Hi guys
I've quite a lot of mkv videos, and I'd like to convert them into avi I can watch on my N2, possibly reducing their size a little bit, but I'm not sure how far I can go without deteriorating the quality of said video. So, here's the question: has anybody figured out yet the best ffmpeg parameters to convert a video for the Note 2 without quality loss? Or, as an alternative, any suggestion on a good video converter with proper settings for the Note 2?
Thanks a lot
You don't need to convert anything on Note2 it has one of the best hw decoders available.
If you have a file that can't be played by native video player just install BSPlayer or MxPlayer.
But the problem is with the files size, not the player.
How much we can shrink mkv's without quality loss, and what software use for that. That's the question I think.
Am I right?

The conversion has a double porpuse :
1) Make the files easier to read for the Note 2 : I tried to play a couple of .mkv files with VLC and a 4-5 of times each, for 2-3 seconds, the image was quite bad ( huge pixels in some random position of the screen), while I had no such a problem playing them on a computer
2) Make video files smaller : I know that most people has a 64GB microSD that partially solves the problem, but I travel quite a lot, and while on the train I really like watching movies. If each movie is 2-3 GB, I can't bring many with me Plus, I'm quite sure that a 720p movie is an overkill on the Note 2 : you only need to have as many pixels per frame as the Note 2 screen has. Every detail over that is just a waste of precious microSD space
So, back IT ... has anybody found the perfect conversion parameters?

Don't use the ffmpeg after got the aneesoft, it works fine for me on almost videos conversion.

I use handbrake. It's free and has presets and works very well under 64bit.

mmm... Why are you suggesting against ffmpeg? I'm kind of a command line lover, and ffmpeg has been for me the fastest converter I've tested so far ... Plus, a lot of other converters ( just like HandBrake, the one suggested the post above this one ) uses it
PS: I'll try handbrake , thanks
PPS: On handbrake, "Android High" is the preset to use to get the best results for Note 2?
I'm using "Any Video Converter" to convert my mkv's, but you don't have to.
The settings I usually use are:
Video Codec: x264
Bitrate: 1000 (You can play a bit with this one to greatly reduce the size but be careful because you'll get pixelated video)
Video Framerate (you've got to be careful here, keep original framerate to avoid frame stutter.)
Frame size: 1280x720
Audio bitrate: 128
Sample rate: 44100
Here are some comparisons:
Original mkv:
size - 331 MB
Converted to mp4:
Bitrate: 2500
size - 461 MB
Bitrate: 1000
Size - 198 MB
Bitrate: 256
Size - 66.9MB

Thanks, I'll try this one out too. I've played a bit with the other suggested converter, HandBrake, but it has so many option that a video/audio noob like me feels completly lost. It would be great if it had a preset just for the Note 2, but I guess that's too much to ask
Anyway, I'll see how AVC works. Thanks for your suggestion !

Using the preset for a device with a different screen size and resolution wouldn't mess up the video quality?
Has anyone tried a true 720p60 (with high-motion) video playing back on the Note 2? I'm curious if this can be handled. Likewise with 1080i playing back with high-motion intact as opposed to being deinterlaced with some method that throws away half the temporal resolution. Any info would be appreciated.
For that matter, has anyone tried a straight-up Blu-ray rip of any kind (1080p24 or otherwise) that has not been reencoded but maybe just remuxed to MKV or similar?

Why did you reencode to a much larger file-size here?
I have a GN-7100 international GN2. Running JB 4.1.1 I could copy .mkv files from my PC to the GN2 SD card and play them with MX Player Pro. There would be a warning that .mkv was not compatible and the device might not play them, but the files always copied and played. Yesterday I upgraded to JB 4.1.2 and now the same warning comes up when I try to copy and when I tell it to proceed it starts to copy and then refuses to continue. When I look at the GN2 video directories on my PC the folder are there but the contents show as empty and the .mkv files are not visible. Using the GN2 file explorer the contents are visible and MX Player Pro plays the files just fine.
Other forums say the files need to be converted, using proprietary and expensive video converters, from .mkv to mp4, because the GN2 will not recognise .mkv. My experience is that the device will play them once they are copied to it. Today I removed the SD card from the device, copied the .mkv files to it from the PC, reinserted the card in the phone and the files are seen and played from the SD card using MX Player Pro.
So my question is: does anyone know how to get .mkv files to copy from a PC to the GN2 with the SD card installed and for the files to be seen on the PC? I guess having to remove the SD card to copy files to it is cheaper and less pain than having to convert them first, but it would be nice to be able to do it without any hassle.

