Easy..
1. Have phone plugged in
2. do: adb shell
3. do: umount /sdcard
4. do: parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
5. do: print
6. do: rm X (where X is the number of partitions you see from #5)
7. If you have 3 partitions previously, repeat #6 3 times, but replace X with 1,2,3 respectively.
8. do: print (to make sure that nothing else is there, should be empty)
9. do: mkpartfs primary fat32 0 nnnn (where nnn is the number of MB can be found on second or third line of print command in #5. Example, if you have an 8GB card, it'll be like 7958MB when you print it. So put 7958 in place of nnnn)
10. mount /sdcard
Done or just use a card reader and Windows to delete all partition and reformat.

im no evo user, but if i choose wipe ext in the recovery menu would that get rid of the partition?

The easiest way that I've found to do it (if you're rooted of course and have a custom recovery) is that you boot into recovery mode, then go to the option to partition the SD card, then just set everything to ZERO (swap, Ext2) and voila! you now have a SD card that is back to normal..
at least it did for me...

Hey thanks alot everyone
just to note I have tried the wipe ext partition method before without success...

How do you set up a2sd correctly? Please Help!

I am running Myn's rom and cannot figure out how to set up the a2sd correctly. Can anyone help me with this? Please!
Make sure your sd card is partitioned then download darktremor a2sd. I flash it after a clean install then go to the market download terminal emulator its free. Then type "su" then hit enter it should ask for superuser permission accept then type "a2sd cachepart" then it will do the rest and automatically reboot and your good

Please help me with this...so lost.
Rom: Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS4
Kernel: "2.6.32.15-netarchy-toastmod-4.9.1-cfs [email protected] #8"
I've tried this:
This is how I got my apps2sd to work.
1. BACK UP YOUR MEMORY CARD TO YOUR COMPUTER
2. Using AmonRa's recovery
3. Boot into recovery mode
4. Select Partition SD card
4. Set: 512 Ext: 1024
5. let it finish select SD:ext2 to ext3
6. go back to usb-ms toggle
7. Put all your stuff back on your memory card now
8. I went to Wipe data/factory reset then wipe cache, wipe Dalvik-cache and finally wipe SD:ext partition.
9. Then flash the rom and let it boot all the way up
10. Reboot into Recovery
11. I flashed kings bfs #9 and Baked #6 and both work (may work with stock kernal, but have not tryied it)
12. reboot
13. connect usb to phone and using adb type (IF ADB IS NOT WORKING FOR YOU USE THE INSTRUCTION BELOW IN RED)
Code:
adb shell
then
Code:
/system/bin/a2sd check
you should see some properties
scroll down and look to see if dalvik cache is run on sd card if not type
Code:
a2sd cachesd
the phone will reboot by itself
If phone is stuck in boot screen, kernal may not support apps2sd, try to install a other kernal.
once again using adb type
Code:
adb shell
then
Code:
/system/bin/a2sd check
make sure dalvik cache is now running on sdcard
also check to see if Zipalign is set to boot if not type
Code:
a2sd zipalign
And I've tried this:
1. Download the program from the previous post.
2. Determine if you have setup your sd card with an ext partition
if you have setup your sd card already (existing users of a2sd...any version):
A. Copy the program to your sd card.
b. Reboot into recovery
if you have not setup your sd card (for those new to a2sd):
A. backup your sd card to your computer. can't stress this enough, as partitioning will wipe the entire card.
B. Reboot into recovery
c. In android system recovery, select partition sdcard
d. In the partition sdcard menu, select partition sd
e. Follow the instructions on the phone to partition your sd card. You can optionally set a swap file while you are partitioning your sd card.
F. In the partition sdcard menu, select sd:ext2 to ext3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
G. only perform this step if you want ext4 and your rom supports it: in the partition sdcard menu, select sd:ext3 to ext4. Follow the instructions on the sdcard.
h. Press the back button on the phone to go back to the main menu.
I. Put the a2sd file on the sd card (and all your other files you backed up earlier) by selecting usb-ms toggle and transfer the files to your computer.
3. In recovery, select flash zip from sdcard.
4. In flash zip from sdcard, select the a2sd package file you downloaded earlier. Press home to flash.
5. Reboot phone.
And it still shows my apps are taking up internal storage. What the hell am I doing wrong? Please help me out with this, it's starting to drive me nuts. I can't have all my games on my phone, let alone market apps. Please and thankyou.

