Hi Goodtilltomorrow,
Would like to help, but what is the question?
If you are charging via the USB connection then it will ask you what type of connection you want (whilst also charging).
My solution for charging only, is to select Disk Drive and then to 'safely remove device' using the icon in the system tray.
That way the device is not using any additional power (above normal standby) but is charging from the USB port.
If it's asking about activesync or Disk Drive via a mains power source then I am as confused as you.
Hope this helps.
oh sorry.
i meant to ask, why is it asking where im charging from everytime i connect it to charge from the wall?
im using the stock charger and it never use to ask me where i wanted to use (Activesync or Disk Drive) when i just charged my phone from the wall.
how can i get rid of it doing that?
Does it charge at all? Mine does the same, but doesn't charge at all when the phone is on.
I can only charge it with the ac charger when it is turned of, or turned on using the usb on my laptop...

yeah my charges. its charges even with the phone on.
i wonder why it does that!
every so often my charger does the same.. some pins must be pressed somewhere in the usb input. I haven't seen it negatively effect the phone in any way though.

if you turn off the tab and then plug it in, does the battery screen come on and does the device charge?

My guess - faulty resistors in the charger or one of the wires in the cable is dead.
The Tab expects to see USB D+ and D- shorted together and floating at 1.2 volts, set by a resistor divider in the charger.
Does the cable work fine for USB data transfer?
I think the user has possibly used the wrong wording. If he's seeing the MTP mode come on that means that he's just got it plugged into a USB port on a machine whilst the tablet is on (whilst using the "charger" cable).
Simple answer if that's the case. The tab doesn't charge that way as there isn't enough power coming through the port to keep the tab on and charge. If you however switch off the tab, you should find it charges from the USB port
If not, let us know.
Actually the tab is going into MTP mode while plugged into the outlet, using the supplied Samsung power adapter and supplied 30 pin cable.
I think i need to call Samsung for replacement... although after really thinking about what I just typed I think might be simpler to just buy a new cable online.
Or is it the actual power adapter that's faulty....
Well that is quite odd then. Does the tab charge if you switch it off and then plug it into the outlet / pc?

No, his wording was explicit enough to indicate that the tab is falsely detecting the factory charger as a USB host. This will happen with iPad/iPod/iPhone chargers, and would happen with the factory charger if the cable were faulty (D+ or D- open) or if the charger were faulty.
Again, to the OP: Does the cable work for syncing to a PC to transfer data? If it doesn't work at all, that's a sign that D+ or D- of the cable is open.
Meh, some people use words such as charger and cable interchangeably in terms of their truer intended meanings at times.
I was simply trying to cover that base.
Not sure if the cable works for data ....as I do everything over the air. The cable was giving me troubles at the tab end, (loose connection) but lately has been working OK.
I also haven't been charging and using at the same time lately either. I really needto contact Samsung and talk to them about a warranty replacement, but I have a feeling I'd be better off just buying a new one off Amazon or the like....

I have the same issue. Check that with different cables. So cable and charger is not the reason
If you're running a ROM with Pershoot's kernel, you can "Enable Charge From ANY USB" (see link in my signature). If you're running something else, you can make yourself a "DIY Universal Charging Inline Cable" that will trick the Tab into charging off anything (again, see the link in my signature).
But before you go out spending money (even if it's just a little bit of $$$) you should see if the cable works for data transfer between your computer and the tab.
If the cable works, then the "DIY Universal Charging Inline Cable" will keep you going until Samsung sends you a replacement charger.
I had this problem and didn't know what was wrong for a while. It turned out the the charger wasn't plugged in all the way in the outlet. I guess it wasn't getting all the juice it needed.
Am suddenly getting this problem tonight also it sometimes turns my tablet off but won't let me turn it on till I pull the charger out.I've also noticed that if I plug it in when the tab is off the battery sometimes comes up saying it's charging
just plugged the usb lead in to 2 laptops and they both show a usb error
I started having the same problem 2 days ago. All of a sudden i plugged in the wall charger and it went into MTP mode. It will charge if turned off but I've noticed it takes a much longer time to charge. From 3% it took almost 24 hrs to completly charge. Thinking that I'll have to buy a new wall charger.
Please help
Another one about charging...
My 10.1 P7510 takes tooooo long to charge, even beeing off. If I connect it to my notebook data transfer is correct but battery keeps draining, or at least not charging. If I turn it off (either connected to PC or charger) the charging icon appears correctly. I must say that cable (and charger) are not the original ones
Is it a problem of the Tab, or cable, and/or charger ?
I think the charger did not have enough current to charge the tab while still using it. The stock charger should be rated at 5V 2A. I tried another charger with only 1A and it still worked. Anything lower than 1A will end up showing that MTP mode.

