Android Sprint Touch Pro on Cricket? - Touch Pro, Fuze Android Development

Is it possible to run a Sprint Touch Pro on Android, also having both the Windows Mobile and Android flashed to cricket? Considering getting one of these for my gf whose only option is Cricket... At the same time having epicness of a Touch Pro on Android.
I have a Touch Pro 2 on T Mobile running the Android, does this also use Haret?
Sorry for being a noob, just wanna make sure I can do this before I run out and buy a Sprint Touch Pro. It looks so much better than Verizon's.

I wouldn't go for the Sprint TP or the Verizon TP as both are actually a separate CDMA model known as the Herman (as opposed to the Raphael). Apparently the Herman is noticeably worse than the Touch Pro; it overheats, is unresponsive at times and has poor call reception. On top of that you don't get a front-facing camera It is possible to run XDANDROID on the Herman, though.
As they are both CDMA, you'll have to get the other carrier (Cricket) to register the phone's serial number on its network before it will work. If your girlfriend has a Cricket SIM card it would be much easier to just use an unlocked Touch Pro GSM.
I suggest you go for an actual HTC Touch Pro instead, or at least a Fuze.
Yes, the Touch Pro2 uses Haret.

Wow....ok not to make fun and I know you are TRYING to help but, you have just given the worst advice ever. First off CRICKET is NOT a GSM carrier so NO SIM CARD!! The Sprint touch pro does NOT have any of the problems you just stated. It's a Raph800 but yes it IS known as the Herman. I have one. AND it's on Cricket...AND I'M RUNNING ANDROID. As well as WinMo 6.5.x AND sense 2.5. Disregard everything this guy just said.

Oops I knew I shouldn't have listened to them voices in my head-brain...
To be honest I hadn't ever heard of Cricket as I don't live in the US. I meant the 500 (Verizon model). Regardless, I would try to avoid the CDMA if it's at all possible - support on this site for it is much thinner than the GSM.

Problem is, just like Sprint & Verizon, Cricket is CDMA only... So his only option is a CDMA phone, no SIM card available in CDMA models.

I know, but if he really has his heart set on a Touch Pro then it might be worth getting a GSM contract instead.
OP, what is it specifically about the Touch Pro that you like so much? You can get qwerty Android phones and there's always the Touch Pro2... Is it to do with budget or functionality?

Cricket has no contracts, hence the reason it is a good option for those looking for a 'cheap' (relatively) cell carrier.
I don't know of any GSM carriers in the states that offer what Cricket does, short of the pay-per-minute ones.
I'd go with a TP2 or an Android-specific device as well. So why is your heart set on the TP?

It is possible to have the Sprint Touch Pro on Cricket; it is what I am currently running here in the Central California market. While Android may not be "flashed" onto the device, it can be run from the microSD card via HaRET. As of 6/14/2010 1400, I am able to make and receive calls and SMS, but the data connection isn't working and I haven't even tried MMS. It is all still a work in progress, and the guys behind this are making it happen fast. Everything I did to make Android work on my Touch Pro can be found here:

(just found out the hard way that I cannot post links; copy & paste the above line into your browser)
As a Cricket user I have to say, this has been one of the most beautiful devices to ever touch Cricket's network, Android OR Windows Mobile 6.x (I'm running 6.1; a tad bit snappier than 6.5).

