Hello,
Just discovered that flash has stopped working on BBC web site + others. Message on site says flash 10. 1 is available for Android 2. 2 check to see if your device is compatable. What's going on? Is it my phone or is everyone the same? Was working earlier today. Only thing I've done is download Spare Part from the market. Help would be much appreciated.
You have Android 2.1 or flashed a 2.2 ROM?
Anyway, it could very well be they implemented a check on the website. And they now check for a certain version to be available. And so you are now getting this message.
I mean, once they put that new check online you can't see stuff anymore .
Dunno if spare parts has anything to do with it. Does spare parts do anything with Flash then? If so, I never noticed it before.
Running standard 2. 1, but there's another post, so not just me! Spare part was the only change I'd made since it was working
I posted about this too. wimp.com flash video stopped playing too. It's not the website, I think something in the phone has changes since the firmware update for me. thats when I first noticed it. booooooo
I updated over a week ago & its been fine until last night. So come on HTC, give us Froyo now!

That's because the BBC iPlayer supplies H264 streams to the iPhone - nothing to do with Flash!
I suspect that many flash sites are moving to Flash 10.1 now that it has finally left beta.
Regards,
Dave
Yep, it has stopped working. Confirmed. And Dave's suggestion is the most likely reason.
This is a good move... I hope they all move to it fast. I can only imagine HTC speeding up the Froyo release due to it. As Flash is a big deal for this phone to every customer.

better release it, or i'll be pissed... I went for the Desire for Sense UI, i'll be damned with the web experience goes south and then no update.

We bought Desire in faith we will soon get full flash support, DivX and 720p recording. Currently we have nothing, now even flash doesn't work anymore. If we won't get update soon, I guess I will have to buy something else, and I doubt I will return back to HTC soon...

Is there going to be an upgrade for the desire ?
Would love that ! (Flash)
Any body got some info ?
of course will be, the question is when?
thats quick ....
Are we talking months or weeks untill 'droid 2.2 comes out
The internet is being a bit tight lipped.
The deisre is lovely, but not finished yet.
flash is nice, divx is vital and 720p video is something I wsan't expecting...
How are we going to get it when its released?
Will it be a user ROM style hardware flash through PC sync or will i just download a file to my phone, click go and 10minutes later my phone is amazing??
(i'm having fun wiping smug faces of iphone owning freinds as they ask what phone I have and i show them, then tell them I've got it for £15/mnth )
you'll get it here on XDA as usual. ready to be flashed on your device as any other ROM
2.2 aka Froyo: maybe next week!!!
I read this on engadget:
Engadget's post about Froyo
I don't really want to root my phone as it's I think really good as it is but I wouldn't say no to Froyo! especially since it apparently boosts performance a lot!
Quote form Engadget: "Update: How much faster is a Nexus One running Froyo? 450 percent faster, according to the Android Police. They claim to have a device running the as-yet-unreleased firmware that can perform over 37 million floating-point operations per second in the Linpack benchmark... compared to about 7 megaflops without. Oh yeeaaah."
As soon as a Froyo rom leaks, people will rip it apart and mod it to hell to get it to run on all kinds of devices. I'm sure we'll see Paul make a 2.2 Desire ROM, for example and now that HTC has released the Kernel source code, it should be easier to port existing quality roms like Cyanogenmod to the device. They'll all require root access to flash as they're unofficial roms. HTC will probably eventually port Froyo themselves, but that will probably take months.
Still, 2.2 hasn't shown up yet, so no dice. We'll have to wait until google I/O before that happens
it's going to be loooong till HTC themselves release it..but as soon as its out for nexus we'll see it here on xda in no time!
If you don't want to root & use a cooked ROM I wouldn't count on having it earlier than 6 months from now.
HTC needs to change Sense UI for Android 2.2 and looking at the Hero, which STILL does not have 2.1 I wouldn't expect it to be quick.

Oh don't be so dramatic. I could fit loads on mine just fine. And i rooted and installed apps2sd anyway. Don't get any Android phone if you expect to be able to install millions of apps.