I've got the same problem myself except I had to clean the charger clean of marinade sauce (it's a long story, don't ask!) and I took the device back to my local Vodafone store (I got it on a Mobile Broadband contract) as I thought it was faulty. They claimed the device was working fine although they used their own cable and not mine. They also claimed that if it was the cable, I should be easily able to buy one.
I tried buying one in every store I could think of, including the phone repair shops and they didn't sell them at all!
It's just a shame that a tablet like this which could have been a great tablet is crippled not only with no MicroSD slot, but also using a crappy proprietary socket whereas all the other Tabs have a MicroSD slot/uses a Micro USB port.
(I've already ordered a replacement cable from Amazon UK in any case for a reasonable price)
mtp-connected and media scanner running
I bought. My Tab 8.9 last November, only started having this problem since last night. There is red cross and mtp-connected,also,"media scanner running". I am using original cable and adapter that come with the Tab. Has anyone here found a solution?
When the phone is off and plugged into the wall, it charges. When the phone is on, and I plug it into the wall or computer, the phone doesn't know it's plugged in.
I ordered a brand new usb charging flex jack and replaced the old one, still the same problem. What gives?
EDIT: I am stock. Not rooted.
Does this happen on the original cable also?
Have you tried wiping?
Is Fast Charge on?
Fk. It doesn't even charge from the wall! When the phone is off, it has the animation that says it's charging when i plug it in the wall. I left it plugged into the wall overnight. This morning I took a look at the phone, and it didn't charge!
Oh noez, what should i do?
Also, I don't have the original cable. I'm using an HTC one.
EDIT: Dafuq?! I found an LG charger. Apparently the phone knows that it's charging when I charge with that. The thing is, that charger is just a charger; it's not a usb cable+ an adaptor. So I can't use it for adb and such.

You should mention what ROM you're on (and version) so that no one else makes the same mistake I did in assuming you had a custom ROM and that Fast Charge is on. It's a feature that makes sure that whatever charges it is recognised as AC 1amp charger as some chargers aren't designed well enough (I believe it involves a single solder point) to report themselves as capable of 1A. If it doesn't report as AC to Android, it will charge at 500mA instead (it assumes USB power). It sometimes causes problems with connecting to PC via USB.
Get another USB cable, this time none of that fancy **** go straight to OE Samsung or something.
=O I thot all usb cables are made equal! So I can't use an HTC usb cable? The dude didn't sell me the phone with a cable T.T
Also, I'm stock. I am not even rooted.
My nexus just started acting stupid when I plug it in also.
Mine sat in a drawer for a few weeks and when I plugged it in to charge, it wouldn't.
What I did was this.
plug device into charger
remove battery for a few seconds
replace battery
press power button
phone powered up and began charging.
Even now, it still sometimes doesn't recognize the charger and I have to unplug and plug it in until it does.
I use a rocketfish cable.

Some devices are picky, you'd think that all USB cables are made equal (I did too) but some just don't work well with certain devices. I've had printers th... wait printers always have **** problems... I've had uh... usb extensions not work well with some Wifi dongles and such. My old milestone didn't like the Samsung cable either (yet the Moto cable works perfectly on gnex)
=O. Then it has to be the usb cable! No way it's not!
I ordered one on ebay =D
Rooted Gnex here I come!

