Its world cup month so my question is.. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are their any programs that allows me to stream the footy on bbc and ITV?
man i just saw my mate with a nexus one streaming it in his web browser and it was smooth as silk!! his running android 2.2 though with flash built in but our devices dont have flash!!!

http://yamgo.mobi should do you

Pretty sure there is. My provider (Optus) sent me an SMS today saying live streaming of the Fifa World Cup was free for Optus customers over mobile.

Where was he watching it? Every time I've tried watching a flash video on froyo its been like a watching a slideshow.
tvcatchup.com works on the iPhone (any freeview channel live), but not on android
That other link works though, pretty awful quality but it works

No different to watching ITV via freeview on a normal tv then?

Thanks, I hadn't tried itv player yet. It's definitely far better than any other flash video I've tried so far, doesn't seem very choppy at all! The sound is out of sync with lips tho :/ but that doesn't matter when watching the football I guess

The guess have got it working on 2.1 HTC Desire, watch over WiFi, great quality.

Got it working now. However, keep getting a weak signal notification and then the pic stops whilst the audio continues!
Anyone else finding this?

It's made my weekend already, now an England win tomorrow and that'll be the icing on the cake !!!

Got HDMI cable. Dreams shattered =(

Only thing you can do with this piece of wire is play baseline-h264/MP4 and view a photo slideshow and even that works only when it wants. Where's the cyanogen's promise of full UI output to HDMI (his ROM doesnt even *support* HDMI, lol)? Why advertise watching videos on your big TV if you can't play anything (AVI/MKV/etc) besides crappy baseline mp4 even though they all play perfectly fine on-screen using vPlayer/RockPlayer... the only good thing I can say about this cable is it was just $5, shipping included
Supports HDMI:
Stock Video Player
Stock Gallery (slideshow only)
Youtube
NHL
Jetflicks (uses stock video player?)
...
So is this with all ROMs? It seems from what I've been reading the HDMI is pretty much useless, is this correct? I was thinking of picking up a cable just to test it out but what's the point if I can't play other types of videos?
And where might I ask did you get your cable from?

Cyanogen doesn't claim that CM supports HDMI output, but that it's a future goal, as is full WiMax support. Learn to read. The biggest problem facing jeagoss (the guy who's doing the dev work on HDMI) is that the EVO's GPU sucks, and overheats whenever he gets mirroring to work.
As for other ROMs? Well, like you saw, just the stock ones have selective video output. The CM team is/will be/has been working on HDMI, it's only a matter of time until they get mirroring and/or a wide selection of video output via HDMI.
With rumbaed post like the OP's is probably the reason cm team hasn't put a rush on it. Why is their name even coming up in this post unless you were asking info about his rom, which the OP clearly was not.
I have a feeling wewon't be seeing a release until the Evo has a successor. They are going to have their hands full with all the new, more powerful phones. We aren't that far away from the next big Sprint launch if there is one.

until CM or maybe some other ROM gets full UI mirroring and/or any-video-format playback on HDMI my cable will be just sitting there collecting dust... until then, i have my fingers crossed that this happens sooner than later

Another ROM won't get it because nobody else is working on it. Everyone else is either satisfied with it not working, or the limited output that Sense has. Jeagoss is pretty much the only person working on this right now, and he just got out of the hospital from what I hear, which is why there hasn't been any updates in a while on the subject.
Besides, like I said before, the EVO's GPU is crap, and the last time Jeagoss got mirroring to work, the phone literally COOKED. If you want an example, plug in your phone, turn on wifi, GPS, bluetooth, WiMax, maximum screen brightness, and run Wardrive while connected to WiMax for about say... 30-60 minutes. You'll feel what "cooking" is like.
Myn's 2.2 RLS5 ROM
I'm using the Sense based Myn's ROM. I have my EVO connected now via a cheap Ebay HDMI cable (like $5 or $6) on my 47" LCD watching videos I downloaded and the video and audio are perfect. In fact the video is even better than basic cable signals coming in through my HDMI connected Tivo.
CM ROMs have never yet been able to support 4G or HDMI. They are in the works so hopefully soon. If you check the Android Development section there is a new Alpha WiMax mod available but is very unstable.
MIUI ROMs are nice but they too do not support 4G or HDMI.
I got a cable for $3 from monoprice

So what type of video files are you watching and what app are you using to watch them? I thought you could only use the stock video player which doesn't support Avi files

You need to use a site that plays the media using the stock HTC media player, and HDMI out will work. Mediamp4.com streams using the stock media player. Depending on the quality of the upload and your internet speed, some of the movies look really good with the HDMI out. It's a matter of finding which sites work with the stock media player and which don't. I'm sure there are plenty more out there.
P.S. Xshare.com works with HDMI out. Nothing shows off how cool your phone is like streaming porn and HDMI-ing that out to the fellas. lol
I believe Youtube videos, the stock media player and the streaming player all output vie the hdmi. It's actually kind of neat at parties to play music videos and watching full length movies that are being streamed from sites like iphonemoviez.
edited OP with a list of known apps that utilize HDMI on our phones. so far i know and have tested 3 (stock video player, gallery's slideshow, and youtube)... are there any apps/functions that can make use of HDMI out?

Updated the OP? Well, there's something you don't see everyday. I had forgotten to mention that the YouTube app works, too. I think that's it, though. I can tell you the Slingplayer app doesn't work. I still love my SlingBox, but I wish the HDMI would work. That would be awesome at work! lol
RockPlayer plays avi and many other files while allowing hdmi output. I think it might be the app you are looking for.