Not really a Cricket device you have there... don't mean to rain on your parade
BUT to get the net working have you tried setting up the proxy needed for Cricket service? I'm honestly not sure how to do that in Android, but I'm sure it's possible.

have you tried setting up the proxy needed for Cricket service?
Went into the APN settings and entered wap.mycricket.com on port 8080 as the proxy with my username as [email protected] and ******* as the password - no luck. Found a page somewhere on ppcgeeks which stated you had to enter the username information into /etc/ppp/pap-secrets as well as /etc/ppp/options.smd1 (or something along those lines), but that didn't prove to be helpful - not only was it meant for U.S. Cellular (I adjusted what needed adjusting), the necessary information was already contained in said files. Toggled Airplane Mode on & off, no dice. Rebooted & ran HaRET again, nada. The only successful data connection I had was with WiFi. Using that, I was able to log on to the app market and download a file explorer (and an SNES emulator =), so at the very least I can browse files graphically (and the page I found on PPC geeks specified this app in particular).
But yeah, with these dudes making strides daily, it may soon become a non-issue.
*edit*
No worries; there's no raining on this parade. I got a Touch Pro for cheap, real cheap, as an upgrade from a Mogul (Titan). Became so accustomed to its sluggishness that the raw speed of the Touch Pro caught my attention immediately. It's nice that Sprint and Cricket use the same technology. 8^D

Alltel Touch on Verizon

Is there any way to use an Alltel Touch on the Verizon network?
Two situations here
1) A friend has a Touch and is currently on Alltel. They have moved to a non-Alltel covered area (that is covered by Verizon) and want to continue to use their Touch - can they?
2) Alltel Touch phones cheap ($225) on eBay and I'd like to pick up one as a spare (I'm a Verizon customer). Would it be possible to add it to Verizon's network.
TIA!
Actually you cant get any other non-verizon phones on their network because they only allow Verizon ESN numbers on their network. Not until they open up in the coming months will they allow other carriers phones, yet they still have to approve the phone which imo defeats the purpose of "open access."
I have the alltel/sprint rom on my xv6900 works flawlessly.

It can be done. The easy part is the software conversion and getting data working the hard part is getting the esn added in. Here is a post by me on ppcgeeks.com if you would like to try it http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20090

Question for T-mobile HTC Touch Pro 2

So basically i currently have an iphone and att. I dont have a data plan on the iphone(got it unlocked). I have someone who wants to trade me a HTC Touch Pro 2 from t-mobile for my iphone. I used to own a htc tilt and the hermes before that one, so i have an idea of roms, and hard-spl and some other stuff. And i been wanting to get back into an htc just avoid the diamond and 1st touch pro altogether because of the touch screen(which in my opinion felt worse than hermes). This one looks a lot more promising in touch controls so i am interested in HTC again. What i basically want to know is if there's a way to unlock the touch pro 2 for me to use on att. Im pretty sure the sprint versions of the phone dont work on ATT, but i wanted to know if a t-mobile version would work, since att and t-mobile use sim cards. Im just asking cuz i never used a tmobile phone on att, or vice versa.
Yes it is possible, I have a unlocked tmobile touch pro 2 which i am using in Att. The con to using a tmobile phone is you wont get att 3g speed but you will get edge and wont need the 30 dolar data plan the 10 dollar one works as well.
AS stated above you won't get AT&T 3G. I personally couldn't use a browser on edge.
But then again it depends where you located, as to what speed you get. 3g is faster but edge isnt too bad and besides i use wifi most of the time haha
Well i dont have a data plan. That doesnt really bother me because the majority of places i am at have wifi signals. Well im deciding between touch pro 2 and the mytouch 3g. I have those 2 trade offers. Im not so sure about the mytouch only because it seems pointless to get since its touch screen only, and versus the iphone, prolly not worth it.Unless the android os is better than iphones. Butthe touch pro 2, has a keyboard, bigger screen, plus an OS im quite familiar with. But who knows, i never really tried android extensively but i am willing to see what the hype is all about. I remember before the first android phone was released, users on this site were trying to get android running on the kaiser. Lol. So i have been wanting to see what its like, if its worth it. Im unsure, but atleast i know it will work on ATT if i make the decision, thanx for the input.
Well it al depends on what you look for in a phone, if you wanna try something new do the mytouch, but i can say the tp2 is by far the funnest htc ive had and you can do alot with them.
Well the person i was going to trade for the t-mobile touch pro 2 never contacted me so i held off on making trades. Im just not too crazy about the mytouch. I did have an offer some1 wanted to give me a HTC Hero and $100. But im not on sprint so i didnt want to cancel att for the Hero. On the other hand, i have a trade with a man who has a Sprint HTC Touch Pro 2 and he says its GSM compatible, that it would work on ATT and compatible for any network. Now i spoke to him on phone and havent checked his phone yet, but i did read that the sprint version is international and u can put a sim card in the phone. Is it really possible that i could use ATT on that version of the touch pro?? if i could that would be great because its my favorite version of the touch pro 2, the only one with a 3.5mm headphone jack! I just want to know if its possible. Ima check it tomorrow and see whats the deal.
Does anybody know if the sprint touch pro 2 unlocked would work on ATT?
Yea if you get the sprint touch pro unlocked it will work on att