Thank you dmappdev,
I followed your procedure (feel like talking about surgery here, which isn't too far from topic); I'm convinced that it helped in some way, directly or indirectly... as at first, my Galaxy S Advance still wouldn't recognize/charge my phone with:
1. its own charger,
2. my old Galaxy Ace's charger,
3. a universal wall usb plug used with the S Advanced own USB-to-USBmini cable.
My last idea was to use, quote: an old Nokia USB cable connected to my PC... and that worked.
I was much too happy my phone had remembered how to charge to stay mad... But I still tried those three means for charging again, and only the phone's original charger worked now. So the phone's charging ability has been "awakened" in some way, but only for the original charger ...technology is improving, but not the ethics on making life easier for the consumer.
All this was yesterday. This morning (there's more, yes), I saw my phone indicating a 100% charge although it had been disconnected from charge for several hours - something that had already happened once yesterday, before the unable-to-charge situation; a simple reboot took care of the problem, the battery status now showing a more realistic 53%.
Any comments to any of the above? If not, thanks again for your tip anyway !!!

If you are using a non powered USB hub while it has other devices (e.g Hard disk) connected to it, then that is your problem. Connect the phone directly to a USB port on your PC.
P.S : On certain desktop cases, front USB ports may also give out this type of low power warnings, in that case connect it to one of the back USB ports.
Also USB to pc charge is a trickle charge very easy to kill battery if gaming and connected to pc.

I got the same message today! Before charging, 76% remaining, after 2hrs, now only 24% left, I've never touched my phone once I plugged it into USB port (direct connection to MacBook Pro USB port), and the screen remains off, weird.
This error comes only when any heavy app is runing and is being charged via PC/laptop....and btw what was the charge on ur phone when this error occured?? It occured to me when i was charging it through my laptop and playing angry birds (the charge was around 10% when it happened)...
i guess the current provided by laptop is 0.5A and sometimes HOX can use 1 to 1.5 A....
The message is exactly what your usage is unless I have misread it. Like the poster above, the USB port maximum current draw is limited to 500mA (with temporary draw of 100mA for the No Dead Battery provision) whereas the charger supplied with your phone can deliver upto 1A. So at some point in time, esp. under heavy use you are likely to drain more than what you can add to the battery, esp. if it is getting trickle charged at lower current from your PC. I remember other similar examples with my old HTC Sensation detecting my USB car charger as if from a computer when using GPS and the battery level going down over the journey.
Next time try doing whatever caused this error but with a wall powered charger instead.

I agree, a pc only gives 5V 500mAh output from the USB ports. u need atleast 5V 1A for the phone to charge in normal speed. I never use any charger that has less than 1A output. (my car charger has 5V 2.1A)
Just think of it like this: the bigger screen u have, the more power u need to charge since the screen uses the most of the device's power.
If you try to charge it with the pc's USB then it takes much longer time to charge it because the phone uses some of the power simultanously (even in standby mode)
Im charging my one x via the original wall charger, but i get the same error message too. And i didnt even touch my phone, no app were running at all
I get this message while charging in the car and using navigation. I got a 1A charger now for the car too.
Does anyone know what output charger is still safe to use with this phone? Can you go higher than 1A?
There is a bug in HTC One's. I've got an M9 and I get this message. It needs to be rebooted until the message stops appearing. Can take up to three attempts before it's clear.
Good day to all.
I have this problem with my note 2.
The problem is that it wont charge using the original cable and power adaptor that comes with it.
But if i combine the cable with adaptor used in iphone it works.
Im sure the power adaptor is fine because if i use it with other device it works.
There is also problem connecting to a computer.
While connected to a computer it will not also charge and not able to read by the computer. No response or anything.
I hope someone can give answer to my problem.

Yup. It worked with other unit..
Just because it works with another device, doesn't mean it's ok. If it's only putting out say 1amp, that would be enough to charge my SG2 for instance, but not the Note 2. Plug it in and monitor how much juice is coming in, I use battery monitor widget pro, but I'm certain that there are other options.

Hello,
I have seen posts like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189978 but i would like to clarify if the GN-5110 does not allow to charge via USB
Battery shows up a Lightning and a Red Cross whenever i plug it in to the USB, the thing is that it is able to read/write data to device and charges (slowly but i guess that is because of the 2 amp is not fulfilled by the USB port)
Is this normal within the 5110? I have been using the Original Charger and the Original USB Cable

nope...nothing wrong with it...it's standard if you're rooted or not....
a USB plug via computer doesn't provide enough amps to fully charge it...Even though the red cross is there and you leave your tablet off, it will charge slowly
I would suggest trying out galaxy charging current from the appstore...you can monitor how many amps are being delivered depending on your charging methods