Correct - you are not partitioned. Do this from above:
1. BACK UP YOUR MEMORY CARD TO YOUR COMPUTER ( as in - copy/paste)
2. Using AmonRa's recovery
3. Boot into recovery mode
4. Select Partition SD card
4. Set: 512 Ext: 1024
5. let it finish select SD:ext2 to ext3
6. go back to usb-ms toggle
7. Put all your stuff back on your memory card now (you’ve essentially wiped your sd card so you have to put stuff back)

IIrc asec is where the froyo apps2sd hack stores its stuff. So ignore it, wrong byte order for fat32, -hack- but no readable data so the kernel can retrieve lost symlinks to apps - hack-

[Q] Few questions about flashing custom ROM.

Hi all,
Successfully rooted my Desire today using Unrevoked method.
Since I quite like the Sense UI, I've decided on flashing the "[FroYo Sense] LeeDrOiD V2.3b (17/12 l Official l OC&UV l FAST l STABLE l WWE)" ROM.
My phone software details are as mentioned in the signature.
a. Can I flash Leedroid without upgrading radio, etc?
b. How exactly do I format my SD card in ext3 partition? [Can't find a tutorial/thread to do the same.] --
Also, regarding using gparted in linux, do I directly, say use card reader/connect the phone and format? Since I have a 16GB SD card, I intend to have a 1 GB ext3 partition.
What exactly does "Flash Rom (you may need to toggle signature verifacation)" mean? :-o
and
"# Flash Radio (unless you already have it)"??
I am following the steps/instructions from this link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703
Thanks in advance.
Radio is fine (don't flash any radio until you really know what you are doing), to toggle signature verification go, in recovery, to 'install zip form sd' there is the option to toggle verification.
How to partition your sd cared with gparted is mentioned enough, do some more searching. There are also some videos on youtube on how to do it. If you have the ability to use a cared reader use it.

Although, it is said that flashing the radios recommended by the dev would be better for battery life, but I guess it is quite open to interpretation.
You could also try using Rom Manager (by ClockworkMod) to partition your SD card through your phone. That's what I did. Less hassle (probably?) than using gparted or installing additional software on your PC.
ROM Manager (from the market) is your friend.....
Will allow you to partition an EXT3 (up to 512mb - Im still trying to figure out how to create a 1GB partition) and then will allow you to flash LeeDroid ROM.
ROM Manager is very simple to use. Just copy the ROM (zip) to a folder on your SD card, use ROM Manager to create your EXT3, do a NANDROID backup (!!!), and then flash the ROM.
Best bet is to backup your apps and data first (use Titanium ?).
LeeDroid ROM is great

To easily create your partition up to 1024 MB, you can use an Ubuntu live cd of GParted by either burning it to a cd or boot it from a usb stick: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download.
Or, you use it from within Ubuntu (vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVK-tJe8pXE&feature=related)
1) Connect your phone to your computer (or use an SD Card adapter...., in this case skip to 4)
2) Pull down the notification bar and mount the phone
3) Start Gparted
4) Gparted will search available drives. (Your phone should show up as a USB drive, and will be something like /dev/sdb1 or /dev/sdc1, etc..)
Warning: double-check you've not selected a hdd by mistake!
5) In the upper right corner, select the correct USB device for your phone. (i.e. check to make sure it is correct size for your SD card)
6) Right click on each partition and select 'unmount'
7) Right click on each partition and select 'delete'
If you know what you are doing, you can re-size the partitions and add a new 2nd partition formatted as ext2/3/4
8) Right click on the big gray bar (should say unallocated x.xx gb) and click 'new'
9) Enter configurations
Free Space preceding = 0
Create as = Primary
New size = [don't touch]
File system = fat32
Free Space Following = 512 (or whatever you want)
10) Click add
11) Right click on the big gray bar (should say unallocated x.xx gb) and click 'new'
12) Enter configurations
Free Space preceding = 0
Create as = Primary
New size = [don't touch]
File system = ext2/3/4 (recommend ext4)
Free Space Following = 0 (or ~32 if you want swap)
Click add
13) Click edit, then 'Apply All Operations' to write changes to disk
14) Quit GParted
15) Unmount your SD Card
16) Reboot your phone
You could also use Amon-Ra custom recovery to do this by flashing it with unrEVOked.