Yes, but you need to make sure that you have the special modified radio that lets you use US SIM cards, otherwise it won't work. However, to flash that radio, I think you need to be security unlocked. You can find all the information concerning security unlocking and flashing the special Radio in the stickies at the top of the Rhodium CDMA Section.

I don't have a T-Mobile Touh Pro2, but I think I may know your problem. Have you specifically set up the data connection information for AT&T? If not try this:
Go to Start>Settings>Connections>Connections>Advanced>Select Networks>New...>
Under the General Tab, enter something like AT&T.
Under the Modem tab, tap new..., call it what you want, and select "Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)".
Access Point Name: wap.cingular
Username: [email protected]
Password: CINGULAR1
Finish that, and when you return to the previous screen, ensure that your modem connection is selected. Now go to the Proxy Settings tab, and check "This network connects to the Internet". Set the the network you just as your default network, and you're all set. Alternatively, if you have the Connection Setup icon in Start>Settings>Connections, you may be able to add AT&T that way, which would be much less work.

Cricket Questions

Hi all..
I have found and read the instructions as it relates to flashign a phone to cricket... I am an old GSM guy here, not too familiar with CDMA things... But Cricket is runnign a special this weekend where it is only $25 a month for unlimited talk & txt.. I think this would be great for my son as a cheap cell phone.. Here are my questions:
Would Cricket need to know that I flashed a phone from another carrier?
Do I need ot buy one of their phones in the first place?
Anyone who has done this in the past, I would value your input.... I am just a little lost here on this.. thanks
In CDMA technologies, the user account gets compared to the ESN of the phone that you are trying to use. Lets say that you programmed your phone (MIN, MDN, flashed PRL, etc). The tower will see all the settings from your account and it will look at the ESN as well, if all this information matches to what they have on the records, you will have no problem in using this phone with Cricket.
Why am I saying this? Because, you will have to let them know about the ESN of your new device. They need to add it to their database and under your account as well for you to be able to use it. I know that MetroPCS charges you ~$50 to do this, I am not certain about Cricket though. You may want to call them up and ask if you can have your Vogue flashed over to their system. I have read countless threads of people having flashed their Vogues to Cricket, so I guess it is possible.
Good luck!
Thanks for the reply...
Here is the issue (or question).. I live in a new "triband only" cricket market (Chicago/Milwaukee area).. I have read that, to work, the phone needs to use the 1700AWS frequency... I know in the "old" cricket areas you don;t need this... Will the Vogue work here? Sorry for all the questions.. I just don;t want to buy the phone and then not be able to use it...
According to the specs, the Vogue is only dual band (800 and 1900 MHz). You can see them here. If that is the case, then you might not be able to use it. Just check with them to be on the safe side. You can also look for people on the Cricket network on other forums and see if someone is using this device in the Chicago area. Good luck!
not sure about your city/are specifically but in Austin TX i was able to take a HTC Vogue (Sprint Touch) and fully flash it over. Phone, SMS, MMS, Data, Tethering, and I even found a guide for GPS (have not tried yet).
All works fine. They only issue I really have is that the DATA seems kinda crap at times. It says its at full EVDO/3G but sometimes i have to perform a manual disconnect/reconnect to jumpstart data again.
When I flash to a "non cricket" rom though I lose Tethering ability. Trying to find a guide on the settings myself so I can go back to NSFans 6.5 ROM.
Sorry for the bad news. Unfortunately there are no HTC phones available at this time that you can flash and have work in the Chicago area. That area is a AWS 1700 MHZ market and there are no CDMA HTC devices that support that technology. I would recommend that you purchase a cricket branded phone. If you are looking for a Windows phone take a look at Metro's line up. They have a Samsung that is tri band and WM powered. Also crickets new phone that is PDA like will be out tomorrow at cricKet Corp stores.

