Hi @ all
I know it wont be a 100% reliable news but I thought it would interest some of you.
A friend of mine ordered a HTC Desire at Sunrise (Swiss Operator). She was told that the delivery will be postponed to the beginning of August due to the fact that the device will be delivered with version 2.2 of Android aka Froyo.
That would mean that we could possibly get the official Froyo by the end of July for unbranded devices.
Hope the staff at Sunrise is reliable and the info is right!!!
We will know more in about one month.
Sorry if the news has already been posted before.
Sinerely,
Ascenca
Interesting
Well, HTC Customer Service reps got the date wrong for this. So I doubt that a network service provider rep has that much information.
I have a feeling your friend couldn't get a Desire because of the same problem that the Droid Incredible is facing. HTC has a shortage of AMOLED screens.
See here. http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/veri...le-shortage-due-to-amoled-production-shortage
Also, see here for a (probably) more realistic time table direct from HTC PR guy. http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-says-expect-froyo-version-sense-ui-christmas

Thanks für your reply.
I am aware of the shortage of AMOLED displays and the recent PR statement of HTC. I dont pretend my info is right, only wanted to share what I heard. Nevertheless I think August could be possible. The PR guy said that all newer devices (Desire, Legend, etc.) will get Froyo by Christmas. The HTC Desire being their top end device at the moment in Europe I assume it will get the update first. And I am quite sure that they wont provide the update to all devices at the same time. So lets hope for it to be true .

There's no timetable there at all - it just says that they'll be finished with Froyo updates before Xmas. Well, August is before Xmas, as is September, October, November and most of December!
What we do know is that HTC have gone on record to say that they are expecting the first updates to roll out in Q3, but we don't know which devices will get it first.

Dave

Lets hope it's true and the Desire gets 2.2 in August before the other phones, but i must admit that 2.1 is great and i have no issues with it so am happy to wait whenever it comes out.
It takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. That’s not like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features. To make sure that they’re all running properly on the OS now that it’s a new version. And then to make sure that it’s running on our hardware as well as we expect. I would believe that we would be done with our Froyo updates before Christmas.

It seems alot of the replies in this thread don't take into account the fact that a HTC 2.2 test rom with sense has already been leaked to certain people and was mostly working. So HTC are pretty far along in development already.
Yes i know about that rom. Thats why i think its strange that HTC PR guy talks about crhistmas?

I think this is cos they want to prevent what happened with the 2.1 Update for the HTC Hero (more than a half year between announcement and shipment, at least in europe).
Better to make promises they can hold. So the Christmas announcement makes completly sense to me.

Yes thats probably the reason. But it might make people not buying the Desire also and go for another brand like Samsung Galaxy S or even the Iphone 4 =P
Oh well, Im glad we have the Devs who get froyo roms out =)
Roms that dont work
Not trying to offend anyone.. I m pretty new to the HTC Desire (3 days) but VERY happy I forgot I ever had a 3GS.
But as far as roms are concerned, I see it is not worth using them since simple stuff such as video recording do not work.
Man, hope this better be true.
Sorry to sound so retardly geeky but it's been such a deep sadness for not being able to use the sdcard for applications. I'm sure you dudes feel the same!

The only thing they have said is that they will be done BEFORE Christmas, that could be any time not precisely Christmas, it just gives them a window to allow for things to go wrong.
Another hint the update is not far of (statement from Eric Lin, global PR and online community Manager of HTC):
"I don't think you're going to see that really long six month, seven month lag, like you saw in the updates from 1.5 to 2.1, simply because it's a less severe change. Switching from 2.1 to 2.2, they made a lot of tweaks, but they didn't make any gigantic changes, so it should be a much swifter process".

if it wasn't for the bogus 512mb "ROM limit" on installing apps, i wouldnt be awaiting froyo with such baited breath.

And anyway, they might have really started to roll-out, as HTC Germany says.

What limited would that be, and because as far as i'm aware the limit is hardware - the Dell Streak running 1.6 has 2gb available for apps storage.