It is very easy to follow the instructions posted above, I even linked a YouTube video for you and gave you a link on how to create the live cd. You should be fine, give it a go
You won't believe how easy it is... its just because you are unfamiliar with the OS platform.
If you are really struggling, then try this method but be careful as you will be connecting via USB to the PC and executing an automated script (batch file). While the batch file i running, do not disconnect the USB cable while in recovery mode:
1. Turn on your phone while holding the volume down button.
2. You will see HBOOT on the screen.
3. Use the volume buttons to move up and down and power button to select the RECOVERY option.
4. You will now see a red triangle on the screen, at this point plug your phone into your PC via your microUSB cable.
5. Wait for 10-15 seconds and then double click on recovery-windows.bat inside the pushfiles_windows.zip folder you unzipped as part of the root process. pushfiles_windows.zip
6. Using the optical trackpad select Partition sdcard > Partition SD
7. Select SWAP=0, EXT2=1024 and allow the rest to be FAT32.
8. Select the SD:ext2 to ext3 option in this menu.
9. Go back to the Recovery Console main menu and select Reboot system now. While rebooting, unplug the Desire from the USB port.
Windows Pushfiles attached below for you.
Thank you all! And MasDroid, thanks for the detailed instructions. I do have Ubuntu on my desktop. Tried formatting on a spare SD card using GParted and seems to be just the perfect thing. I'll do some more reading before flashing the phone. I do have some more doubts. Wanna make sure that I know what am doing.
@ wilbur-force
Dont know, a friend of mine gave my arcronis, think it was the full version. G-parted did not find my cardreader. And the 512mb whit rom manager was not enough space for me. Sorry for my bad english...

Are the following steps in order and correct (to flash LeeDroid ROM)?
a. Create Nandroid and Titanium backup of the phone.
b. Copy the contents of SD card to a folder onto the PC.
c. Format the SD card with FAT32 and ext3 partition (A2SD+)
d. Copy the LeeDrOiD_V2.3b_A2SD ZIP folder to the SD card (root)
e. Insert the SD card to the phone and boot into recovery
Doubt here: Do I need to 'Wipe Data / Factory Reset' again??
f. Install zip from SD Card.
g. Choose zip from SD Card.
h. Reboot System Now.
Are these steps correct?
Also, after flashing how do I restore the Nandroid/Titanium backup? Do I have to copy the contents (step b) back to the phone and boot into recover and "restore" using Clockwork MOD??
Thanks!
Yes correct order.
Wipe again? In your list I can't find the first factory reset, but yes you should wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache (under advanced) at that point.
After flashing you can restore your apps with titanium, restoring the nandroid (in recovery) will revert your phone back to the state it was of the nandroid so leedroid will be gone. Personally i don't use titanium so can't tell you how to do that, but i sync my apps with appbrain and reinstall them again after flashing.
I do know that is you want to use titanium the backup needs to be copied back to the sd card.

Do I have to do a factory reset from recovery at first?
Also after formatting the SD card with the FAT32 and ext3 partitions, do I copy back the previous contents of the SD card back to the phone along with the LeeDroid ROM?
Not before the nandroid if you meant that, wipe before flashing leedroid. So once you're in recovery to flash the rom, first wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache and then flash leedroid in the same session (without rebooting).
Best is to copy back the contend of the sd card, however if you want to start with a clean cart you can also just copy back the clockworkmod folder and the titanium folder.

Thanks again mate.
So here's another of my doubt -- say, I copy the LeeDroid ROM to the SD and boot into recovery to flash the ROM and do a factory reset, would this not delete the ROM also from the SD card? My first ROM flashing and hence these doubts :-o
Thanks for your patience.
Can I just copy back the Titanium backup folder after booting into LeeDroid ROM? :-o
Sd card won't be affected by a factory reset nor by flashing.
You can copy the titanium folder whenever you want.

Have you tried Rom Manager? I used that to partition my 16GB sandisk
I used Ubuntu and it worked fine. Did you unmount the partitions in Ubuntu ?
Did you format the partition after you've created it ?

