison between on and off but I don't think off makes the file really huge. If you're doing DVD resolution encodes, dual pass encoding with video bitrate of 2000 is sufficient with no noticeable difference in artifacting from 2500.
Another suggestion is with the video the phone camcorder makes. It's bigger than it needs to be file size wise. Run it through handbrake with default settings, only changing CABAC to off, and perspective (screen) to none. That makes a 1080 2 gig 20 minute video down to about 300mb and I don't see the difference in video quality.

Thanks for this heads up, but I have a question. I was converting a DVD to test this one out, and it seems to work flawlessly so far, but I did notice if I choose to convert to Android 800x480 with the defaults everywhere else, I wind up with files around 1.25GB. Is there a particular set of settings I can use to shrink that size or a way to take the mp4 files and reduce their size? I'm used to mp4s being ~300 - 500MB, so just wondering if there is a way to set it up I'm not seeing.
I use Hand brake without issue on my epic touch. Just throwing out another program for everyone to try.

Welcome! Yeah you can change a few things, the bit rate and format play a lot in the over all file size. Mp4 will compress more as apposed to avi. The ps3 setting is a useful one for that. You can click on each of the presets setting and get an overview of the container/codec/bit rate/frame rate that are being used to give you an idea.

Thanks again. I found in the dialog box that allows me to rename the mp4 I can also limit the maximum size of the file. It automagically changes the bitrate that way, and I have much more manageable files now.

Best ffmpeg video parameters for Note 2

Hi guys
I've quite a lot of mkv videos, and I'd like to convert them into avi I can watch on my N2, possibly reducing their size a little bit, but I'm not sure how far I can go without deteriorating the quality of said video. So, here's the question: has anybody figured out yet the best ffmpeg parameters to convert a video for the Note 2 without quality loss? Or, as an alternative, any suggestion on a good video converter with proper settings for the Note 2?
Thanks a lot
You don't need to convert anything on Note2 it has one of the best hw decoders available.
If you have a file that can't be played by native video player just install BSPlayer or MxPlayer.
But the problem is with the files size, not the player.
How much we can shrink mkv's without quality loss, and what software use for that. That's the question I think.
Am I right?

The conversion has a double porpuse :
1) Make the files easier to read for the Note 2 : I tried to play a couple of .mkv files with VLC and a 4-5 of times each, for 2-3 seconds, the image was quite bad ( huge pixels in some random position of the screen), while I had no such a problem playing them on a computer
2) Make video files smaller : I know that most people has a 64GB microSD that partially solves the problem, but I travel quite a lot, and while on the train I really like watching movies. If each movie is 2-3 GB, I can't bring many with me Plus, I'm quite sure that a 720p movie is an overkill on the Note 2 : you only need to have as many pixels per frame as the Note 2 screen has. Every detail over that is just a waste of precious microSD space
So, back IT ... has anybody found the perfect conversion parameters?
+ MxPlayer
Don't use the ffmpeg after got the aneesoft, it works fine for me on almost videos conversion.

mmm... Why are you suggesting against ffmpeg? I'm kind of a command line lover, and ffmpeg has been for me the fastest converter I've tested so far ... Plus, a lot of other converters ( just like HandBrake, the one suggested the post above this one ) uses it
PS: I'll try handbrake , thanks
PPS: On handbrake, "Android High" is the preset to use to get the best results for Note 2?
I'm using "Any Video Converter" to convert my mkv's, but you don't have to.
The settings I usually use are:
Video Codec: x264
Bitrate: 1000 (You can play a bit with this one to greatly reduce the size but be careful because you'll get pixelated video)
Video Framerate (you've got to be careful here, keep original framerate to avoid frame stutter.)
Frame size: 1280x720
Audio bitrate: 128
Sample rate: 44100
Here are some comparisons:
Original mkv:
size - 331 MB
Converted to mp4:
Bitrate: 2500
size - 461 MB
Bitrate: 1000
Size - 198 MB
Bitrate: 256
Size - 66.9MB

Using the preset for a device with a different screen size and resolution wouldn't mess up the video quality?
Has anyone tried a true 720p60 (with high-motion) video playing back on the Note 2? I'm curious if this can be handled. Likewise with 1080i playing back with high-motion intact as opposed to being deinterlaced with some method that throws away half the temporal resolution. Any info would be appreciated.
For that matter, has anyone tried a straight-up Blu-ray rip of any kind (1080p24 or otherwise) that has not been reencoded but maybe just remuxed to MKV or similar?

Why did you reencode to a much larger file-size here?
I have a GN-7100 international GN2. Running JB 4.1.1 I could copy .mkv files from my PC to the GN2 SD card and play them with MX Player Pro. There would be a warning that .mkv was not compatible and the device might not play them, but the files always copied and played. Yesterday I upgraded to JB 4.1.2 and now the same warning comes up when I try to copy and when I tell it to proceed it starts to copy and then refuses to continue. When I look at the GN2 video directories on my PC the folder are there but the contents show as empty and the .mkv files are not visible. Using the GN2 file explorer the contents are visible and MX Player Pro plays the files just fine.
Other forums say the files need to be converted, using proprietary and expensive video converters, from .mkv to mp4, because the GN2 will not recognise .mkv. My experience is that the device will play them once they are copied to it. Today I removed the SD card from the device, copied the .mkv files to it from the PC, reinserted the card in the phone and the files are seen and played from the SD card using MX Player Pro.
So my question is: does anyone know how to get .mkv files to copy from a PC to the GN2 with the SD card installed and for the files to be seen on the PC? I guess having to remove the SD card to copy files to it is cheaper and less pain than having to convert them first, but it would be nice to be able to do it without any hassle.

No, I removed KIES in case it was part of the problem. There must be something in the Samsung usb drivers or JB 4.1.2 that prevents the PC from seeing the files. It occurs to me that downloading directly to the phone may solve the problem, but it would be good to be able to just copy and paste without removing the SD card from the phone.