Are you transferring through KIES? If yes then try to transfer just by copying and pasting in the memory card folder directly.

No, I removed KIES in case it was part of the problem. There must be something in the Samsung usb drivers or JB 4.1.2 that prevents the PC from seeing the files. It occurs to me that downloading directly to the phone may solve the problem, but it would be good to be able to just copy and paste without removing the SD card from the phone.

Didn't have a problem with it myself with vista x64.
I already had the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime library installed and just used the 32bit version of mediacoder and didn't bother with the 64bit addons. Not having experianced the problem you have, I'm not really in a position to offer much more help than that. Sorry
If you keep having trouble with mediacoder, you could try SUPER. I used to use it, but found its UI a bit of a mess.

I use Visualhub on OSX. It will specifically do H.264 MP4 videos made for iPhone and iPod Touch but you can also specifically set the resolution and the bitrate so you can specifically set for the TP2 screen. I get faster and higher quality video at the iPhone resolution especially since high bitrates choke on the TP2. Couple that with Coreplayer and it's a done deal.

Have you picked your source at the top of the screen?
but DVDFab is a shareware so here's a freeware for you

more tools through google
With core player go menu/tools/preferences/select page/video
And put video out onto qtv display. Put video quality on high. Smooth zoom on.
Then try your mp4.
I find it best to convert videos to 320 x 194 or 320 x 176
The best video quality I have downloaded. (Trailers) .m4v but I can’t find any program that converts to that format
I've used Total Video Converter which has plenty of options and seems to work fine for me.

Visual hub (http://www.techspansion.com/) has been discontinued (sadly enough), but I use it as well. If you can get a copy somewhere, its really useful and piss easy to use. As an alternative i can also recommend Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/). Its not as easy to use as Visual Hub, but it also produces great results which work very well with Core Player.
After a very frustrating week of trying to get feature length movies on my desire I have all but given up hope. I am able to convert and copy some movies and get them to run without the dreaded "This video cannot play" error message. Most that do play still play with out of sync sound, if they play at all. Occasionally, one plays correctly but I believe this is more an accident then a cure. I have tried several converters and every conceivable setting. I have come to the conclusion that this is a problem with the phone and most probably with the implementation of the operating system. I have an unbranded Desire that was purchased from an authorized dealer in Hong Kong. I have not attempted to root the phone or modify it in any way.
If anyone has had success at consistently putting feature length movies on their desire please post your methods. I am at the point where I believe this needs to be fixed with and update from HTC. I can only assume that the same problem exits on the Nexus One.
What types of files are you converting them into?
I myself have only put 2 episodes onto the device because most of mine are avi
and i cant be bothered to convert them, but the 2 iv tried are both .wmv and work fine.