Sprint Evo convert to windows 6.5 HOW?????

Does anyone know how to convert a android Sprint evo ( HD2 ) to windows 6.5?
Has it been done?
All my software is windows based and I want to upgrade to HD2.
If someone can give me some direction and it has been done that would be nice. I have changed roms on my phone before but never PLATFORMS....
Can it be done?
Or do i need to buy a HD2 windows from Tmobile and unlock it?
Thanks for all the help
Chris
Step 1. Go to the Q&A board.
Step 2. Get a T-Mobile HD2.
You now have Windows Mobile 6.5!
First off.. WHY? for the love of Christ, WHY?
There is a reason why we love the Android OS, and having you come in here like that is like sitting in the wrong bleachers at a football came.. make sure you were a helmet and some pads, cuz its gonna be a beating. hehe

seriously, give Android a try.......I guarantee you wont be sorry
What software issues are you having? There is basically an Android version out of anything you could find on WinMo, and quite honestly it probably works better in Android.
WinMo 6 is how many years old now? You should definitely give Android a shot, as long as you download the right apps, you shouldn't have a compatibility issue.
Hopefully windows Phone 7 will be ported over to the Evo that would be sweet. I'm an Ex windows phone guy myself and will probably be going back once a device with nice specs catches me eye. So a port to play with will enjoying some android would be nice

No, GSM definitely wont work on Sprint. Your TP2 only has a sim card for roaming purposes only. The HD2 has no CDMA (Sprint) compatibility.

No... The HD2 will NOT work on Sprint! There will NEVER be a port of Windows 6.5 on the EVO; there would be Windows Phone 7 if anything. If you have AT&T coverage in your area you can always get an UNLOCKED HD2 and use it on AT&T. I did this for a short time and it worked great. If you want 3G coverage on AT&T's 850mhz band you can get a TELSTRA version of the HD2 off ebay that will work on 3G ("i did this").