Months?? Seeing how things are going with the hero, I'd say they'll release it to the desire once the 2.3 is out. So better think of it as next year.
IMO Desire's owners are very important for HTC, since we are buying their flagship phones. I think they must keep us satisfied, if not, we will buy different phone next time. And I won't be happy if Nexus One owners will get 2.2 and we will not.
BTW isnt the evo 4g an Android 2.2 phone quz 2.1 didn't support 4g correct me if im wrong but if it is the update for the desire wont cost them so much time to port.

Froyo should include A2SD, but who knows when HTC comes up with the 2.2 upgrade for Desire.
this is true...however should b fairly quick its the flag ship Android mobile can't see another 4release in conjunction with 2.2 release

Isn't the whole point of 2.2(FroYo) that the Android segmentation is abolished and that we would be downloading Sense UI from the market.
If this is true we should all expect 2.2 the moment it is released as it will be a generic, basic Google ROM, then we would just have to wait for HTC to update Sense for 2.2 and we would be able to download that and off we go!
I am not sure if I am correct but this is the way I understood Android to be going.
i am actually, kinda scared of rooting im not 100% sure but seen somwhere a news bout release being sometime in the summer may-june think it was
I'm of those waiting... unless I can find a quick, simple and automated way of backing up and restoring everything about my current phone fast, it 'ain't happening until I see 2.2.
Many other reasons... including too many unknowns, unsubstantiated unclears, bricking not being an option for me in these months and so forth.

Dont bank on HTC being quick to update the Desire. They dont have a tradition of updating their top models any faster than their lower models, and we all know how slow they are with those!
That is the big deal. Android 2.2 will come maybe next month, but when HTC 'come' with their update, who knows...

The big difference here is the existence of the Nexus One, which will get an update pretty much straight away.
Since the Desire is very close hardware wise to the Nexus One, I'd hope that it wouldn't take too long to "Sensify" 2.2 and get an update out to Desire users. Failing that, if you're rooted, they'll be cooked 2.2 Nexus ROMs out for the Desire in fairly short order.

Dave
I was waiting, but ended up rooting tonight. I reckon SetCPU alone was worth rooting for.

Actually, SetCPU will have no effect when running on rooted Desires.
When I pull the sliders across, it seems to have no effect, and the green max and min frequencies remain unchanged. HTC has a driver that they implement which keeps overriding SetCPU. We need to hope they (HTC) release the Kernel source. Once this happens, there will surely be a release of a modified Kernel with SetCPU support and overclocking/undervolting (assuming the CPUs in the Desire are binned the same way as the CPUs in the Nexus, this should yield a 10% overclock and better battery life).
Problem is HTC is really slow in releasing the source, it's borderline, illegal, and very irritating.

I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but my sliders seem to work fine. The widget display claims my speeds are scaling too, and my battery life seems remarkably improved, though that could be due to running the MCR. I don't know.
[EDIT] I see what you mean about the sliders now. Battery life still seems better though?

See I thought this was the whole point of FroYo. We all get the basic Google Rom (maybe with a few service provider tweaks) then we download UI of our choice from the market.
Apart from service providers having to mess around with the Rom there's no reason why we should be waiting for months to get it. Most people in this thread seem to give the impression that we won't see 2.2 for ages while HTC upgrade Sense(I assume there's a few ex-hero users in here). This isn't true though, we'll be running 2.2 and waiting for a download of sense via the market. yeah?

Can I ask why you think this? I reckon we'll get 2.2 the same time as the Nexus . If everything I've read about 2.2 is correct then Sense will just be released to the market when it's updated for us to download.
am I really wrong or the only person in this thread who understands what's going on with 2.2?
Hi All, Im a Flash Developer and want to get a phone for FLash mobile dev. I cant get the Nexus One where I live (South Africa) but we can get the Desire.
So my question is this, will the HTC Desire get the Froyo upgrade as soon as the Nexus One does?
Does anyone know how the Flash Player for mobile be rolled out? I can t find anything on it anywhere.
also interested in an answer to this... I know the Desire rom has been ported to the N1 but has the reverse been done and if not is it possible.
Very close to buying a Desire for it optical controller and slightly upgrade RAM but would like the option of moving to a fully functional Android 2.2 if HTC take ages releasing their own update (which is inevitable!)