I really think some people need to step away from the internet and go out and have some fun. If it's here when you get back then you can install; if it's not then not.
Surely an update to your mobile phone can not be the most important thing in your lives...
Not in the least bothered really when it comes, today, tomorrow, next week.
I already have Froyo and its running sweet.
How many stupid Desire users does it take to screw in a lightbulb ?
The be honest I am more irritated by dumb-fu-ks who have more time than brain cells and have to whinge about everything including the firmware release of a completely functional mobile phone. Even worse is the fact that two mouse clicks away is another section of the forum where they could easily download and run about a dozen versions of Android 2.2 hacked/packed/delivered with all the bells and whistles.
So people put the fu-king phone down, chill out, go outside and take a breath of fresh air. You will live longer ....
THE UPDATE WILL COME WHEN IT COMES..... Jumping up and down about it, checking the OTA update on the phone every 2 microseconds and making another 1.4 billion new threads won't make it appear any faster...
Next instalment in the new pointless thread forum - "I fu-ked up my phone when updating the OTA ! Help !!!", "Why won't the HTC OTA work on my Orange/Virgin/crap branded Desire" and my favourite "What's an OTA", oh and another "Anyone got Froyo Update?" (speak of the devil http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741397 )

you do have a point here. but: why do you get so angry?
you accuse them of having nothing else to do than wait for the froyo release. yet, you fail to convey this in an appropriate manner: In order to make them realize that they are poor souls (whose sole purpose in life is a phone software update), you better tell them in a way they don't perceive as *****ing and hating.
however, the way you get all angry about them raises the suspicion that you yourself have little else to do in your free time. complaining about them doesn't help anyone!

I'm pretty sure O2 has released the 2.2 update for the Desire.
T Mobile have managed to screw up the android os so many times that I think they are staffed by chimps.
There are so many good roms out you should unlock your phone and use the quality releases that can be found on this board.
Orange are worse .. I think we should have a Phone provider top 10 ... of muppets...
Orange keep saying coming soon... see my thread ... I have Hboot 0.75 so may root etc soon ...but then why should I ??

To be fair to TMo, they did very, very little to brand the Desire ROM - essentially a boot screen and a few changed icons.
It makes it all the more surprising that they are so slow to roll out the Froyo update when so little has been changed.

Dave

Well, someone at HTC possibly, although maybe not - going by the number of threads where people have been told Yes/No/Maybe by different folks from said company...
It'll be here when it arrives, and not a moment sooner.
It would be prudent if the next topic about would be themed something like 'yay, I got an ota update'.
I think that maybe there will not be any date announced before the update. That we will just get it.
What do you guys think about that?

*cough* thorough *cough* research has shown that updates always arrive when you're offline, so I guess it doesn't help much to keep pressing the F5 or update button
I think they're using the same algorithm as the mail man, for delivering that one important package when you're not at home.
Don't see what you mean really... Do you mean that everyone won't get the update at the same time??? :S
Depends on your carrier's arrangements with HTC. It will be staggered so that the servers are not overloaded.
I'd assume that Europe will get the update first.
From what I gathered when I emailed htc awhile back they said they had some sort of slot system - not sure how much of that is true though...
Sounded like they had x amount of 'slots' per day and it sounded like first come first served style.
When they were full/used up you just waited till the next day.
for unbranded... carriers probably have their own way of doing things to the branded sets?
HTC themselves said last week that the new 2.3.3 update should be released for unbranded desire's sometime at the end of next week so it should be today or maybe over the weekend.

The amount of misinformation these days is staggering.
Actually there is a simple explanation why is that. It derives from the phenomenon called 'selective reading'. When they see a new thread, they only actually read two words, 'update' and 'Gingerbread'. The rest of the post they simply forge together by abstract thinking.
"HTC Desire getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread next week, some HTC Sense features face the chop"

So Vodafone and 3 have released a branded 1.28 update...T-mobile refuse to even acknowledge it exists (even though 1.29 is out now for unbranded). I have asked everywhere and met a total wall of silence regarding updates from t-mobile.
So my plan now is to ask every branded t-mobile uk customer to tweet t-mobile's support asking for ANY information regarding updates to our bug ridden HOX. The standard reply is 'we don't get told until it is released'. That is not good enough we wont need to ask when it is released, I don't believe in this day and age someone internally can't at least let us know if anything is in test...