[Q] Difference between G2 and DZ

I have read for a while and I have found nothing that will make me 100% sure for what I need.
I'm interested in buying this phone as it's similar to the Sprint Evo Shift but will work with the new GSM network my carrier has with HSPA+ (at least for 7.2mbps as far as I've read).
So, I know the DZ will work as my carrier uses 850/1900 for HSPA, but I've seen that people with AT&T in the US buy the DZ (not the G2 as T-Mobile uses other frequencies).
My question is, what's finally the difference between both phones? Is there a hardware difference that makes them operate on different frequencies or is it only related to the flashed radio?
It's confusing to me as many people in the forum assure in other threads that the phones are exactly the same, but if people with AT&T spend more for the canadian version makes me think it's a HW issue.
Thank you and regards
Frequency compatibility is set in hardware, and can't be modified with software. You need to buy the phone that is compatible with your carrier's 3G network. As you suspected, this is the reason why AT&T customers (like myself) have paid premium prices for the Bell Canada version of the Z, the only version of the Vision that is fully compatible with AT&T's 850/1900 MHz 3G network.
Aside from frequency compability, the Z and the G2 are essentially the same phone. The G2 has a keyboard button for .www and .com (its a Tab key on the Z). But that's really it. Of course, the Z has Sense, but that is software, and you can flash a Sense ROM if you want.
redpoint73, thank you very much. I have the Evo Shift right now that works on the 3G CDMA network, but my provider just released the 4G HSPA+ GSM network and since then, I feel 3G speeds are getting lower every day and the network isn't as stable anymore as it used to be.
I was about to buy the T-Mobile version, but now I'm confident that I need the Bell version... Will have to wait for a good deal on Ebay. Too bad that HTC has only these options with keyboard, I really like my Evo Shift, but I'm getting speeds as low as 380kbps for download while users with HSPA+ are getting up to 4mbps...
Are you sure that GSM phones even work on Sprint? My understanding is that the your phone needs to be Sprint branded, otherwise they will not have an ESN number to activate in the system.
BTW, please click the "Thanks" button, if my post helped you.
No, I'm in Mexico, my carrier is Iusacell. They used to be a CDMA network, the first 3G network in Mexico built more than 10 years ago, most of us used to buy Sprint phones as they were the best to port to this company, however now they are starting their GSM network and it looks as if they're starting to leave the CDMA network out of the priority, so I'm looking for a phone that will work. I have done my research and they use the 850/1900 frequencies for HSPA+, so most US/Canada phones will work but not T-Mobile.
Thank you...

Ahh, I understand now. That makes a lot more sense. You didn't mention your carrier (or country), but mentioned Sprint, so I assumed that was your carrier.
Right now, it seems that indeed the Bell Canada version of the Desire Z is best fit for what you want (same conclusion that I came to a few months ago).
Redpoint, don't forget the partitions are different on the phone also. The DZ has smaller partitions (system at least) than the G2. This hasn't been an issue... yet, given than every custom so far has been well below the stock size of even the DZ. With the new sense though, things are going to only go up in size for those ROMs. That being said it still shouldn't be an issue.

Hard for me to forget it, since I wasn't aware of that :-/
Whats the exact breakdown of the difference in system partitions?
That's actually opposite of what one would expect, since the Sense ROMs take up more memory.
Yes, I hadn't mentioned my carrier earlier. Now my issue is that shipping from Canada to Mexico is prohibitive (more than 90USD), so maybe I will have to stay with the AT&T inspire... Will have to use Swype or something similar as an alternative to the physical keyboard.

I was going to recommend the Inspire, even though you seemed to need/want a physical keyboard. It looks like a great phone.
The Desire Z is my 3rd smartphone, and all have had physical keyboards. But for my next, I am seriously considering going without the physical keyboard. I can't stand typing on a touch screen by the "traditional" method. But I've found that with Swype, I can type as fast, maybe even faster than with the physical keyboard. I've been finding myself using the physical keyboard much less than I thought I would.
Yes, I really like Swype too, but I have some issues with it. I write moste messages in Spanish, but I also use English and German. Changing languages is not as easy as I think it should be. But well, the main issue for me is that Swype always uses special charecters in Spanish/German (ñ, á, ä, etc.) which is nice on Emails, whatsapp, etc. but is a big problem with SMS texting as carriers in Mexico don't support these characters (it's really stupid) so messages sometimes get messed up completely.
I think that's the main reason why I like the physical keyboard. I have had many smartphones (mogul, touch, diamond, touch pro, motorola droid, htc evo and now the evo shift). I really hated the droid's keyboard, but the shift is really nice to use. Will have to get used to using on screen typing again... I think it's not worth paying 500 bucks for the Desire Z due to shippig if I can get a brand new Inspire for less...

Hard for me to forget it, since I wasn't aware of that :-/
Whats the exact breakdown of the difference in system partitions?
That's actually opposite of what one would expect, since the Sense ROMs take up more memory.

Sorry, didn't come back to this thread yesterday. I'm not sure of the exact breakdown for the partitions. I know the system is smaller and a couple others vary. There's an old thread somewhere on here with the details though.