I watch NHL games via hdmi out and the NHL app on 4g.

driving like a maniac while posting on xda atm, lol
For everyone that wants to play movies with HDMI out go to the market and check out a app called jetflicks the app is 1.99 and you do have to pay 50 a year but its worth the money . You get alot of great shows just go check it out !

Lazyworm YouTube 2.0 does HQ over 3G!

This is huge for non-HTC WP7 devices. The latest Lazyworm YouTube app does proper HQ video over 3G. Very nice!
Already available on RealTube and SuperTube...no big deal...and you can always sideload the debranded HTC Youtube app on your phone...
But yes, for the general masses, this is great news...
UPDATE: I take back what I said. This new version is REALLY GOOD! The quality is still only at 480p level, even with HQ, but the features, and the UI alone make this a must have download...
Still, should have SuperTube for 720p and downloads...
The framerate of full-screen videos is very poor with this new version. The Microsoft YouTube app and the HTC YouTube app don't have this problem.

Indeed, the quality of SuperTube or RealTube is really better unfortunately (especially over 3G).
And with SuperTube you can also download.
I hope the video quality can be improved, because the UI of LazyTube is very nice.
Would anyone care to elaborate the benefit of a 720p over a 480p video on a 800x480 screen?

We actually know how to implement video download however we are a little reluctant to release this feature in fear of future ramifications (to our understanding it breaches YT terms of service).
Having said that, Microsoft don't seem to mind and if it's going to be held against us by the public we may be forced to support it.
With regards to video stream quality, expect to see the full range added into the next LazyTube update so please stay tuned !
Thanks guys.
Thank you very much LazyWormsApps for this message.
I bought LazyTube today and must say I really like it.
Compared to RealTube or SuperTube the search engine is far more efficient and the results are more relevant.

I don't have any decent recording equipment only my HD2, though I assure you that it is working flawlessly, I've just been playing it for 10 mins with no stuttering what so ever. Only fault is some of the text is rather small but that's just obviously a resolution compatibly issue rather than a performance one. Are there any other graphics intense games/programs you'd like me to test?

The one I got rid of had dead pixels so it was being exchanged by the network and that is the one I did the scratch test on because I didn't care what the network thought due to the way they pissed me around. The replacement which I am contracted to, I still have.

Anything you'd recommend mate?
And do you think the videos I have mentioned look bad due to them not being optimized?
What I can't understand is why the i4 videos are so stunning clear yet these aren't when there isn't much PPI difference
that's the problem of the super HD devices
regular videos optimized for the web are too low quality for the phone
you will need at least videos optimized for 480 if not 720 for it to look good
so in youtube you need to select 480 if 720 is not available
that means you will also eat a lot more DATA if you are on 3G / 4G
this is one of the many reason why GN wasn't so appetizing to me
specially when 3G & 4G networks are not as fast as they advertise them to be

As for YouTube are you watching from the browser or the app itself?
I compared an HD video in the youtube app between the Galaxy Nexus and the SGS2 and the Nexus wins hands down... the detail is far superior because of the newer youtube app on the nexus. When the SGS2 gets ICS and/or the same youtube app as the nexus then maybe it'll be closer.
For large MKV files the SGS2 will win because samsung supplies codecs to view almost any video you throw at it, where as the nexus is constrained by the codecs that AOSP supports, which isn't nearly as expansive.
I have no clue what the **** the OP is talking about.
Check out the 2012 trailer in HD (should be the first in YouTube when searching for "HD 2012 trailer"). And make sure it actually has the "HD" icon in the vid list when you get your search results.
There is a little frame stutter... but hell, my $2000 i5 + ATI 6990 triple monitor gaming system also has frame stutter with YouTube (nature of FLV). The clarity on the other hand actually surprised me. It's just as good if not completely equal to 1080p MP4 videos (like Kanye's 'Lights') which also play awesome.

What do you guys use to play MKVs?
The SGS2 has its own codecs, when I used other ROMs I would use Moboplayer.
But Moboplayer won't download any codecs on the Galaxy Nexus so it's basically useless. Next I tried Rock Player, with hardware decoding I get good video but no sound and in software decoding I get good audio but suttering video.
So what to do? Re-encoding is a pain...

[Q] Want to buy A100 for Son

Looking to buy the Iconia Tab A100 for my son. I have an Asus transformer and i love it, but wanted to get him something smaller. This tab seems to be a nice one. I wanted to make sure of the following things.
1) Movies work (avi)
2) Netflix works (without root)
3) any good "kid type" case reccomendations?
Thanks for help
Hello friend! I will do my best to provide relevant answers to your questions!
1) Most movies do work! Even in resolutions of 720p and 1080p. Of course, not all video files are encoded correctly. There can be wide degrees of variation in quality between video files; trying to play a 1080p avi movie file with an extremely high bitrate (much like how MP3s are in 128 kilobytes per second(kbps), 192kbps, 256kbps, 320kbps etc) will cause stuttering and jittery playback. But the Tegra 2 platform can play 1080p content. Perhaps an SD card with high read speeds could remedy this (or using SD-Booster to bolster the read-ahead value of the SD card) but I am not certain, as I have not extensively tested this.
2) Netflix works, albeit a bit jittery in operation (i.e. browsing instant play selections) but video works great. Being rooted does not affect its operation.
3) I have not looked into kid-friendly accessories, but browsing Amazon's selection of A100 accessories may yield a nice prize.
And by the way, I am selling my own Iconia A100 tablet.
Cheers!
