Guys, DO you think HTC have resolve the soft speaker that is on the Nexus One?
Hopefully, HTC improved the speaker fidelity in Desire or used a better speaker brand in Desire... Doesn't make sense that HTC used a lousy speaker for the Nexus One for an expensive phone..
Yeah i would like to have an answer for this too, as i have Touch Diamond now and the quality of the speaker is very, very poor.. This was only only thing which made me think should i buy desire or not, if the speaker is not good in desire either, i will wait till next year or buy nokia or something worse..
Hate to be the bearer of bad news guys but the speaker on the desire is crap! Real shame for such a high end phone.

Just took a phonecall from the missy over the loudspeaker. Could barely understand her. Its not that good.
I feel that in a phonecall the earpiece is fine but if you are using it handsfree or playing music it's pretty gash.

If you don't use full volume it's allright. But at some point it's not that good anymore.
I don't care. I never use the speaker, and when the phone rings it's more than loud enough. If I want good sound quality, I will never use a phone speaker.. ever..
Very disappointed that HTC couldn't manage to get a decent speaker (unlike the iPhone). It's not a show stopper for me but it's still not good for an otherwise high-spec phone.
The sound quality (via speaker) is quite frankly atrocious, whether it's for calls or music. I'm keeping my 3GS to use as an iPod.
What bets that speaker fidelity will be one of the features apple have focused on for the new iPhone, given their iTunes market.
Absolutely love my Desire (proud owner for about 10 hours). HArdware and software very impressive. Yet to find out about the battery life.
aww man, this is disappointing, I would expect HTC could have at least improve their speakers... I have notice that most of their phones really have crap speakers, what gives!!! even my old nokia phone beats any of their lines hands down..
The speaker is half decent, battery life - crap. Other things make up for it, though.

I'm guessing the fact they are squeezing so much processing power and screen into the thing, and the battery to power it. Speaker space wasn't such a premium a few years back.
Coming from a Touch HD, the speaker is 10x better. I have had no problems hearing alerts in noisy environments. Music sounds pretty good for being a single tiny speaker. I think it's as good as iPhone speakers.

Nope.
iPhone sounds like a boombox compared to the Desire.
And it's only through a 4 mm hole.
I've compared the Desire speaker to my Samsung Omnia HD: the Desire clearly lacks bass. Although the Omnia HD speakers sound muffled in comparison.
I guess there's no perfect speaker on cell phones.

There is no way that HTC Desire speaker match the speaker on iPhone 3GS.
I have both and it’s pretty obvious that the speaker in iPhone 3GS is much better than Desire's.
Anyway, for me, that’s the only thing that iPhone 3GS is better than Desire.
It's got a headphone jack, I'm quite happy to plug my little portable Sony speakers into that. I just cycled home from work and had forgot my headphones.. so had my favourite dancehall reggae mix playing through the loudspeaker in my pocket, it sounded fine, even full blast. Agreed nothing to write home about but it aint bad.
Will post again when I can test it for handsfree.
sounds like the trebble is too high and the base is too low, thats if there is anything in there that does base lol
testing with sound on computer, when you set the equalizer to full treble, it sounds like something close to what comes out of the desire, if there was a way to play around with the equalizer settings the quality may be improved?
So, there is nothing wrong specifically with my handset? I was thinking about returning it.
When I hear calls using phone's default speaker, the sound comes okay till one volume level. If I move up, the sound distorts.
If I use speaker-phone, things are worse. After a certain level, sound crackles a lot.
For music via phone's loud speaker, the sound doesn't crackle. But as identified by many, I can hear music with no bass & lots of treble.
Is this normal for Desire?
Comparing it with my wife's N95 (which has stereo speakers) was a nightmare for me.
My UK T-mob desire has a very quiet headphone out on it. It's not too bad with actually using headphones but it's noticeably quiet when I use it as a line-out jack into a stereo - it's just too quiet. I could live with it just for headphone use but it sounds pretty dire using line out.
Anyone know if this is a software thing or hardware? Seen some people posting about speakerphone volume issues, which I don't know if it's related.
Is this a T-mob rom thing? Is it EU max-volume restriction? Is the hardware at fault?
It's a bit of a disappointment as it stands as my phone is my main music player..
There won't be a definite answer on this because it seems volume is a subjective thing. People will insist theirs is louder than their other players, others will agree with out.
Me, I agree with you. Coming from an iPod Touch, the max volume is about 60% of an iPod. I can hear my music but not every instrument. From the mixed bag of responses it's hard to pin down if it's hardware or software. Judging by the fact previous Android phones have needed volume hacks I'd assume it's a software issue, but because volume is subjective and some people insist whispers are painful to their eardrums you won't see much action.
aw, crap. I'm comparing iphone output directly to this, on the very hi-fi but low sensitivity amp and speakers I have in the kitchen. It's no-where near line level, which could be easily verified. Sounds like I put up or go back to the iPhone. And I'm on a new 2 year contract with the desire. Arse. It sounds OK on my Sennheiser earbuds - won't go quite as loud as iPhone, but it's loud enough - it's the lack of a line level out that's irritating, particularly as there's no dock connector that could be used to extract one...