Hi, thanks for the replies, yes i unmounted in ubuntu but i seem to only be able to create one (working) ext partition but it has to be the full card, or multiple Fat partitions. When i create an ext after the FAT32 partition all partition managers & ubuntu see the second partition as 'other' and it is full.
When creating an ext with ubuntu it indicates 'cannot mount invalid argument'.
I have not tried using AMON as i was unsure if it was dependent upon GSM or CDMA type phones and also any issues with Amoled or SLED (my desire is SLED).
Tried Rom Manager an it does not even attempt to create a partition, indicates complete but nothing when i view partitions with either partition managers or ubuntu.
Lastly, tried via ADB but again it threw an error when creating the second EXT Partition, it creates a partition of sorts but again unknown and full.
In all cases, i cannot format the ext partition with any tools i know - ubuntu, partition manager, Esaus, ADB
Never had this issue with my 8gb Nokia card
Many thanks for your help though guys & girls
hi,
i read you try to do this with adb.. did you try the folowing cmd?
Code:
Step 1: Connect your phone to your computer via USB. Reboot into recovery mode.
Command: adb shell reboot recovery (this will reboot your phone into Cyanogen’s recovery image. Or power on phone when holding home button)
Command: adb shell (type this after your phone has booted and on the recovery screen. it should take you to a # prompt)
Code:
Step 2: Open parted to partition your SD card.
Command: parted /dev/block/mmcblk0 (opens parted and mounts your SD card)
Code:
Step 3: Check the size and partitions of your SD card. The print command will display this info. You can see the size of my SD card is 7969 MB (8 GB). I have 1 partition which is fat32. If your SD card is blank and no partitions are listed, you can skip to Step 5.
Command: print (displays SD card information)
Code:
Step 4: Remove all existing partitions. If you have multiple partitions, remove each one at a time.
Command: rm 1 (deletes partition number 1)
Command: rm 2 (if needed. keep going till all partitions are removed)
Command: print (check when you are done to make sure all partitions are removed)
more info howTO parted there
hope this help

The procedure should be this:
Insert SD, unmount. Create FAT, leave 1024, format FAT, format remaining as ext3/4.

hi,
i read you try to do this with adb.. did you try the folowing cmd?

Many thanks, tried this procedure again with the error message SEGV_MAPPER (Address not mapped to object) Aborted when i try to create EXT 2
Lost now
hi,
i look up the reason of that error, seems to be a bug from some lib.c inherited by parted but those are mention around 2006 amazing...
i know that the tut mentin ext2 as ext partition but why didn't try ext3 before doing this u can check out what does your actually partition says with
# fdisk -lu /dev/block/mmcblk0
give back the report plz
I suggest Amon-RA recovery.
It's very simple and fast
p.s: i don't suggest using Rom Manager, too much trouble

Hi Thanks for your help, i tried to partition ext 2, 3 & 4 but get the same issue regardless of partition type. I believe that the card may be a fake as all the transferring from phone to usb card reader has started to make the branding 'rub off'.
Therefore, i have sent it back and will hopefully get a refund or replacement.
many thanks for your time & efforts

Boot loop after sdcard repartition. URGENT!

Hi,
I have Cyanogenmod 7 on my Desire.
And I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on my PC.
I copied the contents of my SD Card and the Apps2SD Partition (including hidden files), erased my SD Card and formatted it again (ext3 and FAT32), copied everything back (including hidden files) and now I get a boot loop.
-I used MicroSD>SD Card Adapter>PC
-I can access recovery
-I reduced the size of the ext partition from 1GB to 700MB
-I didn't make a nandroid backup before I did this.
-I changed the label of the ext partition.
-I'm using this for Apps2SD
Is there possibly some sort of temporary files/cache I can delete to make it work?
Thanks

The order of the partitions have to be FAT32 followed by the ext3 (and not viceversa)...Is it?

They are in that order (unless you mean formatted first?)
The important thing is that the first partition is a fat32, and the second the ext
From the recovery menu try to see if it can mount the ext partition (try just a mount/unmount of the sd-ext to check if the recovery can access the ext) otherwise u can format it from the recovery and then copy back the files from ur pc car reader
U can also try wiping cache and dalvik cache, but don't think will have effects
Otherwise I have no other ideas

If the recovery can acces the ext, will just say u that is mounted (so everything is ok regarding that partition), otherwise u will get an error like "E:Can't mount dev/block/mmcblk0p2", in this last case u can try formatting the ext from the recovery menu, then restore the files in it (previously backupped) manually

I went to the recovery menu and then I chose mounts and storage then I chose mount /sd-ext and then nothing happens. I can go and chose unmount /sd-ext, nothing changes except the text that says mount/unmount. No error messages.
What do I do now?

Why u didn't make a nandroid backup? A simple solution now will be to do a fresh install of ur rom again...
Anyway change the thread title.."Boot loop" is too generic, edit it as Boot loop after sdcard repartition URGENT, something like this...(To edit it just edit the first post title)
I hope someone else here can help u..I dont have other ideas, if the sdext is correclty read from the recovery, mean even ur rom should read it and should boot..How much time did u wait? are u sure the boot continue to loop? Go in recovery, wipe cache and dalvik, reboot and wait..U could also do "adb logcat" when ur phone is booting..Search for some guides for it..That will show u some possible errors during the boot that make ur phone bootlooping
Also try this: i read somewhere the ext partition label must be sd-ext (some a2sd script use the label to idenify the partition)(this label is automatically applied when u create/format the ext from the recovery, but as u created the partition ur self from the pc, put that label and see what happen)

I've tried putting the label as sd-ext. Didn't work
I know I have waited long enough because the animation of the skateboarding blue android repeats (he comes in from the side again).