I have tried several converters designed for Nexus One or Desire. They all seem to want to convert to mpeg4. Some of the converters show that they are using an h264 codec. I have tested the converted files on my pc using Media Player Classic then if they run I copy and paste to the phone directory. A few actually work as planned. Most do not. I am converting avi, xvid and divix files that I have downloaded. They work fine on my Windows 7 computer using just about any video player (I have several).
The fact that an occasional feature film converts and works suggests to me that the HTC operating system is buggy. I would love to be proven wrong on this.
Here is a follow-up to my efforts. I actually purchased three converters and also tried some free ones. The converter called Any video converter Professional seems to have the best success rate. I have been using the setup on most of these with profiles for the Nexus One because the Desire is identical (as far as I know) in the video sense. Most of these converters have not yet offered updates to include a profile labeled Desire (but a few have and they are the worst).
I have spent many hours trying to get this to work consistently because I travel a lot and intended to use the phone for videos. I have been able to get as many as two working feature films onto my 16gb Kingston sd card, but adding even one more causes corruption of the entire card. That spells operating system problems to me. I also tried this with the original 4gb sd card with the exact same results. Anyone with consistent success at this please post your methods.
I just put movie 2012 on my phone with sound.. successfully.... MP4 format works great.. I use DVDFAB works great.. i have used it for many years burning movies, and has always worked great for iphone,wm phone and BB now Desire as well.. check it out.. you get a 30day trial then have to buy get lifetime upgrades..
www.dvdfab.com
I use HandBrake, a freeware, to convert my DVDs and video files, it works great
but remember to set the Video Codec to H.264(x264), an opensource codec which works great on Android
also the Target Size should be less than 2GB as Android doesn't play file bigger than 2GB
http://handbrake.fr/
Good luck!
Putting one feature length film on the sd card often works. It is the act of adding more than one (and always more than two) that causes the problems. When I add the second or third movie I get videos that won't play or corruption of the entire card. I have tried putting them in the same folder and also tried putting them in the root of the card. I started thinking that it was a size limit in the operating system? So to nail this, we would need to successfully put three or more feature length films on the sd card so that they work. I have a 16gb card installed so this is not a memory problem.
ok, I placed two movies on my Desire, Star Trek and Avatar, using resolution 640x???
and they worked. So I think you should give Handbrake a try...
but I don't know why the files are corrupting your card, is your card faulty? I'm just guessing
After rather exhaustive experimentation I found the solution to this problem. It has to do with the bps rate. Most conversions programs default to 1200 or 1500bps for their conversion. I know cause I tried most of them. When I set the bps rate to 768 using Any Video Converter Pro the problem is solved. Odd thing is that the phone shows the resulting rate at 888bps for every video I convert at 768bps. No matter, it works. I did try Handbrake but found it to be way too slow. I am using an i7 processor with Windows 7 and I want to be able to use all the available threads for fast conversion. Any Video Converter Pro has an option for that and it works using all 8 threads. This also seems to resolve the video/sound sync problem that I was experiencing with some conversions. Must be a limit with the Android operating system.

Great but the iphone is 320 x 480 and the desire is 480 X 800 ... do you see what I'm getting at?
I'm gonna wait for a good program with a Desire/Nexus1 optimised preset
You may give the Miro Video Converter a try too.. It has a Nexus One preset which does the trick nicely.
http://www.mirovideoconverter.com/
Earlier I had this issue with the sound being of low quality (too low a bitrate), but the latest version seems to have fixed this.
I haven't tried feature length but I use handbrake to convert tv eps - edited the iphone profile so that width is set to 800 and height is blank to keep files to the right resolution for the screen (although check your source files, if they are less than 800px width there's no point upscaling them here). I usually then set the target size to 350mb for a tv episode. This gives me decent quality and works well.
For playback I'm using mvideoplayer it's great

All my video is encoded at 320x480 using Handbrakes iPhone profile so that it can be used on my wifes iPod Touch as well as my Desire. Despite the fact that it doesn't use the extra resolution of the Desire, it looks perfectly fine on a small screen using Meridian for playback.

Best thing to use in my experience is winavi to 3gp/mp4 convertor. It converts in no time at all, i tend to convert to 3gp as they take up the least amount of space but quality of playback/sound is still excellent.
I use the aplayer app to play the 3gp file.

I downloaded the Miro Video Converter from their site today. I found no Desire setting only Nexus One. I converted one xvid video it resulted in the wrong aspect and gave the dreaded "This Video cannot play" message. Bps rate was also too high and there is no way to change settings on that player. If there is a newer version I cannot find it on their site: http://www.mirovideoconverter.com/
Any Video Player Pro with a bps setting at 768 and set for Nexus One is still the only converter I find consistently working.
Am I the only one who uses the app yxflash? I just copy the AVI files from my computer to my phone, no converting or anything, and it works like a charm.

I'm looking for a good converter which converts .avi to .mp4. I was using this one for my Touch Diamond 2 but I think the bitrate and stuff could be higher now when I got a Desire with better specs.