Going by HTCs previous form, almost certainly not, though given how new the Desire is I would hope that HTC already have plans for an upgrade in the pipeline.
As I see it, the biggest issue with getting any form of Froyo onto the Desire is that we will need a 2.6.32 kernel.
Currently, HTC have not released the kernel source for the Desire, which makes it pretty much impossible for anyone to port the Desire specific parts of 2.6.29 to 2.6.32.
Given that the Nexus One and the Desire are very similar, it is likely that their aren't too many differences in the kernel source, but the current lack of the code for the Desire means we just don't know.
Regards,
Dave
Flash Player
Im happy to run 2.1 on the Desire, but I'm really getting it for Flash.
So does anyone know how Flash will be installed on the OS? Will it come with the update or will it come as an application that one can install?
Maybe HTC aint released the kernal for this very reason, that they dont want people to port over 2.2 from N1 ROM update.
According to a user in a german forum, HTC will release an update to 2.2 one month later: http://translate.google.de/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.android-hilfe.de%2F307474-post57.html&sl=de&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8
I hope it's true
As far as I know Adobe will release Flash for Android in multiple ways and one of them is through the Android Market for all compatible devices.
So even if the Desire wouldn't get 2.2 for some time, Flash 10.1 should be available for the Desire from start (as HTC has marketed the Desire being Flash 10.1 ready).
Anybody got any real evidence of how this will happen?
Will be really cool if all devices get it as an install through the market but this is all still pure speculation?
Why is all this so tight lipped, we all know Flash Player is coming, why does it matter how it is coming?
Gotta love all the conjecture on these forums.
Not sure if this helps, but my desire HAS flash support. It works quite well though streaming video doesn't seem to work. Download video works most of the time (i.e. youtube etc.).
That's Flash Lite. This will be full Flash.

It will be awesome to get froy one month after its release, but since i'm also from the good old South Africa i must inform you that even if HTC releases the update we (South Africans) have to wait for leaf and our "wonderful" network operators to test it as well...thats now unless you root you phone and get a ROM from XDA
Wouldnt it be a liiiiiiitle too strange if we Desire users wont get it... I mean if u compare Nexus One with Desire ther isnt realy much difference ore am i very wrong :S
now the kernal has been released, it may be possible for them to port over the current 2.1 N1 ROM to Desire. If that works then they can do it for 2.2.

No your right except for the fact that the nexus uses googles UI (user interface) and rhe desire uses htc's Sense UI, so the qeustion is not if it will work but when will htc port it to their UI...or thats how I understand the situation.

In the spirit of actually answering the question, you won't be able to use the cam in the browser until froyo, then you should.
verified. doesn't work with the built in browser or opera.
Thanks for clearing that one up guys, I was just wondering ever since the phone's announcement. I figured, the phone's got a nice cam, with android shouldn't be a problem to achieve something like that, and it would have flash soon. So I thought why not chatroulette, since I had just started toying around with that site around the time the evo was announced. The site is a lot more interesting if you use it for purposes other than jerking off, I mean it's fun to just talk to random people. That's the whole purpose of the site anyways, if you want to jack it go get some porn, don't come on chatroulette for a good time. AT least not in that sense. Hopefully the phone will work with other sites like stickam or any other live webcam streaming sites.
Well I can confirm it doesnt work on any rom I've tried even in the stock browser with flash 10.1 installed. Hopefully they realize this and somehow can get it to work.

Thats the problem with trusting different networks for upgrades. They are a massive pain as unlocked users got it ages ago whilst the rest of us have to wait ages.