i actually find the volume a bit higher than my sony walkman.. i guess its what your used to .. some headphones will be easier to drive than others.. so it will appear to be louder with certain headphones

No, I actually do think some people got louder units than others. The "detailed" post above from A|ex is the problem. Too many people have assumed the volume levels on all the Desires is the same so they're arguing the relative merits of loud volume over low. I think people with normal sounding units are basically clouding the issue because they're satisfied.
Too many people have complained about the low volume for it to be a coincidence. I don't ever hear such complaints about iPods (issues with sound quality aside).
I will say this...this is the lowest sounding volume I have ever had on any device. It's not my imagination and it's not that I had my other devices too high. Even if it is that, say I had all my devices cranked up to 10 which is too loud, why is 10 on this phone where 4 is on every other phone?

exactly, it's not subjective in my case, it's demonstrably quieter when compared back-to-back with the same media played on a device with line-level out. it sounds OK on headphones as I don't need it ear-bleedingly loud but it sounds like ass hooked up to my stereo.
Am wondering wether to go back to the store and see if another unit is any differnt, but without taking a DB meter with me (actually, I have an app for that on my old iphone!) it's giong to be tricky to persuade them either way.
I've spent my life messing about with AV / recording / studio bits in an amateur fashion and this device is *quiet*
hi mate - wasnt implying your imagining it.. must be a problem with some units then as i can say on mine.. the volume is as loud or louder than most of the portable audio devices i have owned over the years and there's been quite a few!

No, no...not you personally, I was referring to that post A|ex linked to above you. It's infuriating. From helpful hints to "turn the volume up" to anecdotal tales of the volume being TOO loud for their tastes. It's as if some people decided to be as unhelpful as possible.

just been into t-mob store. guy who sold me mine has one and is technical - his does it. he thought it might be an EU-directive software limit. not particularly convinced this is useful information, but there you go.
It may be that. I distinctly remember that a few years ago when I owned a Creative Mp3 player I had to download and install the US firmware to get decent volume due to EU restrictions.

I can only speak for myself... It's the lowest sounding volume in any of my mobile devices since 2003 without a doubt. I have vids and audio on full volume around just 2 people nattering normally and I still can't make out the words (of slow speeches), headphone or loudspeaker [yet I have very sensitive and refined hearing, usually always on volume 1-3 on other devices around people]. Same piece on Nokia N95 only requires volume 40% to listen to with ease and clarity. My family and friends who have all heard the comparatives agree fully.

Ok, I'm on my second Desire now, still from T-Mobile. Sound is still low on headphones and hissy through speaker. I bought an unlocked Hero (for 120gbp I might add ;-) ) and compared the same song through headphones and speaker and the difference is incredible. Much louder output through Hero and greater clarity and depth to sound. I also have a standard iPhone 3G and I'm sad to report that the Desire's external speaker quality is LAUGHABLE in comparison.
Can HTC not release a device with no heartbreaking caveats?
I got a musical Christmas card last year with better musical fidelity than my Desire; perhaps I could swap the speakers???
testing results
I had the opportunity today to compare my T-Mobile Desire headphones output volume to an Orange Desire output. With the same track the T-Mobile device at full volume was equal to the Orange device at 3 clicks below full volume.
I'd already phoned T-Mobile for a new device which is arriving tomorrow. I expect it'll have the same problem, which if it does will help confirm that it is a T-Mobile ROM issue. If so I'll reflash it to the generic ROM.
you bloody legend. or desire, even. great news, can you post back if t-mob number two is the same?
correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't it impossible to flash these until root's been done? i do like the htc sense rom and extras compared to the nexus but i'm mad keen to get this fixed as the phone's only partially useful to me without it.