Stick with that converter. It's awesome and there is no point in increasing the bitrate because the screen resolution and dimensions are the same. Increasing the bitrate will not show higher quality pictures.
AVS Video converter 6 is hands down the best converter i have used. Its not free, but its a good investment because it pretty much converts anything you throw at it. Even .mkv.
I use Handbrake on the Mac, think there is a PC version as well, works great.
+1 for Handbrake
You can pretty much just use the iPhone preset. You might need a laptop with some horsepower but it's worth using the h264 codec to reduce file size

Why would you wanna use RockPlayer to watch .mp4? Just don't encode the videos.. leave them .avi or whatever, RockPlayer will play it. If you have .mp4 from beginning just use the inbuilt player.
Because I'm trying to save space and cram as many in to the memory card as I can - it's for a 6 week holiday so I want to take as much as I can. 700MB / file is un-necessarily large for a phone?
Well, I got a 32GB SD card right now and that's alooooot of movies.. I don't know what you got but converting to mp4 isn't saving so much space.
I thought a 700MB filecould be halved quite easily without any noticeable loss in quality, perhaps not? I want to take about 30 files with us, so a 16GB card or two won't be enough. We'd need 20 - 25GB of micro SD storage! With that much to carry around for an extended holiday, any saving of space would be substantial. The native player does seem to play the .avi files the files are currently stored in, however it seems a waste to keep them in their current size for such a small screen?

Now the filesystem on the sd card is fat32 and i know there's some kind of limitation. What would you guys do? Maybe I can reformat the microsd card to another system like NTSF or EXFAT?

yes, ntsf is going to be your best bet for gettin 4gb+ files on it, saw this same quandary over on the ASUS transformer prime forums. i heard exfat wasnt working, but that may just be on the tablet, idk. just passing along the knowledge!
You could always try formatting the card as either NTFS or exFAT, either one supports file sizes of 4gb+
Barring that, you might be able to make use of a DLNA app (AllShare maybe) to stream it over your network to your phone

Now the filesystem on the sd card is fat32 and i know there's some kind of limitation. What would you guys do? Maybe I can reformat the microsd card to another system like NTSF or EXFAT?
Thanks Guys

NTFS doesn't work, our device only recognizes fat32. The file size limit is approx 4.1 gb for the E4GT so I just take the .mkv file and reconvert it if it exceeds. Use AVS Video Converter or Freemake Video Converter. You won't notice the difference if you compress the file a little unless your bit rate is too low. Converting to .avi/divx/mp4 while keeping the bit rate around 3000kbps and min frame rate @23fps still looks amazing on our device, and most of the time you're still retaining a 720p image(depending on the tweeks). Hope this helps!
Doesn't seem to work. Over 2.5 GB'ish video files won't be able to play completely through. It will freeze after about the 10 minute mark or so into the video.

On stock video player? File possibly corrupt, did you convert the file yourself? I've had no problems playing avi/divx/mkv/mpeg...

On stock player, mx video player, and moboplayer. File is not corrupt as it will play through my WDTV media player. I have gotten files that are 2.2 GB to play all the way through but not those over 2.5 GB.

I'm looking to watch the movies the HDTV not the phone.
Do you think converting the files will have the same quality when watching on the HDTV?

Only if your resolution closely matches that of your tv. Too small of a res will make your set expand the picture.

Have you tried different cables? (when transferring from computer to phone) The one shipped with our device should realistically be used for charging only, not good for data transfer.

I personally use multiavchd for everything blu-ray. its the best software i have used for hd content. i have 8 tb of blu-ray movies, so i have had experience. You can set file limit for when to split. I would set limit at 4.0 gigs so that once it hits it splits the file, then i can burn to 2 regular dvds instead of a dvd9.
I need help with to things:, hope someone can help me..
1. Video Player..
Please let me know the best video player for One X.
I tried Mobo Player and QQ Player.. these two souldnt play few .mkv movies and found the picture and sound mismatch and very sluggish frame rates..
Searched in market for codecs installed Mobo Player codecs but it is of no use..
I purchased One X mainly to watch movies.. but now Im not able to play most of the high definition movies..
2. When I tried to copy a HD movie of 4.5 GB it gives insufficient memory error.. even though there 24GB of free space..
Im worried if the memory on my phone is corrupted.. please help..
I would go for DOA on your suggestions.. Thanks in advance.

You need to try them all and find the one that works best for your particular Matroska files. .MKV is just a container like .AVI and it can have anything inside.
Try MX Player and BS Player. I use MX Player but I transcode to h.264 in .m4v containers so it works great for me.

That is normal. There is nothing wrong with your phone. The storage in the One X is formatted in FAT32 which has a 4GB limit for files. You can't just format it from your computer either. You either need to stream your videos over the network or transcode them to be under 4GB. Nobody has managed or tried to change the filesystem for the storage partition so 4GB per file is the maximum for now.