[BETA 0.2.1][04.01.12] ICS for Desire help

Hello guys,
I have installed the above rom by Sandvold, rom is running well. I have intermediate technical skills but have been out of it for a bit. The rom is working well, no issues, but the rom thread mentions a lot about apps2sd, etc, and running scripts. My appps allocation is as follows, 99mb used and 49mb free. Should I be doing something to dalvik cache, running a script to allocate more space or ensuring everything is installed on the SD card. I am posting here becuase they dont like posts such as this in that thread. I would appreciate a small tutorial about this situation please i.e. what I shlould be doing after installing the rom so that i can get maximum space free on my phone.
many thanks in advance.

And make sure your SD card has a FAT32-partiton with rest available space and an EXT4-partition with at least 512 MB, better 1 - 2 GB. If you configure(d) your SD card with GParted, check that both partitions are primary.

I had the same problem as you do, and I found a script that made it work for me at least.
First off I wiped the whole phone clean, including the SD Card.
After that I formated the SD card like this (3965 MB card)
0 - 2909 fat32
2909 - 3933 ext4
3933 - 3965 linux-swap
How you do this is by going into the phone with ADB and do the following (Im using Windows7 so I used commandpromt):
Open commandprompt and type in "adb shell" (Assuming you have the requirments for this).
Once in you should se somethine like this "~ #" or "/ #". After this you type "parted /dev/block/mmcblk0"
This will give a prompt like this "<parted>", here you can type "print" and and see the exact size of your SDcard in MB and your current partitioning.
Decide how you want to partion your card (I used 1024 MB ext4 partion for my apps)
Remove your current partitions with "rm 1" where the 1 stand for the partition number. You should see thoose numbers when you type in "print"
When you removed all you can begin to create the new partitions by doing this:
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 2909
mkpartfs primary ext2 2909 3933 (You have to creat a ext2 partion first and then "upgrade it" to an ext4)
mkpartfs primary linux-swap 3933 3965
Type "print" again to make sure you have the correct sizes and all partitions you want, if you have then type "quit"
Now you have to "upgrade" the ext2 partition to an ext4. This you have to do in 2 steps.
First from ext2 to ext3. In the "/ #" promt type the following: "tune2fs -j /dev/block/mmcblk0p2" where the 2 is for partition number 2. After this you should have a ext3 partition instead of a ext2.
From ext3 to ext4 you do this:
"tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/block/mmcblk0p2"
"e2fsck -fpDC0 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2"
Now when you have the partitions right you can move on to installing the ROM on the phone.
First you should download the old files that is in the bottom of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10692249&postcount=1299
Extract the zip folder and send over the "A2SDKillerV5.zip" and "Data2SDInstallerV5_aosp.zip" to your SDcard.
From recovery install the ROM. When it is done, move back to the menu and do not reboot. Instead install the "A2SDKillerV5.zip" and when that is done reboot the phone and make sure it boots correctly. Take the "on first start" guide but do not login to your google-account. And do now download any apps or even go into market. After this reboot into recovery mode again.
When back in recovery mode, install the "Data2SDInstallerV5_aosp.zip". When its done you can reboot and you should have ~1GB to install apps on (Or whatever size you choosed)
Hope this will help you as much as it did to me
Kind regards Cykelstyre

Much easier to install 4ext recovery.
I know I probably shouldn't be doing this but: When I was running a Gingerbread Rom the stock player found my music on my SD card. When moving to this rom, it refuses to find ANY music in the card. Downloaded some third party players like Poweramp etc and still it refuses to find my music. Don't know what to do now (Trivial I know but I really want to play around with the ICS rom but I do listen to music a lot so it's a hinderence that it doesn't work)

Is that with the latest one, 3.4?
I had the same problem with 3.3, but its ok with 3.4. I have my music back.
When going from 3.3 to 3.4 I cleaned the folders on my sdcard. I dont know if that helped, maybe worth a try though. Heres what I did
Mount usb in recovery, deleting all folders except the ones I wanted to keep, ie music, pictures, titanium backup etc
Full wipe
Install rom
My music came back
I thought that ROM had A2SD built in and you just needed to run an adb command to enable it?
I've flashed this ROM & followed the instruction in running the script in the command prompt rebooted all's well here!