I just debranded a T-Mobile UK desire for my bro-in-law and after debanding the headphone volume was twice as loud as before or should I say was as loud as my sim free desire . The lesson to be learnt here is debrand your phone whos wants T-Mobile crap all over it anyway .
OK, I'm sold. What ROM do you flash, and how? Never flashed an android handset before (done millions of WinMo ones though!) and do you lose anything - e.g. all the HTC sense stuff.
I remember doing my old HTC Wizard and removing the stock t-mob ROM with the Mr Clean ROM - easily twice as fast afterwards.
Go on, give me some pointers to research and I'll do it tomorrow.

I listen to a lot of music on my phone as I don't carry ipod everywhere..read review on gsmarena.com that desire has the top in class music output very similar to xperia x10 (with headphones) assuming same hardware on nexus and desire..
1) do both nexus and desire have good audio output for music listening via headphones?
2) read a few articles on nexus one speaker being very low and has music distortion at highest volume..does desire have such similar problems..

I don't really like the speaker. Doesn't really go that loud and there's a little distortion. However with inear headphones I really like the music quality. Haven't had anything to compare it with, I just know I'm satisfied with it. Hope that helps.

anyone saying the rear speaker of the desire was good would surely be the overstatement of the decade. all my phones of the last decade would beat it hollow. even my archos 605 media player at half volume would beat it hollow. but it is better now after froyo. i have 2 desire phones btw so it is not the phone that is faulty, it is a crap speaker and software as situation improved after froyo for me, so cant just be a hardware issue. i never ever had to use max volume in anyother phone i had, even half volume on my archos 605 media player was too much but the desire leaves a lot to be desired where its speakers are concerned.
Well, after lurking XDA for about six months, I finally actually need to post about something. Also please note that I am not an audiophile by any means, I just listen to music a lot.
I have owned a Desire since its Australian launch, and it is unequivocally the best phone I have used since the venerable Nokia N95.
I also have an iPhone 3GS provided by my benevolent employer, which in general I don't particularly like.
There is only one thing about the iPhone that is going to make it hurt to give it back to my employer when I leave at the end of this month. Audio volume.
Specifically, when I have my Desire connected to an external amplifier such as the car stereo (a daily occurence) or the stereo in my loungeroom, while it sounds pretty good, it cannot match the iPhone for volume, or the general 'meatiness' of the sound, and in the car it means I have to turn the stereo's volume up way higher than I do compared to when I use the iPhone, while still not getting sound of the same quality.
I have looked at the Dell Streak based on positive comments about its audio quality, and I will buy one in a heartbeat if I can establish that its sound is noticeably louder and or better than the Desires.
My question is: Which Android phones have the best audio quality when connected to an external amp, and can any match the iPhone?
Or has anyone used both the Desire and the Streak for external audio that can give some feedback?
I have tried GSMArena, but their technical measurements of audio quality mean nothing to me.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Of all my phones so far, the only one that even comes close to matching if not exceeding the iPhones audio quality is the Samsung Galaxy S.
I have the exact same experience with my Desire. What helped me greatly was to install the music player PowerAmp, which is in the market. On the equalizer settings page increase the preamp slider to the point before it starts to distort. I still need to crank the volume a bit in my car but it's much better than before. The bass, treble & EQ also work very well. Hope this helps.

currently I am a LG G3 user but I am considering to switch to the newest HTC One, the M8.
My girlfriend just received her M8 Mini (One Mini 2) and I am pretty jealous because HTC's sound is just awesome.
I already got an offer to exchange my G3 vs a M8. But I've got one question before I exchange.
Is the phone rootable, bootloader unlockable and are there already soundmods to push the volume? I don't know if the Mini 2 is quieter than the M8, but in comparison to my G3 the Mini 2 is pretty quiet. I want to receive loud music without distortion just as on my G3.

Are you talking about headphone volume? Can't speak of the One Mini, but on the M8 there is no need to tweak the volume. At about 2/3 volume, its feels loud enough to cause hearing damage. Specific source material and headphones may make some difference. But this thing is plenty loud.

My girlfriend already told me that the volume on the headphones are freaking loud
But I meant the built-in speakers. My G3 is waaay louder than the One Mini 2. And if the M8 is as loud as the One Mini 2, I want to apply some tweaks to it, to become as loud as my G3. On the G3 it's just editing one file and et voila. All I want to know is, if there's a way to turn up the volume on the M8's built-in speakers. ^^

I don't know the G3 so can't compare. I find my M8 speakers to be very good and very loud. Way better and louder than my previous iPhone 4S... I don't see any need to have the volume any higher on my M8.

The speakers are as loud as you could expect out of a phone.
It's almost as loud as my laptop.
I simply used viper4android and it did the work. The sound quality was just so awesome on the HTC that I'm missing it on my z2.
